The U.S. Supreme Court has deprived the Trump administration of its most frequently used tool of economic pressure: the indiscriminate imposition of tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. In its ruling, the Court declared the tariffs illegal, curbing the president’s ability to unilaterally impose global import taxes. This decision marks a significant setback for Trump’s trade strategy, which relied heavily on emergency powers to enforce broad tariffs against multiple countries. The ruling is expected to have major implications for U.S. economic policy and international trade relations.

00:00We continue with more information from the United States, where the Supreme Court has deprived the Trump administration of its
00:06most used weapon of blackmail against the world,
00:08the indiscriminate imposition of tariffs throughout the International Emergency Powers Act, or corresponded in the U.S.
00:16Henry Camelo has all the details.
00:19While the United States Supreme Court struck down the Trump administration by declaring illegal the imposition of tariffs through the
00:28use of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act.
00:32Chief Justice Roberts wrote the decision that basically stated that Trump was exceeding his authority.
00:42The decision does not affect all tariffs imposed by Trump administration, as it maintains those imposed on steel and aluminum
00:50through separate laws.
00:52However, the court ruling voids tariffs in two categories.
00:57One, reciprocal tariffs range from 34% for China to a base limit of up to 10% for the
01:06rest of the world.
01:07The other, the 25% tariffs that Trump imposed on some products from Canada, China, and Mexico due to their
01:17alleged inability to stop the flow of fentanyl.
01:21According to the Treasury Department data, by December, $133 billion have been collected in tariffs under the International Emergency Economic
01:31Powers Act.
01:32The court ruling enraged President Trump, who launched harsh criticism against the Supreme Court.
01:39What a shame, having to do with voting in particular, when in fact they're just being fools and lapdogs for
01:47the rhinos and the radical left Democrats,
01:49and not that this should have anything at all to do with it.
01:53They're very unpatriotic and disloyal to our Constitution.
01:56And he promised to look for other ways to implement the collection of tariffs.
02:03We have alternatives, great alternatives.
02:06Could be more money, we'll take in more money, and we'll be a lot stronger for it.
02:10We're taking in hundreds of billions of dollars, we'll continue to do so.
02:14Trump reacted immediately to that by stating that he would use other means in order to impose these tariffs,
02:25and immediately stating that he now is imposing 10% tariffs across the board.
02:31For analyst Steve Elner, the Supreme Court's decision sets a solid precedent for the balance of power in the United
02:41States.
02:41Regardless of whether he continues to attempt to use the threat of tariffs for political purposes,
02:50the mere fact that the Supreme Court, that's the Supreme Court,
02:55the mere fact that they nulled a decision of the Trump administration in the area of tariffs,
03:01I think will encourage countries to attempt to defend their national sovereignty.
03:13In other words, Trump has really violated the national sovereignty of other countries using the threat of tariffs.
03:19Now the governors of Illinois and California are demanding checks from the Trump administration
03:25for over $1,000 for families in those states to cover the cost they incur in their homes due to
03:34the tariffs.
