00:28These are waters not far from India's coastline in the Indian Ocean.
00:35Everyone knows there's U.S. subs there, but to take this kind of action really comes as a shock to

00:41Not only concerns that the wider war might spread,
00:45but this ship was in India doing a port visit at a fleet review before this.
00:53So India was essentially hosting the Iranians and a bunch of other countries,
00:57including Russia and the U.S. at the time.
00:59And this ship was sailing back from that event.
01:03So there is domestic fallout now.
01:05There's a lot of shock in India at this event,
01:10because essentially you've been hosting these guests.
01:13You've been telling them to come over.
01:14Then on the way home, they got shot and a lot of people died.
01:22So what are the implications here for the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in terms of the tightrope that he
01:28needs to walk?
01:29And have we heard from Sri Lanka?

01:35We have not heard from Modi yet.
01:37And I think that's one of the big things we're waiting for is how does he respond?
01:42He's had to carefully walk the tightrope, as you said, with the Trump administration,
01:46not just with the Iran war, but also with Russia, with India's relationship with Russia.
01:55Trump heightened tariffs on India for buying Russian oil last year.
01:59Those just came down earlier this year.
02:02They signed a trade deal.
02:04Modi was also in Israel right before the war began.
02:08So he's already come under domestic criticism for that, for getting too close to Israel in this.
02:15And now you have this incident where India was hosting the Iranians,
02:18and the warship was sunk not far from India on its way back.
02:25So there's a lot of domestic anger in India,
02:27and how Modi responds to that will be very interesting.
02:32We expect today that parties will come out and be critical of him
02:37and ask him to take a firmer stand, kind of condemning this action.
02:41Whether he's going to do that or not, probably not.
02:44But it'll be interesting to see what he does today.
