Olga, Masha and Irina Prozoroff lead lonely and purposeless lives following the death of their father who had commanded the local army post. Olga attempts to find satisfaction in teaching but secretly longs for a home and family. Masha, unhappy with her marriage to a timid schoolmaster, falls hopelessly in love with married Colonel Vershinin. Irina works in the local telegraph office, but longs for gaiety. Their sense of futility is increased by their brother's marriage to Natasha, a coarse peasant girl. She gradually encroaches on the family home until even the private refuge of the sisters is destroyed. They dream of starting a new life in Moscow but are saddled with the practicalities of their quiet existence. Despite their failures, they resolve to seek some purpose and hope when the army post is withdrawn from the town. Starring: Joan Plowright, Jeanne Watts, Louise Purnell, Derek Jacobi, Alan Bates, Laurence Olivier.

00:07:17I must be quite disheveled.
00:07:47Why, you keep that old woman here.
00:07:49Oh, you're so rude.
00:08:45I simply can't bear it.
00:09:44Why, you're in this house.
00:10:14It's dying down.
00:10:20Can you hear him.
00:11:55Maybe I'm not a man.
00:12:24at all.
00:13:09last evening.
00:16:06Yes, I heard you.
00:16:42I love you.
00:24:21You're sad.
00:30:43enough.
00:31:25thank you.
00:38:11I love you.
00:38:15Do you hear me.
00:39:40Don't believe me.
00:40:09Don't believe me.
00:40:23It's only a rumor.
00:40:53We'll be left.
00:41:25I implore you.
00:54:02here.
00:58:53You will go.
00:59:26I love you.
01:00:03tomorrow, my boy.
01:00:09tomorrow, I go away.
01:03:25I'll be back.
01:03:33I'll take you.
01:04:04I'll take you away.
01:09:46Thank you, please.
01:10:30would choose. I didn't want to be a headmistress and yet I am one now. And it
01:10:38means we won't be living in Moscow.
01:10:46Well
01:10:51thank you again for everything.
01:10:54Forgive me if I've done anything wrong. I know I've talked too much so forgive me
01:11:01for that too. And don't think too badly of me. Why have Marsha taken such a time? What
01:11:09more can I say in farewell? What can I philosophize about now?
01:11:17Life is hard. It's time for me to go now.
01:11:27In bygone days the human race did nothing but wage wars. Its very existence was taken
01:11:32up with campaigns, invasions, victories. And now all this is obsolete. And in its place
01:11:40a huge vacuum which for the moment can't be filled. Men are desperately trying to find
01:11:46something to fill it with. And they will certainly succeed. If only it could be soon.
01:11:58I really must go now. Here she is.
01:12:18I've come to say goodbye.
01:12:31My love. My love. Don't. Don't. Don't.
01:12:54My dearest. Don't forget me. Write for me.
01:13:04Now let me go.
01:13:07I must.
01:13:09August who gave me take her from me please.
01:13:16I really must go now.
01:13:25I'm late already.
01:13:31Marsha, dear.
01:13:33Marsha, dear.
01:13:36That's enough. That's enough.
01:13:38Never mind. Let her cry.
01:13:42Let her.
01:13:47My good Marsha, my kind Marsha, you are my wife and I am happy whatever else there may be.
01:13:59I'm not complaining. I'm not reproaching you, not at all.
01:14:03Ola is my witness.
01:14:06Luke.
01:14:07We'll start life over again as before.
01:14:10And I'll never say a word.
01:14:12Not a word, mind you.
01:14:13The green oak tree was at the main door.
01:14:16On that oak of a golden chair.
01:14:19I'm going mad.
01:14:22Marsha, dear.
01:14:23Calm down. There's a good girl.
01:14:25Get her some water.
01:14:30I'm not crying anymore.
01:14:33She's not crying anymore.
01:14:35She's not crying anymore.
01:14:41She's kind.
01:14:42The green oak tree beside the main door.
01:14:44On that oak of a golden chain of green chair.
01:14:47I've got into a muddle.
01:14:50It's all over. I don't want anything.
01:14:53My life is a failure.
01:14:59I'll calm down in a minute.
01:15:03The green oak tree beside the main.
01:15:06What does it mean, beside the main?
01:15:11Why does that phrase stick in my mind?
01:15:17You must try and calm down.
01:15:19There's a good girl.
01:15:21Let's go in.
01:15:22No.
01:15:24I won't go into that house.
01:15:28I won't go in there anymore.
01:15:30No.
01:15:40Let's all sit here together.
01:15:45Quietly.
01:15:47Silently.
01:15:51Tomorrow I'm going away, you know.
01:15:56Yesterday, I took a false beard and moustache away from a boy in the third form.
01:16:00Oh.
01:16:01I look like the German teacher.
01:16:03Don't I?
01:16:05Funny piece, boys.
01:16:08Yes.
01:16:09Yes, it's true. You do.
01:16:11Yes, you do.
01:16:15Very like him.
01:16:16Indeed.
01:16:17What is it?
01:16:18Mihail Imanich Pratapop will look after Sophie.
01:16:21And Andrei Hergevich will take Bobic out in the pram.
01:16:24Oh, what a nuisance these children are.
01:16:27Irina, darling.
01:16:28You're really going tomorrow.
01:16:30What a pity.
01:16:32Why not stay for another week?
01:16:34Go away, but you scared me.
01:16:39I got so used to having you here.
01:16:41And you think it'll be easy for me without you.
01:16:44I'll have Andrei with his violin moved into your room.
01:16:47Oh, let him soar away in there.
01:16:49And then Sophie will go into his room.
01:16:52Oh, she's such a sweet, lovely child.
01:16:55She gave me such a special look today.
01:16:57And then said, Mama.
01:16:58A wonderful child, that's true.
01:17:00So tomorrow I'll be all alone here.
01:17:05First thing I'll do is have that row of fir trees cut down.
01:17:08And then that maple over there.
01:17:10It is so ugly in the evening.
01:17:12Oh, Irina, darling.
01:17:14That belt.
01:17:15It doesn't suit you at all.
01:17:18It's not in good taste.
01:17:19You should have something brighter.
01:17:21And then I'll have flowers planted.
01:17:24Everywhere round here.
01:17:26Lots and lots of flowers.
01:17:28Oh, and they'll smell so sweet.
01:17:38Eat.
01:17:39What is this fork doing out here?
01:17:45What is this fork doing out here, I ask you?
01:17:50A fork in the middle of a garden?
01:17:53Eat, silence!
01:17:55There's no holding her.
01:18:04They're going.
01:18:14Our soldiers are going.
01:18:18Safe journey, Tootho.
01:18:44It's time to go home.
01:18:49Where's my hat and cake?
01:18:51I took them into the house.
01:18:54I'll bring them at once.
01:18:57We can all go home now.
01:19:00It's time.
01:19:05Hold this jacket.
01:19:06Yes?
01:19:07What is it?
01:19:10Nothing yet.
01:19:12I don't know how to do it.
01:19:17Be careful.
01:19:18Yes, that's bad business.
01:19:19But I'm so tired.
01:19:21I'm so exhausted.
01:19:23I don't want to say anymore.
01:19:27What's happened?
01:19:29What a terrible day.
01:19:37I simply don't know how to break the news to you, my dearest boy.
01:19:41What is it?
01:19:41Tell me quickly.
01:19:44Oh, God!
01:19:46Barron's just been killed in a duel.
01:19:49Will you?
01:19:52Will you?
01:19:57Let them cry.
01:20:00Let them cry.
01:20:07Oh, listen to that band play.
01:20:12They are leaving us.
01:20:15One of them is gone forever.
01:20:21And we'll be left here alone.
01:20:23To begin our lives again.
01:20:28One must go on living.
01:20:33One must go on.
01:20:37And working.
01:20:42Yes, working.
01:20:46Tomorrow I will go on my own.
01:20:50I will teach in that school and give my whole life to those who may need it.
01:20:56It is autumn now.
01:21:00Winter will come soon and cover everything with snow.
01:21:05And I'll be working.
01:21:09And I'll be working.
01:21:10Working.
01:21:14The band is playing so gaily, so buoyantly.
01:21:19And one can't help wanting to live.
01:21:24Oh, merciful God.
01:21:27The years will pass and we will be gone forever.
01:21:30We'll be forgotten.
01:21:31Our faces and our voices will be forgotten.
01:21:34And there'll be nobody to know even how many of us there were.
01:21:39But our sufferings will be transformed into joy for those who live after us.
01:21:44Happiness and peace will reign on earth.
01:21:46And then we'll be remembered with charity.
01:21:49And we'll be blessed.
01:21:53Oh, my dear sister.
01:21:57Our life has not yet come to an end.
01:22:00Let us live.
01:22:03The band is playing so gaily, so joyfully.
01:22:07And perhaps in a little while we will know why we live.
01:22:11Why we suffer.
01:22:13If only we could know.
01:22:16If only we could.
01:22:19If we only knew.
01:22:22If we only knew.
01:22:26If we only knew.
01:22:42If only.
01:22:43Who knew.
01:23:11It went from an hour.
