A US strike on an Iranian warship in the Indian Ocean and further Israeli incursions into southern Lebanon are spreading the scope of the war in the Middle East. And the failure of a war powers vote in the US Senate means there's still no end in sight as day six dawns.

00:01A school workbook, a child's backpack.
00:04These are among the objects on display at a memorial for the girls
00:07killed in a U.S.-Israeli strike on a primary school in Iran on Saturday.
00:12The country says over 160 people died in the attack.
00:15Israel says it's investigating.
00:18Here at Tehran University, people are gathering to mourn.
00:23Those who truly want to know what's happening in Iran
00:25can come and see where they have struck,
00:27see where they hit residential areas, schools or hospitals.
00:32Of course they have hit military targets.
00:34That's the basis of the war they started.
00:36But they didn't only hit military targets.
00:39But the war in the Middle East, now in Day 6, isn't just grinding on.
00:44It's spreading.
00:45The Pentagon says this footage shows the moment a U.S. submarine
00:48sank an Iranian warship off southern Sri Lanka.
00:53The recovered bodies of the Iranian sailors aboard
00:56are now here at a mortuary in Gali, Sri Lanka,
00:59more than 4,000 kilometers from Tehran.
01:02Sri Lanka says the ship was heading back to Iran from eastern India
01:05at the time of the U.S. strike.
01:07It says at least 80 people died.
01:10U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth says this was the first enemy ship
01:14the U.S. has sunk by torpedo since World War II.
01:17They are toast and they know it.
01:19Or at least, soon enough, they will know it.
01:24The war is also spilling further into Israel's northern neighbor, Lebanon,
01:29home to Iranian proxy Hezbollah.
01:31Israeli strikes in places including here in the capital, Beirut,
01:35left widespread destruction Wednesday.
01:39Israel released this footage of what it says are its troops deployed in Lebanon's south.
01:44Israel has occupied five locations here since 2024,
01:47but now more troops are coming in and taking towns.
01:50It's warning civilians to evacuate around 8% of Lebanese territory.
01:57Even by Tuesday, the UN had estimated there were 30,000 displaced people in Lebanon.
02:02They've come to places like this school in Beirut,
02:05some after days looking for a safe place to stay.
02:10But of course, we say thank God we're not on the street,
02:13even though we're still missing necessities and things like mattresses and stuff like that.
02:18Right now, we don't sleep properly.
02:20We sit on chairs all night, or for example, our kids are on the floor.
02:23I brought a few blankets so they can sleep on the floor, and that's basically it.
02:29And in the U.S., involvement in this war has been politically
02:32fraught from the start.
02:34But on Wednesday, a Senate resolution to require congressional approval
02:38for any more attacks on Iran failed to pass.
02:41The legislation will go to a vote in the House of Representatives on Thursday.
02:45But House Speaker Mike Johnson says halting U.S. military action would empower U.S. enemies.
02:51And he says this isn't really a war.
02:54I don't believe in the semantics. We've talked about the language this morning.
02:57We're not at war right now. We're four days in to a very specific, clear mission and operation, Operation Epic
03:07Fury.
03:07U.S. President Donald Trump, though, doesn't seem to agree.
03:11We're doing very well on the war front, to put it mildly, I would say.
03:16Somebody said on a scale of 10, where would you rate it? I said about a 15.
03:20Whatever it's called, this conflict may have been coming no matter what,
03:24with Israel's defense minister now saying his country had been planning to strike Iran later in the year anyway.
03:30But now that it's begun, there's no end in sight.
03:33Even amid reports Iranian ballistic missile launches have dropped sharply.
03:37Over 1,000 civilians are dead in Iran, around 50 in Lebanon, 10 in Israel, and several more in countries
03:44around the region.
03:45And as this overnight blast in Beirut shows, the dawning of Day 6 promises more destruction.
