00:00Let's cross now to Benedict Pavio, our correspondent in London, for the latest.
00:04Benedict, what else can you tell us about this charge and why he was arrested?
00:12Let's make it first extremely clear.
00:14This is a royal earthquake, a national earthquake that is touching the royal, the British royal family.
00:24Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, former Prince Andrew, has been arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office.
00:34So what we know so far is that the police are saying that King Charles's brother, a former trade envoy
00:42for the United Kingdom, is in custody as we speak.
00:46And officers are carrying out searches at addresses in Berkshire and Norfolk.
00:51So we believe that those police searches are being held, as we speak, at his new residence on the Sandringham
00:59estate, privately owned by the king, and at Royal Lodge, which is a royal residence now.
01:06They will be searching, no doubt, for devices, whether it's an iPad, an iPhone, a mobile phone, a computer, documents,
01:15of course.
01:16And this is, although the police, and I have to make this clear, the British police have not named him,
01:23it is, British media understand, it is indeed the former Prince Andrew.
01:28It turns out it is his 66th birthday.
01:32Let's remember that the former prince is eighth in line to the crown.
01:37Now, we do not know exactly how long he will be held.
01:42He could be held for two hours, 12 hours, 24 hours.
01:45The maximum we understand he can be held for is 96 hours, and that would be with extensions requested within
01:52the police.
01:54But this is very serious.
01:56We don't know if it is indeed particularly to do, the suspicion it is, to do with when he was
02:01trade envoy,
02:02and emails that we've seen released by the American Department of Justice, in which it appears that Andrew actually sent
02:12in real time government, British government, market-sensitive documents to Jeffrey Epstein, the former late pedophile sex offender.
02:23Now, Benedict, you said that this has set off an earthquake in the United Kingdom.
02:28Could you quickly just elaborate a little bit more on the reaction within the public there?
02:34And have we heard anything from the royal family?
02:37We have not so far heard anything from the royal family.
02:41The reaction is clearly it is breaking news, headline news.
02:45People are shocked because what we've had effectively, when we all went to bed last night, there were, we thought,
02:54nine assessments of various police forces throughout the United Kingdom
02:58who were assessing whether they would open investigation into Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor on a number of subjects, whether it's trafficking,
03:08it would appear.
03:09And these are, let's remember, these are all, at this point, allegations.
03:13He has not been charged.
03:15That's important to underline that.
03:16But it is important also that if there have been women trafficked into the palaces, you know, how the royal
03:23family who have said that they can help are prepared to help and open up their books, their police logs,
03:29royal protection officers, etc.
03:30So this is a royal family that has been heckled increasingly.
03:36And the work that they do, whether it's the king, whether it's the queen, whether it's the heir to the
03:41throne, Prince William and others, their work being completely overshadowed.
03:45And sometimes in public, not just questioned and thrown questions by journalists, but starting to be heckled by some members
03:53of the public.
03:53An incredible, extraordinary, unprecedented situation.
