01:21It was a very, very tense period.
01:24We were completely jacked up on adrenaline.
01:27From flash to bang,
01:29it was a question of hours.
01:31It was one of those once-in-a-lifetime experiences.
01:37Flashes of what happens
01:39Still haunt us all
01:41Failure was not an option
02:01It was a fascinating story
02:03Because it was a two kilo deal
02:05In New York City
02:05That led to the identification
02:07Of this massive Colombian organization
02:12In the DEA
02:13We don't go after users of drugs
02:15We don't go after distributors of drugs
02:17We go after the network
02:19And John Barry had that mentality
02:25I was a New York City detective
02:27Assigned to the Manhattan North
02:28Narcotics major case unit
02:34Back in the day
02:35In this area
02:35A lot of cocaine
02:38In the early 2000s
02:40Washington Heights
02:41Was a very busy drug area
02:46The further north you went
02:48The more stash houses
02:50These guys would use
02:51They tried to get to a more quieter area
02:53To put their stash houses
02:54So they don't get robbed
03:01My specialty in the early 2000s
03:04Was wiretaps
03:04And confidential informants
03:09We had information
03:11That this guy
03:12Was a major trafficker
03:13He had connections
03:15Outside the New York area
03:17Can we call him by name
03:18Can we call him Eduardo
03:19How do you want to refer to this
03:21Yeah we could call him Eduardo
03:22He's fine yeah
03:25Got a court authorized wiretap
03:27On his phone
03:29We then began listening to his phone
03:32We learned that Eduardo
03:33Had a shipment of cocaine
03:34That had just arrived
03:35He was sitting on an apartment
03:37In Washington Heights
03:38There was nothing that stood out
03:40About the conversation
03:41Just other than him detailing
03:42That the buyer was to come
03:44To the second floor
03:45Of the building
03:47We set up surveillance
03:49At that location
03:49And we waited for the customer
03:51To come and pick up
03:52Those two kilos
03:56So the buyer was parked
03:57Right over here
03:58Where this black car is
04:01Parked his car
04:02He exited his car
04:03He walked over here
04:05Up the sidewalk
04:05And into the building
04:11He was there a short time
04:13And then he exited the building
04:15Carrying a bag
04:16Came back the same direction
04:18Back into his car
04:20Which I was across the street
04:22Observing all this stuff
04:23I was calling it out
04:24To the field team
04:24What I was seeing
04:32We orchestrated a car stop
04:34At that vehicle
04:35Where we recovered
04:36Two kilos of cocaine
04:37And arrested the driver
04:38This type of operation
04:40This type of operation
04:40Was an everyday operation
04:42That we did as part
04:43Of a major case team
04:47So initially
04:48We believed
04:49There was just
04:50Any other arrest
04:51For the day
04:51John Barry
04:53He understood
04:54That street deals
04:56If focused
04:57And investigated properly
04:58Can lead to the highest level
05:01Of the organization
05:05Eduardo was a tough cookie
05:06It was difficult
05:10It took some time
05:11To get him to come around
05:12And tell us everything
05:16We finally built a rapport
05:17With him
05:17Where he trusted us
05:18And he gave us
05:20All that information
05:21And basically
05:22Spilled his guts
05:25So Eduardo's mother
05:26Was Dominican
05:27His father was German
05:28Late 60s
05:30Early 70s
05:30He came to the US
05:31And he joined the army
05:34He was in Vietnam
05:35In the US military
05:37He was a pilot
05:38And this particular guy
05:40Went up flying loads
05:41For big Colombian kingpins
05:43Pablo Escobar
05:44And others
05:46We were interested
05:47In who was
05:47The big people in Colombia
05:49That were bringing
05:50The drugs into the US
05:52He mentioned
05:53A person named
05:54Don Berner
05:57I had no idea
05:58Who Don Berner was
05:59I never heard of him before
06:02But he told me
06:03That he was
06:04A very significant
06:05Trafficker in Colombia
06:07And was part of the reason
06:09That Pablo Escobar
06:10Was killed
06:16Eduardo's story
06:16Seemed a little far-fetched
06:18From a guy
06:19That I arrested
06:20On a two-kilo deal
06:21In Washington Heights
06:23But the more
06:24I talked to him
06:25We figured out
06:26That his story
06:27Was true
06:29I immediately
06:30Went back
06:30To the DEA office
06:32And started
06:34To do research
06:34Because he didn't
06:35Know his real name
06:36But I quickly learned
06:39Diego Fernando
06:40Murillo Bajarano
06:41Was Don Berner
06:46Of course
06:47Most people
06:48Never heard of
06:48Don Berner
06:49Because for many years
06:51Don Berner
06:52Wasn't invisible
06:56He was your traditional
06:58Transnational
07:00Organized crime boss
07:02Tremendous power
07:04Tremendous influence
07:06Very, very difficult
07:07To get near
07:09Very difficult
07:10To infiltrate
07:13He had the Colombian government
07:14Protecting him
07:15The United States
07:16No matter how much
07:17We asked
07:17We couldn't get anywhere
07:19He was completely
07:21Untouchable
07:23John Barry
07:24Was like a pit bull
07:25He told me early on
07:27That he was going to get
07:28An indictment
07:29On Don Berner
07:30And he always delivered
07:32He was one of the best
07:34Investigators
07:34That I've ever worked
07:35With
07:37I was in shock
07:38That I took a guy
07:39From the streets
07:40Of Washington Heights
07:41Who gave me information
07:42On a kingpin
07:43Like Don Berner
07:44In Columbia
07:46He was a huge fish
07:48One of the worst
07:49Of the worst
07:50That's ever been
07:51On DEA's radar
07:54And water
07:55Will turn me on
07:55To Don Berner
07:56And once I latch on
07:58I don't let go
08:07Medellin is deceptively
08:08Beautiful
08:09It really is
08:11The land of eternal spring
08:19Tragically bubbling
08:20Under that
08:20Relatively serene surface
08:22Is an incredibly
08:24Violent
08:24Terrorist
08:26And narco-trafficking
08:27Movement
08:39Don Berner
08:40He wasn't from Medellin
08:42He was from Tuluwa
08:43On the other side
08:44Of the country
08:44By the Pacific coast
08:45But he comes here
08:46And started working
08:48The lowest rung
08:50In the drug business
08:51For an important element
08:53In the Medellin cartel
08:55Known as the Galliano clan
08:57Led by Fernando Galliano
09:00Don Berner
09:02Attracted the attention
09:04Of his boss
09:06When a guerrilla group
09:08Tried to extort
09:09From him
09:10And there was a fight
09:16Berner in a shootout
09:18Took up to 17 bullets
09:20And lost his leg
09:22He also lost partial
09:24Movement in his face
09:25And the reason
09:27That you always see him
09:28In all his pictures
09:29With that towel
09:29On his shoulder
09:30Is because he drools
09:31So he has to
09:32Constantly wipe his mouth
09:35There's a famous story
09:37That even after him
09:38Being shot
09:39He got off with
09:40Guns blazing
09:43And killed the guys
09:44That shot him
09:50It was one of the
09:52Incidents that
09:53Made him who he is
09:55And how he rose to power
09:57And why people feared him
09:59His reward
10:00Was to be made
10:01Head of security
10:02For the Galliano clan
10:04Suddenly he became
10:05A significant player
10:07In the Medellin cartel
10:20Pablo Escobar
10:21Believed that
10:22Certain drug traffickers
10:23In the Medellin cartel
10:25Were not paying him
10:26His dues
10:28Don Berner's boss
10:30Fernando Galliano
10:31Was summoned
10:32To the prison
10:33And killed
10:35In the prison
10:38And this detonated
10:40A civil war
10:41Within the Medellin cartel
10:44And Don Berner
10:46Was the key element
10:47In that civil war
10:55By this point
10:57Everybody wanted Escobar dead
10:59And no one really cared
11:01How that was achieved
11:03And so the Pepes were formed
11:05People persecuted by Pablo Escobar
11:08And this became a vigilante group
11:11Dedicated to bringing down Escobar
11:14And as soon as he left
11:16The cathedral
11:16And as soon as he left the cathedral
11:17He fled the prison
11:17They were all over him
11:23Don Berner became the heart
11:25The key element
11:26In the Pepes
11:28That then took on
11:29Pablo Escobar
11:32Pablo Escobar
11:34Targeted well known politicians
11:36Blew up police stations
11:38Blew up apartments
11:39Blew up social clubs
11:41Frequented by Columbia's elite
12:03Don Berner
12:05Turned Pablo Escobar's
12:07Tactics against him
12:12The Pepes began to hit
12:14His support structure
12:16They hit his lawyers
12:17They hit his accountants
12:19They hit his friends
12:21And on the day he was killed
12:24He had just one bodyguard with him
12:32There are many different theories
12:34As to how Pablo Escobar
12:37Was killed and by who
12:40Don Berner's version
12:42Is the Pepes were there first
12:44And it was his brother
12:46Alias Semidia
12:47Who actually shot Escobar
12:50As he ran across the roof
13:02Don Berner was the guy
13:04That sought to collect up
13:05All the different elements
13:07Of the Medellin cartel
13:09And keep them together
13:12He was able to create
13:14Extraordinarily sophisticated
13:16Criminal syndicate
13:18And an innovative one
13:21He learned from Escobar's mistakes
13:25He learned from Escobar's mistakes
13:25The first was
13:26Don't be visible
13:28Live in the shadows
13:31The second
13:32Do not take on the state
13:34Don't attract attention
13:38Don Berner realized
13:40That he's not a particularly
13:41Charismatic person
13:42But he could use that lack of charisma
13:45To remain anonymous
13:47And he used bribes
13:50Much more often
13:51Than he used bullets
13:54And he attempted
13:56To use violence
13:57In a much more selective
13:59Surgical way
14:00Than Pablo Escobar did
14:03He had powerful friends
14:05In the police
14:06And in the political world
14:07Who were prepared
14:09To support him
14:10Against other criminal elements
14:12So this helps him
14:13To cement his power
14:17The amount of drugs
14:19That he was responsible
14:20For moving
14:21We are speaking of
14:23Tens of thousands
14:25Of kilograms
14:26A month
14:27Not a year
14:29A month
14:31The numbers
14:33That he ultimately
14:34Had oversight of
14:36Was staggering
14:49In 2002
14:51DEA put him on
14:52The CPOT list
14:53Which identified him
14:55As one of the largest
14:56Traffickers in the world
14:58And they also put him
14:59On the OFAC list
15:00Which means he couldn't
15:02Conduct any financial
15:03Transactions through the world
15:04Anything in his name
15:06So he's at the top
15:08Of that target list
15:09He's a designated
15:11Foreign terrorist
15:12A major
15:14Significant
15:15Narcotics trafficker
15:16And then
15:17He's designated
15:19By treasurer
15:19As a kingpin
15:20That's the trifecta
15:21It doesn't get any bigger
15:23It don't get any
15:24Badder than that
15:27Don Berner came up
15:29From the bottom
15:29He was untouchable
15:31For many many many years
15:33There was no question
15:34In my mind
15:35Don Berner
15:36Was the biggest target
15:38In Colombia
15:40And I wanted to
15:41Make that case
15:42That was going to
15:43Bring him down
15:53Colombia's been in the grip
15:55Of a civil conflict
15:56For the last 50 years
15:59We've got
16:00The left-wing guerrillas
16:01Right-wing paramilitaries
16:04But they've all been fed
16:06By drug trafficking
16:07And cocaine
16:08Has been the fuel
16:10On the fire
16:13I don't know
16:14What this paramilitary
16:15Stuff means
16:15I guess at first
16:17They had a certain ideology
16:18But that fell apart
16:20When they realized
16:21How much money
16:22They can make
16:22From the drug business
16:34Don Berner
16:35Is by no stretch
16:36Of the imagination
16:37An ideologue
16:38He was a practical person
16:40Very pragmatic
16:42So his creating
16:43The AUC
16:44Was more of a
16:45Practical consideration
16:47In order to
16:48Consolidate power
16:49And control
16:50Over the narco-trafficking
16:52Trade in Colombia
16:53Not because he had
16:55Some fervent belief
16:56In right-wing
16:57Political ideology
17:01Under Don Berner
17:03The AUC
17:04Was out there
17:05Committing massacres
17:09Literally
17:10Crimes against humanity
17:12It is hard
17:14To get your head around
17:15How much destruction
17:17And violence
17:18And mayhem
17:19This guy has caused
17:25These guys were all
17:26Traffickers
17:27They just hid behind
17:28That AUC
17:29To protect themselves
17:30From the government
17:33The AUC
17:34Controlled
17:34Every route
17:35That went to the coast
17:36And any drug trafficker
17:38That wanted to move
17:39Cocaine
17:40Through that zone
17:41Had to pay a tax
17:42And there was no way
17:44To get it out of Colombia
17:45Without going through
17:46One of their blocks
17:46They had a staggering
17:49Percentage
17:50Of the entire
17:51Colombian production
17:52And staggering
17:54Percentage
17:54Of the amount
17:55Of cocaine
17:55That flowed
17:56To the United States
17:58Colombia was
17:59At the risk
18:00Of becoming
18:00A narco-state
18:01It was a very
18:03Very dicey
18:04Situation
18:08Drugs attack
18:08Everything
18:10That is the best
18:10About this country
18:13And I intend
18:14To do something
18:14About them
18:15We're putting
18:16The fight
18:16Against drugs
18:18In the center
18:20Of our national agenda
18:32The justice and peace
18:34Law of Colombia
18:36Was created
18:37In order to convince
18:39The members
18:41Of the AUC
18:42To come in
18:43Out of the jungle
18:44To lay down
18:45Their arms
18:46To turn themselves in
18:48And to reenter
18:49Colombian society
18:53President Uribe
18:54Gave his word
18:56That if
18:57The AUC
18:58Members
18:59Did not commit
18:59Any more
19:00Acts of crime
19:01They would serve out
19:03Their relatively
19:04Short sentences
19:05In Colombia
19:05And not be extradited
19:07To the United States
19:11Tom Berner
19:13Made a mistake
19:14He came out
19:15Of the shadows
19:23As part of the
19:25Paramilitary peace
19:26Process
19:26He suddenly
19:27Became visible
19:31From that moment
19:32Things began
19:34To go wrong
19:35For Berner
19:38The AUC
19:40Enters peace
19:41Talks
19:41With the government
19:43It's a long
19:44Drawn out
19:44Peace process
19:45From 2003
19:46To 2006
19:49Don Berner
19:50Was one
19:51Of the promoters
19:52Of the peace
19:52Process
19:53With the government
19:53And indeed
19:54The first
19:55Paramilitary unit
19:56That demobilized
19:57Was one of
19:58Don Berner's
19:59Why did he do this?
20:01He obviously
20:02Felt that he
20:03Was going to get
20:03The golden parachute
20:07The golden parachute
20:09That the paramilitaries
20:10Were looking for
20:11Was one
20:12No jail time
20:13Two
20:14No extradition
20:15And three
20:16Can we keep
20:16Some of our money?
20:25There's only
20:26Four things
20:27You had to do
20:28In order to get
20:29All the entitlements
20:31That the justice
20:32And peace offered
20:33You had to
20:34Voluntarily lay down
20:35Your weapons
20:35You had to
20:36Admit to your
20:37Wrongdoings
20:38You had to
20:38Make reparations
20:39To the victims
20:40Give back
20:41The property
20:42And ultimately
20:43You had to
20:44Stop being engaged
20:46In criminal activity
20:47You do those
20:49Four things
20:49And you will
20:51Serve no more
20:52Than eight years
20:53In prison
20:54No matter
20:54What you did
20:55And then you'll
20:57Live happily
20:57Ever after
20:58All you had to do
20:59The ultimate
21:00Sweetheart deal
21:01Right?
21:05They were not
21:06Forced to spend
21:06Time in prison
21:07They were forced
21:08To spend time
21:09In fairly lax
21:10Essentially work
21:12Camps of sorts
21:13Spread throughout
21:14Columbia
21:16The demobilization
21:17Of the AUC
21:18To me
21:19Is just a big joke
21:20Bottom line
21:21Is he went
21:21To some prison
21:22Which was really
21:23Not a prison
21:26He got to hang out
21:27With the beautiful
21:27Women
21:28And he got the drinks
21:29And he had his phones
21:30He had his communications
21:31He continued to do
21:32His business
21:32But he was in prison
21:34In Columbia
21:36It is the ultimate deal
21:37And guess what
21:40Don Berner
21:41And his brethren
21:42They literally
21:43Couldn't stop
21:44Being criminals
21:46They've been
21:47Terrorists
21:48And they've been
21:48Drug traffickers
21:49So long in their life
21:50That when they
21:52Have a good deal
21:53All they're thinking
21:54Is how can they
21:54Game the system
21:55They basically
21:57Demobilized
21:59A percentage
22:00Of their membership
22:01And they left
22:02Their best drug traffickers
22:04And their best fighters
22:05Out in the field
22:06To continue operating
22:10Don Berner
22:12In particular
22:13Continued
22:14Massive narco-trafficking
22:15From his relatively
22:17Serene camp
22:19He was able to
22:20Maintain operational control
22:22And as he had done
22:23His entire career
22:24He operated
22:26In the shadows
22:34In October of 2003
22:39Was the initial indictment
22:41On Don Berner
22:44Once the peace and justice
22:46Was signed in 2005
22:47I thought the likelihood
22:50Of us getting him
22:51Was diminished greatly
22:54But at that point
22:54I did take a step back
22:56And think about it
22:57And say to myself
22:58These guys can't
23:00Stay out of trouble
23:00And it was only
23:02A matter of time
23:03Before they'd slip up
23:10Don Berner
23:11Self-surrendered
23:12And it was all about
23:14Maintaining that sweetheart deal
23:16And maintaining reins
23:18On his empire
23:23And what does he do
23:24While he's in captivity
23:27He ordered the murder
23:29Of a politician
23:31The politician's wife
23:33And their driver
23:37It was a turning point
23:38And the Colombian government
23:40Started to turn up the heat
23:42And he felt it
23:44And he felt it
23:45And that's what had him
23:47Removed into a real prison
23:51The rest of the paramilitary leaders
23:53Went into prison
23:54Soon afterwards
23:55But this is where we see
23:57Don Berner's power
23:59Beginning to diminish
24:05President Uribe
24:06Was now under
24:07Considerable political pressure
24:09To extradite
24:11Don Berner
24:12And the rest of the
24:13AUC leadership
24:14To the United States
24:15To face justice there
24:18In the DEA
24:19And in the U.S. Attorney's Office
24:21We believe
24:22Very strongly
24:23In extradition
24:24We believe
24:24In the rule of law
24:25And we believe
24:26In developing evidence
24:27Against these kingpins
24:28And we want them
24:29To face justice
24:30In America
24:33The members of the AUC
24:35Like Pablo Escobar
24:37Decades before
24:37Understood that
24:38If they were extradited
24:40Tried
24:41Convicted
24:43Sentenced
24:43And incarcerated
24:44In the United States
24:46For their crimes
24:47That was
24:48End of the game
24:49For them
24:51They can't corrupt
24:52The officials
24:53They can't get the girls
24:54They can't get the booze
24:55They can't run
24:57Their business
24:58So they don't want
24:59To come to America
25:00Many of them
25:01Are dead serious
25:02When they say
25:03Better a grave
25:05In Colombia
25:05Than a jail cell
25:07In the United States
25:18Things began to change
25:20In 2007
25:22When other traffickers
25:24Wanted to come in
25:25And surrender
25:26To the United States
25:29We brought one of those
25:30Witnesses in
25:31Who had a wealth
25:32Of information
25:33On Don Berner
25:36Really turned up
25:37The heat
25:38Because now we can
25:39Start to send leads
25:40And information
25:41Down to Colombia
25:42That they didn't
25:43Even know about
25:43There was overwhelming proof
25:46That was
25:47Tained by DEA
25:49And shared with
25:49The Colombian government
25:50Of the AUC leaders
25:53Reconstituting themselves
25:55And retooling themselves
25:57Into a formidable
25:58Transnational criminal network
26:00From behind bars
26:01In prison
26:04This new organization
26:06Was going to be
26:06As violent
26:07And as dangerous
26:08And cause as much mayhem
26:10As the former AUC
26:12And the AUC leaders
26:14Were controlling that
26:15From prison
26:16They were directing it
26:18They were devising it
26:19They were scheming about it
26:21You've now created
26:22A new generation
26:23Of criminals
26:24That are the next level
26:27It was the ultimate betrayal
26:30By the AUC
26:36I met with President
26:37Alvaro Uribe
26:38On almost a weekly basis
26:40And he became
26:42Increasingly frustrated
26:45I think the president
26:47Of Colombia
26:47Finally got fed up
26:48With these guys
26:49Embarrassing him
26:50They continued
26:51To traffic drugs
26:52People were killed
26:54And I think he just
26:56Finally said
26:57Enough is enough
26:59The president
27:00In one fell swoop
27:01Signed extradition orders
27:03Of 14 of the highest ranking
27:06AUC members
27:07That had continued
27:07To engage
27:08In criminal activity
27:13My first thought would be
27:15No, no they're not
27:17This couldn't really
27:18Be happening now
27:19There's never been
27:21That many criminals
27:23Kingpin violators
27:25And terrorists
27:26That have been extradited
27:27At the exact same time
27:31Meetings regarding extradition
27:33Were incredibly sensitive
27:35Conversations that could
27:37Quite literally
27:38Impact democracy
27:40In Colombia
27:42Because if word got out
27:44There was great worry
27:45About violence
27:46The moment that
27:48The AUC leaderships
27:50Learned that they're
27:51About to be extradited
27:52They will put out
27:54That order
27:55To the tens of thousands
27:58Of armed individuals
28:00That were working for them
28:02To just commit mayhem
28:04In Colombia
28:07There was no margin
28:09For error whatsoever
28:10Legally
28:12And operationally
28:13We needed to make sure
28:15That we had everything
28:16Logistically in order
28:17Because this was truly
28:18A life or death situation
28:22I had a counterpart
28:23In Colombia
28:24A DEA agent
28:25I worked very closely with
28:26And he had called me
28:28And said
28:29Hey, keep this quiet
28:31There's something going on here
28:32Something big
28:33I don't know exactly
28:34What it is yet
28:34But get ready
28:45I distinctly remember
28:46Ambassador William Brownfield
28:48The U.S. Ambassador
28:49To Colombia
28:50He looks at me
28:51He said
28:52Can you do this?
28:55And I looked at him
28:56And I said
28:57I can get the resources
28:58And I can do this
29:00Failure was not an option
29:14Why did this happen
29:15In the dead of night?
29:18We had one shot at this
29:19We wouldn't get a second shot
29:22There was a real concern
29:23That defense counsel
29:25Would get to the courts
29:26And the courts
29:27Would impede that
29:28Through an injunction
29:32We had prisoners
29:33In four different locations
29:35In Colombia
29:36We would have to do this
29:38After the courts close
29:40After 6 p.m.
29:42And they'd have to be airborne
29:44And out of Colombian airspace
29:46Before the courts open
29:48The next morning
29:49From flash to bang
29:51It was a question of hours
29:52We were extraordinarily worried
29:55About the very strong likelihood
29:57Of lethal violence
29:58Being used
29:59In those moments
30:00In those hours
30:01Leading up to extradition
30:02Of these highly dangerous individuals
30:04I cannot emphasize enough
30:06How dangerous this operation was
30:12I had two separate sets
30:13Of teams that had to go out
30:15Depart from Bogota
30:17To the three corners of Colombia
30:20To different prisons
30:22One on the north coast
30:23In Barranquilla
30:25One in Medellin
30:26And one closer to Bogota
30:28And then I had a second team
30:31That were going to actually be
30:32The physical escorts
30:34From Bogota
30:35To the next stop
30:36Outside of Colombia
30:38Not to my knowledge
30:39There's ever been
30:40This many people
30:41Extradited of this level
30:43And this caliber
30:43At one time
30:44It was unprecedented
30:46You know
30:47I alerted my supervisor
30:48And you know
30:49The whole New York side
30:50Was it a buzz
30:52Colombia
30:53Is a very large country
30:55It is the size of California
30:57And Texas combined
30:59Keep in mind as well
31:01That Bogota
31:02Sits at just under
31:043,000 meters
31:05And that is complicated
31:07For pilots
31:08And small planes
31:09It is also subject
31:11To various changes
31:13In the weather
31:14To include freak
31:15Hail storms
31:16And fog
31:37Two of my agents
31:38Inside UH-60 Blackhawk
31:42Said they could not see
31:43Their own hand
31:45In front of their face
31:48And at one point
31:49The helicopter
31:51Went vertical
31:56Now they're not
31:56In comms
31:57With the pilot
31:58And so all they know
31:59Is they're feeling
32:00The G's against them
32:02As this helicopter
32:03Is going vertical
32:03And all they can think of
32:04Is they're about
32:05To smack into a mouth
32:11And twice
32:12The helicopters
32:12Had to come back
32:13Because of weather
32:14Twice
32:15Pilots basically said
32:17We're going to get
32:18Everybody killed
32:18If we do this
32:20And the head
32:21Of the Colombian
32:22Squad
32:23That was in charge
32:24Of this mission
32:24Is looking at his watch
32:25My DEA folks
32:27They're looking
32:28At their watch
32:28And the clock
32:29Is ticking
32:34They were going to
32:35Commandeer
32:36A bunch of
32:37Police vehicles
32:38And drive to the prison
32:39Seems reasonable
32:40That choice
32:42Was aborted
32:42The decision was
32:45If they go to the police
32:46Everybody's going to know
32:48There's going to be
32:49No secret
32:49So what did the head
32:51Of the
32:51Colombian National Police
32:53Of that special unit
32:54Decide to do
32:55They commandeered
32:56Seven taxis
32:57They loaded up
32:59In seven taxis
33:01From the airport
33:06Drove to the
33:07EW prison
33:09They do go pick up
33:10Seven of the most
33:11Notorious
33:12Violent
33:13And powerful
33:14Criminals
33:15That the world knows
33:17And now they're
33:18Driving them back
33:23I still don't know
33:25What was the reaction
33:26To the governor
33:27Of that prison
33:28When you know
33:30Normally
33:31It would be a
33:32UH-60
33:3320 million
33:34You know
33:3415 million dollar
33:35Blackhawk waiting
33:36And he goes out
33:38And he sees
33:39Seven Colombian
33:41Yellow taxis
33:56The warden said
33:58I'm not releasing
33:59This person
34:00I don't care
34:01What paperwork
34:02You have
34:03At this hour
34:05I wasn't notified
34:06Of this
34:07I am not losing
34:08My job
34:12And so
34:12A phone call
34:13Needed to be made
34:14Whether it was
34:15The president
34:16This could be
34:16Urban legend
34:18But the officer
34:19In charge
34:20Handed a phone
34:21Over to the warden
34:22And said
34:23There's somebody
34:24On the phone
34:24That would like
34:25To speak to you
34:29The conversation
34:30Went
34:30Yes Mr. President
34:32Immediately Mr. President
34:34Yes sir
34:35Thank you Mr. President
34:36Good night Mr. President
34:44Makako
34:45Spent his entire career
34:47His entire life
34:48Committing massacres
34:52What can he only be thinking
34:54In the middle of the night
34:56Being pulled out of prison
34:57Is going to happen
34:59He was white as a sheep
35:01He had the fear of God
35:03In his eyes
35:05He gets to the helicopter
35:07He sees
35:09My folks there
35:10He looks up
35:11And he says
35:12Are you guys DEA
35:15And they go
35:16Yeah we are
35:17And all of a sudden
35:18He didn't say a word
35:20But a smile
35:21Comes on his face
35:22Blood is rushing
35:23Back to his face
35:24Probably thought
35:26He was going to get
35:27What he used to give
35:37Don Berner
35:38Was deathly afraid
35:40Of extradition
35:42To the United States
35:49Don Berner
35:51More than anybody else
35:52Had basically
35:54Given up
36:11Ingresamos en una noche
36:12A siete prisiones
36:13En Colombia
36:13Donde estaban los catorce
36:16Extraditables recluidos
36:17Y en horas de la madrugada
36:19Pues los sacamos
36:20De sus celdas
36:22They were being
36:24Woken up
36:24In the middle
36:25Of the night
36:26Without any
36:27Advanced warning
36:29As they were
36:30Being transported
36:31To Bogota
36:32Their fear
36:33Morped
36:34Into anger
36:37One individual
36:38Actually looked
36:40At his captors
36:41And said
36:42I've seen your faces
36:43Each and every one
36:45Of you
36:45Are dead men
36:46And so are your families
36:50When everybody
36:52Had arrived
36:53Five o'clock
36:54Or so in the morning
36:55I headed down
37:00That moment
37:01Is indelibly
37:03Etched in my mind
37:06Fourteen
37:06Criminals
37:07Located at one place
37:09About to be flown out
37:10On a single
37:11Extradition mission
37:14It was chilling
37:16Because these were
37:18Individuals
37:18Who were entirely
37:19Capable of ordering
37:20Their lieutenants
37:22Their sicarios
37:23Their henchmen
37:24And their assassins
37:25To actually kill
37:26Not only in Colombia
37:28But in the United States
37:31I would be lying
37:33If I said
37:34We all weren't
37:35A bit nervous
37:36It was a very
37:38Very tense period
37:43Because I had lived
37:45The Don Berner life
37:46For two years
37:47Since I arrived
37:48In Colombia
37:48I knew exactly
37:50What I looked like
37:53He had no fight
37:55Left in him
37:55He knew it was
37:57The end of the road
37:59You had Don Berner
38:01Macaco
38:03Mancuso
38:03Jorge Cuarenta
38:05Bernan Geraldo Serna
38:07You literally had
38:09The entire
38:11Board of Directors
38:12Of the AUC
38:14At the DEA
38:15Hangle
38:15In Bogota, Colombia
38:17There has not been
38:19To this day
38:19An extradition mission
38:21That's moved
38:22So many
38:23Kingpins
38:24And terrorists
38:26At one time
38:27From the Americas
38:28To the United States
38:29Never
38:34The first question
38:36I asked
38:36Obviously was
38:37Can I get down there
38:38I want to fly
38:39On the aircraft
38:39Back with him
38:41And the answer
38:42Was absolutely not
38:44This is a super secret
38:46Thing going on
38:47In Colombia
38:47We got to move
38:48Quickly
38:49And get him
38:49Out of the country
38:54Until that ATR
38:55Got out of
38:56Colombian airspace
38:57And was over
38:58The Caribbean sea
38:59I was still
39:00Holding my breath
39:06That is the real
39:08Conair flight
39:10Nicolas Cage
39:11Has nothing on
39:12That mission
39:14Macaco
39:15Don Berner
39:16The top leaders
39:17Of the AUC
39:18Extradited to the
39:19United States
39:20It's a game changing
39:22Moment in the drug world
39:23Suddenly the big dogs
39:25Are all gone
39:27We fly everybody
39:29To Guantanamo Bay
39:31And Don Berner
39:32Gets his own Learjet
39:33To New York
39:42It was an unbelievable
39:44Feeling
39:46When that door opened
39:47The agent walked off
39:50And then right behind him
39:51Was Don Berner
39:54He looked like a broken man
39:58I told him my name
39:59Was John Barry
40:00He knew who I was
40:03Homeland Security
40:04Was there to
40:05Do the paperwork
40:06And then we walked through
40:07He was very cooperative
40:08At the time
40:09And he didn't give us
40:10A hard time at all
40:16When we're moving
40:17A seapot
40:18One of the world's
40:19Top drug traffickers
40:20I'm not stopping anywhere
40:22We went directly
40:24Downtown to the prison
40:25We knew
40:26That we had
40:26A dangerous guy here
40:28And there's been
40:29Escape attempts
40:29In the past
40:30And there was no way
40:31It was going to happen
40:32Let that happen
40:33On my watch
40:36It was incumbent
40:37On the United States
40:38Government
40:39To provide
40:40The evidence
40:41Necessary
40:42To convict
40:43These individuals
40:44In courts
40:45In the United States
40:46And obtain very lengthy
40:48Sentences
40:50They had all the evidence
40:52It was sealed up nice
40:53They put the bow
40:54On top of the prosecution
40:55And the defense attorneys
40:57Realized there's no way
40:58To beat the case
40:58That's because of
41:00Detectives like John Barry
41:01And others that worked
41:02On this investigation
41:03They put together
41:05An airtight prosecution
41:07What's amazing
41:08About this case
41:09Which is unheard of
41:11A month later
41:12He pled guilty
41:16There's nothing
41:17He could offer
41:18That would deserve
41:19A reduction in sentence
41:21When you have
41:22The baddest of the bad
41:23The worst of the worst
41:25Don Berner was not
41:26One of those people
41:27We wanted to get a break
41:29You have Don Berner
41:30The drug trapper
41:31You have Don Berner
41:32The terrorist
41:33He left behind
41:34A trail of blood
41:36That is unfathomable
41:38To the average person
41:42The Colombian government
41:44Prevents the United States
41:46From having a death penalty
41:48Or a life sentence
41:50For their people
41:52That are extradited
41:53Out of Colombia
41:55Famously
41:56In the sentencing
41:57The prosecutor
41:58Announced to the judge
42:00That Don Berner
42:01Was the Osama Bin Laden
42:03Of Colombia
42:04And you can imagine
42:06What an impact that is
42:07When you're saying that
42:08After 9-11
42:09In a courtroom
42:10In Manhattan
42:11It was really
42:12The death knell
42:13To any possibility
42:15Of Berner
42:16Ever being able
42:16To cooperate
42:17In any case
42:32I've got 375 months
42:35In prison
42:35Which is just over 31 years
42:46Don Berner
42:48Don Berner
42:48Tried invisibility
42:49On for size
42:50To begin with
42:51And then he set up
42:53A criminal infrastructure
42:55Upon which
42:57Today's invisibles
42:58Can now piggyback off
43:00This is a watershed moment
43:03So for me
43:04Don Berner
43:05Is
43:06The first
43:07In the process
43:08Of invisibility
43:11To the American people
43:13And to the world
43:14They don't know
43:15Who Don Berner is
43:16But Don Berner
43:17Can go toe to toe
43:18With the most
43:19Well known
43:20Traffkers in the world
43:21Rodriguez Orwell
43:23Is
43:24Pablo Escobar
43:25Don Berner
43:26In his own right
43:27Eventually
43:29Rivaled
43:29The worst
43:32His mistake
43:32Was that
43:33He got too big
43:35You can't kill
43:36Politicians
43:37And you can't kill
43:38Family members
43:39Of people
43:40That owe money
43:40And people
43:41Are just gonna
43:42Stay quiet forever
43:43And once you're
43:44In the limelight
43:45The bullseye's
43:46On your back
43:47And you better
43:48Look out
