00:01is there anything more satisfying and exciting than being on holiday well yes a bargain holiday
00:12of course getting champagne tastes for your beer budget but is that possible when even the average
00:20UK holiday costs more than 1200 quid for just five days from all-inclusive to long-haul or
00:29short breaks I want the inside track on the best way to find a bargain to do that I've persuaded
00:38a crack squad of experts to spill their secrets insiders who've worked at the heart of the holiday
00:45industry at some of the biggest companies in the business I've spent more than 20 years working for
00:51different airlines such as British Airways and KLM I work for companies including Thomas Cook
00:56Tui and Easy Share holidays and the country's leading brands knock knock will take me behind
01:02closed doors this is where the magic happens from hotels and holiday operators to airlines travel
01:10agencies and even cruise lines they're sharing their travel industry tricks to holidaying better
01:17for less this time long haul we've got the money saving hacks to help you holiday for less
01:29that is a massive saving we're shining a light on fake reviews if I am able to get 10 positive
01:41reviews
01:42submitted to your business listing will you give me a hundred dollars we've got the best in flight
01:48hacks from how to upgrade your meal without upgrading your ticket how is that possible to flying long
01:55distance for low cost three hours long that's the sweet spot for making money so sit back and relax
02:03while I show you how to have a long haul holiday on a short haul budget the UK has seen
02:16a surge in long
02:17haul trips abroad research suggests a third of us are planning a far-flung trip what can I say it
02:24was
02:25absolutely amazing we've been swimming every day with countries like Thailand and Vietnam proving to
02:33be more cost-effective than some European destinations you can see why oh wow people love to go on long
02:41haul holidays you know it gives them the ability to be able to travel for a bit longer experience
02:46different destinations and also the further away we get from home culturally we're in a completely new
02:52world sandy beaches five-star hotels and beautiful scenery long-haul holidays really are the ultimate
03:02getaway and with the average price of a long-haul holiday trip costing around one thousand three
03:08hundred pounds per person they're also the ultimate investment so how can we save money when
03:17traveling further afield for faraway holidays there's one thing that can really set the price soaring
03:25flights my name is John Grant my career began working for some of Europe's major airlines British Airways
03:33British Caledonian and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines when it comes to flights John's got the fair facts
03:39ultimately as a passenger we pay for a ticket the airline only receives an element of that fair and in
03:48the United Kingdom we have to pay airport departure tax and that is a very significant proportion of the airfare
03:57on
03:57some routes the UK has one of the highest rates of air passenger duty in the world it ranges from
04:0614 pounds
04:07for domestic to 224 pounds for the longest flights that's 224 pounds on top of your fare it's a significant
04:19source of revenue for the government last year the Treasury collected over 4 billion pounds and the tax is
04:26set to be increased by about 14 percent in April but you could find a way around it one of
04:33the ways to avoid
04:34airport departure tax is to start your long-haul journey from an airport outside of the United Kingdom
04:43that can save you up to 250 pounds per passenger and that for a family of four suddenly becomes a
04:50thousand pounds
04:52one person who knows all about this hack is holiday expert Chelsea Dickinson she's a sun-seeking money-saving
05:00guru who's helped thousands of followers save money on their holidays and she's no stranger to long haul
05:07either hello from Napa Tokyo I'm here to find out how we can all get cheap long-distance flights hi
05:15Chelsea
05:16hi Jasmine how's it going good thanks I thought we'd get a little bit geeky today okay I could do
05:24geeky
05:25yeah and talk about something very sexy taxes and fees everyone's favorite topic yeah because it does
05:35really impact the overall price of your flight whilst we all want to get that direct flight from the UK
05:41unfortunately that can sometimes be the most expensive way to travel but it's also the convenience
05:48factor isn't it I know I hear what you're saying however I think it's really important to understand
05:54what makes up that price that we see on the screen because it does mean further down the line you're
06:00going to be able to find some ways to hack your way around it to save yourself a bit of
06:04cash
06:06I've got an example for you that hopefully will show how taxes and fees can really change the price
06:13and even save some money now my ears have pricked up so found a flight from London all the way
06:21down to
06:22Cape Town so this flight would cost you 766 pounds the airfare for this flight is 477 pounds the remaining
06:36289 pounds is taxes and fees that's almost 40 percent of the ticket price so next we are looking at
06:46flying
06:46from Dublin the total flight price from Dublin is a lot lower it's 572 pounds that's quite a saving
06:58don't you think which is great if you live in Dublin and you can fly from Dublin but obviously if
07:04you live
07:04somewhere else you've got to factor in the cost of getting from wherever you are to Dublin yeah 100%
07:10so
07:11factoring in the price of a flight to get us to Dublin the total price would actually be 630 pounds
07:17so that's still quite a significant saving if you fly from Dublin the taxes and fees are only 18%
07:26of
07:26the ticket price so even with the extra flight you're still saving 136 pounds for a family of four that's
07:36over 500 pounds saved if you're lucky enough to live in the Scottish Highlands or Northern Ireland there's an
07:46added bonus you don't pay air passenger duty on long-haul flights at all that means if you fly from
07:56Inverness to
07:56London Heathrow to Melbourne you would pay 213 pounds less than if you boarded the same Heathrow to Melbourne flight
08:05in London
08:06even though you're also paying for the Inverness to Heathrow leg but sadly you can't beat the system
08:13by booking Inverness to Melbourne and only getting on at Heathrow if you miss that flight it cancels the
08:20booking frequent flyer Lloyd knows how not to get caught out you have to still go to the destination
08:26don't just think you can book that flight and get on the second flight in London if you want really
08:32stellar
08:32savings and you're in the mood to treat yourself why not take a look at business class I've got this
08:38flight here it's from London to all the way over here to Bangkok I'm not sure if I am ready
08:49for this
08:50price business class from London to Bangkok three thousand and twenty two pounds that's a bit spendy no
08:59one's saying yes to that are they no so we're gonna fly from Rome Rome's a good one to be
09:07checking for
09:08those are cheaper business class rates business class from Rome to Bangkok is 1173 pounds and with
09:20a flight to Rome on top of it as well you're looking at more around the 1295 pounds that's a
09:26massive
09:27difference such a huge difference the airfare taxes and fees are all cheaper from Rome and even with the
09:35flight there you're still saving a whopping 1,700 pounds one thing that is worth bearing in mind if
09:43you ever have to cancel your flights and you don't have any refundable rights you can still claim some
09:50of those taxes and fees back so in most cases most airlines will allow you to get your air passenger
09:56duty back and sometimes a few of the airport surcharges as well so say if you cancel this flight you
10:02might
10:02get around a hundred pounds back they don't tell you that do you know really sneaky who said tax was
10:11boring you also have to consider whether there's an environmental impact to breaking up your journey
10:20like yeah we need to think about the total carbon emissions of our journey and there's some really handy
10:27carbon emissions calculators out there on the internet that you can use there's one on the UN
10:33website and there are also ways that you can offset your carbon emissions as well websites like carbon
10:40footprint calm and my climate org will help you calculate your flights carbon emissions and if you
10:46want to offset emissions the easiest way to do it would be to opt in when you book your flight
10:52so if
10:53you're flying far away with family or splashing out on business class there are big savings to be made
11:01just make sure the first leg of your journey takes you somewhere with low air passenger duty and an
11:08airport with lower fees try Ireland Spain Portugal all have lower taxes and charges
11:20coming up how to hack your way to a better in-flight meal that's unbelievable and the far-flung destinations
11:29that are closer to home than you think I can fully see exactly why everyone says it's a juke from
11:35Hawaii
11:41I'm on a mission to get you the best tips to a cheap as chips long-haul holiday we've discovered
11:49a
11:49hack to slash the cost of your ticket that's a massive saving now what about upgrading your in-flight meal
12:01if you're going on a long flight chances are you've prepped everything you can to make it
12:07comfortable you've packed your pillow worn your comfiest clothes and downloaded your favorite shows
12:13but there's still one part of the journey that's up in the air and that's the food
12:20so this is our meal on our flight to Abu Dhabi
12:28the food was just not that we were stuck on this flight for 13 hours it looks absolutely grim
12:36from streaming films to sending emails there's a lot we can now do at 35 000 feet and yet there's
12:43one thing that still feels impossible and that's getting a good hot meal I'm John Strickland I've
12:51been in the airline industry over 40 years John's worked with numerous airlines BA KLM buzz airline food
13:00really is a point you could debate all day it's a differentiator for airlines mainly on long-haul
13:06flights and in their premium cabins by which I mean business class and premium economy their
13:11airlines want to present a really good offer a food and drink many years ago I had a almost a
13:18unique opportunity to rebrand an airline we did a huge amount of research around the meal tray what's
13:25on the meal tray what people touch on the meal tray where's the best place to put the hot on
13:31tray on the
13:31meal tray is it in front of them is it at the back of a tray is it to the
13:36left it was yeah I mean there's
13:38a lot of psychological research that goes into travel and you know the best products that you can
13:45create and it's not just psychology the airline scrutinize it's also the science of flavor to
13:54understand the lengths the industry goes to to tantalize our taste buds I'm going behind the scenes at
14:01one of the UK's largest in flight catering facilities if you've flown long haul out of London there's a
14:09good chance you've eaten a meal that was made here wow oh look the little trays I'm with executive chef
14:29Julian Dougmore to find out the secret ingredients to delivering a dish at 35,000 feet wow this is where
14:39the magic happens look at this so when you're flying at altitude you tend to not taste saltiness as much
14:49as you would do at ground level and you don't taste sweetness it has less effect on your palate oh
14:54that's
14:55so interesting so your taste buds aren't as switched on as they would normally be yes and and the way
15:02we
15:02compensate is using very tasty ingredients umami flavors it's often overlooked but umami is our fifth
15:10basic taste it's a strong savory taste and it's the one flavor that keeps its punch even when we're flying
15:20high which is why chefs like Julian work hard to design meals full of high umami foods so we have
15:29chicken mousseline which is like a chicken mousse that we formed in this malt but it has got truffles
15:35and tarragon in there the chicken stock has also got mushrooms in it and then we've also done some
15:40roasted oyster mushrooms as well when it comes to umami more is more and Julian has plenty of creative
15:48ways to pack it into everything we eat on the plane so soy sauce miso we will also do things
15:57like
15:57seaweed as an example certain cheeses maybe like parmesan that just bring in their depth of flavor
16:03to the meal flavor isn't the only thing that's compromised cooking for altitude has a lot more
16:10complications than on the ground we've got a height restriction within the trays that fit into the
16:17flight carts and it has to be below that otherwise your product does not fit into the aircraft flight
16:22cart these little trays might be packed to precision on the ground but the real challenge comes in the sky
16:33so here we have a premium economy dish it is essentially fish and chips okay is that quite
16:40a tricky one to do on board the aircraft the way we get around trying to keep things crispy on
16:46board
16:46instead of using deep fried chips we will do roast potato wedges with regards to the deep fried fish
16:52itself how we try to manage in keeping it crispy is to make sure that we reheat the food within
16:58a set
16:59time frame so that we do not allow the build-up of steam which ultimately will make the fish soggy
17:05a
17:06bit soggy coating from tricky trays to soggy suppers plain food really is fighting against the odds but
17:18with limited options in the sky I want to find out if there are any hacks to make airplane food
17:23better
17:28hi nice to meet you please come have a seat this is Barry Smith he's a sensory scientist and he's
17:37got
17:37airplane dining down to a fine art so Barry why does airplane food have such a bad press well it's
17:47really
17:47the fault of the environment the sound of cabin noise white noise in your ears that has a suppressive
17:54effect on some of the things we can taste really yeah let's simulate the sounds of an aircraft noise
18:03is it really that loud it's really that loud it's about 89 to 95 decibels to help me understand how
18:11the
18:11noise of the cabin impacts my enjoyment of the food I'm going to try eating with some noise cancelling
18:18headphones on can you hear me how is that possible it's like the best cashew nut I've ever had in
18:37my life
18:38great that's unbelievable so that shows you just how much noise is interfering with our perception of
18:48the flavors that we're eating and as soon as we block that out and get you to concentrate on what's
18:54going on in the mouth you can even hear your own crunching but the intensity of the flavor comes out
18:59so noise cancelling means flavor enhancing but what if you don't have headphones well umami packed foods
19:07are immune to the cabin noise if you think of the things we could have on an aircraft that are
19:16not
19:16going to be affected by that loud noise in your ears they're going to be cherry tomatoes they're going
19:23to be parmesan they're even going to be things like tomato juice and champagne my two favorite drinks
19:34to have on board a plane is that a coincidence or what it's not you need to have something with
19:39lots
19:40of umami and the thing you can have on a plane that has lots of umami is tomato juice so
19:47that is going
19:48to have so much more flavor than any of the other drinks you can be given on board the good
19:53news is
19:54if we want to have a drink and make sure all that aroma reaches us then we should have champagne
20:02now we're talking yes so this is a very good drink to have when on an aircraft precisely because
20:09those bubbles that are coming out of the glass yeah they are delivering little packages of popping
20:16aroma some of them will get into the nose but in the mouth they'll be all around the mouth getting
20:22to the back of the throat and up to the nose very quickly so that's a reason for having a
20:28fizzy drink
20:28and the other reason for having champagne is champagne when it's made on the the lees the the the yeasts
20:37when the yeasts die they give off glutamic acid and glutamic acid is an amino acid that's huge amounts of
20:45umami in it okay and the good news is when you combine the umami in champagne with some of the
20:56umami rich ingredients in your food they'll boost each other right everything will taste a little bit
21:03better cheers cheers i feel like that one as well i feel like that if champagne's not on the menu
21:12there's
21:13another simple hack guaranteed to boost flavor one of the other things that you can do would be to add
21:21some soy sauce so if you have some little sachets of soy sauce that you could just sprinkle spread over
21:27the food again more umami packed flavor so having a little sachet of soy sauce would be more effective
21:35than having like little salt and pepper or something absolutely if you really want to embrace the senses
21:42you don't want to forget your nose because smells make up about 80 percent of what we perceive as taste
21:50there is another technique that we can use and it's it's a bit messier you're not smelling things
21:56because of the the low pressure but also the dryness of the air and you have to have the mucous
22:03membrane
22:03wet if you're going to smell things okay so you could always take um a nasal spray
22:10a saline nasal spray does this work taste more it does work it does work
22:17okay
22:22my airway feels so much more open yes that i can actually yes smell and taste everything much
22:29better time to put barry's tips to the test and see if i really can make the airplane food taste
22:36any
22:37better
22:41this is where it starts to get embarrassing
22:59so there you have it the cheap secret ingredients to a better in-flight meal earplugs soy
23:08sauce and a nasal spray don't forget to wash it all down with an umami packed drink like my tomato
23:16juice
23:18kombucha is another great option if you can't stretch to champagne
23:23coming up
23:25the secret to cheap flights
23:28because it's because it's a great way to to get a taste of another country
23:40book a long-haul holiday and you're investing serious money flying thousands of miles and counting
23:47down for months so getting it right matters
23:51you've done all the research price checked the deals requested your annual leave you're finally
23:57ready to book that holiday you've been saving for now all you need is the perfect hotel a nice big
24:05room
24:06great food a gorgeous pool and the kind of reviews that give you the confidence to click book
24:16my name's sarah martin i've spent probably 25 years plus working within the travel industry along retail
24:23travel agents
24:25with a wide range of experience sarah knows what matters to us when it comes to booking a holiday
24:33people don't like to park with their money and when they're spending an awful lot of money on a holiday
24:37i think having that option to be able to read people's reviews that are honest of where they've
24:44been and their experience it gives people that expectation of what they're walking into a review
24:49can really influence consumer behavior joe rhodes is a travel investigator for consumer champions which
24:57she's been holding companies to account for over eight years for say a hotel room you're much more
25:03likely to book if you read about other holiday makers really positive experiences in that hotel
25:10with almost half of us reading reviews before booking a holiday review 8.7
25:17it's safe to say they are important but there's a problem
25:24there are entire businesses companies that are based on submitting fake reviews to various review
25:32hosting platforms and we call these paid review farms i'm becky foley i'm the vice president of
25:39trust and safety at trip advisor i've been a trip advisor for over 10 years becky leads the team
25:46dedicated to user generated content and fraud prevention what these businesses do is they will
25:52contact hotel restaurant or tour operators and they will ask them hey if i am able to get 10
26:01positive reviews submitted to your business listing will you give me a hundred dollars and hotel owners
26:08or restaurant owners sometimes will engage in that because they are very incentivized to go up in
26:15the rating and ranking on trip advisor and it's bad news for those of us planning a far-flung getaway
26:23last year trip advisor found the worst locations for paid reviews were all long haul indonesia vietnam and
26:31the u.s and we got stung in our hotel in denaang so i had booked this read the reviews
26:39and i was like
26:39oh they all seem good booked it got there was in shock there's no way everyone is writing this hotel
26:47amazing because it's so bad and then on closer inspection i realized all the reviews were indeed fake
26:55so just how many fake reviews are out there last year trip advisor removed over 2.7 million fake
27:03reviews from our site just under 80 percent of them were removed before they were ever posted the other
27:0920 were removed after we identified a pattern and we were able to go back and make sure that we
27:16got all
27:17the fake reviews down that's only on trip advisor there's also yelp facebook google and so on in fact
27:2580 of online reviews are on google and the fake ones are getting harder to spot ai is making it
27:33more
27:34difficult in terms of fake reviews for one they're able to generate them at such volume and so much
27:41quicker than a human could but also the language is becoming more sophisticated so it's going to be
27:47much more difficult for the consumer to actually differentiate between a genuine and a fake review
27:53and a human and a robot voice lovely stay clean and cozy right in the heart of the city staff
28:02were helpful
28:03with tips on where to eat and what to see ideal base for exploring the city on foot would happily
28:09return
28:11sounds convincing doesn't it but this is an ai generated review i'd be fooled it's clear fake reviews
28:19are a problem so what's being done about them since april last year fake reviews have been illegal in
28:27the uk so my name's sarah gillespie i'm a freelance travel journalist for major uk publications and i've
28:34been writing about consumer travel for about five years sarah's got the lowdown on the law
28:41any company that is found to be hosting fake reviews on its site can face a fine of up to
28:4710 of its
28:48global turnover which is a huge amount so companies now have a huge incentive to to get rid of fake
28:55reviews that level of fine should be a significant deterrent so why are there still so many fake
29:02reviews ai is it's becoming more sophisticated so it's more difficult to distinguish it from say human
29:10voice the sheer volume of reviews that it will be able to generate it's going to be very difficult
29:17for any verification system to keep up with it so how can we at home beat the bots
29:25one thing you can do is when you are scrolling through them is clicking on sometimes you have
29:30a profile aligned with you as a reviewer and when you click through and there's no other reviews there
29:35there's no photo it does lead you to think is this person legit if you can see maybe they've left
29:4220
29:42reviews in an hour that's typically not going to be a legitimate review to spot a fake review you want
29:49to actually read the review first have a look at what's being said because a fake review will quite
29:54often be quite generic real reviews read left by real people will quite often include information that
30:00is completely useless they'll say stuff like oh we went for my wife's anniversary or for a 60th birthday
30:08none of that has any relevance to the review if you think you've found the perfect place check social
30:14media travelers will often show you their hotel room or food just make sure they're not sponsored posts or ads
30:25even for deal conscious travelers flights remain one of the biggest costs of a long-haul holiday
30:32a cost many of us have come to accept but change could be on the horizon
30:41from no-frill service to endless add-ons it's fair to say that low-cost airlines have completely changed
30:49the way we see travel but there's one low-cost concept that's never really taken off and that is long
30:57distance
30:59the whole evolution of the low-cost airline sector has been can we find markets that are about three
31:06hours long that's the sweet spot for making money full airplane turn it round another full airplane lots
31:13of revenue
31:17for anything longer than three hours you'd usually have to depend on a legacy airline one that offers a full
31:24service like british airways or emirates but advancements in airplane technology mean that
31:29traditional low-cost airplanes can now fly for longer last five to seven years has seen the introduction of
31:38these next generation aircraft so essentially it's the same aircraft it looks the same it has new engines
31:45that have more thrust and therefore allow the airline to operate that to longer sectors
31:53in the past you needed to fly on a big jet like a 787 or an a330 to get you
32:00to places like africa or
32:02asia but now a smaller more fuel efficient plane can get you there and that is just a game changer
32:10because
32:10a smaller plane is cheaper to run and that means low-cost airlines can get into the market
32:17it's conceivable for a narrow-bodied low-cost airline to operate from the united kingdom or ireland
32:25all the way to the east coast of the united states offering low-cost services
32:32never once to follow the trends low-cost airlines aren't just replicating typical routes
32:38they're identifying new ones we recently launched london gatwick to medina in saudi arabia
32:45and that's the first time there's been any connectivity between the uk and medina
32:50low-cost airlines are opening up new routes and new possibilities with budget flights already available
32:57from the uk to places like cape verde and egypt and in europe low-cost airlines can get you as
33:05far as the
33:05gambia but what if you want to go further you could get two low-cost flights and have a stopover
33:12holiday
33:13for free
33:18i've been doing some research and if i wanted to fly from london to dubai it would cost me about
33:24925
33:26pounds but if i chose to connect two budget flights and flew from london to istanbul with pegasus and then
33:35from istanbul to dubai with fly dubai it would only cost me 690 pounds that's more than 200 pounds cheaper
33:45if you really wanted to capitalize on those savings there are some destinations that will relax the
33:59rules for short stays one way that you can maximize a long-haul journey is to take advantage of some
34:06schemes offered by certain countries where you can stop over in a country without having to pay for a
34:13visa which can sometimes be quite expensive sarah's got the inside scoop on super stopovers
34:20a really savvy way to max out your adventure china has started offering stays of up to 10 days
34:28visa free for uk travelers in up to 60 destinations which includes beijing and shanghai
34:35so if you're flying to a country in east asia such as japan or korea you could break it up
34:41with a stay
34:42in china also chinese airlines do tend to be much cheaper so you can also take advantage of the cheaper
34:50chinese fares if china's not on your bucket list there are still plenty of other options
34:56so there are certain destinations that will do certain promotional activities where travelers
35:04leave the airport if they have a long stop over and have a look around the country and then take
35:10their ongoing flight sometimes even stay the night in some cases i would have a look and see if any
35:16destination that you're stopping over in uh will will let you do that because it's a great way to to
35:22get a taste of another country abu dhabi's stopover program allows etihad airways passengers with a
35:29layover of at least 24 hours to book up to two free nights in a premium hotel it also offers
35:36discounted
35:37hotel bookings for longer stays of up to six nights if you want to try connecting low budget flights
35:46websites like skyscanner and kayak are good places to start because they can show the cheapest
35:52routes with the connecting flights the only word of caution that i would give you need to know that
35:59if one leg of your trip gets cancelled or delayed neither airline is under any obligation to compensate
36:05you because you're not flying with the same airline so just keep that in mind make sure that you leave
36:11enough time for the changeover in between because you will also have to pick up your luggage
36:17so with some clever planning and the right insurance you can bring the cost of your long
36:22haul trip down and there's more
36:29for some of us flying somewhere exotic is what long haul is all about the sights and smells of
36:37india or the food of thailand are unique but for some destinations the views and the vibe can be
36:46replicated in a location that might be a lot cheaper to visit and when the average cost of one of
36:53these
36:54holidays for a family of four is five thousand pounds that's tempting i'm nicola i'm 27 and i'm from
37:02stevenage and i love holidays nicola has chosen the azores for her upcoming trip with husband josh
37:10it's often quoted as a duke for hawaii but can it really give the feel of a long haul holiday
37:16for a
37:17fraction of the price we picked the azores mostly because of the wildlife and the greenery um i love
37:23whales and we knew that it's a great place to go whale watching it's also a great place to go
37:30if you
37:30want the destination vibes without the price tag a flight to honolulu can set you back almost three
37:37grand but flights to ponta delgada are 95 cheaper at less than 150 pounds and being in the atlantic
37:47off the coast of portugal means the azores are just four hours away a lot closer to home
37:54if you can't stand a long flight and you can't find the budget to go for hawaii i think it's
38:00a
38:00great in between the scenery and the wildlife and everything is priceless right that has got to be
38:08some kind of new record check-in only opened eight minutes ago and we are already through security
38:15london heathrow offers direct flights to the azores or if you want to stop over take a budget flight from
38:22your closest airport to lisbon and another low-cost flight to ponta delgada we have just arrived in
38:29the azores and the flights are about three and a half hours in the end and it's crazy that somewhere
38:36that feels so far removed from the uk is only a three and a bit hour flight but does it
38:42live up to
38:43the height we're going out whale watching so so excited
38:55we just saw bird whales and a baby and now we're going on to look for some other species
39:01fingers crossed to see a bit more the deep sea canyons and nutrient-rich currents of the azores
39:07make it the perfect home for whales dolphins and other cetaceans with up to 28 different species
39:15recorded in its waters
39:19the north coast of the island and just look at the view it speaks for itself the volcanic nature of
39:27the
39:27islands combined with the temperate and humid atlantic climate is what helps create the stunning azores
39:34landscape not to mention the islands themselves are actually the top of huge mountains rising from
39:40the ocean floor so we have just had pancakes in the park and some local tea it came to about
39:4826 euros
39:49for the pair of us so really affordable the average cost of a three course meal for two in ponta
39:55delgada
39:55is 40 euros compared to 102 dollars in honolulu even with the exchange rate when it comes to eating
40:04out the azores is half the price of hawaii it is absolutely stunning and i can fully see exactly why
40:13everyone says it's a dupe from hawaii there's so much greenery the mountains it's absolutely beautiful
40:23with your plane fare taking up so much of the cost of a long-haul trip it's definitely worth thinking
40:30creatively about which airline you use or which destination you go to that way you can sit back
40:37relax and enjoy your well-earned break with a nice extra chunk of spending money
40:48coming up the latest trend to give your holiday a cinematic twist oh that was here
41:04there's a huge new trend that's transforming destinations across the world it's part of the
41:12new wave of tourism powered not by guidebooks but by screens have you ever wondered what it's like to
41:19cruise through the place where they filmed king kong many of us are choosing destinations inspired by
41:25our favorite films pp lane here we come tomorrow morning jack from belfast is in thailand where there
41:33are no shortage of blockbuster worthy beaches and it's absolutely amazing here it's been the location
41:41for films like bridget jones the edge of reason the beach and classic bond films the man with the golden
41:47gun
41:48and tomorrow never dies we made it james wonder island and it's amazing it's beautiful and the tour guide
41:57also told us that jurassic park has been shot here it's a trend so popular it's got its own name
42:04set
42:05jetting it's very early in the morning but there's loads of people already so i think it's going to be
42:12very busy today but the more famous a location is the busier it's likely to be so i would say
42:19if
42:20you're thinking about set jetting chances are you're going to have more fun the more obscure your tv show
42:26is because it's just something really niche you can do with family and friends and you know it's a great
42:32time you don't have to go too far for a set jetting experience there are plenty of hot spots all
42:39over
42:40europe movie fan john is in malta where surprisingly there are over 40 set jetting locations today
42:48we're in the ancient city of medina to do some game of thrones series one set jets john's visited
42:54over 170 locations across 20 different countries so here we are in a place where gladiator 2 was filmed
43:01where paul mescal runs up the steps to join the arena and here i go
43:08eric knacktreeb is behind a set jetters app connecting film locations to tourist boards
43:15producers and holiday makers how big is set jetting and film tourism it's been estimated to be in a 66
43:24billion dollar industry uh somewhere between 100 120 million people a year just visiting filming
43:31locations around the world any tips on how to choose a location to go set jetting one of the examples
43:38that you might think of is you know the high density of filming the area of new york that's expensive
43:43uh
43:43there are a lot of scenes but if you actually look at where most of the marvel films were shot
43:50you'd be in cleveland cleveland has a high density of filming locations it's a lot cheaper to travel
43:57to and experience than new york city the cost of filming in new york versus other big cities it means
44:03that some set jet destinations are actually closer than you think the street scenes for the latest
44:09spider-man movie brand new day had a surprising stand-in for new york glasgow and glasgow's also
44:16gotham city in dc films the batman and the flash and the location for indiana jones and the dial of
44:23destiny britain is home to many incredible set jetting locations and i've come to blenheim palace
44:33in oxfordshire to visit one myself
44:38from bridgerton oh that was here to napoleon and even harry potter blenheim palace has been featured
44:48in scores of films and tv shows over the years i met with head of operations emily spencer to learn
44:55about blenheim's set jetters we've definitely seen visitor numbers climbing over the last few years
45:02certainly after we have a large blockbuster film that comes out and it's connected to blenheim then
45:06we know we get inquiries and we know we get bookings off the back of that
45:11it's been dubbed the white lotus effect after both sicily and hawaii saw a 300 surge in tourism
45:18after the show and it's a hit with younger generations with a large percentage of gen z and
45:24millennials planning their trips based on film and tv locations do people ever come and try to sort of
45:32recreate a scene or take a picture in the spot where that character was definitely i think i've
45:38seen a little bit of sort of bollywood dancing in the middle of the great court a little bit of
45:41james
45:42bond action and and certainly we see people dressed up as bridgerton characters you've got people
45:46going around the palace and just suddenly you spot somebody going through in a bonnet and that makes our
45:50holiday as well stuck for inspiration for your next long haul holiday well take a look at your
45:59favorite movie or tv show and set jet go
