From Gold Rush to Iconic Jeans: The Fascinating Origin Story of Levi's
Transcript
00:00Hello everybody, welcome to my channel. Today we are going to talk about Leva's, the brand,
00:06the jeans, the company, its history, and also its future. And this is not sponsored by anybody.
00:13This is my own personal channel and I just wanted to share with you what I know and what
00:19I found interesting about Leva IS after having worn their jeans for a while.
00:24I think it's important that we understand the context of why this company was created,
00:29where they started, where they are now, and where they might be going in the future.
00:34So let's start at the beginning. Leva Strauss & Co. was founded in 1853 in Bavaria, Germany,
00:43by Leva Strauss and his four brothers. They were originally a dry goods company selling things
00:49like bedsheets, towels, clothing, things like that. In 1873, they opened up a San Francisco office in
00:58hopes of supplying miners out west with the products that they needed because there had been a gold
01:04rush, the California gold rush, and so they thought that this would be a great opportunity for them
01:10to sell all sorts of different things to people who were looking to strike it rich.
01:15In 1873, one of Leva's suppliers out west sent him a letter asking for something to be done about
01:23these miners who were wearing their pants halfway up their knees. And this inspired Leva to create a new work
01:30pant
01:31that would stay on the hips and wouldn't write up when you were working out in the mines. And so
01:36he decided
01:37to do just that. He partnered with a tailor named Jacob Davis, who had come up with a method of
01:43attaching
01:44metal rivets to the points of strain on these work pants.
