00:41Now this is the type of luxury villa I love to see.
00:44I know it's something really really special.
00:47But at the end of the day do I find my house hunters their perfect place in the sun?
00:51It's just what we've been looking for.
00:54It's... it's...
00:59Shirley and Ken first met when they were just a sweet 16.
01:03And now 52 plus years later they've worked hard, raised two children and travelled the world together.
01:08They visited Cyprus two years ago and fell in love with Famagusta as well as the Cypriot people, great food
01:15and lovely weather.
01:16It's no surprise then that they've chosen here to make their dream holiday home a reality for them and the
01:22whole family.
01:24Ken and Shirley first met outside a youth club in their home town of York.
01:29He gave me a lift home one night when I was stood at the bus stop and he stopped the
01:34car, would you like a lift?
01:36And that was the beginning of a wonderful relationship.
01:40Although they only recently discovered Cyprus, they've quickly become huge fans of the eastern part of the island.
01:46That whole area around Ayanape, the whole seafront, the people, the water's clear, there's warmth, the restaurants, everything's just about
01:58right.
01:59You can wander to and fro with ease. So it's a lovely area.
02:03They have a budget of £165,000 to buy a holiday home for them and their family.
02:10The best way to get to Famagusta on the east coast of Cyprus is to fly into Lanarka International Airport,
02:17which takes about three hours from the UK.
02:19Then it's just over half an hour's drive.
02:22The Famagusta district is best known for the famous party town of Ayanape.
02:27But if clubs and banging tunes aren't your thing, there are loads of more relaxed places to visit and stay.
02:33It's got fantastic beaches, popular with snorkelers as well as sunbathers.
02:38Plus there are tons of historical sites to visit. This part of the island dates back to 274 BC.
02:46Property prices across Cyprus are on the up, with houses rising by 9% and apartments by 12% in
02:53the past year.
02:54The city of Limassol is the most expensive area to buy in, but the best value for money is around
02:59Famagusta.
03:00So there should be some great options for Shirley and Ken.
03:03Before we get going, I'm meeting up with my house hunters on a slightly windswept beach to find out a
03:09bit more about them
03:09and what they're looking for in terms of property.

03:19There's a difference between going on holiday and actually having a property here in Cyprus.
03:24So what made you make that decision?
03:26Well, I lost my sister at Christmas.
03:28Oh, I'm sorry.
03:29And it just made us realise how short life is and we're both retired.
03:34The time is right now for us.
03:37Good for you.
03:38Yeah.
03:38If you've got a goal in life, then you should really do your best to get there and do it
03:43as soon as you can.

04:06I had neck surgery a few years ago.

04:09And I've got nerve damage now that affects both arms and both legs.

04:21Obviously, being in the water always helps with mobility and bones and things like that.

04:29So what kind of properties would you like to look at?
04:32It would be nice for a bungalow, but apartments would be nice.

04:38No problem whatsoever.

04:40So what kind of areas do you like?
04:41Anything, you know, around this area because this is the area we really like.

04:46And who will be coming and using this property with you?
04:49Well, we've got two boys, three grandchildren, two boys and a girl.

04:53They've all learnt to swim, so this is going to be absolutely amazing for them.
04:57So the budget then.

05:18There are loads of suitable properties round here for Shirley and Ken and their maximum budget of £175,000 will
05:25give me some great options for them and their family, particularly those grandkids.
05:30Now, you can't visit this part of Cyprus without checking out the world-renowned party town of Iyanapa.
05:36And as I imagine the clubbers are still tucked up in bed now, I thought we'd pay a visit to
05:41its lovely marina.
05:42Before we go to my first property, I wanted to bring you to Iyanapa Marina.
05:46You can see all these boats here.
05:48Take an excursion to the Blue Lagoon for about €15 and it is stunning.
05:52Absolutely fantastic.
05:54Have you been before?
05:55Yeah, we've had a boat ride.
05:56What did you see when you were out on your boat trip?
05:58Not a lot.
06:00There's so few fish, but it was still a wonderful trip.

06:03So you can get out on the seas when you're back on the land.
06:06There are some amazing restaurants round here.

06:11I thought this was a great area to start off in and one that I'm sure you'll visit lots once

06:17And my first property is not too far away.
06:19It's about a 20-minute drive from here.

06:22How are you feeling about seeing your first place?

06:27That 20-minute drive takes us to the village of Caparis, a small, laid-back holiday destination with a large
06:34number of year-round residents.
06:36Even though we're right by the coast here, it's still a fairly affordable area.
06:41And I've managed to find Ken and Shirley an apartment on a great development for quite a bit below their
06:47budget.
06:48I've started off with a complex for you two.
06:51It looks nice and new and modern and well looked after.
06:55It's the first complex we've looked at, so it's going to be amazing.

06:59Oh, yes, yes.

07:00OK, that's quite exciting.
07:01So, if you look up there, second floor, two-bedroom, one-bathroom apartment that looks down over this pool.

07:11I think it's great when they do the maintenance sort of off-season because it means everything's ready for the
07:15summer.
07:16I can see where everybody will be most of the day.
07:18Wow.
07:19And just to sort out the logistics, the parking space down here and then you get a lift up to
07:24the property there.

07:27It's about a ten-minute walk from the main street in Caparis and you've got a small local beach about
07:31five minutes from here.

07:33Now, this property is on the market for just over £141,500.

07:41I guess she's spending money for renting your boat.
07:44Of course it does.
07:45We need a car, so, I mean, that's got the car.

07:50This second-floor apartment has a balcony overlooking the currently empty communal pool.
07:55Inside, there's a light and bright open-plan living, dining and kitchen area, the main bedroom, a second bedroom and

08:10And we'd get six round that table if we pulled it out and then folding chairs either end and that'd

12:02But before we go there, I thought we'd make a quick stop off at the lovely chapel at Ayathekla,
12:07one of my favourite places on this side of the island.
12:10I brought you to this spot because I think it's a good place to see old Cyprus at the chapel
12:16of Ayathekla.

12:20What do you think of that, the blue and white?
12:22That's typical Greek colours, isn't it?
12:24Just behind us, we've got the brand new Ayathekla Marina, which has some multi-million pound apartments in it.
12:30And I love that kind of contrast.
12:31Another reason I brought you here is because of these beaches.
12:34They're perfect for families.
12:36They're manned by lifeguards in the spring and the summer and autumn.
12:39I'm always thinking about accessibility for you as well.
12:42You can easily park there, have a little picnic on the beach with the kids,
12:45and then force them to take in a bit of history as well here.

13:37And I've gotten off to a good start. I've bagged myself a great contender.
13:41My house hunters, who have a budget of £165,000 with an additional £10,000 wiggle room, really like the
13:49location and the interior of this second-floor apartment.
13:52But they felt its balcony was a bit on the small side. So now I've got to find them somewhere
13:57with more outside space.
14:00And I've definitely done that with my next place, which is on the outskirts of the village of Afgoru.
14:06We're quite far inland here. The nearest beach is about a 20-minute drive away.
14:10And it's more of a residential town than a holiday resort, which does mean everything's open here all year round.
14:17And it's also a very affordable area, meaning I've been able to find Shirley and Ken a bungalow with loads
14:23of inside and outside space for well within budget.
14:27Right, have you been to Afgoru before? No, never been.
14:30It's really nice. The village feels quite lovely in Greek, restaurants and bars, a place where you can go and
14:35sort of mix with people.
14:36That's a bit of everything here. A walking distance to the village centre?
14:39The village centre is about a mile from here. It's not a great walk, I'll be honest. Five minutes in
14:45the car?
14:46Yeah, I know. OK.
14:48So what I've got for you here is a two-bedroom, one-bathroom, spacious, semi-detached bungalow.
14:53Right. Right. Semi-detached.
14:58Yeah, not the ideal. It'll have to be really super-duper for us to consider it.
15:04This property is on the market for just over £132,500. That's a good price.
15:09Right, it is, yeah. It is well within your budget. Yeah.
15:12And this comes furnished. Well, does it need any work doing to it?

16:51Now, even though my house hunters are only looking for a holiday home in Cyprus, they are planning to spend
16:56a lot of time out here.
16:58So I thought I'd introduce them to someone who knows this area like the back of her hand,
17:02and can give Shirley some good advice on living life out here with mobility issues.

17:25I had an accident about 11 years ago, and I found that it's really been beneficial for me.

17:34Most of the restaurants, certainly the offices, government offices, banks, everything's with ramps.
17:43So we don't have to worry about steps and things.

17:46We've got a fabulous medical system here.
17:50The doctors are of a very high standard.

19:07And I reckon they'll like my next place just as much.
19:10It's back in the village of Afgoru where we saw our last place, but this time we're much closer to
19:16the centre.
19:17I've managed to find a detached bungalow rather than the semi-detached that didn't go down too well.
19:22And in this very affordable part of the island, it's priced just below their budget.
19:27Right, for my third property, I'm sticking with Afgoru because I think Afgoru deserves a second chance.

26:17And do you know why they call it Fireman's Beach?
26:19They certainly do.
26:20Some mornings they get the Fireman go down on the beach and they test their hoses out and spray the
26:25water all over the beach.
26:26And do you know, Shirley, I've never been lucky enough to witness that.

26:32This is a lovely beach.
26:34You come, bring a cool box, hang out for the whole day.

27:19managed to find Shirley and Ken a great apartment for quite a bit below budget.
27:24So what I've got here is a second floor, two bedroom, one bathroom apartment.
