00:00What would President Trump have to extract from the Iranians by way of concessions for him to be able to
00:07then step back from the military option?
00:10Well, President Trump, of course, pulled out of the JCPOA when he was elected the first time and made clear
00:17then and continues to make clear that Iran can never have a nuclear weapon.
00:21And the Iranians position has been that their nuclear program is for civilian purposes and that they have no intention.
00:29And the Iranian foreign minister repeated this yesterday.
00:32They have no intention of building a nuclear weapon.
00:35But all the intelligence is that what they are doing creates the building blocks for that.
00:40So it would have to be for Iran to give up some of its nuclear material, I think maybe all
00:48of it.
00:48It might have to submit to very intrusive inspections by the United States, not by the IAEA, which President Trump
00:57does not trust.
00:57So it would be a very heavy lift for Iran to go with that level of derogation of its sovereignty
01:07that would be required to satisfy President Trump.
01:09And I think that's been the key so far.
01:12Iran has not been willing to be as open as possible.
01:15But the regime is under a lot of pressure, not just from Iran, from the U.S. military, but also
01:20from the demonstrations in the streets, the continuing fallout from their killing of thousands of their own citizens.
01:27This is a country where many of the people who are demonstrating against the regime are calling on the United
01:32States to attack.
01:33There are people, there are students who are saying we want the United States to bomb the regime.
01:37So this is a complicated situation for the Iranian leaders to try and navigate.
