01:24These jets are pointed in opposite directions,
01:27launched from outside the event horizon
01:29along magnetic field lines.
01:32Using four observations obtained by Chandra
01:36in 2018 and 2019,
01:39astronomers were able to capture footage
01:41of this black hole's behavior.
01:44Just how fast are the jets of material
01:46moving away from the black hole?
01:48From Earth's perspective,
01:50it looks as if the northern jet is moving
01:53at 60% the speed of light,
01:55while the southern one is traveling
01:57at an impossible sounding 160% of light speed.
02:01This is an example of superluminal motion,
02:04a phenomenon that occurs
02:05when something travels toward us
02:08near the speed of light,
02:09along a direction close to our line of sight.
02:13This means the object travels almost as quickly toward us
02:16as the light it generates,
02:18giving the illusion that the jet's motion
02:20is more rapid than the speed of light.
02:23In the case of Maxi J1820 plus 070,
02:27the southern jet is pointing toward us
02:30and the northern jet is pointing away from us.
02:32So the southern jet appears to be moving faster
02:35than the northern one.
02:37The actual velocity of the particles in both jets
02:40is greater than 80% of the speed of light,
02:43which is, amazingly, about 500 million miles per hour.
02:52is right,
