00:02This season on Highway Through Hell...
00:05Winters here.
00:06Yeah!
00:07Woo-hoo!
00:09Stop!
00:09Who's winching?
00:11Why are you winching?
00:12Catch it, guys!
00:13Hey!
00:14Whoa!
00:14Quick, quick!
00:15Before this guy gets hit,
00:17the cocahola can take your life.
00:18Whoa!
00:20Holy crap.
00:21It's time to go!
00:23Yo, that ambulance is here!
00:25Take that line off!
00:27No rest for the wicked some days.
00:28Let's go!
00:29Watch out!
00:30Whoa!
00:31Whoa!
00:32Shot!
00:33Shot!
00:34Don't do it!
00:35Whoa!
00:37You got the sphincter tight?
00:39It's gonna be unplayed.
00:42Merv's school of logic.
00:43Don't drive excavators into deep holes.
00:45Whoa!
00:47Guys, get tight!
00:49There it is!
00:50It's gonna be a fun season.
00:52What'd you guys do without me?
00:56Put the weather like...
00:58In southeast British Columbia...
01:01It's cold and clear.
01:04Snow has come early...
01:06To the southern Rocky Mountain Trench.
01:10Aperture is dropping, as we speak.
01:11A region lined by the Rockies to the east and the Purcell Mountains to the west.
01:19Hey, you just drive safe.
01:21It is home to Highway 93.
01:24A prime north-south transport route connecting the Trans-Canada Highway to the U.S. border.
01:34Heading into unfamiliar territory...
01:37I've never seen so many tow trucks.
01:39...a convoy of wreckers led by a new truck...
01:44A little bouncy, eh?
01:45...and Jamie Davis at the wheel.
01:48I just got licensed yesterday and I just got the decals done.
01:52HU-88 is the newest addition to his fleet.
01:57Two months have gone into buying this truck, organizing it, getting it on the road, and today's the day.
02:03I can go to work and use this thing.
02:06Nice new truck.
02:10Wow.
02:11With his beloved L.A. Rotator still in the shop...
02:16It's gonna be a showstopper when it's done.
02:18Jamie has had to shift gears.
02:21Looking good, eh?
02:22The newly purchased rescue truck HU-88...
02:26This is like a mobile office, mobile toolbox. It has everything in it.
02:31...is joining Bruce's recently remodeled 92 Peterbilt...
02:36This is beauty, this is men.
02:38...to round out Jamie's fleet this season.
02:43That's a nice looking peak you got there, bud.
02:46...running Bruce's truck today...
02:48I've been waiting for this for years.
02:52...heavy operator Mitch Mahood...
02:54You excited?
02:55Yeah.
02:56I like to have my hands here.
02:59...and his wife, Brooke.
03:01I've been pretty blessed to be able to get my hands on Bruce's truck.
03:05Jamie did an awesome job on this one.
03:08All the heavy wreckers are all going.
03:11Making up the rest of the convoy, 50-ton HR 100...
03:16...and two flagging trucks.
03:19We're working all across the province.
03:21We're just going wherever the customers need us.
03:24It takes a small army to do a wreck like this.
03:38We'll go organize this.
03:40All right.
03:43Man, you know...
03:44Oh, she slid on the wall for a while.
03:50So that means the load probably shifted.
03:54The trailer's fully loaded with cabinetry and granite countertops.
04:00The load's very heavy.
04:04You just want to look...
04:08Miraculously...
04:08Well, it hadn't broken, so that's good.
04:10The fully loaded rig is in nearly perfect condition.
04:14We need to get it up without it breaking apart.
04:18It's going to be tough.
04:19Oh, God.
04:42The truck will need a couple of big wreckers.
04:45On Highway 93, Jamie and his crew...
04:49Okay.
04:50The load probably shifted.
04:52...face a nearly mint tractor trailer on its side.
04:57It's a bigger challenge to recover that unit and make sure it's damage-free.
05:03He's kept it on its wheels for as long as he could.
05:09Earlier, the fully loaded semi lost the road, sliding along the bank before coming to a stop.
05:20Nothing looks broken.
05:21But to recover the rig undamaged, offloading the cargo is not an option.
05:28When you open these back doors, you never know what's going to happen.
05:32The doors are quite a bit of strength through the trailer.
05:35We don't want to go there.
05:37Ah, ah, it needs bags.
05:39It needs bags.
05:43Jamie decides to deploy a specialized tool.
05:47This would be a classic airbag job.
05:50We have a perfect surface to use airbags on here.
05:53We've got gaps at the front, gaps at the back of the trailer.
05:57And if you're in the airbag business, you like gaps.
06:00Hey, Martin, only the big ones.
06:03Helping Jamie today, swamper Martin Steffek.
06:08I always bring Martin with me to an airbag job because he's this big, strong Polish guy.
06:15In charge of traffic control.
06:17With recovery, safety is the most important thing.
06:21Jamie's stepson, Brandon Codales.
06:24I've been flagging since 16 years old, so just about 14 years now.
06:29Knowing that I can be useful on the team is a good feeling.
06:32Hey, Alexis.
06:33I'm going to put a cone right here.
06:35In the second flagging truck.
06:37And this is where your truck's going to be, okay?
06:40Okay, thank you.
06:42His 19-year-old sister, Alexis Davis.
06:45I have never flagged in my life.
06:48I want to learn all of it, inside and out, being in this industry.
06:54Last one is a little Ford car.
06:56Okay, put your stop side up.
06:58Copy.
06:59We're going to have to be parked in the one lane.
07:01There's no shoulder of the road, and flagging is a big part of this job.
07:06Without it, nothing happens.
07:11The perimeter's set.
07:13The crew gets to work.
07:16The biggest gap we got is back here.
07:20Yeah, let's try to get one down here.
07:23The lower you get it, the better.
07:27Wherever you can put an airbag in, that's the first thing you do, just to start the lift.
07:32And then we'll put a strap over the back end.
07:34Nice.
07:36We want to be able to fit the straps underneath the back corner of the trailer.
07:42The first bag is in place.
07:45Looks like a beautiful sunny day, but she's cold.
07:48Minus 12.
07:49So, uh, not exactly warm.
07:53This thing starts like a champ every time.
07:56But as Jamie fires up the air compressor.
08:04It's not wanting to start.
08:06It's cold, yeah.
08:07Everything becomes kind of more and more difficult.
08:26It's a beautiful day, eh?
08:281,000 kilometers northwest.
08:32Near the central interior city of Quesnel.
08:40An auto 50-ton is on the move.
08:43I'm heading north of Quesnel.
08:46With owner operator, Rob Barber.
08:50We're heading out to recover an excavator that's in the ditch.
08:54The customers, in the last five or six years, he's got into logging quite a bit.
09:00Him and his son do it together.
09:04Today's job takes Rob off the blacktop.
09:09Ah, the road's quite narrow.
09:11For a back road recovery.
09:13It's a little tighter, with ditches on the sides, with not a whole lot of space.
09:19Whoa!
09:19On a narrow turn, he arrives to an upside-down log loader, 20 feet below the road.
09:28They cut the corner too tight, and it fell off the low bed and rolled onto its roof.
09:35Working with limited space.
09:37You can't really get a big angle to do much.
09:40They'll try to flip the loader over, and hope to walk it out of the ditch.
09:45I have rolled over excavators bigger than this.
09:48But the road is not wide enough to get a true good angle, to cleanly roll it over and make
09:54it comfortable.
09:56To add more muscle, a TD-20E dozer.
10:01Rob's on speed dial.
10:02And the owner of the log loader, Larry Borutsky.
10:06He always gets our trucks and brings them home.
10:10He can drive down into the ditches, where I can't go, to get a better angle of it.
10:16I'm thinking right here.
10:19You think you can pull it from there?
10:22Yeah.
10:23Can you put much tension on that arm?
10:27Also on hand?
10:29Yeah.
10:30Larry's business partner and son, Joey Borutsky.
10:35We're gonna have Larry spin it so that the tracks are facing up the hill.
10:39So when it rolls over, the tracks will sit flat on the ground and not halfway up the bank.
10:46You pull from your winch?
10:47Yeah.
10:51A line from the dozer will hook on to the log loader's arm, spinning it 90 degrees.
11:00Then a line from the 50-ton will roll it back onto its tracks.
11:08Incoming, Aaron.
11:09Larry's crew rigs a chain to the boom.
11:15Just watch the hydraulic lines and everything.
11:20We got that pinhole.
11:22If we could get through that, then we wouldn't be anywhere near our hydraulic lines.
11:32Okay, it's hooked up.
11:34I guess we're gonna find out in a minute if that's gonna work or not.
11:37We've hooked the old dozer up to the excavator.
11:40Okay, are we ready?
11:42I think so.
11:51Kind of a max pull for that line to move that machine sideways.
11:57Fingers crossed.
11:59We hope we don't break anything.
12:08There it goes.
12:11There it goes.
12:12Oh!
12:17Outside Quenelle.
12:23A risky log loader spin.
12:30There goes the cable.
12:31Is suddenly sidelined.
12:34Did it break it?
12:35Yeah.
12:36That might be more than that wire rope wants to deal with.
12:40The pole.
12:41I think so.
12:43Was too much for the one inch thick winch line.
12:47Just trying to break it free and the main line broke.
12:50Nobody was hurt.
12:52Luckily.
12:54You gonna run the cat down to the shop?
12:56Nope.
12:57Everything's right here.
12:58Larry has another one.
13:00We're gonna try to put it back on the cat and try it again.
13:04But before replacing the line.
13:07What if we hooked in that hole we're at.
13:09And another chain on the end of the boom.
13:13Rob and Larry hatch a new plan.
13:16Do a V.
13:17Yeah.
13:18Yeah.
13:18Get leverage.
13:19Yeah.
13:20And this time.
13:21You think it would help if you were on that track closest to you?
13:26Pulling it up.
13:27They'll add in the 50 ton.
13:29I can try.
13:31I'll hook my wrecker to it and try to give him a little assist.
13:34See if we can spin it around.
13:37I need a bit more.
13:41Okay.
13:42While Larry replaces the dozer's line.
13:47How are you making out, Joey?
13:49Joey re-rigs to the loader.
13:51I just forgot this hooked up.
13:56With a line from the dozer hooked to two chains on the loader arm.
14:02And the 50 ton hooked to the track.
14:06Together, they'll spin the loader 90 degrees.
14:14Try to throw it in the far side of that track.
14:18Hit!
14:19I should be able to have enough power.
14:22Are you ready?
14:23Yeah, I'll get it one.
14:26Here's hoping for the best.
14:38The new plan...
14:41...immediately spins the loader.
14:52That looks pretty good, isn't it?
14:53Yeah, it looks good.
14:55We didn't really even have to pull that hard.
14:59I'm surprised.
15:00It came over pretty easy.
15:02Rotated into position.
15:04So I think if I put mine to this side of the track.
15:09Same sort of spot, just on the other side?
15:11Yeah.
15:13They can start re-rigging to roll it right side up.
15:17We're just going to try to get two of us hooked to the side of this thing so we can
15:20hopefully roll it onto his feet.
15:23Once upright, the loader can walk out and get back to work.
15:28And just wrap it right around the whole track?
15:31Yeah.
15:33Just make sure everybody's clear when I release my tension, eh?
15:41But as Larry slacks his line...
15:44Hey!
15:45Whoa!
15:46The loader...
15:47...rolls away from them.
15:51That's worse.
15:5810 hours southeast
16:03on Highway 93
16:05It's cold, yeah, it's not wanting to start.
16:08A stalled compressor
16:10has frozen Jamie's airbag recovery.
16:14Cold weather makes the job take twice as long.
16:19But Jamie...
16:20We'll just change out that spark bug and heat it up a bit.
16:24Has a trick up his sleeve.
16:28Mm-hmm.
16:30Try that.
16:31If you pull the spark bug out and heat it up with a torch,
16:34generally, it will start.
16:41Oh, here we go.
16:43One of them old, faithful machines.
16:45Like me, it's an old thing that won't die.
16:47All right.
16:48That was a temporary roadblock for us.
16:51Take care of the roadblock and move on.
16:54Want to wind her up?
16:56Okay.
16:58Jamie starts inflating the first airbag.
17:01Is it pushing it up?
17:03Yeah, it's starting to come up now.
17:06The airbag at the very back is going to give us an initial lift.
17:11But before they can place any more bags under the trailer...
17:15Like, is it wrecking the wall anywhere?
17:18Yeah, it's kinking in a bit.
17:21Yeah.
17:23Jamie needs some added support.
17:27So, we'll get a strap around here.
17:30Let's bring your big wreckers in and pull down on the trailer, okay?
17:33We want to be able to get the recovery strap around the back end
17:36and then look for other places where we can put some more bags under.
17:42The carefully placed airbags will raise the trailer.
17:47Then lines from HR 100 and Bruce's truck will hold it in place
17:54so the bags can be repositioned
17:57until the wreckers can safely take over and winch it back onto its wheels.
18:07Okay, pull it over.
18:09The trucks are only there to take up the slack.
18:13Is that enough?
18:17Oh, you got it. Okay.
18:20And they're really in place to be a safety in case something goes wrong.
18:24You pull yours up a bit?
18:26The airbags are doing the work here, not the big wreckers.
18:31Tighten up a bit.
18:37Tighten, I'll stop.
18:39The M2.
18:42They're pulling too hard already.
18:45They're pulling, thinking they're winning the war here, but they're not.
18:48We could lose this whole trailer.
18:51The trailer could break apart.
18:53Why is the trailer moving?
18:55The load could be sitting on the side of the road.
18:58I can't stop.
19:02What's going on?
19:03Why is the trailer moving?
19:05On southeastern BC's Highway 93.
19:10Are you guys not listening?
19:13Jamie.
19:15Why are you winching?
19:17I said stop.
19:18Pulls the emergency brake on a huge airbag recovery.
19:24I haven't had a chance to look at this side.
19:26You can pull the wall out.
19:29Earlier, the fully loaded semi lost the road, sliding along the bank before coming to a stop with minimal damage.
19:41Up the road.
19:42I'd rather be working on the wreck because then I wouldn't be as cold.
19:47Alexis shivers through her first flagging job.
19:50You know, a guy gets too greedy.
19:52As Jamie struggles.
19:55They have the powerful big wreckers, but what they're going to do is pull the trailer off of the bags.
20:00The bags are going to blow out and we can have a failure here.
20:03And I'm sitting here looking at the wall, watching it bounce.
20:06Right?
20:09Now.
20:10You see it bulging right there?
20:12With the wreckers holding steady.
20:15Like right in about here.
20:16If you can.
20:17Not too far back, but right about there.
20:20Jamie's crew hustles to get the rest of the airbags in position.
20:25Let's get it down as low as you can.
20:26Ah, there we go.
20:28Let's get another bag ready to go.
20:31Okay.
20:33Right down as long as you can go with that.
20:35Right to the bottom.
20:36Push.
20:38Way down, way down.
20:39The goal here is to get the airbags down low.
20:42Oh yeah, right there baby, that's it.
20:44We know that the load is down there.
20:46And we want the airbags pushing against that load and lifting.
20:55Okay, she's going up.
21:00That wall okay?
21:02I think so, yeah.
21:07So we're at the point now where the bags can do their work.
21:10We've got a nice, really nice bank to push against here.
21:14I'm happy that the bags are all positioned properly.
21:17They're all lifting load.
21:20Okay, you might as well get on the wreckers now.
21:22Okay.
21:23And then only take up the slack.
21:26Do not pull.
21:28I'll tell you when to pull.
21:30Okay.
21:31Now that I've got these guys straightened out
21:33that we're not going to pull this load
21:35with the wreckers at this point,
21:36we've got to let the airbags do their job.
21:39The bags need the weight, right?
21:41Yeah.
21:42It's only take up the slack
21:44and then at the very last minute, it'll be down.
21:46Yeah.
21:47Without weight on those bags,
21:48we could go from,
21:50hey, this is a perfect airbag job
21:52and everything's going great
21:56to a failure in blink of an eye.
22:00Whoa, whoa, whoa.
22:0515 minutes northeast of Cornell,
22:08a log loader that needs riding
22:13has rolled
22:14the wrong way.
22:19The escalator kind of tipped over to a negative.
22:22It'll make it harder to pull it
22:24because we'll have to stand it up onto the cab of itself
22:27and then back onto its tracks.
22:29But Rob...
22:30Should we go the other way?
22:32...finds a silver lining.
22:35That's what I'm thinking
22:36and then we wouldn't touch the cab.
22:39The escalator kind of tipped away from the cab.
22:41It's already that way.
22:43Yeah.
22:43So now we can pull it without hurting the cab.
22:47I can sit up kind of in that corner.
22:50Do you think you can get to that right there?
22:52Through these trees, I should be all right.
22:54Okay, I'm going to pull ahead.
22:56I'm going to bring the dozer over
22:57to help me roll it over.
22:59It'll take a lot of pressure off me.
23:03With both machines on the road,
23:06you'd go on the heavy end.
23:08They can start rigging for the improvised pull.
23:15Where's it going to reach?
23:17There.
23:20We're trying to roll it over without hurting it.
23:23Larry's got lots of work for it
23:25and he can't really lose it at this point.
23:28Ready?
23:29Yeah.
23:30Start pulling.
23:51There he goes.
23:55That worked out good, huh?
23:57Yeah.
23:57We worked good as a team.
24:02It went really smooth.
24:03The cab itself was right in the bottom of the ditch line,
24:06so it was actually protected.
24:08We're going to check the fluids,
24:09pull the injectors,
24:10and hopefully fire it up.
24:22And Larry's loader is back in business.
24:27It didn't do any damage,
24:28and Larry's son's going to drive it away today.
24:36Well, thank you much, sir.
24:38Have a good day.
24:40We'll definitely be a touch.
24:41Yeah.
24:42Again.
24:44As nice as a family business that we are
24:46can help another family business
24:48to get going and not lose any downtime.
24:52Yeah, it all worked out good.
24:54The mood for the season is good.
24:56We're hoping we get lots of snow,
24:58but what comes is what comes.
25:00You keep moving forward.
25:08Single lane right now.
25:10Left open, step in.
25:13Back on Highway 93.
25:15Get her back to the left.
25:18Jamie's airbag job.
25:20Whoa, whoa, whoa.
25:22Hey!
25:23Stop pulling!
25:24Could be slipping away.
25:29Bags will pop out if they have no weight.
25:32A closer look.
25:34Seems to me the load is mostly to the front section here.
25:37Reveals there's no load on the wall
25:40for the airbag to push against.
25:44I don't want the bag pushing against an empty trailer.
25:49There's no strength there.
25:51Still pumping?
25:52But the remaining airbags...
25:54Oh, yeah.
25:54These three are doing it.
25:55...are still doing the heavy lifting.
25:58As the load comes up,
26:00the weight on the bags becomes less and less
26:02and less and less as it inflates.
26:05They're getting there.
26:07The load then is transferred to the wheels.
26:12That's good.
26:15It's a very critical point
26:17when the wreckers take over from the airbags.
26:21And I've got to make that call.
26:24As the airbags reach their maximum capacity...
26:27Okay, go!
26:29...the job reaches a tipping point.
26:32Pull, pull.
26:34Your straps are taking over.
26:36This is the point of no return.
26:49It's a pretty zen moment
26:50when the trailer's upright,
26:52the trailer's not broken in half.
26:54Good.
26:55Beauty.
26:56Okay, so pull these bags up now.
27:00What we want to do
27:01is just winch the truck back on the road.
27:03Even after the unit's upright,
27:05there's still a little ways to go
27:06to pull it out of the ditch.
27:09With HR 100 re-rigged
27:11to the front of the tractor,
27:14and Bruce's truck
27:16still strapped
27:17to the rear of the trailer,
27:19Are the tractor brakes released?
27:21Yeah!
27:24Mitch steers the truck
27:25as Jamie winches it out of the ditch.
27:31Once we get this thing kind of 90,
27:33it'll keep the trailer up.
27:35We're going to winch the tractor up first,
27:38which actually puts the unit in an L position,
27:41and the tractor actually will assist
27:44in having the unit not flip over again.
27:46Crank your wheel to the left.
27:53But as the tractor
27:54makes its way up the bank...
27:56Trailer's coming off the ground.
27:59...the trailer starts to tilt.
28:02Give it a little bit.
28:04Oh, it's going to go.
28:08Looks like they're going to get ready
28:10to recover it, but...
28:11On Highway 93...
28:14Crank your wheel to the left.
28:19Jamie's recently righted semi...
28:23Trailer's coming off the ground.
28:26...threatened...
28:28Oh, it's going to go.
28:30...to roll back over.
28:33Okay, stop.
28:36The problem we have here is that
28:38the unit's still quite tippy,
28:39and we want to pull that trailer down somewhat.
28:43To secure the trailer...
28:46I got a winch, too.
28:48Jamie puts his newest truck,
28:51HU-88, to the test.
28:54Okay.
28:54So I'm just going to bring the rescue up here,
28:56and we'll put a hold line on it.
28:59It's a five-ton winch in the front,
29:01hydraulically powered,
29:03so it's perfect new use for this truck.
29:09Okay, let's go.
29:10Let's give her.
29:12I had no idea that the winches on the utility truck,
29:15they were that strong,
29:15to be able to handle it.
29:17I'm impressed.
29:21Turn the wheel to the right.
29:27Two hours since Jamie's team arrived.
29:30I could probably drive it out now.
29:33Unhook her, yeah.
29:35The semi is back on pavement.
29:39She came out really nice.
29:40Everybody worked together,
29:41and there's a few tense moments when you're doing that,
29:44but she's really good now, out on the road.
29:48There's a little bit of damage here, right here,
29:50I can see, but...
29:51Okay.
29:52I don't think there's a problem with this truck, though.
29:54It's drivable.
29:55I call it the holy grail,
29:57where the customer can actually take this trailer and truck
30:00and the load and drive away,
30:01and there's no loss.
30:03It's definitely one of those holy grail moments.
30:05The customer should be happy.
30:06He can carry on with his day.
30:07We're going to go into town and buy the crew lunch.
30:10I think having the utility truck in the fleet
30:14re-energizes everybody to know that we've been updating,
30:18adding some more things to the fleet.
30:21It's signaling kind of a new era for us.
30:25You on the radio, Brendan?
30:28Yeah, go ahead.
30:29Can you guys hold traffic so I can get out of here?
30:31Alexis, can you hold traffic?
30:33Yes.
30:34It's different.
30:35Very different being on this side of it.
30:40Nice work.
30:43Looks like he's clear.
31:09Six hundred and eighty kilometers west.
31:12Pretty bad.
31:13The first snowstorm of the season.
31:17Coming down pretty heavy.
31:20Is slamming drivers on Highway 5A.
31:245A is pretty windy and dangerous.
31:26You never know what you're going to face,
31:28especially in the wintertime.
31:30It's also a key connector
31:32between Highway 3 and the Coquihalla.
31:35Even though the maintenance crews are out there,
31:38a flash freeze can happen instantly
31:40and everything changes.
31:41Did they put a plow to that road yet?
31:45Midway between Princeton and Merritt.
31:52A B-train loaded with rock truck tires
31:56stretches across the road
32:01completely blocking the vital route.
32:04Good job, big truck.
32:06Yeah, block the frickin' road.
32:09Already on scene.
32:11This is a little bit crazy.
32:13Light duty operators from reliable towing.
32:18All right, so now we're on the way to the next one.
32:21Worked the south side of the blockage.
32:25It's the first big one that's here.
32:28Heading to the north side, out of Merritt.
32:32Highway is closed.
32:34Got reports about B-train stuck in the middle of it.
32:37Reliable operator John Dodds
32:40in a 35-ton wrecker.
32:44With RCMP call-outs, it's always an urgent call.
32:47They're calling, the road's got to get open.
32:51But 400 metres short of the blockage.
32:54It's starting to feel like one of those nights.
32:57John spots another stranded trucker.
33:00Just cresting a hill on a blank corner.
33:03Teetering on the shoulder.
33:05He's not in a good spot at all,
33:07so we want to get him out and back on the road.
33:10Oh yeah, she's slick.
33:12He moves in for a pull-out.
33:16Oh!
33:18But his wrecker...
33:20She is icy!
33:22...slides 30 metres
33:25before coming to a stop.
33:29You're the first one on my list here, bud,
33:32but I'm going to throw a set of chains on
33:34so I don't just keep sliding down the mountain here.
33:37And then I'll get you all figured out.
33:42The close call has John chaining up.
33:48Oh!
33:50But before he can get the second set on...
33:53It's always pretty sketchy
33:55when your truck starts sliding away on you.
33:57It's on, it's on, it's on.
34:00I'm going to throw a set of chains on.
34:0233 kilometres north of Princeton,
34:07a flash freeze on Highway 5A
34:12has John's record...
34:15Whoa!
34:16...on a slippery slope.
34:19Quick reaction was just throw a chain in front of it.
34:22Okay, stop, stop, stop.
34:24It starts making your heart throb quite a bit,
34:27seeing 30,000 pounds of going down a hill.
34:30Stop.
34:31John's quick thinking with the tire chain...
34:35Not ideal.
34:37...stops his wrecker from sliding.
34:40Didn't think it was going to stop.
34:42Six feet short of a 100-foot drop.
34:47That's the first time I've ever had a truck slide away on me.
34:54So I just threw the spade into the ground from the side puller,
34:57and hopefully that'll plant us for a second
35:02while I throw these chains on.
35:04John anchors his 35-ton.
35:08There, maybe we won't slide away now.
35:11I'd say she's slick.
35:15I had half that one chain on and it started rolling away.
35:22All righty.
35:24Now he can refocus on the stranded semi.
35:29I just want to get out of this before I cruise worse.
35:33Same thing's going to happen to you the second we pull that out.
35:36Yeah.
35:37Try to get you chained up.
35:39At least on one axle.
35:41Even if we can get them all loose...
35:44John starts...
35:45I don't want anything on this hill without chains at this point.
35:49By making sure the driver has the right traction
35:53for the flash freeze conditions.
35:56You don't want to have a truck take off down the hill.
35:58It could kill somebody.
36:00Do what you can to get your chains all tightened up.
36:03Okay.
36:06He leaves the driver to chain up.
36:08If we pull him out first,
36:10there's risk of him sliding down the hill
36:12into this other truck at the bottom of the hill.
36:15All right.
36:16Good luck.
36:16Okay.
36:17Thanks.
36:17And carefully starts backing down
36:21towards the main blockage.
36:24Record coming down the hill here.
36:29On the other side...
36:31Traffic is still blocked.
36:33Northbound traffic is backing up.
36:37They had a couple of plow trucks here,
36:39but they couldn't get by.
36:43Within minutes...
36:45Oh, buddy!
36:47John arrives at the massive B train
36:50stretched across the narrow road.
36:53He's blocking both lanes.
36:56These tires, they're definitely not light.
36:58They weigh about 10,000 pounds each.
37:01Already on scene...
37:04Oh, is it to come down?
37:05It's slick.
37:06Reliable tow operators
37:08whose light-duty trucks
37:10are stuck on the south side of the wreck.
37:14Woo!
37:16Police are eager to open the critical route.
37:19This is the only vehicle we know of now
37:22that's impeding any traffic.
37:25So once this is cleared,
37:26we hope to have traffic moving again.
37:28I'll just keep it doubled.
37:30Working in a narrow space...
37:32We're going to be in for a bit of a battle tonight.
37:34John is counting on his side-puller.
37:38We'll try to grab her on the fifth-wheel plate.
37:40To move the 100,000-pound load.
37:45See if it all...
37:46Now we're fighting some pretty heavy weight.
37:49Okay, we'll give her a go.
37:52We're going to open the road again.
37:54We're going to get the job done.
38:08We're pulling, and all we're doing
38:10is stalling the winch.
38:12We're definitely fighting it here.
38:17No match.
38:20It's one of those days.
38:26Highway is open yet?
38:28North of Princeton.
38:30There's a truck down at the bottom of the hill here.
38:33Vital Highway 5A is shut down.
38:37While Team Reliable wrestles a super-heavy super-beam
38:43stretched across the highway.
38:47We've got to get this thing off the road
38:48and open it up quick
38:49so that the maintenance crew can get through
38:51and deal with the ice conditions.
38:54But John's 35-ton side puller...
38:59Outmatched!
39:01...can't handle the 100,000-pound load of tires.
39:06Between the weight of the truck
39:08and the ice on the roads,
39:09we're not going to be able to pull it out that way.
39:12He might end up needing to roll ahead
39:14a tiny bit as we go.
39:17The gravel truck's been out from the Princeton side,
39:20so there's tons of gravel in front of him now.
39:23John looks to take advantage of the traction
39:26highway maintenance has laid down below them.
39:30I think gravity's going to be our best friend on this
39:33with him facing downhill already.
39:35He's already got a set of chains on.
39:38Hopefully we'll be able to just kind of let him roll ahead
39:41and just hold the weight
39:42while he comes up over the bank here.
39:45We've got a plan B in place.
39:47We are hoping it's going to work.
39:49Good to go!
39:53With a side puller rigged to the rear frame of the trailer.
39:58You got a copy?
40:01Yep.
40:02John?
40:02Now, whenever you're ready,
40:04just let me know and we'll start pulling, bud.
40:07Directs the driver to start rolling downhill.
40:11Okay, yeah, we'll go ahead nice and slow.
40:16Yep, keep her going.
40:19The 35 ton.
40:22Slow it out.
40:23Hold on, hold on.
40:24We'll try to hold it from sliding back into the ditch.
40:29We're just letting the line out as he's going.
40:32Nice and slow.
40:34Roll ahead again.
40:40We're making progress.
40:43He's slowly inching forward.
40:46Okay, hold there.
40:48I think we're going to have it done
40:49in the next couple minutes here.
40:51I'm going to unhook.
40:52We're going to roll you just a little bit more.
40:54With the tractor fully on gravel.
41:00Okay, take her nice and slow.
41:02John lets the driver take over.
41:06Hey, you should be open.
41:08Got a lot of luck!
41:11But before he can call it a day...
41:13We still got to get up to the top
41:15and get that next truck going.
41:19John hustles back up the hill
41:21to the stranded trucker.
41:27Alrighty.
41:29With the semi now chained up,
41:32John quickly rigs a strap to the front.
41:36Okay.
41:38And once again,
41:40leans on his side puller.
41:43It's coming up nice now.
41:46To pull the unit clear of the ditch.
41:52I definitely feel proud of myself
41:53for getting it done with this truck.
41:56Alrighty, bud.
41:57Get out of here.
41:59Go ride the brakes!
42:08This hill, it's all cleared up now.
42:11We'll let the maintenance crew get out here
42:13and sand it and salt it really good
42:15before anything else happens.
42:18Move home and go to bed!
42:20I'm always impressed with my team.
42:22And today is no different.
42:27There really isn't much that we can't do.
42:30I'm sure we're going to see a lot more of this
42:32over the next few months.
42:33And we'll be prepared to handle every situation.
42:38Woo-hoo!
42:41I think the winter has just begun.
42:44Oh, yeah!
42:47Next time, on Highway Through Hell...
42:50Woo!
42:50Oh, slickie-poo.
42:53Slippin' and slidin'.
42:55Woo-hoo!
42:57Reliable...
42:57Oh, ah!
42:58...in the danger zone...
43:00Real quick!
43:00Before this guy gets hit!
43:02...quiring...
43:02Rock, slide, Sasquatch, task.
43:04Time to go!
43:05...works the hill.
43:06Could be anything that closes the road.
43:08Wow.
43:08And cuttin' loose...
43:11Oh, crap, hold up.
43:12...with auto...
43:1343 metric ton of wood on that truck.
43:46...
