00:03When I got into the service, my first location, you know, that I got stationed at was in England.
00:10So in these early hip-hop days, between 82 and 84, DJs, Africa, Bambada, Grandmaster Flash,
00:20Africa Islam, breakdancing groups, Rocksteady Crew, they would all come to London to do exhibitions.
00:28So in those early days, there was no videos, there was no MTV, there was nothing.
00:34So, you know, if you're from outside of New York, you know, I was one of those non-believers.
00:39I can't believe nobody spin it on their head and spin it on their back and this and that and
00:44all.
00:44This is all before the Breaking movie came out.
00:47So unless you was from that area, you had never seen that before.
00:51So I just went to the exhibition just to prove the situation wrong.
00:56I just thought it was, you know, they was BSing about it.
00:59So when I actually seen the people spin it on their head and this and that, and they had a
01:04DJ with them, you know,
01:06who was on Africa Islam, which is actually Ice-T's DJ at the time, you know, in the 80s he
01:14was.
01:16You know, and also, you couldn't see DJs scratching back there.
01:20Like I said, there was no videos to see.
01:22So the stuff that you're hearing on some of the records, you don't know how it's being done.
01:26So when I actually seen him, you know, with one hand on the record, another hand on the fader doing
01:32what he was doing,
01:33I said, oh, so that's how I go.
01:36My next military paycheck, I would have got me two turntables, you know, two ratchet turntables to start practicing up
01:43in the barracks.
01:44So I got honed all my skills as I was hearing stuff from these underground hip-hop records to hone
01:51my skills to become, you know, the guy, Mr. Mix.
01:55And then my next location, when I got to California, is where I met Fresh Kid Ice, the Chinaman.
02:01I was working in the chow line, and he was working in outpatient records in the hospital.
02:08He came through the chow line, said, man, I hear you got turntables in your room.
02:13Yeah.
02:14He came through the chow line, said, man, I hear you got turntables in your room.
02:17I hear you got turntables in your room.
02:17I hear turntables in your room.
