00:45It is good to be back.
00:47Beautiful blue skies above Melbourne today as we return for the first round of this 2026 Formula One season here
00:54in Australia.
00:55The fans have packed the place out.
00:57It is a sell-out this weekend.
00:59There was plenty for them to see earlier, and the Ferrari fans were particularly happy.
01:04It was a one-two for Ferrari in that first practice session.
01:07Charles Leclerc topping the times today as he did at the end of testing.
01:11Lots to be hopeful for for Ferrari, but I'm joined right now by Jenson Button in the paddock here in
01:17the glorious sunshine, Jenson.
01:18And more than Ferrari topping, which is great for Ferrari fans, that was really close.
01:23The times are close.
01:24It was, yeah.
01:25Both Ferrari drivers up there as well, which is nice to see.
01:28Red Bull and Mercedes.
01:31I feel that McLaren's a little bit on the back foot, but that might be because they had limited running.
01:35They had a few issues at the beginning of the run.
01:37But Oscar put it up there.
01:38But, yeah, it's really exciting.
01:40And they're a lot closer, I think, than we ever thought they would be in FP1.
01:44This second session, what do you think they're going to be doing?
01:46What's the plan?
01:47I mean, they've obviously got to try and get some long runs in and understand that a little bit more
01:50with these 2026 cars.
01:51Yeah, because of the deployment of the power unit and the combustion engine, but also from the hybrid system, they
02:00would have gained so much information from FP1.
02:02It's the first time I've driven on the circuit.
02:03You know, they do all the simulations beforehand, but there's nothing like real life.
02:07So I think we're going to see a big change in terms of performance from FP1 to FP2.
02:12The lap times are going to get a lot faster, more than what we would normally see.
02:16So it'll be interesting to see.
02:17I have to say, I love watching these cars out on track.
02:20They look so good.
02:21They do.
02:21They're more nimble.
02:23They're able to do more with them.
02:24They're able to hang the back out, whereas last year they couldn't do that.
02:28We're making the drivers work harder, which is never a bad thing.
02:30We're also making Bernie and Ant work harder, too, because we've sent them over to the Skypad to take a
02:35closer look at that first session of 2026.
02:38Yeah, well, first of all, Bernie, we're going to, Ginson mentioned it.
02:41Let's talk about reliability.
02:43Why is it so tough for these drivers?
02:45I'll play it on.
02:46You talk over what the implications are for reliability now.
02:49Yeah, no, we've seen here the racing bulls stopping at the end of the Villean, trying to get it going
02:54there again.
02:54It sounds, from a mechanical point of view, it sounds very harsh, doesn't it?
02:58You see the McLaren coming in as well.
03:00It's had a significant amount of time in that session in the garage.
03:04Any downtime at this track is not learning for the entire car, the PUs, and because we've had such a
03:11big regulation change, everything in these cars is different.
03:14They need to be learning about the tyres around this track.
03:16We had a hydraulic failure on the Williams as well, so lots of different failures and different niggles showing up.
03:22Just listen to the Aston Martin.
03:28I mean, it doesn't sound like they're revving the engine much at all, and Alonso didn't even get into the
03:33car, so there's reliability problems, and there's a whole different world of pain for Aston Martin.
03:38Yeah, exactly, and they've spent, you know, three days here now trying to build these cars together, and then to
03:43not even get out in FP1 is a new level of reliability that we didn't think we would get to.
03:48So they're obviously trying their best to get these cars lapsed, but very, very limited in P1.
03:52So this is an interesting one.
03:53These cars are really hard to drive, and we're seeing that, but also drivers prepping a lap.
03:58So this is riding on board with Hajar.
04:00This is an interesting one.
04:01Creeping around the final corner, preparing his lap, not wanting to use his battery too early, gets overtaken by the
04:06Alpine.
04:07Now you hear the revs pick up, and he gets into the slipstream as well.
04:10He's now arriving into the corner faster than he's ever been before because of all that deployment, and you're off
04:15straight away.
04:16And that's very different to what we've seen in the past.
04:18In the past, when drivers are prepping or starting a lap, they go as fast as they can from the
04:23exit of the final corner, and we wouldn't have had that situation.
04:26He would have been well ahead of the other car.
04:28So that is different this year.
04:29It wasn't alone.
04:30I mean, Verstappen over the bumps into turn three, that's another one to look out for, and a huge lock
04:35-up for him as well.
04:36So one thing that doesn't change, though, Bernie, with this circuit is turn 10.
04:40No matter rule change or not, turn 10 exit, like it proved with Hamilton, is going to bite you if
04:46you take too much of it.
04:47It doesn't look excessive from the on-board, but the off-board looks like it could potentially damage the underfloor
04:52of the car.
04:52Yeah, and you can see there he's nowhere near track limits.
04:55The car's running the middle of the blue line there, but the damage to the bottom of the floor, and
05:00especially this early in the season,
05:03all of these teams have struggled to get parts here.
05:05So you can't afford to damage too many in an FP1 session.
05:08Looking forward to what's to come in FP2.
05:11Back to you.
05:11Thanks very much, Anthony.
05:13Yes, looking forward to it.
05:14We have to mention there, though, they talked about the Aston Martin yesterday.
05:17They had a press conference where we were learning a bit more about their problems,
05:20but a short while ago, Adrian Uri has revealed even more about the extent of what they're dealing with right
05:26now.
05:27We came here with four batteries.
05:29We've had conditioning problems or communication problems with two of those batteries,
05:35which means we've, as we sit here today, only got two operational batteries.
05:42That, given our kind of rate of battery damage, is quite a scary place to be in.
05:48So, obviously, we're hopeful that we can get through the weekend and start two cars and so on and so
05:56forth.
05:56But it's very difficult to be concrete at the moment about that.
06:01Adrian, is there the possibility of flying more batteries in?
06:06Unfortunately not.
06:06There aren't any.
06:10Jensen, I don't know how you get to this point, but also, if you say there's no way of flying
06:14any more in for this weekend,
06:16that surely impacts China as well.
06:17We're only a week away from China.
06:18It's a back-to-back.
06:20A lot can get done in a week in Formula One, as we know.
06:22But, yeah, it's not an easy position for Aston Martin.
06:27You know, coming into this season, I think there was always, for every team, there's a lot of excitement.
06:31Regulation changes, trying to do the best they can with those changes.
06:34And Adrian Newey, wow.
06:36You know, he's designing the car.
06:38It's a massive deal.
06:39And it works team, works Honda team.
06:41But it hasn't gone, you know, hasn't gone the way that they expected it to initially.
06:47And I think when you arrive here and you only get three laps in first practice, again, you're not learning
06:53anything.
06:53You know, you can't get any more reliability work done if you're doing three laps.
06:57So, it's a tough situation for them to be in.
07:00But I think everyone's got to be a little bit patient with these new regulations.
07:04And they're working very, very hard to improve.
07:06So, I look, hopefully, look forward to them being out on track in FP2.
07:11Yes, and turning this around.
07:12I mean, there was so much excitement when Adrian Newey signed.
07:15They were going to have this Honda engine.
07:16Everyone was looking forward to it.
07:17How do you, as a driver, maintain your motivation when, you know, Fernando's sitting there on his phone during the
07:22session.
07:23And there's so much, as you say, work going on.
07:25But how do you keep motivated when that's what you're up against?
07:27At the moment, it's not so bad as a driver.
07:30It's the first race of the year.
07:31If you get halfway through the season and you find yourself in a tricky situation and it's not improving, yeah,
07:36that's tough mentally.
07:37But at the start of a season, when so much is new within this team, you know, they've spoken about
07:43Honda.
07:44And Adrian Newey said that it's only 30% of the staff that actually built the previous engine.
07:48So there's a lot of new in this team and it does take time to sort of gel together and
07:54work together and to be strong.
07:57And when you're fighting against the likes of Mercedes and Red Bull and McLaren, you've got to be on your
08:01game and you've got to be ready for it.
08:03And it takes time to get to that.
08:07What progress do you want to see if you're the driver going into, say, next week?
08:10Do you want just more laps on the board?
08:12What will you take as a sign that you're going in the right direction and that you can stick with
08:16it, essentially?
08:18Time, you know, driving.
08:19And as you said, you know, every lap they do, every kilometre they do is not just learning for the
08:24driver, but for everyone within the team,
08:26whether it's the aerodynamics, the mechanical side of the car, the power unit, Honda.
08:32Every single kilometre matters and they've not done enough of them.
08:35Well, let's look ahead then to this second practice session because we will see everybody else back out on track.
08:40We hopefully see them back out on track as well.
08:42But this battle, we thought Mercedes were going to walk away with it.
08:45A little bit less pace than Ferrari in that, but everyone's still learning these engines and these cars and this
08:49energy management.
08:50It's great because when you're watching them on track, it looks very Formula One.
08:55Do you know what I mean?
08:55You don't see the differences with the power output through the lap.
08:59So I'm loving watching these cars and the competitiveness of the field out there.
09:03Brilliant stuff.
09:04Well, as we see the drivers getting ready to get back out there for this second practice session,
09:09you'll be able to see exactly how they get on on the way next.
09:23Plenty still to come from here in Melbourne.
09:26Second practice is on the way for you next.
09:27We will round up the first day of the 2026 season in the F1 show from 6.15 in the
09:33morning.
09:33Your Saturday looks like this with final practice getting underway at 10 past one,
09:37qualifying from 10 past four for the Australian Grand Prix.
09:40And on Sunday, your race day looks like this.
09:43We will be on air from 2.30.
09:45It's lights out for the first race of the season at four.
09:48In commentary now to take you through this session, it's David Croft and Anthony Davidson.

29:55but I'm not quite sure.
29:57Ого, от the top I've been up to.
29:58So, this is Turn 5.
30:00Ooh!
30:01That's usually flat out.
30:03That's usually flat out, that corner.
30:04Wow.
30:04It's not been yet.
30:07And that's what's scary about this track, you know, you have a moment like that, and
30:12you've got a wall right there on the left hand side just...
30:15And you're going quick through Turn 5.
30:17So you're saying that they're not flat out there yet?
30:19Not yet.
30:20And maybe down at 7 kg fuel.
30:24We're going to be flat at 6 kg fuel.
30:25Hang on, Fernando's looking side-to-side here.
30:31Is he just getting out of the way?
30:32I hope so.
30:34But that doesn't sound good, does it?
30:37Oh, dear.
30:39Oh, that's really slow, isn't it?
30:44So he had a problem with the power unit when it fired up this morning
30:47that was different to the problems that they've been experiencing before then.
30:52That just sounds horrible, doesn't it?
30:56I can't hear, so I'm...
30:58You can't hear it?
30:59Oh, here you go, sorry.
31:01No, I didn't have the button.
31:02Nerds.
31:03He didn't have the...
31:03Sorry, Jack.
31:04I'm like, I'm like, I'm like looking at you,
31:07thinking that maybe you're just making something up.
31:09I'm like, yeah, this sounds not so great.
31:12I didn't really know where to go for a second.
31:14We never make up a thing, right?
31:17Everything you hear...
31:17I didn't know maybe that sound wasn't working.
31:20And as an incredible, you know, spokesperson,
31:24gentleman that you are, just going with the flow, being proactive.
31:28Yeah, but he's not a sidekick.
31:31I'll tell you who is sidekick.
31:33Ted Kravitz.
31:33Let's head down to him now.
31:35No, unfortunately not.
31:36Wish I was.
31:37Be very useful for this job.
31:38I just say what I can see as well.
31:39And we're expecting to see Max Verstappen quite quickly out
31:43after conking out at the end of the pit lane.
31:45But based on what happened with Arvid Lindblad early on
31:48with the same power unit, remember?
31:49Remember, Crofty, it took 10 or 15 minutes for that power unit
31:53either to cool down or for something to happen.
31:55And it looked like nobody was touching the car
31:57until about 30 seconds ago.
31:58And now the nose cone has come off
32:00and they're playing with something at the front
32:02of the bulkhead of the car.
32:04I can't see whether it's the oil or the brake reservoir
32:09or whether they're actually going to start doing a suspension change
32:13while he's in the garage.
32:14And it looks like actually they've got the accumulator.
32:18Can you see the box at the front here?
32:20So it looks like there is a further problem
32:23whether that's brake fluid, hydraulic fluid or whatever.
32:26It's going into that servo system at the front of the bulkhead
32:30where all the little reservoirs are.
32:32So there's obviously something, it's a loss of pressure
32:34maybe in the system they need to repressurize the system.
32:36But as we'll learn more about these cars
32:38and these power units, how complicated they are,
32:40if you have a little conk out at the end of the pit lane
32:43like Lindblad did early on
32:44and like Verstappen has just now,
32:46maybe that has consequences further down
32:49in these systems.
32:51So yeah, another further problem
32:52that's keeping Verstappen in the garage.
32:55That happened in testing
32:56where I think Isaac Hadjar had an issue.
32:58That led to another issue and another one.
33:00He spent most of the day in the garage.
33:03No issues on track for George Russell.
33:05Look at him throw that Mercedes into turn 10.
33:08Picks up a little slipstream behind Isaac Hadjar
33:11and on his way down towards turn 11,
33:13next braking zone.
33:14As soon as you lift off,
33:16the active aero shaft gives you the downforce
33:18that you need to take the corner.
33:20Yeah, no more of those active aero zones
33:22through the remainder of the lap.
33:24So through turn 12, he goes into 13,
33:27get to the middle of the track,
33:28try and open up the final corner.
33:30And then we saw him lose a bit of time here
33:31last time around.
33:32A very influential corner for lap time,
33:36that one.
33:36Looks like he gets it more than right that time around.
33:39So he heads Piastri and his teammate here,
33:42Kimi Antonelli, that we're on board with now.
33:44And he's on the soft tyre, George Russell.
33:46Track's rubbering in.
33:47We're already going faster than we were earlier today.
33:50120.2 for Charles Leclerc.
33:52It's a 120.0 for George Russell.
33:55Kimi Antonelli, meanwhile,
33:57through the first sector we go
33:58and a 28.0 matches what George Russell did
34:00on his previous lap.
34:01Yeah, there's that cracking corner
34:03that we were talking about before turn six.
34:05Just that brief lift off the throttle
34:07and then you have to get back on it early
34:10because all this is flat out,
34:12flat out all the way up towards turn nine.
34:14Listen to that.
34:14You've got the super clip kicking in.
34:16So that really affects your speed
34:18into this next left-right sequence.
34:20So his foot's still flat to the floor.
34:23Yeah, still flat.
34:24But the car takes over and you start to lose.
34:27Think of it like an electric handbrake
34:28just coming on as you're flat out.
34:30Right.
34:31And that is just sending energy into the battery
34:34while you're flat out.
34:35So it's like an old-fashioned dynamo on your bicycle.
34:38Imagine you're cruising along at a good cruising speed
34:41and then suddenly someone whacks the dynamo on
34:43and you're still pedaling,
34:45but you start going slower and slower
34:47with that resistance there in place.
34:49So that's what's going on there.
34:50Kimi crosses the line
34:51just under two-tenths away from his team-mate.
34:54Yeah, Russell Antonelli-Piastri now the top three.
34:57We're on board with Lewis Hamilton.
34:59Ferrari power like it is at Haas.
35:01Give us the gossip now, Jack,
35:04from inside the Haas team.
35:06Testing seemed to go really well.
35:09Io Comatsu was very happy with the way things are.
35:11Where do Haas feel they might be in the pecking order?
35:14And how are things behind the seats?
35:16No comment.
35:17Oh, don't come up, dude.
35:19Give me no comment, dude.
35:20I'm kidding.
35:20I'm kidding.
35:21No.
35:22To be honest,
35:24I would honestly be lying
35:27to give you an exact result
35:30and an exact position of where I think we are.
35:32I think it's a similar position
35:34to where Haas were last year.
35:36I think with the package in the right window
35:40can be fighting for points
35:42on the side of the top half of the top ten,
35:43but also with it slightly in the other direction
35:46can be very easily the other side of that
35:49with, I think, just coming back
35:51into that very tight mid-pack
35:53that we're going to see again.
35:56But then again,
35:57you have the Mercedes 1 and 2
35:59on a soft compound tyre
36:00only three to five times quicker
36:02than the Ferrari on the hards
36:04and that's not what we saw
36:05from then in testing, is it?
36:06So we could be back to the old days
36:09of the Mercedes
36:10looking after themselves
36:11a little bit in practice
36:12before we head into qualifying.
36:13Maybe you know a little bit more.
36:17We were talking about this earlier on.
36:19Ignoring you now as well.
36:21I'm answering the question.
36:22Indirectly no commenting.
36:23Look at this moment
36:24for Anthony van de XF1010.
36:26We spoke about this before as well.
36:29The car sparking away.
36:31But no, I mean,
36:32we were saying
36:32the days of sandbagging
36:34might be more of a thing of the past
36:36because if you do that,
36:39you're actually not going to end up
36:40with the right data
36:41in terms of your energy deployment.
36:43when it comes to that
36:44critical qualifying session,
36:46you have to learn
36:47where to deploy
36:48and where to harvest the energy
36:50based on what the car's potential
36:52can be.
36:54So the more grip
36:55that you put into it,
36:56therefore the less fuel
36:58you put into it,
36:58so hence some qualifying effort,
37:01the more grip you have,
37:02the more problems you create
37:03on a circuit like this.
37:05Because if you look at the ultimate,
37:06if you take it to the absolute of that,
37:10if you gave Stroll
37:11the most grip possible
37:13to make sure
37:14that he could take
37:15the entire lap flat out,
37:16imagine he had so much grip,
37:18way more grip than power,
37:20and he could take,
37:21therefore,
37:21the whole circuit flat out.
37:22Where are you getting
37:23your energy recovery from?
37:25No.
37:26So you have to lift off
37:28and brake at some point,
37:29so the faster you go,
37:31the bigger the difference is
37:33and the bigger the problem is
37:34in terms of recouping your energy.
37:36Right.
37:37So you've got to keep it real.
37:39if you poot around
37:40in testing,
37:41sandbagging like the old days,
37:43when it comes to qualifying,
37:44you're going to have
37:44a completely different car
37:47under you
37:47and therefore different
37:48power deployment
37:50for what it's been set up
37:51and learned to do.
37:52Interesting.
37:53I think that's a great,
37:54great point.
37:54It's a touch on that.
37:56When we're speaking
37:56about two and five,
37:57just before it ended up being flat,
37:59and that comes down
38:00to maybe simulations
38:01that were ran on,
38:02let's say,
38:0210, 15 kg fuel
38:04and the simulator
38:05is easy flat, right?
38:06We come here to the track
38:07or maybe running
38:08the typical 30 kg,
38:10you know,
38:10free practice fuel load
38:11and all of a sudden
38:12turn five's not flat,
38:13so we're lifting,
38:13so now energy deployment
38:14for the remainder of that
38:15is just completely up in the air.
38:17Out comes George Russell
38:19onto the track,
38:2025 minutes,
38:21sorry,
38:2124 minutes gone
38:22and George Russell
38:24was the fastest driver
38:25on the circuit.
38:26That is where he has
38:27his dominance
38:27over his teammates.
38:29through the slower corners,
38:30Kimi Antonelli
38:31seems to be doing
38:33a little bit better,
38:33but it's George
38:34by a tenth of a lap,
38:35nearly two tenths,
38:36and has the fastest time.
38:47Welcome back.
38:4832 and a half minutes to go.
38:49We're just talking,
38:50oh, George Russell's
38:51been off somewhere.
38:54Safely rejoins the circuit.
38:56You can see that it was down
38:58on turn four
38:59where we saw
39:00Sergio Perez
39:01have a moment
39:02in FP Roth.
39:03I think he might have gone
39:04through the gravel
39:05at the exit turn three
39:06and that was him
39:07coming back on
39:08into the inside of turn four.
39:10So we saw
39:10Verstappen go off there.
39:12Well, he locked up down there,
39:13didn't he?
39:14But tires get colder
39:16in this current era
39:17of Formula One.
39:20But they're notoriously
39:22difficult to slow down
39:23as well.
39:24We see a lot of inconsistencies
39:25so far with these
39:26new power units,
39:28new regulations,
39:28and yeah.
39:30Turn three
39:30is also just,
39:32you know,
39:33you're not straight line
39:33braking.
39:34It's bumpy,
39:34as you can see,
39:35that car right there.
39:36Great shot in the slow-mo
39:38as well.
39:38You really get to see
39:39exactly the movement
39:40at the front axle
39:41as it's going over
39:42those bumps
39:42and yeah,
39:43once it locks,
39:44it's so hard
39:45to unlock them.
39:46Maybe he didn't stop
39:47the car,
39:48you know,
39:48going over the bumps,
39:49couldn't put the brake
39:50pressure on.
39:51Post bumps,
39:51put a bit,
39:52you know,
39:52was holding a bit
39:52pressure while turning
39:53and we see a lock-up.
39:55And George now behind
39:56by a tenth of a second
39:57to his teammate.
