Steve Borthwick is confident he has the backing of the Rugby Football Union after England were plunged into crisis by collapsing to a historic defeat to Italy.England surrendered a 18-10 lead in the third quarter to fall 23-18 at the Stadio Olimpico, registering a third consecutive loss in a Guinness Six Nations that concludes against title-chasing France in Paris on Saturday. It was the first time in 33 encounters they had been beaten by Italy and they are facing the prospect of finishing the tournament with just one win – an all-time low.

00:00Steve, more specifically on your own role, why do you think you're the man to take England forward?
00:06I've been very clear with the RFU, myself, so Conor O'Shea, Bill Sweeney, we speak regularly and discuss about the
00:16vision of the team going forward.
00:17Now, we know the team accelerated in development over the last 12 months and also understanding that right now in
00:25the Six Nations there's going to be some tough challenges ahead.
00:28And clearly we've not got the results in those challenges that we wanted to be, but they've been very clear
00:36in our communication about the vision, the long-term vision of the team.
00:39So why are you the right man to take the team on?
00:41I think you can see the team's growth over the last period of time, certainly the last 12 months prior
00:49to this, has been very, very strong.
00:51And I think you can see the vision of where the team is going to be and you see the
00:55nature of the players coming through.
00:57Right now, again, this is a tough period.
01:01What we'll do is, as with every one of these experiences, is learn from it and make sure that we
01:07are a stronger team going forward.
