00:00Gateshead Council has proposed the idea of converting the former Deckham Family Centre
00:05into a five-bedroom flat. The 659-square-metre ground floor, vacant since 2018, would become
00:13affordable housing if the plans are approved. Plans include new energy-saving windows, a
00:20roof with a tapped chimney and solar panels. The first floor already contains two flats.
00:26One public objection has been lodged. A similar facility, the Deckham Family Hub
00:31at the Elgin Centre, operates half a mile away offering community activities. A
00:36previous proposal to convert the building in October 2025 was withdrawn in
00:42November of the same year.
