New drivers will face tougher regulations in Western Australia that will extend the probation period up to three years. It comes alongside a crackdown on drivers caught doing the wrong thing on new 'smart' traffic cameras, that give unprecedented views of the inside of vehicles.

00:18And drivers will be on green plates for two years, currently only required for 18 months.

01:07which restricts red pea plate drivers to just one passenger.
01:11Authorities also set to crack down on drivers caught doing the wrong thing by new high-tech traffic cameras,
01:17following an eight-month grace period where they only issued warnings.
01:21Those caught using their phones or not wearing seatbelts to face fines of up to $1,000 from October 8th,
01:27Mr Whitby denying the fines are unfair in a cost-of-living crisis.
01:31If you don't want to pay a speeding fine or an offence fine for using your phone, don't do it.
01:38A consultation period on the novice driver changes will last six weeks.
