00:02I am so pleased to welcome to the stage Ang Lee so they told me two minutes to
00:22talk about Michelle how did I do that well let me just tell you a little bit
00:28of my own experience with Michelle about 27 years ago I was in a place where I
00:34could just go back to China and get whatever I want so I decided to fulfill
00:41my childhood fantasy in order to deal with my midlife crisis I wanted to do
00:47this movie Crouching Tiger and Dragon I want to do this epic martial art movie
00:53that breaks everybody's heart that's my dream I want to go back to China
00:59and collect all the great sceneries and culture details and everything everything
01:06I want to do sense of sensibility with kicking ass in short I want to do it I
01:12want to have everything so who do I get to think of Michelle at that time wasn't a
01:18difficult thought at all she was the queen of martial arts biggest star in Asia and
01:24all that except one thing I didn't know if she could act so all the movie I saw
01:31over her up to that point they were they were action movies so so I wonder to
01:38myself because I have faith in this thing because she just has this look and
01:43this position in her that she can break your heart I just had that feeling now I
01:49have to debate in two famous Chinese saying one is that then become motion like
01:56you should never judge a person by his appeal the other famous saying is
02:00Sean you sing soon our look come from our heart so I went to that direction I take
02:06the leap of a jump like the end of the movie and I work with Michelle the first
02:10week I shot with her I was amazed to find something I never seen before and never
02:16seen since it's a movie star who struggle with dramatic acting and struggle with
02:24Mandarin and she just has to look like a child actors so innocent and pressures
02:30that never seen that happen on the movie stars so I took advantage of that I
02:37didn't tell her I think I hit the jack pocket I just kept demanding her at the
02:42first week a second week she broke her knee ligaments unfortunately I learned a
02:51highway that never talked to actors or even some person about acting while they're
02:57doing the fighting things anyway we have to shoot everything out in two months
03:03waiting for her surgery and rehab when she come back the first thing she did was
03:10the heartbreaking climax of the movie during fast death and I can only shoot
03:17close-up because we have to proper foot up the whole leg was on the stool my god
03:24those tears were genuine but what's more amazing is behind those glistening tears the
03:34struggle the complexity of life down one run quitting love all the rich textures of
03:40life emotions they just vibrant like volcanoes it's one of a few times I lost my
03:46composure as a cool director a professional I lost it I had to go away and cry for
03:5415 15 minutes to calm myself down it was that deep it reminded me why I want to make
04:01move in the first place that was Michelle so after that you would think that should be
04:09all to be like the climax the highlight of anybody's career right what was wrong and
04:14Michelle just keep going and going and going until she has the next generation great filmmaker
04:26to come out to praise her I wouldn't be surprised five ten years from now that some new generation
04:34filmmaker come up here and celebrate her Michelle is a great movie star she's a great actress she's a great
04:44person human being and she's a great friend of mine here to see her name is going to her star
04:52is going to be here I can see next to Heather way and
04:56Hathaway all I want to say is what took so long congratulations Michelle
05:02thank you
