00:00Oh, yeah, take three couples. Good evening and welcome. Who love to entertain. Ask each to throw a dinner party
00:07for the other couples. I would have insisted on another one. And get them to score in secret. Grand's in
00:14the bag. Today, dancing tips. Pick it up. And romantic advice. We go separately on dates.
00:22Whoa, whoa. Hello, big boy. What are you doing tonight? Yes. As they battle it out to win a £1
00:30,000 prize.
00:47It's day one in and around Edinburgh. Home to Scotland's oldest newlyweds who were 87 and 90 on their wedding
00:54day.
00:55A bit younger, but married 18 years, are today's first hosts. Cleaning company owners, 48-year-old Michelle and 46
01:01-year-old Cameron.
01:02I would like to think that my standards are very high. I like everything to be completely precise.
01:08That doesn't look nice, does it? I'll come back to that. I don't think you'd have me any other way,
01:13really, have you?
01:15I wouldn't. No. No. We believe you. And this competitive couple are convinced they can take the £1,000 prize.
01:23So, right, can you please just make sure that's tucked right on the air? There. We're out to win.
01:28We're going to go all the way, aren't we? We have. We'll have our game faces on all night.
01:32Let's see them, then. Is that it?
01:36First up, it's their starter of smoked salmon fish cakes with a chicory and watercress salad.
01:41Fish cakes can be really, really bland.
01:45Anything but bland are our second couple Zumba-loving fiancés, 56-year-old Lindsay and 47-year-old Tara.
01:51Tara, where are you all off to?
01:52We've been together for seven years. We met when we both went to salsa dancing classes.
01:58WHISTLE BLOWS
01:59Well, his moves on the dance floor were shocking, actually.
02:02I have two left feet. I probably have three left feet.
02:07Maybe it was Lindsay's sparkling sense of humour that attracted Tara.
02:10Your jokes. Oh, my jokes. I'm legendary about my bad jokes.
02:15Let's hear one, then.
02:16How do you know if an elephant's been in your bed? There's wrinkles in the sheets and a definite smell
02:21of peanuts.
02:22I don't get that.
02:25Back to today's hosts, and Michelle is getting ready to prep the starter.
02:29At least I hope that's what she's doing.
02:31Do they snap?
02:33Oh, yeah.
02:35I put the gloves on because the smoked salmon, really, the smell of it really sticks to your fingers, and
02:41it's just not very pleasant for the rest of the evening.
02:44Oh, no-one likes a fishy finger. Michelle starts by slicing up the smoked salmon.
02:50Your favourite smell.
02:52While Cameron grates boiled potatoes.
02:54I know it's a bit tedious, but you know me.
02:57I like to do things properly.
02:58To the potato and salmon, they add chopped spring onion and beaten eggs.
03:02Stop.
03:03I do like to do things my way.
03:06I'd hate to think that I'm sort of a naggy, bossy, you know, old wife.
03:11Um, I just think, you know, sometimes Cameron needs to be put in his place.
03:15I'm a bit bigger than that.
03:16The mixture is dipped in egg and breadcrumbs, then rolled.
03:19So I'm just going to adjust them slightly.
03:21That's all right. Professional touch.
03:23Fish cake's done. They'll be cooked later tonight.
03:26Next, it's dessert.
03:28Ultimate Lemon Meringue Pie.
03:31Ultimate? I've never had Ultimate Lemon Meringue Pie.
03:34Have you had Ultimate Lemon Meringue Pie?
03:36You've got anything Ultimate?
03:38All right, share the joke.
03:40No.
03:41No? No? Oh, no?
03:43No.
03:44I'll have to sort that.
03:46Fine, don't.
03:48Our third couple of lovebirds, Leandra and Jo.
03:52Who've only been together for five months.
03:55We've never hosted a dinner party together before.
03:58We've never really cooked together.
04:00This is definitely going to be a challenge.
04:03A lot of stressful moments.
04:04Yes, yes, definitely.
04:06Back in the kitchen, it's on with the pud.
04:09Michelle starts by blind baking her homemade pastry base,
04:12then moves on to making the lemon curd.
04:14I have called it the Ultimate Lemon Meringue Pie because of the very strong lemon flavour.
04:25It's like a lemon curd, the filling, but if you bought that in the shop, I mean, it's just, you
04:31can't even compare it.
04:32It's bigging itself up to be the best lemon meringue pie on the planet, maybe.
04:40Well, Michelle can talk to the ends of the earth about it.
04:42It's also got an orange, an orange juice and zest in it, which I think gives it a real kick.
04:48You know, it really packs a punch.
04:49Yeah.
04:50Thanks, Cameron.
04:51To make the ultimate lemon curd, they combine corn flour, sugar, lemon zest and lemon and orange juice.
04:58Please grate the zest from the orange.
05:00All of it.
05:01Er...
05:02Well, can you read the instructions, my love?
05:04Woo-hoo!
05:05In go the orange zest, butter and egg yolks.
05:07Just don't get any yolk in, otherwise the meringue really will be ruined.
05:11No pressure, Cameron.
05:12The curd is set to one side and it's on to the meringue.
05:16Would you like to have a little go at making meringue?
05:18Think carefully.
05:20Right.
05:20So what you need to do is put all the egg whites in there.
05:23I am quite nervous about this.
05:25Put it on full, that's all.
05:26Keep going.
05:28Hold it up.
05:29Yeah.
05:30Turn it on for a minute.
05:31You have to turn it on once it's in the egg white, otherwise it will flick everywhere.
05:35Right, go.
05:46Stop it just now.
05:47That's it.
05:48Right.
05:49That's great.
05:49Very good.
05:50I'm going to take over and I'm going to get you to add the caster sugar when I tell you.
05:53Phew!
05:54Once he's told, Cameron adds the caster sugar.
05:59Perfecto!
06:00Agreed.
06:01OK.
06:02The lemon curd is then spread onto the pie base.
06:04You're doing a grand job there.
06:06Good plan.
06:07Praise Cameron.
06:09It's topped off with the meringue.
06:10This is going to make it the ultimate pie.
06:13You've got to do a few twirls.
06:14OK, what sort of twirls do you want and what style?
06:17Spin it round in a few places.
06:20Try and get a bit of height.
06:22No, that's...
06:22No, no, you're going to ruin it now.
06:24Taxi.
06:25Oi, that's my line.
06:27Whilst the lemon meringue pie finishes off in the oven, Michelle and Cameron get going with
06:31their main Spanish-inspired chicken and chorizo with roasted vegetables.
06:35Baked chicken and chorizo.
06:37It doesn't sound very technical.
06:39I do like the sound of that.
06:41You're keen on chicken, so that'll go down well with you, won't it?
06:44And I like chorizo as well.
06:46Chorizo?
06:47One day, we hoped to retire to Spain.
06:49The deal was for Cameron and I to learn Spanish.
06:52Well, Cameron lasted all of about two months and two, three years down the line.
06:57I am still learning Spanish.
06:59Michelle has time to do that.
07:01All right, OK, that's interesting.
07:03Oh, you're going to pay for that later.
07:05They prepare the chicken, the veg, and the chorizo.
07:09Muchas coleres con los feduras.
07:13¿Sí?
07:14Sí.
07:15Cameron no habla español.
07:17¿Prende?
07:18Sí.
07:18Oh, OK.
07:19They season the chopped vegetables, which will be roasted later with the chicken and chorizo.
07:26Perfecto.
07:27Terminado.
07:29We are out to win it.
07:31I mean, yeah, the grand at the end, that would be a nice little bonus.
07:36Just time for a quick change.
07:37Right, let's nail this thing.
07:39OK.
07:40First to arrive are Lindsay and Tara.
07:42Hi, come on in.
07:43Hi, I'm Cameron.
07:44Nice to meet you.
07:45Hi, I'm Lindsay.
07:45Cameron, glad to meet you.
07:47Going through.
07:48Hi, I'm Cameron.
07:49Very happy to meet you.
07:50Nice to meet you.
07:51And do you need to move?
07:51Tara.
07:52Tara.
07:52On you go.
07:53We could just go straight through.
07:54Anyway, cheers.
07:54Very nice to meet you.
07:55Cheers, Cameron.
07:56Michelle, very glad to meet you.
07:58Yeah, you're still a good evening.
07:59Yes, cheers.
08:00A very good evening, yes.
08:01Last in are Leandra and Joe.
08:05Hi, guys.
08:06Come on in.
08:06Hi, I'm Cameron.
08:07Hi, Cameron.
08:08Just come on in.
08:10Hello.
08:11Hi, and you are?
08:11I'm Leandra.
08:12Nice to meet you, Leandra.
08:14You too.
08:15How are you doing?
08:15Just going through.
08:17You're very welcome.
08:18And his name's Joe.
08:19Cheers.
08:20This is to a good night.
08:21Yeah, here's to a good night, guys.
08:22The first of the next three.
08:23Cheers.
08:24Cheers.
08:25Coming up, the gags start flying.
08:27What's the best dessert in the jungle?
08:30The meringue-a-tang.
08:32I'm going to buy him a joke big.
08:34And they just keep coming.
08:36Mushroom chopping is good for confined spaces.
08:41There's not mushroom.
08:42There's not mushroom for it.
08:44I have to live with this.
08:55It's night one in Edinburgh,
08:57where three couples are competing to win £1,000
08:59by throwing the best dinner party.
09:01Cheers.
09:02First hosts are Michelle and Cameron.
09:04And while they get on with their starter,
09:07new couple, Leandra and Joe, have been left alone.
09:10Fifty sheets of green.
09:12Oh, yes.
09:14A bit saucy.
09:15Don't get any ideas, you two.
09:18Meanwhile, Lindsay and Tara are checking out
09:20something in the loo.
09:22Ah, it's marathon badges.
09:23That's amazing.
09:25Yes.
09:25Very competitive.
09:26I think they're obviously a competitive couple, aren't they?
09:28I think we should be worried about this couple.
09:30You look nice, don't you?
09:33All right, moving on.
09:35If I were you, I'd actually do the salad.
09:38Place it up?
09:38Yeah, put the salads on.
09:40Are you sure?
09:41How long is that going to be?
09:42Yeah, no, definitely, like, three minutes.
09:45OK.
09:45Three minutes later, Michelle and Cameron's starter
09:48is smoked salmon fish cakes with a chicory and watercress salad.
09:51What did I tell you that I'm allergic to fish?
09:53Oh, shit!
09:55It's a bit late now, my love, I'm afraid.
10:00LAUGHTER
10:00I must also tell you that he's full of bad jokes.
10:03I like fish, but I've not eaten a lot over the last couple of months.
10:09I like things like skate and doing different things.
10:11I've done rollerblading.
10:13LAUGHTER
10:15What?
10:16What?
10:16Like I said, skate fish.
10:19Oh!
10:19Oh, right.
10:20You're so going to be fed up of him by the end of the street.
10:23I'm going to buy him a joke book.
10:25LAUGHTER
10:25You get some new material.
10:28LAUGHTER
10:28I don't really do fish.
10:31It was really nice.
10:32I thought the fish cakes were OK.
10:34I really enjoyed them.
10:35I enjoyed the starter and the salmon was, you know, really nice.
10:38I thought the ratio of potato and salmon was just right.
10:40It was all quite successful, wasn't it?
10:42Yeah, I think so.
10:42There wasn't anything left apart from a little bit of salad.
10:44No, I'm... I'm happy with that.
10:46We discovered something in your downstairs toilet.
10:49Mm-hm.
10:50And it wasn't something unpleasant.
10:55Thank goodness for that.
10:56We saw all your, um, your runners' numbers and...
11:00Mm-hm.
11:00And the medals, my love.
11:01That really impresses.
11:03We're doing a half-marathon in Madrid.
11:04And then, end of the summer, we're going off to Brussels.
11:07So it's an excuse to go away and visit a city we've not visited before
11:11and punctuate the weekend with something sensible
11:15as opposed to just going, um, as a tourist.
11:18Yeah, who wants to be a tourist on holiday?
11:20I'm Noah, Zumba fitness instructor.
11:22I've done Zumba.
11:23Have you?
11:24Yeah, no, I really enjoyed Zumba.
11:26It's absolutely brilliant.
11:27All of a sudden, the music's on and it's parties.
11:29That's it, then.
11:30Is it not a bit nuts?
11:31It is nuts, but it's brilliant.
11:33You actually go to Zumba?
11:34Well, I've actually just qualified as an instructor as well.
11:37Oh, fantastic.
11:38Oh, that's brilliant.
11:39Absolutely brilliant.
11:41There was a move.
11:41OK.
11:42Just forward and back.
11:44Like this.
11:45OK.
11:45Right, that's how it's in.
11:46Right.
11:47OK.
11:48But then, for Zumba, OK, you just pick it up.
11:51Oh, that was really good.
11:57Maybe I'll take up Zumba.
11:58Yeah.
12:00Yeah, he keeps coming out with little things, doesn't he, that he's doing that you don't expect.
12:04It's interesting because I thought initially Lindsay might be quite quiet, but he seems to be coming out of his
12:10shell.
12:10He seems quite character.
12:14You can sit down now, Lindsay.
12:16Oh, maybe a little bit of me enjoyed it.
12:19Time for the main course.
12:20Do you reckon it's the winning main?
12:22I think it looks great.
12:25Here it is, Spanish-inspired chicken and chorizo with roast vegetables.
12:29Where did your Spanish influence come from tonight?
12:31Spain.
12:33Well, Cameron and I do love everything Spanish.
12:36You know, I'm learning Spanish and we have...
12:38Hola.
12:39Hola, si, que tal.
12:41Muy bien.
12:42Oh, brilliant.
12:43Try being in French, Joe.
12:45I absolutely love chorizo and do all sorts of things with it.
12:48I would always say, say chorizo or some people say chorizo.
12:55Chorizo.
12:55Chorizo.
12:56Chorizo.
12:57I pronounce it chorizo.
12:59They were pronouncing the Z, which you don't do in Spanish.
13:03Silent.
13:05Chorizo.
13:05Chorizo.
13:06Chorizo.
13:07You can't even say it.
13:08Chorizo.
13:08What is it?
13:09What do you call it?
13:11You just said it twice differently.
13:13Yes, but how does it taste?
13:15I'm not quite sure whether it's the sort of dish you'd present to win a competition.
13:21It was okay.
13:22It was nicely laid out in a plate.
13:24It was warm enough.
13:25Gave you that kind of Spanish feel that was.
13:28It was just...
13:28I think a bit more spice, actually.
13:30So what is it that you two do?
13:32We run a commercial cleaning business together.
13:34Some of the sites we've seen have been quite revolting.
13:37So give us an example.
13:38What's a classic story?
13:40We found a few dead mice.
13:41It's that noise, isn't it, with the Henry the Hoover.
13:44Yeah.
13:44When you suck one up.
13:45As soon as Henry goes on, they know there's trouble.
13:49You know, sucking up a dead male's.
13:53Most unpleasant.
13:55Cameron's very diplomatic.
13:58Where I think Michelle just speaks her mind.
14:01And what's Michelle got to say about her dessert?
14:03The last one I made slid off easier than that.
14:07Just wait a minute, Cam, please don't touch that.
14:10I don't think I did touch it.
14:12I think you did.
14:13Michelle and Cameron's dessert is the ultimate lemon meringue pie.
14:17What's the best dessert in the jungle?
14:20Oh, no.
14:21The meringue-a-tang.
14:22Oh, quick, somebody ask a question or something.
14:25Why is it called the ultimate?
14:28It's called the ultimate lemon pie for the simple reason it's...
14:34Yes?
14:34It's, um...
14:36It's actually...
14:37In the actual lemon curd itself, it's...
14:40Yes?
14:40It's, um...
14:42I use four lemons.
14:43Four lemons?
14:44The meringue...
14:46Er, it's...
14:47It's...
14:48You don't know, do you?
14:50She doesn't know!
14:51Oh, this is the last one I've ever eaten.
14:53Oh, my God!
14:57Why did I call it the ultimate?
14:59Why didn't I just call it a lemon meringue pie?
15:03Taxes!
15:03The ultimate.
15:04The ultimate lemon meringue pie was...
15:06It was good, but the explanation of why it was called the ultimate was even better.
15:11It was brilliant.
15:12She just broke down.
15:13She couldn't call it the ultimate anymore.
15:17It was tasty.
15:18It was really tasty, really lemony,
15:20and the meringue was really crisp.
15:24Yes.
15:25Which was good.
15:25Which was good, yeah.
15:25Let's do a high five.
15:27The grand's in the bag.
15:28Yeah.
15:29Scores out of 20!
15:30Overall experience, probably about, um, 14, 15.
15:3314.
15:34Not quite the ultimate dessert.
15:36So, I think it deserves, uh...
15:3915.
15:40Brilliant evening, lovely company, nice house.
15:43Mm-hm.
15:44Food let it down a wee bit.
15:46Ultimately, we are going to give a...
15:4814.
15:5014.
15:50That gives Michelle and Cameron a total of 29 out of 40.
15:57It's day two, and it's Lindsay and Tara's turn.
15:59But after last night, the one thing that's still on everyone's mind is Lindsay's joke repertoire.
16:04Lindsay's sense of humour isn't really my sense of humour.
16:08I think I was dreaming about Lindsay, to be honest.
16:10And his jokes just get going through my head.
16:13I just don't find those jokes funny.
16:14When I first met Lindsay, um, I became very quickly aware of his bad jokes.
16:20And, uh, laughed to start off with, and then quickly regretted it.
16:24Started to cry.
16:26We're feeling your pain, Tara.
16:27First up, it's the main slow-cooked shin of beef, with potato rosti and a red wine reduction.
16:34Slow-cooked beef.
16:35Slow-cooked beef, shin of beef.
16:35That's good, it has to be just melt, you know what I mean?
16:38Fall off the fork, and that sounds really, really good.
16:41I can imagine Lindsay cooking that. I can imagine that being his choice, actually.
16:46Lindsay and Tara start with the potato rosti.
16:49What, uh, vegetable can see amazingly well?
16:53I don't know.
16:54Potato, because it's got so many eyes.
16:55So many eyes, yeah.
16:56I have to live with this.
17:02The grated potatoes are then salted and squeezed to reduce the water content.
17:06The squashed potatoes are then fried in butter before more butter gets added on top.
17:11Definitely winning.
17:12I think so.
17:13So far, so good.
17:14And with that, it's on to Lindsay's beef.
17:16Ooh, let me feel, oh, oh.
17:18Oh.
17:19He just looks like a beef man to me.
17:28OK, this is the main part of the show, the man's meat.
17:35Lindsay prepares his meat by rubbing it with butter.
17:38Lots of lovely butter with her hands.
17:40Lovely.
17:41And rub it in.
17:44Massaged meat.
17:46The shin of beef is then placed on the veg.
17:49Is it going to fit?
17:50Lindsay adds a whole bottle of red wine.
17:52Does it really take the whole bottle?
17:54Yes.
17:55Then tops it up with water and leaves on a low heat for ten hours.
18:00Next, it's on to dessert.
18:01Apple and pear crumble with homemade cinnamon ice cream.
18:05I'm not a big fan of dessert anyway.
18:08And apple and pear crumble, definitely not one of my favourites.
18:11I don't think he's going to like it.
18:13They're starting with the ice cream.
18:14The beauty about homemade ice cream is it tastes homemade.
18:18It's delicious.
18:19Lindsay combines cream and condensed milk, ready to whisk.
18:23The thing I should do with the whisking is, you know,
18:25it's involving tools, which is a man's job.
18:27Let the man go to work, Sarah.
18:30I literally am going to...
18:31I can't even go to work and...
18:35Cinnamon.
18:36I knew there was something we forgot.
18:38Might be useful in cinnamon ice cream.
18:40I think that's just about done.
18:42Soft peaks.
18:43Perfect.
18:43They spoon it into a container.
18:46Before trying the mix.
18:49That tastes good.
18:50That tastes good.
18:51So it's on to the crumble.
18:52I'm particularly partial to a good crumble.
18:56This is my course now.
18:58So they're going to make the crumble.
18:59And Lindsay has to do as he is told.
19:03Apples and pears.
19:04Right.
19:04Peel and chop.
19:05It's nice.
19:06Give me them then.
19:06They're right there, Lindsay.
19:08For the topping, Tara mixes flour and butter.
19:11Then adds sugar and cinnamon.
19:15That's it.
19:15Crumble done.
19:16They separate the apples and pears into ramekins.
19:19Why are you interfering with my pears?
19:21Oh, sorry, sorry.
19:23The fruit is then par-cooked.
19:25Before being topped with the crumble ready to be baked later.
19:29I think the apple and pear crumble and the ice cream compliment each other.
19:33Basically like us.
19:35Just like us.
19:37Oh, does your starter compliment you too?
19:39Wild mushroom tartlet with parmesan and truffle oil.
19:42I personally love mushrooms and it'll be interesting with the tartlet if they have made their own pastry.
19:49Mm-hmm.
19:50Erm.
19:51Mm-hmm.
19:52Well, actually, Tara has made her own pastry, which will later form the base of the tartlets.
19:58Bridge.
19:59For the filling, Lindsay fries onions in butter and chops mushrooms.
20:03Mushroom chopping is good for confined spaces.
20:06Oh, I think we all know what's coming here.
20:08There's not mushroom.
20:09But there's not mushroom for it, yeah?
20:11If he talks about being a fun guy, I'm leaving.
20:15The mushrooms go in the pan with flour, followed by a stock, pepper, milk and mushroom ketchup.
20:26That's tasting good.
20:28The mushroom sauce is set aside to go into the homemade pastry cases later on.
20:33I think it's absolutely vital that our guests tonight have a lot of fun.
20:36If they don't, I think we'll basically have failed as hosts.
20:39So what will you do about it?
20:41I'll overgell them with some of my wonderful jokes.
20:44Oh, God.
20:45Still feeling for you, Tara.
20:48After a very quick change...
20:50OK.
20:51It's party time.
20:51Party time.
20:52Let's go.
20:52Let's go.
20:53It's time for the guests.
20:54First to arrive, Leandra and Jo.
20:58Hi!
20:59Come in!
21:00Come in!
21:01Good day.
21:02Lovely to see you again.
21:03How are you?
21:04I'm good.
21:05How are you?
21:05Fine.
21:06Thank you so much.
21:07Come on through.
21:08Thank you very much.
21:09Hi.
21:09How are you?
21:10Oh, good.
21:10Good.
21:11Come on in.
21:12Don't take your coats off, though.
21:14To welcome their guests, they're putting them in...
21:16The Shed!
21:17Good evening and welcome.
21:19Hi.
21:19How are you?
21:20This is fabulous.
21:22Come and join the...
21:23This is so cool.
21:24Come into my tool shed.
21:26Great to see you again.
21:27How are you doing?
21:28I'm fine.
21:28How are you?
21:29Are you doing all right?
21:30Good to see you.
21:32Michelle and Cameron arrive soon after.
21:35Ooh, matching tweed.
21:37Cheers, everybody.
21:38Cheers, everyone.
21:39Nice to see you again.
21:41Here's to a good night.
21:42Welcome back, Noli.
21:43Cheers.
21:44Coming up.
21:46Things get cheeky.
21:47I do like a peach bottom.
21:49And sadly, my husband couldn't have one.
21:51But anyway, you make yourself in other ways.
21:53And you make it.
21:55And there's a host with a horn.
22:08It's night two near Edinburgh,
22:09where hosts Lindsay and Tara are putting the finishing touches to their starter.
22:13Truffle oil makes a big difference.
22:16It's a few drops on each one.
22:17Can I do this one?
22:18Yes, you have.
22:19Oh, no, too late.
22:21Here it is, a wild mushroom tartlet with Parmesan shavings and truffle oil.
22:25And some squiggles.
22:28Lovely.
22:29This evening, they're all German wines.
22:31What would you recommend, Bundy?
22:32Um, I really like the rising because it has a real depth of flavour.
22:39I think German wine gets a bad press.
22:41I think there's some good wines coming out of Germany.
22:42So hopefully this will be the proof.
22:44Yes.
22:45Yes.
22:45Well, cheers.
22:46Cheers.
22:47Here's a good night.
22:48Cheers.
22:49Thank you very much.
22:51That, sadly, is not...
22:54Very nice.
22:55No, I can't drink sweet wine.
22:57Riesling just reminds me of, um, the last bottle of wine at a party.
23:02There's nothing else to drink.
23:04And you have a glass in the morning, last in, first out.
23:09Cameron definitely didn't like the sweeter Riesling, uh, although I did warn everybody that it was quite sweet.
23:15I liked it.
23:16No, I like it.
23:17I like a sweet, fizzy wine, so...
23:19Did you make the pastry?
23:20I made the pastry.
23:21Tara did, yes.
23:22Good guess.
23:23Lovely.
23:23Baking a pastry is her domain.
23:25I actually really enjoyed the starter.
23:27The pastry was...
23:28It was actually on a par with mine, I'd say.
23:31The cross between the vinegar, the balsamic, the mushroom, it was very strong.
23:37But the mushroom tarts have a secret ingredient.
23:40I'm so sorry.
23:41No, it's fine.
23:43There's a little hair.
23:46It's my heart, look.
23:48But it's fine.
23:49It's fine, honestly.
23:51There was a hair in the kitchen.
23:52There was a hair in the kitchen.
23:52I don't know.
23:53I couldn't even see it because I haven't got my glasses on.
23:56So I don't know where it came from.
23:58The cats haven't been anywhere near the kitchen all day, so we haven't seen the cats all day.
24:03I've seen.
24:04Well, look, there it is.
24:05If I'd had a cat's hair on my tar, I wouldn't have been able to eat it.
24:10No.
24:11No, I would have insisted on another one.
24:14I'm not bothered about the wee hair in the starter and all these things happen.
24:19You know, it's just one of those things.
24:20The shaky start has Lindsay rattled.
24:22Not a single joke yet.
24:24So it's left to Joe to liven things up.
24:26I know there's something under the jacket in the corner.
24:29Whose is that?
24:30That belongs to me.
24:32Lindsay, could you bring it over and let everyone see it?
24:33I certainly shall.
24:35Do you still play?
24:36I do.
24:36My brass band, we were very lucky enough to come fourth in the Scottish Championships.
24:41Are you going to give us a little demonstration?
24:43I was wondering whether somebody round the table would like to have a go.
24:47LAUGHTER
24:48I think Michelle should have been so fast.
24:51Sit it on your knees.
24:53OK.
24:54So you take a deep breath, put your lips to the mouthpiece.
24:57I think the mouthpiece is clean.
24:58It is.
24:59And you just blow a raspberry.
25:02Basically, if you're blowing a raspberry.
25:04BOOM!
25:08It was really quite remarkable that Michelle managed to get such a loud noise out of the instrument straight away.
25:16Yes, who'd have thought it?
25:18BOOM!
25:20BOOM!
25:21BOOM!
25:22BOOM!
25:24BOOM!
25:25That's enough of that.
25:26Let's hear it, maestro.
25:28BOOM!
25:31I think you might have to be a bit crazy to play a tube.
25:34Possibly.
25:35BOOM!
25:36BOOM!
25:37APPLAUSE
25:38Tuba time over.
25:40Lindsay's taking the main course very seriously.
25:43I'm busy boiling up some German red wine to form the base of the gravy.
25:47At least Cameron won't have to drink it.
25:49I really miss Lindsay's juxtaposition.
25:51Yes, me too.
25:52I think maybe it's pressure.
25:54He's reined them back in.
25:56Are they supposed to be that colour?
25:57Not burnt, that's the way that it's supposed to look.
26:00Right.
26:00Time for a last-minute check for cat hairs.
26:03Can't see any hairs.
26:05That's good.
26:06But then I'm steaming up.
26:08You're steaming up.
26:10So I'm not going to see anything when I'm steaming up, are I?
26:14Woo!
26:16It's all cloudy here.
26:18And here it is, slow-cooked shin of beef, potato rosti and a red wine reduction.
26:23So remind me, this is shin of beef, was that right?
26:25No.
26:27And how long have you been roasting it for?
26:30This has been cooking for about ten hours.
26:33The beef was outstanding.
26:35It was soft, succulent.
26:37It had a lovely gravy.
26:39The flavour was very nice, but I did find it a bit tough.
26:43And the roasted potato, how have you cooked that?
26:47Just pan-fried it.
26:49And what sort of oil do you use?
26:51I use butter.
26:52Oh, right.
26:52That's OK.
26:53And a knob of butter on the top.
26:55I had a bite and all I could taste was just butter.
26:58Mm.
26:59Salted butter.
27:00I just couldn't, no, I didn't enjoy that at all.
27:03It was quite nice the fact that the main course didn't live up to the starter.
27:06Got her eye on the prize.
27:07I've already spent my 500 quid.
27:09I know, is that what I'm buying?
27:11Yeah.
27:12So how many dinner parties have you thrown, a pair of you?
27:15We've not actually thrown any dinner parties for anyone yet.
27:18So you are guinea pigs tomorrow.
27:20So we don't lose any friends.
27:24Right, so what you're saying is that we're not yet your friends.
27:29Oh, OK.
27:31So how long have you two been together?
27:33We've been together just over five months now.
27:36Oh, that's lovely.
27:37Nice and fresh.
27:39Oh, fresh.
27:40Fresh.
27:40We're all friends.
27:41Fresh.
27:43Not like you all run down.
27:46So do you think that you've discovered everything about each other yet?
27:49You know, we haven't been on holiday properly together and stuff,
27:51so, you know, I think there's a lot more stuff.
27:53And then the horrors are going to start coming out of the woodwork, aren't they?
27:57You remember what it was like at the beginning.
27:59It's lovely, isn't it?
28:00It is, but I...
28:01You can't keep your hands off each other.
28:03No, I think...
28:03It goes out the window after.
28:0723 years!
28:15How did you get together?
28:17How did you...
28:18Well, we got together through salsa dancing.
28:21Tara was a fellow pupil and became friends.
28:24Over a while, started to, I guess, notice a bit more about each other, didn't we?
28:29Yeah, especially your bottom.
28:32What's it about his bottom?
28:34It's just peachy and lovely.
28:36Nice!
28:37It's so like a peachy bottom.
28:39Yeah!
28:39Yeah!
28:39It's just in the hand.
28:41Yeah, it's just...
28:42You've got to sit.
28:43Yeah.
28:43Just do it all.
28:44Oh, no, it's only got a flat bottom.
28:46My bottom is unfortunately quite flat.
28:48I do like a peachy bottom.
28:50And sadly, my husband doesn't have one.
28:52But anyway, he makes up in other ways than you might see.
28:56LAUGHTER
28:58Honestly.
28:58I think we need to see this peachy bottom.
29:00Do you?
29:01Oh, no.
29:01Do you really?
29:02Yes.
29:03Come on, let's see the peachy bottom.
29:06LAUGHTER
29:09I'm not even trying to look.
29:10Oh, you've missed a couple of belt loops there.
29:12There's definitely a lack of gags from Lindsay tonight, isn't there?
29:15But he did show us his peachy bottom.
29:17He did.
29:18That made up for the gags.
29:20In actual fact, it was a lot more interesting than the gags.
29:23Yeah.
29:24Maybe to you.
29:25It's time for dessert.
29:27Thankfully not peaches.
29:29Lindsay and Tara are serving apple and pear crumble
29:32with cinnamon ice cream.
29:34So, remind me, is it...
29:35It was cinnamon.
29:36Cinnamon ice cream, wasn't it?
29:37Yes.
29:38It's possibly the world's easiest ice cream to make.
29:43Maybe you shouldn't be telling us that.
29:45I know.
29:45Maybe you've got to pretend, don't you?
29:46Yeah, it's really very hard.
29:47Lindsay, I think we've noticed a wee lack of your jokes this evening.
29:53Oh, are you...
29:54What's happened?
29:54Are you missing my goodness?
29:56Yes.
29:56Come on, I'm sure you've got one for us.
29:59Knock, knock.
30:00Who's there?
30:01Felix.
30:02Felix who?
30:03Felix, my l'oreal.
30:04I'll smash his face.
30:06Felix what?
30:09I didn't get that.
30:10I didn't get it.
30:10Are you sure you've missed his jokes?
30:12Taxes!
30:13I didn't like the ice cream.
30:15I thought it was far too rich.
30:17I was a little bit worried about the apple and pear crumble
30:20because usually, you know, it can be quite sour.
30:24But it was actually OK.
30:25There's always things you could have improved on.
30:27I could have improved on.
30:29We could have improved on.
30:30I was just about to say that it was just aimed at me.
30:34All of yours was perfect.
30:35One, I should have said one.
30:36All of yours was perfect and mine was all rubbish.
30:39There are always things one could have improved on.
30:41They created a great atmosphere but their food let them down a little bit.
30:45So we're going to give them a 14.
30:48We really loved the starter but the rest of the meal didn't deliver.
30:52So we score a 10.
30:55That gives Lindsay and Tara a not-so-humorous 24 out of 40.
31:01It's the final day and the turn of Leandra and Joe
31:04who've never thrown a dinner party together
31:06and the nerves are kicking in.
31:08I'm a little apprehensive only because, you know,
31:11we've never done this before and never cooked together.
31:15It could go terribly wrong.
31:16I know.
31:17This could be the end.
31:18Yeah.
31:19Make or break.
31:20Make or break, yeah.
31:21On telly.
31:22Can't wait for tonight.
31:23Doing Leandra tonight, yeah.
31:25Feel really apprehensive for them because it's the first time
31:28they've ever given a dinner party together.
31:30But competitive couple Michelle and Cameron are worried
31:33about whether Joe poses them a threat.
31:35I mean, he might be an absolute amazing chef.
31:38I've no idea.
31:39I think Joe might be a bit of a bandit.
31:41What?
31:42If we don't win, it's your fault.
31:45It's not.
31:46First up, dessert.
31:48Lemon and lime cream pie.
31:50At least it's our ultimate lemon and lime cream pie.
31:52That's true.
31:53That's true.
31:53Is the base going to be crushed digestive biscuits or is it going
31:58to be something a little bit more interesting than that?
32:03Actually, it is more interesting.
32:05Chocolate digestives.
32:07Leandra adds lemon, lime juice and condensed milk to cream.
32:12Yeah, a little bit more, baby.
32:13Then whisks.
32:14I'm panicking a little bit just because of time because I realised
32:17how much we have to do.
32:18Don't worry, Annie.
32:19We'll be fine.
32:20Absolutely fine.
32:20Everything's cool.
32:22Leandra adds lemon and lime zest to the cream,
32:24whilst Joe pours butter onto the biscuit base,
32:28which is then baked before adding the topping.
32:31You have to taste this.
32:38That's good.
32:39It's left to set until serving tonight.
32:42Next up, a starter of Japanese fish cakes
32:44with a prawn and lemongrass soup.
32:46OK.
32:48Wow.
32:49That sounds delicious.
32:51Yeah.
32:52Getting worried, Michelle.
32:53They start with a kiss.
32:55Then they make the lemongrass and prawn soup.
32:58Leave it to simmer vigorously and it's on to the fish cakes.
33:01We had fish cakes already.
33:03Yes.
33:03And although those were lovely,
33:05I think there's going to be a different element to this.
33:08Leandra starts by checking tinned salmon for bones,
33:12whilst Joe chops ginger and adds it to coriander and Chinese five spice.
33:17Don't even look at your one.
33:19Swap.
33:19I'll do that.
33:20No, it's done.
33:21It's done.
33:21That's it.
33:22No, wait.
33:22I am double checking.
33:23No, I am double checking.
33:24You're squishing it all.
33:25Oh, trouble in paradise.
33:27The salmon goes in with flour and boiling the bag right.
33:31Hoo-yah!
33:32Hoo-yah!
33:33What I'm noticing as you do, you get a little bit stressed.
33:37I do.
33:38Like everybody.
33:39You're quite bossy.
33:40Or firm, maybe, as well.
33:41Definitely.
33:42I can see that.
33:43You're like giving me the eyes.
33:45Don't stir any more, you're killing it.
33:49Nothing like making fish cakes to start learning about each other.
33:52The mixture is then placed into cases.
33:55I love you.
33:58Right.
33:59That's not the reaction you'd normally want.
34:01Oh.
34:02The moulded cakes are then left to cook later.
34:05Finally, it's the main of marinated fillet of beef with egg noodles.
34:08I love fillet of beef.
34:10Yes.
34:10Yes.
34:11That's a winner for me, I think.
34:13Yeah.
34:14To actually cook sort of Thai food, I'd say you'd have to be quite a confident chef.
34:20So I'm even more worried now.
34:22Joe starts by preparing the beef, while Leandra makes the marinade.
34:26Put another three spoonfuls in there.
34:30To the soy sauce, the soup chef adds Chinese five-spice and powdered ginger.
34:35Leandra then adds honey and stirs.
34:37Just give it a mix, and then take a little taste.
34:47It seems like eating marinade, but that's wrong.
34:50Funny, that.
34:53That's fine.
34:54Yeah.
34:54It's all gone.
34:56The beef is then added to the marinade, and will be cooked with the noodles later.
35:01Finally, there's just time for a quick change.
35:04OK, good luck.
35:05Yeah.
35:05Good luck, baby.
35:06I'll be fine.
35:07Right, stop that.
35:08Your guests are here.
35:08I'll go and get the door.
35:10I would.
35:11First in, the couple to beat, Michelle and Cameron.
35:13Hello.
35:14Hello.
35:14You look lovely.
35:16See you again.
35:16Aw, you two.
35:17Aw, you look brilliant.
35:19Yeah, how are you?
35:20Very well indeed.
35:21Good.
35:22Just go through.
35:23Last, it's Lindsay and Tara.
35:25Hello.
35:25How are you?
35:26How are you?
35:27You looking smart tonight?
35:28Thank you very much.
35:29Good.
35:29Thank you very much.
35:30Hello.
35:31How's your day been?
35:32And are the jokes going to come back tonight?
35:34We'll have to wait and see.
35:36Oh, good.
35:37Fingers crossed, eh, Cameron?
35:39Cheers, everybody.
35:40I really hope you enjoy tonight.
35:42I'm looking forward to it.
35:44Coming up...
35:45Definitely him.
35:46..a boy band bombshell.
35:49You are a special kind of girl.
35:52Brilliant.
35:52Don't lose the day job.
35:55And the winners are revealed...
36:07It's the final night near Edinburgh.
36:09Cheers, everybody.
36:11...where dinner party virgins Leandra and Joe are battling it out to win £1,000.
36:16While the hosts get to work on the starter...
36:18Oh, my gosh.
36:19What was this?
36:20...Tara and Michelle have a nosy.
36:22I mean, straight away you recognise Joe there.
36:25Is it?
36:25There.
36:26It's definitely him.
36:27It looks like him.
36:28Isn't it?
36:29Is that a boy band?
36:32I wonder whether Joe is standing and the other guys are...
36:36No, next to him's Neely.
36:38LAUGHTER
36:40With the girls away, Cameron and Lindsay are in party mode.
36:43It's great to know that small shops are able to survive in some areas.
36:46I know, I know.
36:47Very important.
36:48Yeah.
36:49Yeah.
36:51Tell him a joke, Lindsay.
36:53Or you could just stare at him.
36:55How's that food getting on?
36:57Did you get me that wee plastic spoon, baby, earlier on?
36:59I did.
37:00I knew there was a reason I loved you.
37:02Well, that is romantic.
37:04Good, good, and that's brilliant.
37:06Leandra and Joe's starter is Japanese fish cakes
37:09with chilli jam and a prawn and lemongrass soup.
37:13What's in the fish cake?
37:14Fish!
37:15The fish cake is salmon and rice.
37:17It's got ginger, garlic...
37:19Mm-hm.
37:20Coriander.
37:21Coriander.
37:21Really like the fish cakes, but not so sure about the soup.
37:25I just didn't really like the consistency.
37:28How is your fish cake?
37:29Oh, the fish cake's lovely.
37:30Resort cake?
37:31Yes, really, really nice.
37:32Fish cakes for the second time running this week,
37:35and then a prawn soup.
37:36Oh, God.
37:37I could have just had a whole bowl of that.
37:39I've spent quite a bit of time in Japan.
37:41I was wondering about the Japanese fish cakes
37:43because I haven't actually had fish cakes in Japan.
37:47It's just a little bit there, so I'll go,
37:49well, that's quite nice.
37:50I'll try that with that.
37:51So not Japanese at all?
37:52I actually thought it was Japanese fish cake.
37:55Oh, did you?
37:55Have you just named it?
37:57Japanese fish cake?
37:58Brilliant.
38:01I need to ask something, Joe.
38:04Yeah.
38:04Can you explain this to us?
38:09Oh, my boy band days.
38:11That was, God, that's about 18, 19 years ago.
38:14I wonder why we never made it.
38:15I was going to say, I wonder you didn't go too far.
38:18How do you know?
38:19Have you heard any of your songs?
38:20No, I have not, no.
38:21Are we going to hear some of your songs?
38:23No, certainly not.
38:24You must remember one of your songs.
38:25The breakout hit.
38:27Give us a line.
38:28Oh, no.
38:28Just keep it short.
38:30You are a special kind of girl.
38:33That's it.
38:36This is certainly not the platform for getting the band back together.
38:41Absolutely not.
38:42I think basically the phrase is, don't lose the day job.
38:45Nearly.
38:46So, Joe, would you like Tara to take that?
38:49Oh, I think that might have been a joke.
38:51Oh, very good.
38:52Hey!
38:53It was a joke!
38:54Yes.
38:55On to the main course.
38:56And Joe might have overstretched himself.
38:58Too much to do.
38:59What?
39:00Oh.
39:00Right.
39:01Right.
39:01Baby, can you just try and put...
39:04You want me to put the noodles in?
39:06It's a little bit stressful, you know?
39:08What?
39:09What?
39:09What am I doing?
39:10Oh, ****.
39:11It's OK.
39:15Noodles in this, that's it.
39:18In my head, this went a lot better.
39:20I've just seen it very stressed out.
39:22I actually feel really sorry for you.
39:25Because I know exactly.
39:26I feel your pain.
39:27Leandra and Joe's mane is marinated filleted beef with egg noodles.
39:31And some pak choy, look.
39:32Now, I need to ask you, have you made these noodles?
39:35Do you know what?
39:36I knew you were going to ask me.
39:38And the answer was...
39:39Because when I saw noodles there, I thought,
39:41my God, if this boy's made these noodles, I will be...
39:44You wouldn't believe what I've went through.
39:47Have you made them?
39:48No.
39:52There was a long wait for the main course, in absolute honesty.
39:55I really don't know why.
39:57Fair enough if he had made the noodles.
39:59Anybody being even asked to try and make their own noodles,
40:02that's a...
40:03No, that would...
40:04A step too far.
40:05No.
40:05There are a lot of them,
40:06so you might say there's oodles of noodles.
40:08Or you might not.
40:09Oh, yeah.
40:11I'm not a big noodles fan,
40:12but I thought the steak was absolutely delicious.
40:15I just didn't have enough of it.
40:16The beef itself was lovely.
40:18It was sweet and it had a lot of depth of flavour.
40:20At the table, talk turns to keeping the romance alive.
40:24We go separately on dates.
40:26We go...
40:26We go...
40:27We leave the house...
40:28Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa!
40:30Hang on.
40:31Who never was?
40:34I...
40:35I go on dates with a girl called Mandy.
40:38Yeah.
40:39You can tell that they have probably quite a good physical relationship.
40:45Hmm.
40:48Erm...
40:48I'm not sure whether that's really appropriate, Michelle.
40:51What we do is we'll leave the house separately.
40:54And Lindsay will leave before me
40:56and we will arrange to meet up in whatever bar or restaurant
41:01at a certain time
41:02and we will go and we will have a proper date.
41:05I think we can learn a bit
41:09because of the amount of time that they've been together
41:11and still how happy they are as a couple,
41:15so they must be doing something right.
41:17When I turn up, I do tend to go up to you,
41:21give you a kiss and...
41:24And say, hello, big boy, what are you doing tonight?
41:26Yes.
41:27Well, thanks for sharing.
41:28Would you do something like that?
41:29Would...
41:29Have you done something like that?
41:31I think we're going to now.
41:32Yeah.
41:33That's a very good idea.
41:34That's a very good idea.
41:34I'd like you to...
41:35to book a hotel, actually.
41:37Ooh.
41:38Yes.
41:39What, now?
41:40Now?
41:42Now yourself.
41:43You know, it's like a sort of a blind date.
41:46It's like a dangerous liaison, isn't it?
41:46Yeah.
41:47What's that film you saw?
41:49Dangerously is all.
41:50Makes you feel all lovey-dovey yourself, as well.
41:52To make the bloody most of it, guys.
41:54Yeah, yeah, yeah.
41:55It's just all down hell from now.
41:56It doesn't.
41:57With the main course of it hit and miss,
41:59can Leandra and Jo pull it back with the pudding?
42:03Check that.
42:04They're finishing with a lemon and lime pie.
42:08So, what does everybody think?
42:09Lovely.
42:10It's going down very nicely.
42:11Very lovely.
42:12And I love the chocolate buttons and the scars.
42:15Have you made those?
42:16I don't know.
42:17Oh, no.
42:18I don't know.
42:19But...
42:19Leandra picked to do with the stars, actually.
42:23I made them into this pattern.
42:23Yeah, very good.
42:24Cool.
42:25The desire, it was, it was, it was good.
42:28It was, it was actually very nice.
42:30But it was quite a simple cheesecake, really.
42:32It was tasty.
42:33It was tasty.
42:33It was good.
42:34It was really tasty.
42:35Yeah.
42:35It was very, very tasty.
42:36It was really tasty.
42:37Yeah.
42:38Was it tasty, though?
42:39Leandra, you're a star.
42:41Thank you very much.
42:43Honestly, it's so cheesy.
42:46It's not cheese cake.
42:52Oh, dear.
42:53When he told that first joke at my house, I thought, oh, my God.
42:56Yeah.
42:56But by day three, I don't know, it just...
42:59I think we've just accepted it.
43:00I would not have him any other way now.
43:03It'll all be over soon, don't it?
43:05Yes, please make it stop!
43:06It's become less and less about winning and more and more about getting to know these people.
43:12Still be nice to win, Cam.
43:13Hm.
43:14What do you just have to wait and see?
43:15Still be nice to win, Cam.
43:17Mm-hm.
43:20Maybe, maybe 15?
43:21What do you think?
43:22No, I think it was a little bit better than the first night, so I think that maybe a 16.
43:26I hope we have pulled it back.
43:29Yeah.
43:29Yeah, I do.
43:31Me, too.
43:32Me, too.
43:32Me, too.
43:33Leandra and Joe need 30 or more to take the £1,000 prize from Cameron and Michelle.
43:39It started needing more seasoning.
43:41The main needed more sauce, but they really pulled it out of the bag with the dessert,
43:44so we'll give them a...
43:4516.
43:46Great effort for their first time hosting a dinner party.
43:50But the food was a little simple in places.
43:53That's all.
43:54So we're going to score them.
43:55Whoa there!
43:57It's the final house job to reveal the winners.
43:59Yay!
44:01Here we go.
44:02Here we go.
44:03Here we go.
44:04Ladies and gentlemen, the results.
44:10Here we go.
44:11Are we ready?
44:13In third place, we have...
44:18Lindsay and Tara!
44:20CHEERING
44:21So it's between us and Michelle and Cameron.
44:27Ooh!
44:28In second place, it's Cameron and Michelle.
44:33CHEERING
44:36Which means we're the winners.
44:39With a score of 14 from Cameron and Michelle, Leandra and Joe win by a point.
44:45I mean, we're competitive, but we're not that competitive.
44:48I mean, you know, the best people won.
44:50You know?
44:51That happened.
44:53CHEERING
44:55I can't believe it.
44:56Yeah.
44:57Our first dinner party.
44:59And...
44:59Yeah, we've won.
45:01CHEERING

45:08I think when it comes to jokes, I don't know if...
45:10Maybe that went against us as well.
45:12Yes, I never thought about that.
45:14The Joker.
45:17The Joker.
45:20The Joker.
45:21There's always a Joker that's a rule, but fate deals a hand and I see.

45:32The Joker is me.
45:35The Joker.
45:35The Joker is me.
