00:00Boy, he's an all-time great.
00:01San Jose Sharks fans know him very, very well.
00:05Patrick Marleau joins us now on the crossover.
00:08So, Patty, first of all, here on the River Islands Guest Line,
00:11thank you very much for your time.
00:12This is a huge thrill for all of us.
00:14There are four of us in the room.
00:16Patty!
00:17Yeah, Mark Willard, Dan Dibley, Stiney, and Guru are all here.
00:21And we're all going to the Sharks game together in a sweet tomorrow night,
00:26and we cannot wait to see this young team.
00:29How are you doing, man?
00:30I'm doing great.
00:31Yeah, you guys are going to be in for a treat tomorrow for the game.
00:35So, it's going to be a great game.
00:37Yeah, like how would you go about describing,
00:40and I know the world is getting to know Macklin Celebrini,
00:44but it's not just him.
00:45The wealth of young talent that this team has right now,
00:49how would you put this into words, what you're watching?
00:52You know, what management's been doing there, Mike Greer, Tom Holy,
00:56and the coaching staff has just been helping these young guys, you know,
01:00kind of come along and earn their stripes and play really hard.
01:05So, you know, and then when you have a guy like Macklin at such a young age,
01:10you know, kind of driving the bus,
01:11showing the leading the way with, you know, his work ethic alone,
01:15but the skill and the compete that he has at such a young age is truly remarkable.
01:20Patty, I heard something today that I wasn't aware of,
01:24but I find it fascinating, and that is that your rookie players spend their rookie year,
01:30some of them, their star rookie players,
01:32spend their first year living with a sharp great.
01:36And, you know, Macklin Celebrini apparently lived with Joe Thornton last year,
01:40and Will Smith lived with you last year.
01:44First of all, is that true?
01:46And what a great idea, and who came up with it, and what are the benefits?
01:51Yeah, no, it is a great idea.
01:54Like, my first year here with the Sharks, I was taken in by a player as well,
01:58Kelly Rudy and his family, Donna and their daughters.
02:02So that was a great experience for me.
02:04It helped me, you know, get acclimated to the group, being away from home,
02:09you know, playing against grown men.
02:12So that was, you know, something I always cherished throughout my career.
02:17And then, you know, my career came to myself and Jumbo at the, you know,
02:21a couple of years ago and asked if we'd be willing to do the same thing.
02:24And I said 100%, wife was on board.
02:27So I have a couple of boys, too, that are getting around the same age,
02:32and they're leaving home playing hockey as well.
02:35So I think the wife liked having a few extra mouths to feed around the house.
02:40But, yeah, no, Will's became part of the family, and, you know,
02:46Macklin's over here as well.
02:48You know, they'll go over to Jumbo's as well.
02:50So they're bouncing from place to place.
02:52But it's been great having a round, being able to watch them
02:56and see them, you know, both do so well in their first couple of years playing.
03:00Patty, I guess you answered this a little bit,
03:02but I was curious if you have a choice in the matter here,
03:05because it kind of makes it sound like this is just what the organization does.
03:09And I'm thinking, what if you don't want some 18-year-old smelly dude
03:13moving into your house?
03:14Yeah, I think that just goes to show what type of people are involved in hockey
03:19and want to just help out.
03:21I think that's the main thing.
03:23I know Jumbo likes giving back, and I know I like having young guys around.
03:27It's like, you know, it keeps you youthful, and, you know,
03:31to see them go through, you know, some of the things that I remember going through
03:36at a young age and, you know, try and help them through those, you know,
03:40through those little obstacles or how to maneuver them
03:42and, you know, get to hear their takes on, you know, playing in the league,
03:46what's it like, who do they admire, you know, all those different things.
03:51You get to learn about them and over some nice dinners,
03:54and, you know, we get to know them as a person and, you know,
03:57just kind of get to watch how he is as a player and as a person.
04:02Hey, Pat, I need your help.
04:03My dad has this old saying, son, act like you've been there.
04:06I'm going to be at the tank in the suite tomorrow with some serious hockey fans.
04:10Any slogan or term you could give me to where I could borrow
04:13to, you know, kind of make it seem like I know the game more than I do?
04:17Yeah, like when there's a penalty, you can say, oh, we're going on the PP.
04:21There it is.
04:22I remember that one.
04:24Man with three kids.
04:25I remember that one.
04:26You know what PP stands for.
04:28Power play, man.
04:29Just checking.
04:30Just checking.
04:31I mean, me with a three-year-old, it has different meanings in my house, Patrick.
04:36I mean, certainly at this point.
04:38So you've got this great group of young stars in the making in San Jose.
04:43What is the learning curve of being like that?
04:45Because you were the number two pick overall, taken only behind Jumbo,
04:50which is kind of a curiosity looking backward.
04:53But, like, what is the learning curve and when should we expect them to be absolutely awesome?
04:59Well, I mean, they're well on their way now.
05:01I think, you know, they're fighting for a playoff spot this year.
05:05So obviously that's huge becoming a playoff team.
05:07And then, you know, once you get in the playoffs, then that's a whole new, you know, another beast where
05:13the play ups a couple levels as well.
05:16So, you know, you've got to go through some bumps in order to realize what it's going to take for
05:22a team to succeed.
05:24But, you know, like I said earlier, they've got some great young players that have won, you know, at lower
05:31levels,
05:31kind of understand what it takes to win and compete as a team.
05:34And, you know, it'll be a few years, but I think some great things are going to be coming in
05:39San Jose, the Sharks' way.
05:40Sharks, great.
05:41Patrick Marlowe joining us here live on the crossover with Willard, Debs, Stiney, and Goo.
05:46Patrick, what was your reaction to what just unfolded at the Olympics?
05:50And are you already seeing sort of the benefits of that in terms of the eyeballs and attention that are
05:57pointed right now at the NHL?
06:00Yeah, I think it was great hockey, first and foremost.
06:03And I think, you know, you look at each team's path it took to get to the gold.
06:07You know, it wasn't easy.
06:09There was a lot of overtime goals, a lot of, you know, game-tying goals, late in games.
06:14It was just such great hockey.
06:15And, you know, when players are playing for their country, you take so much pride in it.
06:22And, you know, you're not just playing for yourself.
06:23You're playing for everybody in your country.
06:25And that's what, you know, I'll remember most about the Olympics when I played in them.
06:31Let me ask you this, Patrick.
06:32From a fan-based perspective, how eager are the Shark fans to see this team make the playoffs
06:38and cheer them on?
06:40You can go, when you go to the games, you'll see it.
06:44The fans are hungry again.
06:45They feel something great is going to be coming with this group of players that are here,
06:51the young group that, you know, Mike and his team are putting together.
06:54So, I feel it already.
06:56And I know a lot of the fans are.
06:58And they're, you know, they're filling up the seats in the Shark Tank again, which was great to see.
07:02All-time leader in games played in the NHL.
07:05What kept you just putting the skates back on and getting back out there all those years?
07:10I just loved it.
07:11I loved every part about being out on the ice.
07:14It felt natural.
07:16It just kind of, you know, was a good way for me to turn my brain off, too, a little
07:19bit.
07:19Just to be in the moment and playing when you're in those games and everything's kind of split-second decisions.
07:25It's, you know, it's almost, you know, kind of like a calming focus in a way.
07:31I just love being with the guys as well, being on the road and going out to dinners.
07:36And, you know, later in my career when I was away from the family, that took a little bit of
07:40a hit,
07:40being on the road and stuff like that.
07:42But, you know, you miss certain things, being on the road.
07:48But the family was always supportive.
07:50So it was a great career, and I loved every minute of it.
07:54So Will Smith's clearly a dog person, right?
07:58Yeah.
07:59Oh, yeah.
08:01Well, we have lots of animals here, so he likes all animals.
08:04Nice.
08:04We kind of have a rule on this show that when one of the animals perks up, we have to
08:08learn about him.
08:09So who's making the noise there in the background?
08:11We got Lily.
08:13She's a six-and-a-half-year-old Bernadoodle, which has one of the loudest barks for a smaller dog.
08:21So, but, yeah, always on cue.
08:25Okay.
08:25What is she telling you right now?
08:27Does she want food?
08:28Does she want to go out, or is someone at the door?
08:30No, she's saying you've got to help mom bring in all the groceries from Costco.
08:34There you go.
08:35I thought she might be barking about there's a pee-pee going on.
08:40And I don't mean power play, Patrick.
08:42You don't know.
08:43Yeah, maybe.
08:44So, Patrick, for four guys who've never had the chance to see Macklin Celebrini in person,
08:51I would love to hear through your eyes what's special, what are we looking for when we see him tomorrow?
08:58I think you'll just see the intensity he plays with shift in and shift out on both when he has
09:04the puck and without the puck.
09:06He's very tenacious.
09:08That's probably one of the best words I could use to describe him.
09:11Like, he plays all areas of the game, offensively, defensively, with or without the puck.
09:18He's, you know, he's thinking the game, he's moving, and, you know, he's usually causing havoc, you know, trying to
09:24strip guys with pucks.
09:25So, I think that's probably one of the things, just how hard he works, but he's also very good at
09:31stripping pucks.
09:32And, you know, you're just going to have to see.
09:34It's hard to explain, but it's pretty awesome to watch.
09:37Can't wait to watch it.
09:37And I just wonder about his passing, because it looks like he's a phenomenal passer.
09:42So, who's better, Patrick, Macklin Celebrini or your old former teammate, Jumbo Joe Thornton?
09:48Uh-oh.
09:49Oh, geez.
09:50I don't, you know, I don't like comparing players.
09:53They're both, you know, great players.
09:55So, I won't do that.
09:56I got to play with Jumbo, and I was reshipping a lot of those passes.
10:00But to see, you know, Macklin doing it as well at such a young age, I mean, it's hard to
10:06compare him.
10:07But, you know, they both have a lot of the same attributes as far as the passing goes.
10:11They find guys in the right spots, and it's right on the tape.
10:15All right, Patty.
10:16So, how did it end up all going with Will Smith?
10:18And if the Sharks now come to you again, will you be opening your doors again, or are there too
10:25many animals?
10:27We'll have to see.
10:29We'll have to cross that bridge when it comes.
10:30But, no, Will actually stayed a second year with us, too.
10:34Oh.
10:34Yeah, he's still with us.
10:36So, he's still there.
10:38Yeah, we hope he stays another year, but I don't know.
10:41I think he probably wants a little bit of his own space.
10:44But, yeah, like I said, he's definitely part of the family.
10:48Hey, I guess if Macklin has an assist tomorrow, my friend Guru can say, hey, you put it right on
10:54the tape.
10:55There you go.
10:56Man, that's probably right in the sweet spot of the stick, I've got to believe.
11:01We literally sound like we're ordering dinner in France right now.
11:05Like, it's not that hard.
11:06It's not that hard.
11:08I love it.
11:08Hey, Patty, you're the best.
11:09Thanks, man.
11:10It was really nice of you to spend some time with us today.
11:12Thank you so much.
11:13It was great being with you guys.
11:14Thanks for having me.
11:15All right.
11:16Great, Patty Malone.
11:16I'm fired up, man.
11:17There it is.
