00:00with their bodies he has played every play as hard as he could sometimes i wonder if it's wise
00:09playing with pain is a fact of life in the end of the game everybody plays hurt and there's so
00:15many that you'll never hear about and mcnab is hurt gutsy for sure but going into a game knowing
00:19you have a torn acl or a broken leg what a gutty performance that's the attitude of greatness
00:26for god really overcome an injury nobody envisions himself catching a pass and having ronnie lot
00:34knock them 360 degrees in the air and land on their head oh my god people actually thought
00:41he was dead call him gutsy or just plain crazy but the ability to overcome devastating trauma
00:49then turn in a historic performance defines the players in our list
00:55never underestimate the heart of a champion never underestimate a football player's toughness
01:00doesn't matter what position those guys are cut from different cloths
01:09i can't imagine a more polarizing guy in any other city than donald mcnab
01:17in philadelphia mcnab has always been judged
01:22not tough enough i mean wow that debate doesn't happen anywhere else about anyone
01:26you can't complain about his ability as a quarterback yet they do because they look at his personality
01:31he's cool and he thinks he's cool and he's going to tell you that he's cool
01:36don't confuse the fact that he's not a tough guy and or willing to go out and sacrifice his body
01:41in one gutsy 2002 performance he scored a perfect 10 in our countdown
01:48what donald mcnab did was gutsy
01:51he's making plays on a bad ankle he made that look like he has done it every day of his
01:56life
01:57if that doesn't take guts knowing there's something wrong with your ankle
02:00and come out and playing and having a great game i don't know what you're looking at
02:05the philadelphia eagles select donovan mcnab
02:10whether it was booing him at the draft or cringing at his super bowl sickness
02:15can you imagine what he'd be doing if he were healthy
02:17philly fans kept mcnab at arm's length
02:20that's played against him and the fact that donovan has denied that he threw up in the super bowl
02:25when several of his teammates who were standing right there and may have gotten some on their cleats
02:29have said oh no he threw up in the super bowl but it doesn't stop him from being a tough
02:34guy
02:34he's willing able and oftentimes capable of playing in pain
02:38he's gonna stop and be hit and brought down a sack
02:42the football comes loose and mcnab is hurt
02:44mcnab got twisted like a pretzel and almost doubled over backwards
02:49oh my god that's disgusting that's nasty
02:51he's starting to kind of like a warrior get back up to his feet
02:55and at that point you kind of thought maybe the game was lost
02:58he refused an x-ray he had to know something was wrong
03:02you're gonna tell me that's not as gutsy as it gets
03:05you want to find out i mean this could be your career
03:07and it is caught for a touchdown
03:09i love pain and i may be a little different than others but for me pain doesn't affect me
03:14shovel passes to the levens and he rolls it for the touchdown
03:18look at him now hardly he can't even run
03:20he can hardly walk
03:22played the whole second half of that game on one leg
03:26when he would throw he would throw and that foot will always be in the air
03:29so he basically one arm in the ball
03:31to fight through the pain he was going through
03:33that was real good
03:34the fact that he stuck in there and then had a career game
03:3720 for 25 and four tds was mind-blowing
03:40now he's rolling out he fires the football
03:42and it is complete to staley
03:44who is pushing and trying to get
03:46and he ends for a touchdown
03:48a gutsy performance by mcnapp today
03:51not until after the game did our number 10 gutsiest performer
03:56find out that he played on a broken ankle
03:58it's incredible
03:59do people realize that
04:01a broken ankle
04:03and philly fans still think he's kind of soft
04:06what do you have to do in philadelphia
04:08i mean i guess you have to beat up on apollo creed
04:13coming up
04:14qbs take it on the chin
04:16the ribs
04:17and the knees
04:18they're going 100 million miles an hour
04:20you can get killed
04:21and equipment
04:24larry wilson had his casts
04:26which helped him play with two broken hands
04:29steve de burgh played with a pin in his pinky
04:31and a mic in his face mask
04:33i don't think they were going to have a phone at all
04:35but nowhere their technology and guts come together better
04:38than in our next performance
04:40it's for a minute of video game
04:42the number nine gutsiest performance of all time
04:45dan pastorini plays with cracked ribs
04:48who was the first person who looked at a cow
04:51and said you know what i'm going to pull on those things
04:53and whatever comes out i'm going to drink it
04:55don't try this at home now
04:56to be the first to do anything
04:58makes unbelievable stones
05:00dan pastorini knows what being a pioneer is all about
05:04in 1978 he became the first player in history to wear a flak jacket
05:08it helped him turn in our number nine gutsiest performance
05:11and then it became a standard piece of quarterback equipment
05:14you can see underneath the jerseys they all wear
05:18he wears a flak jacket so he doesn't get killed
05:21takes the ribs they're stunning and they still have full motion
05:24now quarterback would just as soon go without his jock
05:28as he would his flak jacket
05:31back in the day they didn't have
05:32i would call dad pastorini gutsy
05:34you can just join us
05:35dad pastorini out of the ball game
05:37he broke three ribs
05:40in this one game
05:41and he was in the hospital
05:43and everybody's going
05:44whoa my goodness what are we going to do
05:46into his hospital room come these two guys
05:48he has never seen before
05:49one guy is carrying a paper bag
05:51and the other guy is carrying a baseball bag
05:53and dad's like oh my god
05:55this is some guy that's coming to beat me to death
05:57but the gentleman says don't be alarmed
05:59reaches in the paper bag
06:00says i think i have something here
06:02that can protect your ribs
06:03he puts on the flak jacket
06:05and his friend takes the baseball bat
06:07and starts clubbing away at the flak jacket
06:10after several licks i think pastorini was sold
06:12this thing was going to hold up to the scrutiny
06:14of a 275 pound defensive lineman
06:17and that's how the flak jacket was invented by byron dodson
06:22yes sir
06:23decades before the advent of the reebok pumps
06:26the flak jacket prototype was assembled with inflatable chambers
06:30when word spread of this new magic vest
06:32critics claimed that byron donsus
06:34even more than his invention
06:36was full of hot air
06:38i didn't think he'd be able to do anything
06:39i don't care what kind of jacket he had on
06:41you can see underneath the jersey
06:42the flak vest
06:44but it was phenomenal
06:45the way he was able to work with that thing
06:47it does a great job
06:48and it does not restrict the quarterback
06:50because that whole outfit only weighs seven ounces
06:52miami's going to have to do something to stop dan pastorini
06:58with the jacket securing his ribs
07:01he went on to perform superbly
07:02pastorini throws
07:03touchdown
07:04touchdown
07:05pastorini
07:06in the second quarter where dan pastorini
07:08pastor nearly 200 yards
07:09brilliant
07:10numbers
07:10for a healthy man
07:11he's hurting
07:12in three halves of postseason play
07:13pastorini now 491 yards and six touchdowns
07:17that's doing it
07:20you're so banged up going into this game
07:22yet you threw so extremely well
07:24pastorini is one of the most courageous players
07:27that ever played in the league
07:28but nobody really talks about it
07:29because he never really let on
07:31you know the little necks and bruises don't hurt when it counts
07:33fans in houston never appreciate it
07:35until 78
07:36when you've got an injury like cracked ribs
07:39you can hardly breathe
07:40pastorini play
07:41and pastorini is a tough individual
07:43he knows he's going to take some links
07:45and brother there it is
07:46the right rib
07:47and that lifted the team
07:48he was never appreciated until 78
07:51because he wasn't any good
07:53most of his career
07:55he's playing this well
07:56hurt
07:56home philis may decide next year
07:58to make sure he's hurt before every ball game
07:59behind pastorini
08:01the upstart oilers advanced all the way
08:03to the afc title
08:04he earned a lot of admiration
08:08everybody in this room deserves a game ball
08:10but don't believe anybody
08:12deserves one more than number seven
08:15the number eight
08:16gutsiest performance of all time
08:18philip rivers plays with poor acl
08:22going into the afc championship game in 2007
08:25well danian thompson was obviously on this pedestal
08:28and philip rivers was a guy whose mouth was writing checks
08:32his play couldn't cash
08:34philip's not afraid to jaw with anybody
08:35yelling at opposing fans
08:37he's carrying on a conversation saying i'll be back
08:40yelling at opposing players
08:41who knows what philip rivers was saying to richard seymour
08:44some of the players are loud
08:45usually a quarterback doesn't do that
08:48but now
08:49his teammates will never look at him to say
08:51rivers was gutsy
08:54there's no question
08:55during one week in january 2007
08:57philip rivers injured his knee in a divisional win over the colts
09:00was he limping going off
09:02under one secret surgery the next day
09:04i'm gonna do all i can to be ready at this point
09:05that's all i got for you
09:07play the entire afc title game
09:09yes indeed philip rivers is coming out
09:11then disclose to the world that he faced the patriots on a partially torn acl
09:15they'd have to tie him down
09:16to keep him out of that game
09:18put it all together
09:19and you've got our number eight
09:21gutsiest performance
09:22a lot of guys would have put their hand up and said
09:25i can't play
09:26he did not do that
09:27what a gutty performance by this quarterback
09:29to go out there and put his knee
09:31and ultimately his career on the line
09:33it has to go down as one of the gutsiest performances
09:37you wonder if philip rivers courage
09:40didn't undermine his team's chance
09:42against the 17-0 new england patriots
09:44he's got a big race on there
09:46you can see it
09:47billy volick led him to a victory
09:49against indianapolis the week before
09:51yeah it's pretty neat
09:52but here's the deal
09:53rivers is your leader
09:55think about it
09:56you want to put billy volick
09:57who really hasn't played in this situation
09:59no
10:00i'm going to play in the guy
10:01that's been under center all year long
10:03of course everyone was focused on
10:05rivers playing through an anterior cruciate ligament tear
10:08i was wondering why more people
10:09weren't focusing on some of the poor passes
10:11that he was throwing
10:12this is under thrown 10 yards
10:13even though it's downwind
10:15you've got a bum knee
10:16you can barely walk
10:17playing a game
10:18with athletes that are going
10:19100 million miles an hour
10:20rivers took a hit
10:22somehow he's back up
10:23i don't think anyone will ever accuse
10:25philip rivers are being soft
10:26but it may very well have kept his team out of soup
10:30real guts is is working at you know a job where you're physically in danger
10:36where you have a 350 pound lineman coming at you
10:39philip rivers faced it all in the number eight gutsiest performance
10:43and the world realized that he's the lead charger
10:46lt and philip rivers position sort of swung
10:49tomlinson sits there with a yoda-like figure with his helmet on
10:53and philip rivers nearly gets the chargers into the super bowl
10:56that game against new england convinced every teammate
11:00he is the ultimate ultimate gamer
11:02now his play is writing the checks as opposed to his mouth
11:05coming up
11:06our gutsiest players confront aches, pains
11:09and youth billy jack
11:20the price that he paid for his teammates that day
11:23and what he was willing to do for us to get it done
11:25tells you a lot about him
11:27hey we're ready for you
11:28have a good fight td
11:29just done
11:31philip davis was the high-flying ace running back
11:33the broncos needed to get back to the super bowl in 1997
11:37yeah we have john elway but our brain butted for us to win in the playoff
11:41we gotta ride terrell davis
11:42but it was davis's gutsy ability to fly blind
11:45that earned him the number seven spot on our list
11:48watch out
11:49okay just do this
11:51you don't worry about seeing it in this place
11:53because we're going to fake it to you
11:58if terrell davis had not been discovered in the sixth round of the draft by the broncos
12:02i'm not sure that john elway would have retired to the super bowl ring
12:06he was the guy who needed that football team
12:09he has 176 yards and about 30 carries
12:13low-round draft pick but the guy just kept getting better and better
12:161100 his first year
12:171500 his second year
12:191700
12:21297 with three 100-yard playoff games
12:24davis flew the broncos into the stratosphere
12:27timbert goes to the super bowl
12:29terrell davis
12:30outside 40
12:3135-30
12:32inside of 25
12:33still at his feet
12:34inside the 20
12:35okay goal line
12:36elway handoff davis
12:38in the end zone
12:39touchdown
12:39yeah
12:40but on the brightest day of his career
12:42storm clouds from his past
12:45rolled in
12:46he needs
12:47can't see
12:48can't focus
12:49you all right
12:50getting better
12:50terrell davis suffered from migraines
12:53davis may be shaken up
12:54and this would be costly for the broncos
12:57migraines makes you nauseous
12:59it makes you wear
13:00everything is so sensitive
13:01light
13:02smell
13:03sound
13:04anything is intensified
13:06about 10 times
13:07in all the games i've ever played in my life
13:09it had to come
13:10on this sunday
13:11i was praying to god that they
13:12not not now
13:13and i noticed i had a headache
13:14and i went over to mike
13:15and told him i couldn't see
13:18his response was something like
13:20uh well it doesn't matter if you can see or not
13:22you don't worry about seeing on this place
13:23because we're going to fake it to you
13:24he sort of needs you in this game
13:26so that they think
13:27we're going to run the football
13:29but if you're not in there
13:30they won't believe we're going to run
13:31okay
13:32terrell got to the huddle
13:32he says hey i can't see
13:33so i said all right well
13:34you just run and i'll adjust to you
13:37the last minute i did make a nice little move
13:40to get out of his way
13:41so i could see enough to make this one person miss
13:44but that was about it
13:45john it will drop into the end zone
13:48touchdown
13:51with denver up by only a field goal
13:54davis missed nearly the entire second quarter
13:56and the biggest question now is
13:58where is terrell
14:00we obviously didn't gain one yard
14:03that particular quarter running the ball
14:04so there was a noticeable absence of td
14:07we got the medication any mention
14:09and terrell davis is the guy
14:12who gets knocked for his offensive line
14:15in the super bowl he won mvp
14:18in
14:20the offensive line wasn't that great
14:22when he wasn't running
14:24come back real quick
14:26lucky for us
14:27his vision was starting to come back
14:29davis to the end zone
14:31touchdown
14:31i remember laying the game thinking
14:33man we can't lose
14:34i don't want to lose
14:35not now
14:36i don't want to lose right now
14:37it is a walking standing up
14:39our number seven gutsiest performer
14:41set a super bowl record
14:42with three rushing touchdowns
14:44and was named the game's mvp
14:47they have shocked everybody
14:49and they have won
14:50super bowl 32
14:52the number six gutsiest performance
14:55of all time
14:56gale sayers come back
14:58from a knee injury
14:59six
15:00he came back from knee surgery
15:02and was a leading rusher
15:03the next year
15:04they made a movie
15:05brian song about it
15:06six
15:08this would give me
15:0918 inches of daylight
15:10that's all i need
15:11well maybe it was
15:1224 inches of daylight
15:13he was the most
15:15magical and elusive
15:16runner
15:17the game has ever seen
15:18in 1968
15:20he has run to greatness
15:21took a terrible turn
15:23bear suffered a devastating
15:24ball
15:25when sayers was cut down
15:26a knee injury
15:27that would be the death
15:28nail for anybody
15:29back then
15:29no clinics
15:30where you could just go
15:32and get sculpted
15:33cleaned out
15:33we take that for granted
15:34these days
15:36gale sayers
15:37was born to run
15:38and there was not much
15:39going to stop him
15:42in 1965
15:44sayers came streaking
15:46out of college
15:47as the kansas comic
15:48propelled by speed
15:50and elusiveness
15:51early in his career
15:52it was the greatest rookie year
15:53that any player
15:54had ever had
15:55he scored 22 touchdowns
15:56in 12 game season
15:57and he had 6
15:59in one game
16:00sayers
16:00it was a 14 game season
16:02but yes
16:03a one man gale
16:06dashing 85 dazzling yards
16:09on the longest putt return
16:11of the season
16:11here he is
16:12galloping gale
16:13carrying the mail
16:13they should have put him
16:14in the hall of fame
16:15that night
16:16he was like trying to catch
16:18liquid mercury
16:19with your bare hands
16:20an amoeba like
16:21a paramecium
16:23split
16:24into two
16:25things
16:26and
16:27the defensive people
16:28went at the wrong one
16:30it almost got like
16:31he stoned cops
16:32when you watched him
16:32run the football
16:33gale says
16:34he'll come down
16:34and put a move on him
16:35and if you made the tackle
16:36at the wrong time
16:37it'd break your wrist
16:38hit the ground
16:38or hit missy
16:39one man
16:40he was dead
16:41he didn't know it
16:42but i knew
16:45his second season
16:46he led the league
16:47in rushing
16:48and in 1968
16:49he was averaging
16:50over 6 yards
16:51of carry
16:52before his injury
16:53when he got hurt
16:54they didn't even
16:55have no cards
16:56they took him off
16:57like he was a
16:57world war 1
16:58wounded veteran
16:59huh
16:59a stretcher
17:00it was like
17:01the civil war
17:01like in
17:02gone with the wind
17:03they put their
17:04leg back together
17:05with cat gut
17:06and different stuff
17:07which i don't even
17:08want to talk about
17:08i had three ligaments
17:10torn out of a boat
17:10and usually
17:11the team would say
17:12hey pack your bags
17:13and go home
17:14you're through
17:15i want to prove
17:16that you could
17:17come back
17:17off of a knee injury
17:18in one year
17:19i proved that
17:21you could come back
17:22give me 18 inches
17:23of daylight
17:23that's all i need
17:25i proved it
17:276th
17:28next year he comes
17:29back and gains
17:291200 yards
17:30on 4.2 yards
17:31a carry
17:32this most elusive
17:33of runners
17:34that's ripping off
17:3520, 30, 40 yard
17:37plays all the time
17:38to think that he
17:39would go through
17:39a whole season
17:40and not have a run
17:41longer than 28 yards
17:43but at the end
17:43of the year
17:44he's still the best
17:45runner in football
17:46what he counted on
17:47was his ability
17:48to shift gears
17:50to shift directions
17:51very quickly
17:52and to accelerate
17:53the fact that he
17:54rushed over a thousand
17:55yards was phenomenal
17:56he came back
17:57and showed a style
17:58that people didn't know
17:59a toughness
18:00he showed strength
18:01and power
18:02even though he was not big
18:03and to come back
18:04and play on that injury
18:06he inspired a lot of people
18:07Sayers is a magical name
18:09in NFL annals
18:10and he's proof
18:11that you don't have
18:12to have a 10-15 year
18:13career to make Canton
18:15our number 6
18:16gutsiest performer
18:17strolled into the
18:18hall of fame
18:19as the youngest member
18:20ever inducted
18:21his like
18:22will never be seen again
18:27coming up next
18:28confronting hard hits
18:30and heartbreak
18:31the legend grew a bit
18:33it made it
18:33five gutsiest performance
18:35of all time
18:36Brent Favre
18:37plays for his father
18:39Brent Favre
18:42he's got guts
18:43courage
18:44however you want to put it
18:46up
18:47damn
18:48line of
18:51breath
18:52Favre knows what it's like
18:54to play through pain
18:55you can see that
18:56right thumb
18:57there's a split
18:58on it
18:58in college
18:59he beat Alabama
19:00just 6 weeks
19:01after losing nearly
19:0230 inches
19:02of his intestines
19:03I'm in so much pain
19:05right now
19:05I can haul the waves
19:06out of this bed
19:06but it took a different
19:08type of guts
19:09for Favre to absorb
19:10the blow that came
19:11on December 21st
19:122003
19:13when his father
19:14Irvin died of a heart
19:15attack one day
19:16before the Packers
19:17Monday night game
19:18in Oakland
19:19my condolences
19:20to Brent
19:21and his lovely wife
19:22Deanna
19:22I knew right away
19:23his first thought
19:24was probably
19:25Irvin and his head
19:26don't you quit
19:26and I wasn't gonna
19:27let him quit
19:28take care of business
19:29he knows when
19:30to be business
19:30and he knows
19:31when to play
19:32get your ass out there
19:33and play
19:33are you crazy
19:34and I could see
19:35him saying that
19:38cool as it is
19:40Brent Favre
19:40had to make
19:41the decision
19:41does he play tonight
19:42or doesn't he play tonight
19:44he has chosen to play
19:45butterflies is an understatement
19:47I was most nervous
19:47I've ever been in a game
19:49before Favre
19:49demonstrated his
19:50emotional guts
19:51to the world
19:52by taking the field
19:53our number 5
19:54performers show
19:55the Packers
19:55the special stuff
19:56he's made of
19:57in a team meeting
19:58he spoke about
19:59his love for his father
20:01his love
20:01of his teammates
20:02and then how much
20:04he loved football
20:04and it was gonna
20:05give the guys
20:06the very best he had
20:07in the midst of
20:08just losing his father
20:09he said that he had
20:11our back
20:12as a football team
20:13as a player
20:13as an individual
20:14I mean
20:15you could have heard
20:15a pin drop
20:16in that room
20:19he's grieving
20:21he's reeling
20:21there's no road map
20:23to this
20:23you don't say
20:24I'll do this
20:24like I did
20:25something else
20:25a few years ago
20:26and he goes out
20:27and is positively
20:28flawless
20:30in that unique
20:31Brett Favre way
20:32falling back
20:33throwing it a triple
20:34coverage
20:35right on the dime
20:36touchdown
20:36Brett Favre is on
20:38fire tonight
20:39and the entire
20:40country is saying
20:41can you believe
20:42what this guy is doing
20:43after what's happened
20:43in his life
20:44you bring this script
20:45to a studio
20:46and they throw it out
20:47I mean this is like
20:48fantasy
20:51everybody goes
20:52through this
20:53sadly
20:54of family member
20:54passing
20:55and everybody's
20:55got to go back
20:56to work
20:56at some point
20:57but those people
20:58who do it
20:58in their office
20:58don't do it
20:59in front of a
20:59national televised
21:00audience
21:00I was so worried
21:01that I would lay
21:02an egg in that game
21:03and I think people
21:04watching would say
21:04hey it's understandable
21:05his father just
21:06passed away
21:07I didn't want that
21:07I wanted to
21:08leave that game
21:09and be proud
21:10of the way I play
21:10and want him to say
21:11hey he played well
21:12but no one could
21:14have imagined
21:14including me
21:15that it would turn
21:15out that way
21:16America's most
21:17well known
21:18number four
21:18is thrown for
21:19four touchdown
21:20passes
21:21in one half a play
21:22what Brett Favre did
21:24got the country
21:24to fall more
21:25in love with him
21:26I can't believe
21:28he went out
21:29and did what he did
21:29there
21:30he was so sad
21:31for him
21:31but he was so
21:32damn proud of him
21:35he was one of
21:36the great athletes
21:37that could lift
21:38himself up
21:38to that
21:39this is a moment
21:40I want to treasure
21:41and I'm going to
21:42give it everything
21:43I have
21:44I knew my dad
21:44would want me to play
21:45him
21:45I didn't expect
21:46this type of performance
21:47but I know
21:47he was watching tonight
21:48it was almost
21:49divine intervention
21:50but then you just
21:51sit back and say
21:52no it's not
21:52it's Brett Favre
21:56oh by the way
21:59what was that
22:002002
22:07those were the
22:08defending AFC
22:09champion Raiders
22:10so it's not like
22:11they were some
22:12scrub team
22:17if you ask me to
22:20pick the one day
22:21I remember most
22:22of my life
22:22about Emmitt
22:22Smith
22:23it was that
22:24day
22:24the day
22:25Emmitt Smith
22:25ran for 170 yards
22:27and caught 10 balls
22:29to get most of it
22:29with one arm
22:30he was going to end up
22:31with the all-time
22:32rushing title
22:32and get the accolades
22:34Emmitt Smith
22:34has equipped Walter Payton
22:36but that day
22:37where he whipped the
22:38Giants with one
22:39shoulder
22:39the legend grew
22:40a bit
22:42in 1993
22:43Emmitt Smith
22:44and the Cowboys
22:45were trying to defend
22:46their Super Bowl title
22:47and the regular season
22:48finale was a game
22:49they desperately
22:49needed to win
22:50at stake here
22:51is the first round
22:52by and the number
22:53one seed
23:00in such a pivotal
23:01matchup
23:02the Cowboys
23:02would need
23:03their running start
23:04but soon
23:05he was one of
23:05the walking women
23:06all of a sudden
23:07I make one guy
23:07miss and I'm up
23:08the side
23:08and I'm running
23:09and Gray Jackson
23:10come up on my
23:11left side
23:11ride me down
23:12to the ground
23:13and something
23:14happened in my
23:15shoulder
23:17he should have
23:18switched hands
23:19with the ball
23:19and tried
23:20to stiff arm
23:21Smith is down
23:23at the Giants 30
23:24we knew he was hurt
23:25we obviously
23:26didn't know
23:27to the extent
23:27that they knew
23:28down on the field
23:29how badly
23:29he was hurt
23:30I love separation
23:31as they called it
23:34I bruised my sternum
23:35at the same time
23:37about seven
23:38spasms up in the neck
23:39it was a different
23:40kind of pain
23:41than I ever
23:42experienced
23:43before in my life
23:45the training staff
23:46once he hurt
23:47the shoulder
23:47told him
23:48we can't do it
23:48before you
23:49you have a choice
23:50play
23:50or no play
23:51so it's just
23:52a question of
23:52of pain
23:53and how much
23:54can you tolerate
23:55the pain was
23:56secondary
23:56the question was
23:57how do you want
23:58to football
23:59the answer
24:00by turning in
24:01our number four
24:02gutsiest performance
24:03he had one arm
24:04and he just
24:05wouldn't quit
24:06Smith for nine
24:06Smith for three
24:07Smith for eight
24:08Smith for seven
24:09these were not
24:09get him out
24:10in the open field
24:11and have him
24:12miss a tackle or two
24:13this was up the middle run
24:14there was no fear
24:15in him
24:15you have to remember
24:16this was pre-field turf
24:18when there was
24:18the old
24:19hard
24:19artificial turf
24:21things like
24:22cement
24:22and every time
24:23I got hit
24:25you can hit
24:25out of my chest
24:26that's what it
24:27sounded like
24:28I'm in the hole
24:29saying to myself
24:29no pain
24:30no pain
24:31but I'm feeling
24:32all the pain
24:35the amount of
24:37respect he won
24:37in the giants
24:38locker room
24:39that day
24:39was massive
24:41because they knew
24:42what he was going
24:43through
24:43and they were
24:44blasting him
24:45bang
24:46bang
24:46bang
24:47and he would
24:51just pick himself
24:52up
24:53go back to the
24:54huddle
24:54play call would
24:55come in
24:55and it would be
24:56deuce deuce
24:56over left tackle
24:57let's go again
24:58cowboy players
24:59they remember
25:00players telling them
25:01you don't have to
25:01do this
25:02he wouldn't hear
25:03of it
25:03you could have
25:04pleaded your case
25:05for hours
25:06and there was no way
25:07you were going to
25:07get him off the
25:08football field
25:08to watch a guy
25:09like that
25:09sacrifice himself
25:11for the betterment
25:12of his team
25:12as a former player
25:13I was just filled
25:14with admiration
25:17he goes out
25:19rushes for 168 yards
25:20totals 229 yards
25:23he was the cowboy
25:25attack that day
25:25everybody was
25:26inspired by it
25:28they get home
25:28field advantage
25:29they get a bite
25:30and it sparked a
25:31super bowl run
25:31for dance
25:34still the debate
25:35rages over
25:36smith's number
25:37four ranking
25:38I don't buy it
25:39emmett smith
25:39for my money
25:40is underrated
25:41I think emmett smith
25:42doesn't have to
25:43take the backseat
25:43to anyone
25:44they were able
25:44to win that
25:45second super bowl
25:46because of what
25:46emmett smith did
25:47that day
25:48knowing that
25:49for me
25:49it ranks that
25:50at the top
25:51of any list
25:52coming up
25:54our countdown
25:55gets downright
25:56creepy
25:56what you wonder
25:57is who was
25:58on the sidelines
25:58was it a trainer
25:59wasn't vincent price
26:00what you see
26:01the evil
26:01number three
26:02gustiest performance
26:04of all time
26:05ronnie lott
26:06shocked off his
26:07baby
26:08colonel kurtz
26:09like insanity
26:11apocalypse now
26:12ronnie lott
26:13football moment
26:14lott was the heart
26:16of darkness
26:16in san francisco's
26:18army
26:18dark ages
26:19world war one
26:20civil war
26:21picked the period
26:23he could have
26:24fought it
26:24in troy
26:26but it was this
26:27warrior's decision
26:28to amputate
26:29part of his
26:30finger
26:30that made him
26:31our third
26:32gutsiest performer
26:33ronnie lott
26:34was on anybody's
26:35all tough list
26:36before he
26:37sacrificed
26:38digit
26:38that put him
26:39over the top
26:39i don't care
26:40let me end
26:41the game
26:42in the heat
26:43of battle
26:44you're talking
26:44to a warrior
26:45oh my gosh
26:49can you be
26:50psychotic
26:51and yet
26:52under control
26:53ronnie gave me
26:54just sort of a
26:55little turned up
26:55grin and then
26:56went wow
26:58can you be
26:59neurotic
27:00and yet
27:00under control
27:01this is a guy
27:02who utterly
27:03refuses to lose
27:04he does not
27:05understand the
27:06concept of
27:07giving up
27:11i used to sit
27:12there and watch
27:12bad movies
27:13and he'd say
27:14i don't tolerate
27:15losing
27:16is that the look
27:17that i had
27:17before a game
27:18yeah that's the
27:18look i had
27:19before the game
27:19when lott put
27:20his game face
27:22on
27:22san francisco
27:23became a dynasty
27:26in his first
27:27four seasons
27:28he won two
27:29super bowl rings
27:30and the 49ers
27:32are turning
27:32super bowl 19
27:33into a roush
27:35when ronnie lott
27:36and those guys
27:36started playing
27:37they were fun
27:38to watch
27:38because they would
27:39knock the crap
27:40out of people
27:42violent
27:42non-stop
27:43relentless pursuit
27:45oh my
27:46god the steam
27:47is great
27:47is it
27:52but in 1985
27:53with the team
27:55on the way
27:55back to the
27:56playoffs
27:57lott ran
27:58into a buzzsaw
28:10when his damaged
28:12hand muffled
28:13his attack
28:13rather than risk
28:14missing a game
28:15lott had his finger
28:17chopped off
28:17losing one digit
28:19in our number three
28:20gutsiest performance
28:22well it ranks
28:23as really gross
28:24and what you wonder
28:26is who was on the
28:27sidelines
28:27was it a trainer
28:28or was it
28:28Vincent Price
28:29peel back slowly
28:30to reveal
28:31the gallows
28:32and the grotesque
28:34gross definitely
28:35I'm not gonna call
28:36anyone who's got
28:37the stones to do
28:38that insane
28:38he chopped it
28:40off himself
28:40he went in there
28:41had the buffet
28:42chopped off his
28:43finger said
28:43I'm sick of this
28:44thing being infected
28:45it's not like
28:45somebody bedded off
28:46you ask a guy
28:47today to clip
28:48his finger
28:48off the playing
28:49football
28:50he'll be like
28:51please
28:51I'll play next year
28:53I love football
28:54to death
28:54but Terrell's not
28:56cutting any fingers
28:57off the football
29:03the legend of
29:04Locke continued
29:05even without his
29:06finger
29:06he earned
29:07two more rings
29:08and our number
29:11three gutsiest
29:12performer
29:13got two thumbs up
29:14way up
29:15from the hall of
29:16fame photos
29:16his first year
29:17of eligibility
29:18whether it was
29:19a Lou Gehrig
29:20in baseball
29:21or Billy Russell
29:22you grew up
29:23reading those
29:24stories about
29:24the young
29:25intense individuals
29:26that overcame
29:27this and overcame
29:28that
29:29that was Ronnie Lott
29:30Ronnie Lott was
29:30one of those
29:31mythical sports figures
29:32hey
29:33four rings
29:35nine fingers
29:38coming up
29:39which hall of
29:40famer took it
29:41to the limit
29:41and beyond
29:42he just buried
29:43his soul
29:44number two
29:45gutsiest performance
29:46of all time
29:47Kelly Winslow
29:48conquers
29:49playoff pain
29:51nobody called
29:52Kelly Winslow
29:53soft
29:54at least they
29:55didn't call him
29:55soft twice
29:56in the early 1980s
29:58Winslow was a
29:59hall of fame
29:59tight end
30:00who redefined
30:01the position
30:02what we think
30:02of the tight end
30:03now
30:03it started
30:04with Kelly Winslow
30:05he's an inviting
30:06and talented target
30:07he was so fluid
30:08and he was so
30:09graceful
30:09but look how big
30:10he is
30:116'6
30:13255 pound
30:14could run
30:15like a wide receiver
30:16we had never
30:17seen anything
30:17like it
30:20but it was
30:21an iconic image
30:22from one of the
30:23greatest games
30:24ever played
30:25that immortalized
30:26our number two
30:27gutsiest performance
30:28everybody sees
30:29the great picture
30:30of Kelly Winslow
30:31being helped
30:32off the field
30:32I think that
30:33embodies
30:33the spirit
30:34of that game
30:35he was beyond
30:36the point of
30:37physical exhaustion
30:38and yet he just
30:39kept playing
30:39Kelly wasn't even
30:40hurt
30:41he was tired
30:43guys get tired
30:44every week
30:45but you don't
30:46put them on the list
30:46never once
30:47did anybody ever
30:48help me off the field
30:50I got my butt
30:51off the field
30:51with a broken back
30:52broken ankles
30:53I had it all
30:54but you get off
30:55the field
30:56be a man
31:00the night before
31:01the game
31:02Winslow considered
31:03the challenge
31:04of facing the
31:05Dolphins on their
31:06hot and humid
31:07home turf
31:08and I went to bed
31:09that night
31:09wondering
31:09if I've ever
31:11played in a game
31:12or done anything
31:13in my life
31:14where I gained
31:15everything that I had
31:16the heat's a huge
31:17factor
31:18it saps you
31:19and you know what
31:20I think it's more
31:20of a mental thing
31:21than a physical thing
31:22it really tests
31:23your desire
31:24at first
31:25Winslow's Chargers
31:26were not tested
31:27running up 24
31:28unanswered points
31:30Chargers looking
31:31to get more
31:31about to Winslow
31:32Winslow down
31:33to the one yard line
31:36this is too easy
31:37this is entirely
31:38too easy
31:39but it soon
31:40became a seesaw
31:41battle with
31:42Don Schoen
31:43as Dolphins
31:43Kellen Winslow
31:45makes the reception
31:46that Kellen Winslow
31:47gave as I call it
31:48Winslow was just
31:49unbelievable
31:50we couldn't stop him
31:55in a game
31:57that also featured
31:58the most total
31:58passing yards
31:59in a playoff
32:00our number two
32:01gutsiest performer
32:02grabbed an NFL
32:03record 13 catches
32:05for 166 yards
32:07throw it's to
32:08Kellen Winslow
32:09who else
32:13nobody's gonna
32:14compete like
32:15Kellen
32:15he's got the
32:16heart of the line
32:17Kellen Winslow
32:18makes the reception
32:18it was a gutsy
32:20yeah
32:20Kellen was cramping up
32:21and he was dehydrated
32:22and you know
32:23he just buried his soul
32:24that's just fatigue folks
32:26there were a couple of times
32:27our players went
32:28to help him up
32:29I said don't help him up
32:30they can use his own energy
32:31to get off the field
32:32because he'd drag himself
32:34off the field
32:34and then he'd come in
32:35and help beat us
32:36in the next series
32:38he has played every play
32:39as hard as he could
32:40Kellen Winslow
32:41with a hall of fame date
32:43but now
32:44he also blocked
32:45a field goal
32:46now he's down
32:47and out of the game
32:48despite his condition
32:49Winslow returned
32:51to block a field goal
32:52I was placed on the
32:53doodontine
32:54when the game
32:56was on the line
32:57I was the jumper
32:58and I liked that
33:00we go to overtime
33:02outstands in
33:03finally throws it
33:04here comes
33:05Kellen Winslow
33:06he got the first down
33:07that was as big a play
33:09as any
33:09it is down
33:11it is up
33:12it is good
33:13I guess I am not
33:15one given to
33:16superlatives
33:16but if you did not
33:17like this football game
33:18then you didn't like
33:19football
33:20the Chargers gave
33:21all they had today
33:22Kellen Winslow
33:22being helped off the field
33:23it was one of the
33:25great throwback
33:25performances of all time
33:27he did everything
33:28but crawl on his
33:29hands and knees
33:29to cross goal lines
33:30in that game
33:31he played overtime
33:32big deal
33:33try coming back
33:34from a knee surgery
33:34he's out
33:35who's the next one
33:36people will say
33:37well he was
33:38grandstanding at the end
33:39give me a break
33:40it would be crazy
33:41if they questioned him
33:43what Kellen Winslow
33:44did in that game
33:45defines what a
33:46football player is
33:47and it's
33:49it's BS
33:50people play
33:51people get knee
33:53injuries all the time
33:55leg injuries
33:55broken ankle
33:58broken leg
34:00cracked ribs
34:01all that stuff
34:03heat stroke
34:04is the only one
34:05on this list
34:06that will kill you
34:11coming up
34:12it killed people
34:13who
34:14weren't going
34:15for 180 yards
34:18which player
34:19breaks a leg
34:19to crack
34:20our number
34:21one spot
34:21you either have to
34:23say he's the
34:23gutsiest player
34:24of all time
34:25or the craziest
34:25player of all time
34:31jack youngblood
34:32plays on a
34:33broken leg
34:35in pro football
34:36playing with pain
34:37is a big part
34:38of the game
34:39ID ID ID
34:40paying tough
34:41former LA Ram
34:42defensive end
34:43jack youngblood
34:44went well beyond
34:45the fall of duty
34:46now that's a tough
34:47guy
34:48if there could be
34:48a logo for
34:49tough man
34:50of the NFL
34:51it's jack youngblood
34:52first of all
34:53listen to the name
34:53jack youngblood
34:54jack youngblood
34:55jack youngblood
34:59well to consider
35:00that jack youngblood
35:01played throughout
35:02the playoffs
35:02in the super bowl
35:03with a broken leg
35:04you either have to
35:05say he's the
35:05gutsiest player
35:06of all time
35:07or the craziest
35:07and I know he isn't
35:08the craziest
35:09so he's the gutsiest
35:10even today
35:11you see him
35:12at the hall of fame
35:13it does look like
35:14he could suit up
35:14and kick your ass
35:16well I'm not
35:16going to argue
35:17with jack
35:19let's start naming
35:20football players
35:21who have played
35:21in super bowls
35:22played in championship
35:23games with broken legs
35:24humbled and almost
35:25picked off by youngblood
35:26I would imagine
35:26it's a very short list
35:27and it's one of the
35:28reasons he's number
35:29one on yours
35:32jack youngblood's path
35:33to the top of our
35:34countdown began in
35:35dallas in the
35:351979 nfc
35:37divisional playoffs
35:39the guard picked me up
35:40flipped me over
35:41and the fibula
35:42snapped
35:44and you can tell
35:45youngblood is hurting
35:47trainers come out
35:48we go to the locker
35:48room and I said
35:49you need to tape
35:50this thing up
35:51he goes
35:51I'm not going to do
35:52that
35:52I said
35:52you're going to do
35:53this
35:54he gets the pictures
35:55back about that
35:55time
35:55he says
35:56see here
35:56it's broke
35:57I go
35:57I understand that
35:58I said
35:59tape it up
35:59I can still go
36:01play
36:01he was not going
36:02to be taken
36:02out of the game
36:03that was just
36:04not jack
36:04I thought it was
36:05my responsibility
36:06as the captain
36:07of the team
36:07you didn't have
36:08an opportunity
36:08to play in playoffs
36:09that many times
36:10let's go and
36:11take advantage
36:11in the biggest
36:13single upset
36:14of the season
36:15the Rams stunned
36:16the cowboys
36:17and won a weekend
36:19in Tampa Bay
36:20for the championship
36:21they're all saying
36:22you won't be ready
36:23to play
36:24and you shouldn't
36:25play anymore
36:27why
36:27I guarantee
36:28I'll be ready
36:29to play
36:29oh he was ripped
36:31he was ripped
36:32jack youngblood
36:34is the mob
36:35or man
36:35he will just
36:36whip your ass
36:37by looking at you
36:38he epitomized
36:39the tough
36:40football player
36:41the guy you see
36:42holding the helmet
36:44you know
36:44with the mud
36:45all of them
36:45if you want to be
36:46in the trenches
36:46with somebody
36:47you want to be
36:47in the trenches
36:48with jack youngblood
36:49it was a rating
36:49iskier chuck
36:50but and eric
36:50I was kind of
36:52out of jack
36:52and john wayne
36:53as the same
36:54that old swagger
36:55you know
36:56how you doing
36:56eric
36:57you know
36:57jack youngblood
36:58you just knew
36:58that john wayne
36:59was going to
36:59get the bad guy
37:01you just knew
37:02jack was going to
37:03muscle his way
37:05into the backfield
37:05sack a quarterback
37:06and make a play
37:08that really was
37:08the difference
37:09in the game
37:09he did it
37:10every single week
37:11the week after
37:12he broke his leg
37:12in dallas
37:13was no exception
37:16the rams appeared
37:17in the nfc
37:18championship game
37:21for the first time
37:22they walked
37:23inspired by the presence
37:26of captain jack youngblood
37:27playing in pain
37:29with his broken leg
37:33anybody's ever had
37:34a sprain on their leg
37:35knows how it makes it
37:37hurts to walk
37:37to stand
37:38to basically just sit
37:40and here was jack
37:41with a crack in his leg
37:42and he went out
37:43and played
37:45we've had players
37:46play with serious
37:47injuries before
37:48but to play
37:48at that level
37:49jack youngblood
37:50made this time
37:51that takes that
37:52into a whole
37:53they shut out
37:54the bucks
37:55with jack youngblood
37:57having a broken leg
37:58whole other area
38:00of athletic accomplishment
38:05but let's get
38:06let's get serious
38:06it was a non-weight
38:08bearing ball
38:08jack you've been
38:09milking this
38:10for a long time
38:10give you a lot of
38:11credit for that
38:12stand
38:12give me a break
38:13you cannot call
38:14jack youngblood
38:15a win
38:16there are some
38:16urban legends
38:17out there
38:18I don't think
38:19that's one of them
38:19because I've talked
38:20to people that
38:21were around youngblood
38:22they all believe
38:23how seriously
38:23he was hurt
38:24how has jack youngblood
38:25played on what we know
38:26is a fractured
38:27lower ankle bone
38:28I don't understand that
38:29Joe Theismann
38:30now he had a broken leg
38:31the bone was sticking out
38:32what he had was a
38:33hairline fracture
38:34where the bone was cracked
38:35you can tape that
38:37and play with that
38:38it being public
38:39I don't know that
38:40I would have made
38:40the same decision
38:41you can imagine
38:42guys taking shots
38:43at your leg
38:43that's just part
38:44of the game
38:44you're putting yourself
38:45directly in harm's way
38:47I thought he was going
38:48to stay down
38:48and he walked up
38:49and that does take
38:50a lot of bravery
38:51and a little insanity
38:53he must have had
38:54a super high tolerance
38:55for pain
38:56or just a total
38:57lack of raise
38:58to me it's
38:59it's just sick
39:00number 85
39:01jack youngblood
39:03I just saw that
39:03and I'm not surprised
39:09after the divisional round
39:11the NFC title game
39:12and the Super Bowl
39:13jack youngblood
39:14started in the Pro Bowl
39:16to cap off the number one
39:18gutsiest performance
39:19of all time
39:20every year 50 guys
39:21bail on the Pro Bowl
39:22oh my left pinky finger
39:26so sore
39:26for him to go there
39:27and play
39:28with the crack
39:29and the fibula
39:31wow
39:31mind bottom
39:32that's what it's all about
39:34under a lot of pain
39:35coming out
39:35and playing this game
39:36until the next guy
39:37comes along
39:37to dislodge
39:38I'm happy with
39:39seeing him
39:40at number one
39:41all the men
39:42on our countdown
39:43felt different
39:43kinds of pain
39:45but every one
39:46of them responded
39:47the same
39:48let me go out there
39:49let me do my job
39:49I don't want to hear it
39:50I'm not going to
39:51make an excuse
39:51don't ask me about it
39:53I'm going to
39:53play through it
39:54let's play
39:54holy mo
39:55and that
39:57I think is
39:58gutsy
39:59we were short
40:00old man
40:00but we were
40:01long old gut
