On Saturday, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez reaffirmed his government’s commitment to achieving real equality for the Roma community and combating discrimination. At an event commemorating the 600th anniversary of the arrival of the Romani people in Spain, held at the Palacio de la Moncloa, Sánchez highlighted their contributions to the nation’s culture and history. He also awarded two of Spain’s highest honors: one to singer Lolita Flores and another to guitarist José Antonio Carmona, known as Pepe Habichuela. The Roma first arrived in the Iberian Peninsula in 1425, when Alfonso V of Aragon mentioned them in a safe‑conduct as people from Lesser Egypt.
