00:00The European Union has failed to adopt its 20th sanctions package against Russia,
00:05following a veto by Hungary.
00:07The latest package was set to ban shipping services for Russian crude oil.
00:14Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban announced the veto on X,
00:18saying Budapest would not stand by while the Druzeba oil pipeline remains shut down.
00:23He accused Ukraine of open political blackmail, saying Kiev was deliberately blocking supplies of Russian oil.
00:32Last week, the country's foreign minister added that Hungary would also block a €90 billion credit to Ukraine
00:39until pipeline deliveries resumed.
00:42Despite Hungary's objection, EU foreign policy chief Kaya Kalas suggested
00:47frozen Russian assets could provide an alternative source of funding.
00:51She added that she also decided to cap the size of the Russian mission in the EU at 40 people.
00:59The 27-nation bloc has already imposed 19 rounds of sanctions on Moscow over its invasion of Ukraine,
01:06making the latest veto a setback for European efforts to pressure Russia economically.
