00:00What if your phone could tap you on the shoulder and say,
00:02hey, someone's recording you with metaglasses right now.
00:04Well, there's a new privacy app that scans for devices like metaglasses and Snapchat spectacles.
00:10It's called Nearby Glasses, built by Scientologist turned developer Yves-Jean-Renaud,
00:14who says wearable tech is advancing faster than privacy protections.
00:17But here's the catch, if the app alerts you, it doesn't necessarily mean you're being recorded,
00:22it just means that those devices are nearby,
00:24so it could accidentally pick up a Meta VR headset if you're near one.
00:27Companies like Meta have already included a little LED to show when recording is active,
00:31but critics have said that that LED is way too easy to be tampered with.
00:34On top of that, researchers, including students at Harvard University,
00:38have shown how wearable tech can be modified to identify strangers using public data,
00:42aka they're scanning you like the Terminator.
00:45Now, the app isn't perfect.
00:46It can misidentify devices, and it can detect every camera.
00:50So this isn't just about one app, it's about a bigger question.
00:53As smart glasses and facial recognition become more common,
00:56what level of privacy should we expect in public?
