President Trump said in a news briefing Friday that 32,000 people were killed during the recent protests in Iran, a far higher death toll than has previously been reported. Trump, who made the remarks while addressing the Supreme Court's ruling striking down his sweeping tariffs, did not offer a source for the death toll. When asked if he had a message for the people of Iran, Mr. Trump said "the people of Iran are very different than the leaders of Iran" and called it "a very, very, very sad situation." Mass anti-government protests roiled Iran in January until a government crackdown crushed the demonstrations. January 8 and 9 are believed to have been the bloodiest, most brutal days since the current government was founded in 1979, but an internet blackout has made it difficult to get information about the full extent of the death toll, injuries and arrests.

00:00You know, the people of Iran are a lot different than the leaders of Iran.
00:03And it's a very, very, very sad situation.
00:08But 32,000 people were killed over a relatively short period of time.
00:13They were going to hang 800, two weeks ago, hang, hang, some by crane.
00:19They lift them up with a tall crane and they play them around the square.
00:23They were going to hang 837 people.
00:26And I gave them the word, if you hang one person, even one person, that you're going to be hit
00:32right then and there.
00:33I wasn't waiting two weeks and negotiating.
00:35Mr. President, what's your message to the Iranian people after two rounds of talks with them?
00:39Do you have any message to the Iranian people?
00:41The Iranian people in Iran or people here?
00:44People in Iran.
00:47They better negotiate a fair deal.
00:50They better negotiate.

01:25I wasn't waiting two weeks and negotiating.
01:27And they gave up the hanging.
01:29They didn't hang 837.
01:31Supposedly, they didn't hang anybody.
01:33But no, I feel very badly for the people of Iran.
01:35They've lived like, they've lived in hell.
01:37Mr. President, what's your message to the Iranian people after two rounds of talks with them?
01:41Do you have any message to the Iranian people?
01:43The Iranian people in Iran or people here?
01:46People in Iran.
01:49They better negotiate a fair deal.
01:53You know, the people of Iran are a lot different than the leaders of Iran.
01:57And it's a very, very, very sad situation.

02:35But no, I feel very badly for the people of Iran.
02:37They've lived like, they've lived in hell.
02:39Please.
02:40Thank you, sir.
02:40Mr. President, you mentioned multiple times foreign influence over the Supreme Court.
02:45Do you have evidence of that?
02:47And if not, will you investigate that?
02:49You're going to find that.
02:50You're going to find that, sir.
02:52What alternatives are you going to put into place in your relationship with Europe?
02:56And also those tariffs that have been called illegal.
03:00How are they going to impact the relationship with Russia that you sanctioned some countries?
03:05Well, I want Europe to strengthen up.
03:07Europe has gone woke.
03:09Europe is not recognizable when you go into so many places.
03:12It's not all countries.
03:13You look at Hungary.
03:15You look at Poland, Czech, Slovakia.
03:23There are some countries that have gone very much the opposite, and some others.
03:29But Europe has to be strong, and they become soft and not recognizable.
03:35You go into some of the countries, I don't want to be specific, but I think everyone knows
03:39what I'm talking about.
03:40And they're not recognizable.
03:44They become, the environmentalists have taken over.
03:47They've got windmills destroying their fields, and their beautiful meadows, and their oceans,
03:53and they're paying a fortune.
03:56Now, Europe has to get smart.
03:58Europe's getting killed on two things, energy and immigration.
04:02And if they don't solve both of them fast, Europe is not the same place.
04:07Yeah, please.
04:09Justices Fortsett and Barrett, are you surprised in particular by their decision today?
04:14And do you regret nominating them?
04:16I don't want to say whether or not I regret.
04:18I think their decision was terrible.
04:19Yeah.
04:23I think it's an embarrassment to their families, you want to know the truth, the two of them.
04:28Yeah.
04:32Mr. President, specifically on that $2,000 tariff check.
04:35I didn't call you.
04:36I didn't call you.
04:36You didn't call me?
04:37Yeah, Mr. President, to be clear, do you believe at the end of implementing these new
04:41tariff tools, the tariff rate and tariffs will ultimately be higher than they currently
04:44are?
04:45Potentially higher.
04:46How much higher?
04:46It depends, whatever we want them to be.
04:48But we want them to be fair for other countries.
04:51And, you know, we have some countries that have treated us really badly for years, and it's
04:56going to be high for them.
04:57And we have other countries that have been very good, and it's going to be very reasonable
05:00for them.
05:03Specifically on the tariffs question, I mean, on the $2,000.
05:06I didn't call you.
05:08Mr. President, thank you, Mr. President.
05:09Do you have any plans to travel to India for the Quad Summit, and how do you think your
05:13relationship with India is right now?
05:15I think my relationship with India is fantastic.
05:18And we're doing trade with India.
05:20India pulled out of Russia.
05:22You know, India was getting its oil from Russia, right?
05:27And they pulled way back at my request, because we want to settle that horrible war where 25,000
05:32people are dying every month.
05:33And my relationship with Prime Minister Modi is, I would say, great.
05:39I also stopped a war between India and Pakistan, as you know.
05:43There were 10 planes we shot down.
05:45That war was going and probably going nuclear.
05:49And just yesterday, the Prime Minister of Pakistan said President Trump saved 35 million lives by
05:58getting them to stop.
06:00And I did it largely with tariffs.
06:02I said, look, you're going to fight.
06:03That's fine.
06:03But you're not going to do business with the United States.
06:05And you're going to pay a 200 percent tariff, each country.
06:09And they called up and they said, we have made peace.
06:13Okay.
06:15I just want to thank you all.
06:17Look, great certainty has been brought back to the economy of the United States and actually
06:23the economy of the world, because we generate so much in the world.
06:27We're the biggest in the world and we're now the strongest by far.
06:30We were a country that was dead one and a half years ago.
06:33Now we have the hottest country in the world.
06:34We're going to keep it that way.
06:35Thank you very much, everybody.
