This is no longer just border tension. Pakistan has declared what it calls “open war” against Afghanistan’s Taliban government.

Airstrikes have hit Kabul. Bombs reportedly fell in Kandahar. Dozens are claimed dead on both sides. And now… both governments are accusing each other of massive casualties, captured soldiers, and even a downed fighter jet.

Here’s exactly what happened — and why this could become the most dangerous Afghanistan-Pakistan escalation in years.

The latest clash began when Afghan forces launched attacks across the border into Pakistan late Thursday night. Kabul says it was retaliation. Retaliation for Pakistani airstrikes earlier in the week that Afghanistan claims killed civilians, including women and children.

Islamabad says those earlier strikes targeted militants hiding near the border. Then came the dramatic shift.

00:19This is no longer just border tension.

00:29Airstrikes have hit Kabul.
00:31Bombs reportedly fell in Kandahar.
00:34Dozens are claimed dead on both sides.
00:36And now both governments are accusing each other of massive casualties,
00:41captured soldiers, and even a downed fighter jet.
00:44Here's exactly what happened and why this could become
00:48the most dangerous Afghanistan-Pakistan escalation in years.
00:52The latest clash began when Afghan forces launched attacks
00:56across the border into Pakistan late Thursday night.
00:59Kabul says it was retaliation.
01:02Retaliation for Pakistani airstrikes earlier in the week
01:06that Afghanistan claims killed civilians, including women and children.
01:11Islamabad says those earlier strikes targeted militants hiding near the border.
01:16Then came the dramatic shift.
01:18Pakistan's defense minister, Khawaja Asif, posted a blunt message on X.
01:23Our patience has reached its limit.
01:26Now it is open war between us and you.
01:30Within hours, Pakistan launched a military campaign named Operation Khazab-l-Huk.
01:36That marked a major escalation from border skirmishes to open confrontation.
01:41Explosions were reported in Kabul.
01:43Afghan officials say Pakistan also bombed Kandahar and Paktia province.
01:49Pakistan claims it targeted Afghan Taliban military infrastructure,
01:53including two brigade headquarters in Kabul,
01:56a corpse headquarters in Kandahar, ammunition depots and logistics bases.
02:01However, Pakistan did not release detailed casualty figures from those strikes.
02:06Meanwhile, Afghanistan paints a very different picture.
02:09Afghanistan's defense ministry claims its forces killed 55 Pakistani soldiers,
02:16destroyed 19 Pakistani army posts and captured several soldiers alive.
02:21Pakistan strongly denies this.
02:24Islamabad says only two of its soldiers were killed
02:27and claims over 100 Afghan fighters died instead.
02:31That's not just a small discrepancy.
02:34That's two completely different versions of reality.
02:37And there's more.
02:38Afghan sources say they shot down a Pakistani F-16 Fighting Falcon fighter jet.
02:44A video circulating online shows burning aircraft wreckage.
02:48If confirmed, this would be a major blow.
02:51Not just symbolically, but militarily.
02:54So far, Pakistan has not acknowledged losing any aircraft.
02:58Without independent verification, this claim remains disputed.
03:02But even the claim alone raises the stakes dramatically.
03:06At the Torkim border crossing, mortar shells reportedly struck a refugee camp.
03:11Women and children were wounded.
03:13Afghan officials say at least 13 civilians were injured.
03:17On the Pakistani side, residents are evacuating villages near the border.
03:21Thousands of Afghan refugees who had been waiting to cross are now caught in uncertainty.
03:27For months, tensions have been building.
03:30Pakistan accuses the Tariq-i Taliban Pakistan, or TTP, of operating from inside Afghanistan.
03:37The Afghan Taliban government denies it.
03:39Militant attacks inside Pakistan have surged in recent years.
03:44Islamabad says it cannot tolerate cross-border sanctuaries.
03:48Afghanistan says Pakistan is violating its sovereignty.
03:51A Qatar-mediated ceasefire had been holding, barely.
03:56Now it looks like it may be collapsing.
03:58Will this remain a limited but intense border conflict?
04:02Or are we witnessing the start of a prolonged military confrontation between two heavily armed neighbors?
04:09Airstrikes, border battles, competing casualty claims, a possible downed jet.
04:14This could reshape security dynamics across the entire region.
