00:00The government today denounced a university student for stepping on a Quran and uploading
00:05a picture of the act on social media. In a statement, government spokesman Fahmi Fahdil
00:10said insulting Islam was not only rude but also insensitive, adding that any action that touches
00:15on religious sensitivities and threatens public order is completely unacceptable.
00:21Fahmi, the communications minister, said he had ordered the Malaysian Communications and
00:26Multimedia Commission to investigate the matter and take immediate action, adding that the commission
00:30and police will not compromise. Earlier today, police arrested a University Malaysia Pahang
00:37Al-Sultan Abdullah student in Kwantan, suspected of insulting Islam on social media after a photograph
00:43allegedly showing his foot on a Quran went viral yesterday. The student has since apologized for
00:50his actions. Higher Education Minister Zambri Abdul Qadir meanwhile called for calm,
00:55saying the police had taken action and that steps would be taken to ensure
00:59that the controversy is not exploited by certain quarters, which he said could further complicate
01:04matters. Religious Affairs Minister Zulkif Ali Hassan said the student's actions had hurt the feelings
01:10of Muslims who are currently observing Ramadan and also urged all parties to maintain harmony.
