UNICEF slams NZ child abuse services
Aug 2, 2006 3:26 PM
The United Nations children's agency says services in New Zealand for children affected by domestic violence are under resourced, ad hoc and small scale.
A UNICEF report claims domestic violence is so common in New Zealand, most people know a child who is witnessing violence in their own home.

UNICEF's advocacy manager, David Kenkel, says children in abusive situations are often invisible victims, with little recognition of their trauma. He says if children aren't helped it increases the chances of them repeating the behaviour when they grow up.
Kenkel says there needs to be more funding and better co-ordination of programmes.
Women's Refuge says it has child advocates in about half of its 47 refuges and only eight are government funded.
