00:31Hello, everybody.
00:32Friday afternoon has arrived a very special weekend ahead,
00:36of course, for us, Eurovision nuts.
00:38All eyes are on Malmo, Sweden,
00:40for the 68th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest.
00:44Hello, Rachel Riley.
00:46Guten Tag, Colin Murray.
00:48Come on, now, you know that's not Swedish.
00:51No, but Eurovision, you've got to embrace everything.
00:53And can I say, Rachel, you look lovely.
00:56Corny joke, insert here.
01:00Thank you, Rachel, for the delay.
01:04I want to go back 50 years because that's when, in Brighton,
01:08Katie Boyle hosted many a Eurovision Song Contest,
01:11hosted in Brighton, and ABBA,
01:14although they'd released a record before,
01:16were announced to Europe and then the world with Waterloo.
01:19How convenient that Laureen won last year
01:21with the brilliant tattoo, by the way.
01:23And it's in Sweden, 50 years on.
01:25Unbelievable.
01:27So, of the 10 UK judges,
01:30how many of them do you think voted for ABBA and Waterloo,
01:35which is regarded 50 years later
01:36as the greatest Eurovision entry of all time?
01:38I'm guessing not very many, then.
01:40We didn't give anything, anything,
01:42to Waterloo by ABBA.
01:44Wow.
01:44Well, they managed to do all right without us.
01:46They did all right without the support.
01:48Right, well, listen,
01:48we have the perfect dictionary corner for this week,
01:50as you know,
01:51because joining our Suzy Den all week
01:53has been the brilliant Cheryl Baker.

02:08Multicoloured, wonderful, happiness and lovely.
02:10Yeah.
02:11I love it, Cheryl.

11:46There you go.
11:48Six points each.
11:49There's close Cheryl Baker.
11:52Beside.
11:53Busied.
11:54And you've got a weird one I've never heard of.
11:55Yeah, still just six, but a cuspid, which is a canine tooth.
11:59Yeah.
12:00Back to the numbers.
12:01Maddie, you're choosing for the first time, though, today,
12:03so let's find out what your tactics are as challenger.
12:05Can I have one big, please?
12:07Five small.
12:08You look like you were making that up on the spot.
12:10One big, five small to start.

12:14But these numbers are...
12:16One, two, eight, three, five, and 50.

13:18Next one. APPLAUSE
13:21Very close indeed as we chat.
13:23For the final time this week with Cheryl, on the eve of the Eurovision,
13:27it returns to Sweden.
13:29Sweden must be the joint biggest winners now, right?
13:34Yeah, with Ireland, seven each.
13:35Seven for Ireland, seven for Sweden, yeah.
13:38Do you have a favourite Eurovision entry of all time,
13:40other than box fizz making your mind up, obviously?
13:42I do like some of the old ones, being old myself.
13:46But I love Euphoria.
13:50So, Laureen, who did it with Tattoo last year,
13:53her first Eurovision with Euphoria, that's a phenomenal song.
13:58And Laureen, as you say, won it twice, two great songs.
14:01And that brings me to Johnny Logan, because he's the other double winner.
14:04And Hold Me Now would probably be my favourite song.
14:06Well, Johnny Logan gave us the trophy after he won the Eurovision in 1980
14:11with What's Another Year?
14:13Ah, so this year then.
14:15I won't ask you to make any bold predictions as such,
14:19but it is poetic, isn't it, that it's ended up back in Sweden,
14:23you know, 50 years on from ABBA.
14:24Yeah.
14:26I mean, some people suggested that it might have been planned that way,
14:29but Laureen had a great song, she had a fantastic performance,
14:32and Tattoo is a worthy winner, in my opinion.
14:35So, it's perfect that it's going back to Sweden.
14:40I wonder if ABBA will make an appearance.
14:42Won't that be fantastic?
14:44They've denied it, haven't they?
14:45Yes, but, you know...
14:46It's got to be abatastic one way or the other, whatever way it happens.
14:50Definitely, definitely.
14:51I can't wait.
14:52Would you want...
14:53Would you...
14:53I mean, all I'm going to say at this stage, you have to...
14:56You know, you have to do it on the night, right?
14:58Yeah.
14:59But I'm just going to say Baby Lasagna.
15:01For anyone that's not followed, I'm just going to say Baby Lasagna,
15:03and tomorrow night, people who tune in casually will go,
15:06oh, yeah, that's what that idiot was talking about.
15:08I think you need to hear Baby Lasagna a few times.
15:11Yeah.
15:12But I don't know, I don't know.
15:14There's a few runners and riders.
15:15Switzerland is up there, although I don't think it's that great.
15:18Croatia.
15:19Yeah.
15:21I mean, Oli Alexander, if he can pull it out of the bag,
15:24he can walk away with it.
15:26You never know.
15:27I don't think the song is strong enough,
15:28but the performance might be good enough.
15:31It just needs a bit of a lift in it, you know?
15:34Well, I love it.
15:34Roll on tomorrow night.
15:35You having a party?
15:36Of course.
15:37Why would I ask that?
15:38I just adore Eurovision so much, and I always have.
15:41Ever since Sandy Shaw won with Puppet on a String,
15:44I've been glued to the television ever since.
15:46And I can't wait for tomorrow.
15:48Same.
15:49Can't wait.
15:49Bring it on.
15:50Cheryl, wonderful.
15:55OK, well, our challenger Matty is in the lead
15:58after that numbers round.
15:59So, Janet, let's get back to those letters.
16:02I'll start with the consonant, please, Rachel.

17:00I love a vowel.
17:01I love a vowel.
17:02I love a vowel.
17:02I love a vowel.
17:03Janet?
17:04Seven.
17:05Seven?
17:05Matty?
17:07I'll go with the seven.
17:08Right.
17:09Everyone was thinking, do you take the risk of the eight?
17:11You both didn't.
17:12Janet?
17:13In jests.
17:14In jests.
17:15Wasn't expecting that.
17:16Matty?
17:16Teasing.
17:18Sevens all round.
17:19Was there an eight?
17:20Couldn't find an eight.
17:21There you go, brick wall.
17:22Q didn't help.
17:23Q didn't help.
17:24All right.
17:24It's as you were as we get more letters now from Matty.
17:27Can we have a constant, please?
17:29Thank you, Matt.

18:15MUSIC PLAYS

18:37A sword.
18:38Janet?
18:39Dosage.
18:40And dosage.
18:41Neck and neck again,
18:42Dixie Corner.
18:43There is a neck there.
18:44Straight from Spanish,
18:45it's a musical term,
18:47rasguedo,
18:48I'm probably pronouncing that
18:49very badly,
18:50R-A-S-G-E-A-D-O,
18:52and it's a rhythmically
18:54complex strumming of a guitar,
18:56such as you might find
18:57in flamenco music.
18:58Oh, my goodness.
18:59I give Rachel a point
19:00just for being able
19:00to spell it up there.
19:01That's brilliant.
19:04APPLAUSE
19:05And with that,
19:06let's get back to the numbers.
19:08Dirty look from Janet again,
19:09she doesn't like it.

20:30Well done.
20:30Big five points.
20:31Is that what about 677?
20:33Yeah,
20:34I thought it might be hard
20:34with so many evens,
20:36but if you say eight times four
20:38is 32.
20:39Take away five is 27.
20:42And then times that by 25
20:43for 675
20:45and add on the two.
20:46Six,
20:46seven,
20:46seven.
20:46Brilliant.
20:47Well done.
20:50And the reason why
20:51that's a big five points,
20:52Matty,
20:53is it puts you more
20:54than 10 points ahead.
20:5613,
20:56but wait,
20:57six rounds still to go.
20:58So let's hold that thought
20:59and get our tea time teaser.
21:01Apes thud.
21:02Apes thud.
21:03It's what you might have
21:05after a clean sweep.
21:06It's what you might have
21:07after a clean sweep.
21:24Hello again.
21:25It's what you might have
21:26after a clean sweep.
21:28Dust heap.
21:28Dust heap.
21:29Well,
21:30Janet has three wins so far.
21:31Going for a fourth win
21:32on her 79th birthday,

22:46That's it, Maddy?
22:47Seven.
22:48Seven, that's a big seven.
22:49Janet?
22:50I'm going to try a seven.
22:51OK.
22:52Both written down?
22:53Yeah.
22:54Maddy?
22:55Spatial.
22:56Spatial.
22:57What have you got there, Janet?
22:58A social.
22:59A social.
23:01Well, I'd like your logic to a social, but let's find out.
23:05Yeah, a social, absolutely fine.
23:07So, not quite unsocial, sort of, if you're a social,
23:10social, sort of, just without company.
23:13Spatial, you can spell it with a C.
23:15I just checked on that, normally with a T,
23:17but absolutely fine in this case, too.
23:18Seven points each.
23:19Cheryl?
23:20No, didn't do any better.
23:22There you go.
23:23Great.
23:23Let's just get on with it.
23:24And Janet, you know what to do.
23:26Constantly, Rachel.
23:28Thank you, Janet.
23:28V.
23:30And another.

23:34H.
23:35And another, please.
23:38T.
23:39And another.
23:41M.
23:45Vowel, please.
23:47E.
23:48And another vowel.
23:50A.
23:52And another vowel, please.
23:55E.
23:57Consonant, please.
23:58And lastly, K.
24:00And kindine.
24:29And another vowel, please.
24:31Janet? Oh, five. Five there. Matty? Six. A six, a big six. What's the five, Janet? Avert. Avert is there.
24:40Avert your ears from this. Matty? Heater. Heater. Well done. Well done. Nice six. Nice six. 19 points, the difference
24:49now. Still close enough for four rounds left. How do we get on there? Cheryl Baker? Nice little furry meerkat.
24:56Aw, little meerkat. Love it. Yeah. You could be a seven, yeah.
25:00Nice for seven. Meerkat it is. All right, let's pause with four rounds to go and let's get our final
25:08origins of words of this week. Denticles? Well, yesterday I was talking about being shirty and I mentioned the expression,
25:15throw your hat in the ring. So, again, in traditional fist fighting, if you were up for a fight and
25:20you'd been challenged, perhaps you would throw your hat into a circle of people and signal that you were willing
25:26to take on the fight and the challenge.
25:28So, I thought I would talk about other idioms. It made me think about the drop of a hat. Now,
25:35that isn't to do with boxing or fist fighting or anything, but actually to do with horse racing.
25:41So, I thought I would talk about some of the idioms, some of the many idioms and expressions that we
25:46get from horse racing.
25:48So, a pretty obvious example is horses for courses. So, you need to match a horse to the track to
25:54which it's suited.
25:55So, that one's fairly obvious. And, of course, you also have the fast track too, which looks back to horse
26:01racing.
26:02Now, today's races begin from starting boxes quite often, but early courses were a little bit less sophisticated and a
26:08scratch would be made on the ground, on the turf to indicate the starting line.
26:13So, when a horse was up to scratch, it was ready to run. Now, there are other sports that had
26:19a scratch line as well.
26:20So, famously, in boxing, for example, in early boxing rings, you would have a scratch and when a fighter was
26:27knocked down, he was given a 30-second count and then had to make his way to the scratch if
26:32the fight was to go on.
26:33So, pretty similar to today, I guess. If he couldn't do it, he was not up to scratch, etc.
26:39But, I mentioned at the drop of the hat, that's definitely from horse racing. So, the race was often started
26:43by holding up something, easily seen, and then dropping it.
26:46So, often a hanky, but also a hat.
26:51Well, this isn't over as a contest by any stretch of the imagination.
26:5719 points in it, with the 10 points of the conundrum at the end.
27:01So, let's see what happens. Four rounds to go. Matty Fraser, let's see if you can hold your nerve, my
27:05friend.
27:06Can I have a consonant, please?
27:07Thank you, Matty.
27:09S.
27:10And a second.
27:12T.
27:13And a vowel, please.
27:15A.
27:16Another vowel.
27:18O.
27:19A consonant, please.
27:21M.
27:23Consonant.
27:24T.
27:27Vowel, please.
27:28I.
27:29Another vowel, please.
27:32E.
27:33And a final vowel, please.
27:35And a final I.
27:38Let's play.
28:10I'm going to go for a seven.
28:12Going to go for it. Janet? Seven.
28:14Seven as well. What are you going for?
28:16You could have toasty with the I-E.
28:18Toasty with I-E.
28:20Janet?
28:22Atomise.
28:22OK. So, atomise, toasty, big moment.
28:26Yes, both absolutely fine.
28:28Yep, have a cheese toasty, you would spell it that way.
28:30There you go. That's a risk. Well done.
28:34APPLAUSE
28:36Is that it?
28:37Or can you add anything?
28:38No, no, no, we can add one. That's to imitate or imitates.
28:42Oh, so you get it with the S in the end.
28:44T's. There you go. Imitates.
28:47For eight, seven points each.
28:50Janet, last letters round in your choosing.
28:53Start with the consonant, please.
28:55Thank you, Janet.

30:01I can't spell. One, two, three, four, five, six.
30:04Beware when she counts, Maddie. How many for you?
30:06Just a five, I'm afraid.
30:08Oh, don't worry. What's the five?
30:10Straw. Straw. What have you got as a six?
30:12Bruts.
30:14Spell it for us.

30:28Six points for you. It's not a done deal yet.
30:32Right, dictionary corner.
30:33We just had one of the six. Airbus.
30:36Airbus, yeah. Nice.
30:3813 points in it. Matty, last numbers round.
30:41If you match, Janet, you'll be our new champion in your choosing.
30:43Can we just have one big, please?
30:45But you want something as easy as possible, Janet.
30:48You want something as hard as possible.
30:50The final numbers of the week.
30:53One, five, five, six.
30:58Three and the large one, 75.
31:00And the target, 742.

32:09I'll let you judge that for yourself at home.
32:11LAUGHTER
32:13Right, fingers on the buzzers. We're not done yet.
32:15Come on, Janet, I need one more shift from you.
32:17Let's get your finger on that buzzer.
32:20As we reveal our final countdown conundrum of the week.
32:23Here we go.
32:24MUSIC PLAYS
32:54And that's time.
32:55It must be difficult if Janet didn't get it.

33:04What is it?
33:05Well, I think Janet's finally hit it now.
33:07She's 79. Adulthood.
