00:00In investigating the nature and prevalence of anti-Semitism in Australia,
00:05the Commission will apply the IRA working definition.
00:10The definition itself is uncontroversial.
00:14It provides
00:15Anti-Semitism is a certain perception of Jews,
00:21which may be expressed as a hatred towards Jews.
00:25Rhetorical and physical manifestations of anti-Semitism
00:29are directed toward Jewish or non-Jewish individuals
00:33and or their property,
00:36toward Jewish community institutions and religious facilities.
00:42The definition is accompanied by 11 examples of conduct
00:48which could amount to anti-Semitism.
00:51At least two of the examples are controversial
00:55and have led some critics to argue
00:58that the IRA working definition
01:01wrongly labels as anti-Semitic
01:05the expression of political views
01:08which do not reflect a hatred of Jews.
