Mexico: Death of “El Mencho” highlights CJNG’s global threat

In Mexico, the death of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, alias “El Mencho”, closes the chapter on one of the world’s most wanted criminal leaders and puts the spotlight on the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). Mexican authorities classify the cartel as the third most dangerous criminal organization worldwide. Under Oseguera Cervantes leadership, the CJNG expanded through a corporate model, filling power vacuums left by other cartels. The U.S. Department of Justice has listed it among the five most dangerous transnational threats. Known for extreme violence, the cartel has deployed drones with explosives and built extensive money‑laundering networks, enabling operations in the United States, Europe, Asia, and Australia.
