00:45Hello and welcome to From the South. I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in Caracas, Venezuela. We begin with the
00:51news. Stay with us.
01:02The 61st session of the United Nations Human Rights Council was held in Geneva, Switzerland.
01:09During this session, the Foreign Minister of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Ivan Hill, denounced that human rights cannot be
01:16used as instruments of political wars.
01:19The Venezuelan Diplomatic Authority demanded that the United Nations Human Rights Council must regain its credibility and impartiality regardless of
01:27where the fault lies.
01:28Ivan Hill pointed out that after the events of January 3rd, the Bolivarian government adopted a diplomatic channel with the
01:36United States to resolve the differences, not from a position of subordination, but from one of equality.
01:46Excellencies, on the 3rd of January 2026, we saw a terrible turn of events, illegal military attack on our country,
01:59which caused over 100 deaths and the arbitrary detention of the President, Nicolas Maduro Moro, and the First Lady, Celia
02:10Flores.
02:10Whilst they were exercising their official functions.
02:18We have seen that there is a technological and military imbalance because we're up against the nuclear power of the
02:29United States.
02:30Nevertheless, we have opened up diplomatic channels in order to try and resolve the differences we have with that country.
02:35It's not a case of subordination, but it's on the basis of sovereign equality, not on the basis of fear,
02:42but on the belief that dialogue is the only civilized way for nations to behave with each other.
02:50During his speech at the United Nations Human Rights Council session, Venezuelan foreign minister Ivan Hill also reaffirmed the Bolivarian
02:58government's commitment to promoting dialogue and national reconciliation through the Amnesty Law.
03:03Let's listen.
03:05Bolivarian government has always promoted dialogue and reconciliation.
03:09Today we're working on a policy of healing and reconciliation.
03:19The policy of political coexistence, which we recently adopted, is an instrument for building peace and reconciliation following the recent
03:30political cycles.
03:31This ensures legal certainty and restorative justice without allowing for impunity for serious crimes such as crimes against humanity, murder
03:43or actions against national sovereignty.
03:47It creates a special monitoring commission and reiterates that we will solve our problems internally on the basis of the
03:58Constitution with you promoting peaceful coexistence.
04:02We change of topic and come to Mexico where the International Democratic Federation of Women sent a communique to the
04:09Office of the High Commission for Human Rights, denouncing the detention of Venezuelan First Lady Celia Flores de Maduro.
04:16In a statement, the organization expressed the International Democratic Federation in exercise of our global mandate as an organization defending
04:25human rights and promoting a life free from violence for all women addresses this honorable group of work to present
04:32and formally support the complaint regarding the arbitrary detention and illegal transfer of the Venezuelan citizen Celia Flores de Maduro.
04:42In this document, it was detailed that, as an organization that promotes the political participation of women and respect for
04:50democratic guarantees, we express our deep concern and alarm at the events that occurred in January 2026.
04:57We consider the armed coercion into sovereign territory and the subsequent trans-border kidnapping of a female political figure to
05:05be a nefarious precedent for the region and international law.
05:16The Mexican Secretariat of National Defense confirmed on Sunday an operation against the criminal group Jalisco New Generation Cartel that
05:24resulted in the death of criminal leader Rubén Nemesio Oseguera, also known as Mencho.
05:31In an official statement, in an official statement, the Office reported that the Special Forces of the Mexican Army planned
05:37and executed an operation in Tapalpa in the state of Jalisco with the help of military intelligence from the National

05:54Rubén Nemesio Oseguera and three seriously wounded.
05:58Moreover, two other members of this criminal organization were arrested and various weapons and armored vehicles were seized, including rocket
06:06launchers capable of shooting down aircraft and destroying armored vehicles.
06:11With these actions, the Ministry of National Defense reaffirms its commitment to contribute to the strengthening of Mexico's security.
06:30In the aftermath, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum took to her social media ex to express and address the events, informing
06:39the Secretariat of National Defense reported on the operation carried out this morning by the Mexican Army and the National
06:46Guard,
06:47which led to various roadblocks and other reactions.
06:50There is full coordination with the governments of all states and we must remain informed and calmed.
06:57Sheinbaum stated that the Security Cabinet's social media accounts are providing ongoing updates and assure that activities are proceeding normally
07:05throughout most of the country.
07:07In this regard, she expressed,
07:08My gratitude goes out to the Mexican Army, National Guard, Armed Forces and Security Cabinet.
07:15We work every day for peace, security, justice and the well-being of Mexico.
07:28And now we have a short break coming up then we will be right back with more information here in
07:32From the South.
07:53Welcome back to From the South and we go to China where the government urged the Donald Trump administration to
07:59immediately remove all the unilateral tariffs after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned most of the taxes imposed since its
08:06return to the presidency.
08:07The Chinese Ministry of Commerce described the measures as a violation of global trade and announced a comprehensive assessment of
08:14the impact this court ruling will have on the Asian exports.
08:18Beijing argues that this ruling confirms that the use of national emergencies to impose tariffs was an abuse of authority.
08:25Trade tensions escalate as Chinese companies await the return of millions of dollars in tariffs.
08:31U.S. President Trump declared last Saturday that he would rise global tariffs by 10 percent, which is legally allowed.
08:45In other news and on the occasion of Russia's Day of the Defender of the Fatherland, President Vladimir Putin highlighted
08:52the commitment of the soldiers and others that they are the ones who are fighting for the future independence, truth
08:58and also national justice.
09:01In this context, the Russian president delivered a speech after leading a flora tribute ceremony at the Kremlin, which commemorates
09:09the patriotism of the thousands of military personnel who risked their lives to defend and protect the country's sovereignty.
09:15The head of state also said that these last years are filled with special pride and gratitude for the efforts
09:24of the soldiers who are fulfilling their duty in the Ukrainian conflict.
09:27Russia and other countries that belong to the Soviet Union commemorate February 23rd as the Day of the Defender of
09:34the Fatherland in respect to the military history and to honor those who safeguard national security.
09:55Also in Russia, the Ministry of Defense reported the destruction of Ukrainian infantry combat vehicles that were attacking the Saporozhye
10:04province using self-propelled artillery.
10:06The operation was carried out by a crew from the Akatsia Hotwitsar belonging to the Vostok force group, which managed
10:16to locate and neutralize the enemy targets with high precision.
10:20Moscow credited domestically made weapon systems for the mission's success, noting the reliability in intense combat.
10:28This attack is part of the increasing artillery duels that currently define the line of contact in the southern sector
10:35of the conflict.
10:41Now we are heading for a second solo break coming up to Ngoi Way. We'll be right back with more
10:45from the south.
11:14Welcome back to From the South and now let's talk about Palestine-Easraeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu formalized a new
11:21security doctrine marking an aggressive shift in the Middle East region.
11:25The plan abandons containment for preventive action and deep military projection.
11:29It establishes buffer zones in neighboring territories, also expanding the Zionist occupation under the guise of national security.
11:37Under the banner of the War of Renewal, the Israeli military seeks to bring combat to hostile territories and capitals.
11:44This new logic rejects limited battles in favor of constant operations to neutralize any potential threat before it can consolidate.
11:54This approach legitimizes the use of disproportionate force and ongoing interference in the sovereignty of neighboring Arab countries.
12:05And early Monday morning, colonists set fire to a mosque located between the towns of Sarra and Tell, west of
12:13Nablus, and scrawled racist slogans on its walls.
12:17According to local sources, the settlers set fire to the Abu Bakr al-Siddiq mosque by pouring flammable liquid at
12:24the entrance.
12:25They also wrote racist slogans, hostile to Arabs and Muslims on the mosque's wall.
12:31The Palestinian Ministry of Endowment and Religious Affairs condemned the attack, describing it as part of a series of escalating
12:38assaults on Islamic holy sites and civilian property.
12:48And in other news, on Sunday, Pakistan carried out an airstrike in eastern Afghanistan, killing 17 civilians, including 11 children,
12:56and also wounding five others.
12:59The operation hit residential areas in Nagarhar province, intensifying regional tensions between the two countries.
13:06The head of information for the regional Department of Information and Culture, Karaishi Badlun, told local media that the attacks
13:14hit the Besh Sud district of Nagarhar province, directly affecting homes and a religious school.
13:22The search for more victims has been delayed due to difficulties in removing the breeze.
13:27This attack is part of a series of Pakistani incursions that have killed 70 people and injured more than 400
13:34since October.
13:40The Afghan government also protested the Pakistani bombings that killed civilians.
13:46The Afghan Ministry of Foreign Affairs protested the recent attacks, calling them a clear violation of the nation's territorial integrity.
13:52The Afghan Foreign Ministry accuses the Pakistani army of bombing civilian areas in Nagarhar and Patika, killing many, including women
14:02and also children.
14:03The Pakistani government claims the attacks were retaliation against Afghan Taliban camps, accused of organising suicide attacks from Afghan territory.
14:12It is important to note that these incidents are taking place in a context of growing cross-border violence since
14:172021.
14:26And also local police reported that at least nine people were killed and 35 others were injured when a passenger
14:32bus overturned due to a reckless driving in the western Afghan province of Baghdise.
14:37On Sunday, spokesman for the Baghdise Provincial Police, Sadiqala Sadeqi, said that the accident occurred on the highway connecting Kala
14:48Inou, the provincial capital, with Herat in the west of the country.
14:52Nine passengers, including women and children, were killed instantly.
14:56Police and residents also transported 35 injured people to nearby health centres for treatment.
15:02Sadiqala Sadeqi also expressed concern that the death toll could rise, noting that several of the injured were in critical
15:08condition.
15:15And in other topics, North Korea's ruling party unanimously re-elected Kim Jong-un as its general secretary, extending his
15:23leadership until the next party congress.
15:25The single party congress functions as a strategic platform where Kim Jong-un projects his political ambitions for 2031, the
15:33North Korean leader reaffirms his commitment to economic self-sufficiency, and a mass mobilisation campaign to shield the country from
15:42external sanctions.
15:43With this re-election, Kim not only guarantees the perpetuity of his dynasty, but also positions North Korea as part
15:51of the Russian lock, strengthened by its alliance with Russia and its status as a nuclear power.
16:03And like this, we have come to the end of this news brief.
