Transcript
00:01Hello and welcome, I'm Pranay Upadhyay and you are watching India Today Global.
00:06As India hosts AI Impact Summit 2026, world leaders and tech executives make a beeline for New Delhi
00:12and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have held several bilateral meetings since then.
00:17After welcoming French President Emmanuel Macron to India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Spanish President Pedro Sanchez.
00:24Prime Minister Modi also welcomed Finland's Prime Minister Pateri Orpo.
00:28Orpo's in India to attend the AI Impact Summit and Prime Minister Narendra Modi also had a bilateral meeting
00:33with the President of Republic of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, where both leaders discussed avenues to strengthen the bilateral cooperation
00:41in the areas of trade and investment along with artificial intelligence and fintech.
00:47Prime Minister Modi also met the Chief Executive of Google, Sundar Pichai and both of them discussed the artificial intelligence
00:54in advancing India's developmental goals.
00:56After meeting Prime Minister Modi, Sundar Pichai reposted his post on social media platform X by saying, and I quote,
01:04that we discussed how Google is helping with his mission to infuse AI at all levels in India to improve
01:11health,
01:12expand access to information in all languages and support startups, agriculture and so much more.
01:18Thank you, Prime Minister Modi, for bringing us together for the incredible summit, unquote.
01:28And moving on, let's talk about the Russia-Ukraine talks as well.
01:33Two-day trilateral meeting between United States, Russia and Ukraine in Geneva ended without a major breakthrough,
01:40though officials described the talks as difficult but business-like.
01:44Both sides signaled limited progress and agreed that another round of negotiations will take place soon.
01:50Mahat Shweta Lala with this report.
01:55The two-day trilateral meet between US, Russia and Ukraine ended in Geneva on Wednesday without any major breakthrough.
02:04The meeting on the second day lasted for two hours.
02:11The talks lasted for two days.
02:13We had very long discussions yesterday in various formats.
02:16Today we talked about two hours.
02:18Talks were difficult but business-like.
02:20A new meeting will take place soon.
02:23There is progress, but no details can be disclosed at this stage.
02:27The next step is to achieve the necessary level of consensus
02:31to submit the developed decisions for consideration by the presidents.
02:36Our task is to prepare a practical, not merely formal, foundation for this.
02:42Ukraine remains constructive.
02:44The ultimate objective is unchanged, a just and sustainable peace.
02:48The U.S. delegation included Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner.
02:56The Russian delegation was led by presidential aide Vladimir Medinsky
03:00and the Ukraine's team included National Security and Defense Council Secretary Rustem Umrov.
03:07The closed-door meeting on the first day centered on establishing cease-fire, monitoring arrangements
03:13and addressing humanitarian concerns.
03:15According to sources, the initial talks were held in a tense atmosphere,
03:19with separate bilateral meetings between Russia and the United States, as well as Russia and Ukraine.
03:25As parties converged in Geneva, Russia said its forces had carried out massive attacks
03:31against Ukrainian energy infrastructure, while Ukraine claimed to have struck
03:35a Russian oil enterprise over the same time period.
03:38As per Russia's defense ministry, Russian forces struck Ukrainian military facilities,
03:44energy infrastructures and drone bases with high-precision weapons and drones in the past 24 hours.
03:50With its air defense forces shooting down eight Ukrainian-guided aerial bombs and 224 fixed-wing drones.
04:02All of these Russian missiles and drones used today contain thousands of components
04:07that Russia does not produce itself.
04:09Five Iskander-M missiles contain at least 75 critical foreign-made components.
04:14Each Shahid drone contains hundreds of such components imported into Russia from other countries
04:20and not only from Chinese companies, by the way, but also from Europe, America and Japan.
04:26It is important not only for us in Ukraine, but for global security overall
04:30that partners truly block the supply chain of critical components to Russia for weapons production.
04:41The Russian and Ukrainian delegations had last met in Abu Dhabi in January,
04:46which was brokered by the U.S.
04:48With President Donald Trump wanting to resolve the crisis at the earliest,
04:53Russia continues to demand for the full control of Ukraine's eastern Donbass,
04:57made up of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, which Ukraine does not agree to.
05:03With Mahashweta Lala, Bureau Report, India Today.
05:10And from Russia-Ukraine conflict, now let's zoom into a West Asia conflict or a flashpoint.
05:16Tension spike in the world's most critical oil choke point.
05:20Iran briefly shuts parts of the Strait of Hormuz,
05:23where nearly a third of global seaborne oil passes.
05:26Missiles fired, live-fire drill were conducted,
05:29as talks between the United States and Iran concluded yesterday in Geneva.
05:33But what does this short live closure mean for the oil market,
05:38regional stability and global power in the Gulf?
05:41Our next report tells you more.
05:56Iran has done what the world always feared,
05:59even if only for a few hours.
06:02Iran temporarily shut parts of the Strait of Hormuz,
06:06the world's most critical oil artery,
06:09a narrow strip of water that carries the livelihood of the global economy.
06:14Officially, Iran said it was about safety,
06:18live-fire military drills, missile launches, controlled closure.
06:24But timing is everything.
06:26The shutdown came amid rising tensions with Washington.
06:30U.S. military deployments increasing.
06:34Domestic unrest inside Iran after a violent crackdown on protesters.
06:42This was not just a drill, it was a message.
06:46The Strait of Hormuz is only about 33 kilometres wide at its narrowest point.
06:52On one side, Iran, on the other, Oman.
06:55Just nearby, the UAE's commercial powerhouse, Dubai.
07:00Through this narrow corridor flows roughly 13 million barrels of crude oil every single day.
07:07That's about 31% of global seaborn crude shipments.
07:11Nearly one-third of the world's oil moves through this one passage.
07:17Tankers from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Iraq, Qatar, Bahrain and the UAE and Iran itself all rely on it.
07:27There are pipelines that bypass it, but they are limited.
07:31Most exports have no real alternative route.
07:36Which means even the hint of disruptions sends oil prices climbing, insurance premiums rising, markets shaking, especially across energy-hungry
07:47Asia.
07:48But this is the first such shutdown since the 1980s.
07:52Even during last year's intense 12-day conflict with Israel, when ballistic missiles were flying, Iran did not fully close
08:00the Strait.
08:01This time, it did.
08:04The United States has repeatedly warned of possible military force over Iran's nuclear program.
08:10President Donald Trump has tied pressure and threats of strikes to pushing Tehran toward a nuclear deal.
08:17Recently, Vice President J.D. Vance has said that U.S. seeks Iran nuclear deal through diplomacy, but will keep
08:24military options open.
08:27Iran, however, has warned it could target U.S. interests across West Asia and Israel if attacked.
08:35I think the president has a lot of options.
08:37We do have a very powerful military.
08:39The president has shown a willingness to use it.
08:40He also has a remarkable diplomatic team.
08:43He's shown a willingness to use that, too.
08:44And so what the president has been very clear with the Iranians, and actually, I just talked to Steve Witkoff
08:49and Jared Kushner this morning about some of their negotiations, is the United States has certain red lines.
08:54Our primary interest here is we don't want Iran to get a nuclear weapon.
08:58In a region already on edge, with nuclear negotiations hanging in the balance, Iran demonstrated that it can escalate, without
09:06firing a shot at a ship.
09:08And when one narrow waterway carries nearly a third of the world's oil, even a few hours of disruption becomes
09:16a global warning.
09:17The Strait of Hormuz is not just geography, it is pressure.
09:21And Tehran just showed it knows exactly how to apply it.
09:26With Rudrishish Kanjalal, Bureau Report, India Today Global.
09:33U.S. President Donald Trump recently repealed a scientific finding that greenhouse gas emissions endanger human health, removing the legal
09:41basis for federal climate regulations.
09:43It also ended subsequent federal greenhouse gas emission standards for all vehicles and engines of model year 2012 to 2027.
09:52The so-called endangerment finding was first adopted by the United States in 2009 and led to EPA, Environmental Protection
09:59Agency, to take action under the Clean Air Act of 1963 to curb emissions of carbon dioxide, methane, and four
10:07other heat-trapping air pollutants from vehicles, power plants, and other industries.
10:12Former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who is in India, criticized Trump's move on environment protection.
10:18Listen to what she has to say.
10:22But certainly it's fair to say that more developed countries in the South, China, India, and others, are making contributions
10:31because we haven't made a full-scale enough transition into clean, renewable energy to replace polluting fossil fuels.
10:41And, you know, when I talk about fossil fuels, I'm not just talking about climate change.
10:47I'm talking about the pollution that fills the air in Delhi or Beijing.
10:52I'm talking about the clear evidence that pollution is impacting our health.
11:00And not just among poor people, among all of us.
11:03The particulates and what we breathe in is affecting our health and particularly the health of our children.
11:09So that's why when I talk about climate, I always talk about climate and health.
11:13Because it's not just an energy issue, it is also a health issue.
11:17So when we think about this big intergenerational transfer of wealth, I think that the older generation needs to join
11:26with the younger generation in doing whatever we can to interrupt this cycle of climate change and health impacts.
11:35And so from that perspective, we do need governments to address the systemic and structural issues.
11:42But we also need businesses and corporations to think that way as well.
11:47Just because the President of the United States does not want corporations to care about climate change doesn't mean you
11:57shouldn't care about climate change.
12:01Frankly, that's a political view of a dinosaur.
12:04It is just so out of touch with everything that we know, how we are living, what we are breathing,
12:12what we are seeing.
12:14We can't be told, don't pay attention to what has happened for political reasons.
12:19We have to say, no, we see it.
12:21And we're going to respond to it.
12:23So the systemic changes in both mitigation and adaptation must continue despite some of the pushback coming from my country
12:33in particular.
12:37Meta CEO and billionaire Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg will testify in a landmark trial for the first time in a
12:44U.S. court.
12:45Zuckerberg will be questioned about Instagram's effect on mental health of young users.
12:50He has previously testified before the U.S. Congress, but this time the stakes are higher at the jury trial
12:56in Los Angeles.
12:58Meta may have to pay damages if it loses the case, and the verdict could erode Big Tech's longstanding legal
13:04defense against the claims of user harm.
13:06A 20-year-old woman, identified as Kelly GM, in a court, is suing Facebook and Instagram's parent company, Meta
13:14Platforms, and Alphabet, Google, which owns YouTube, and other platforms as well.
13:20A verdict against the tech companies could smoothen the way for similar cases in U.S. courts, and shakes the
13:26industry's longstanding U.S. legal defense against the claim of user harm.
13:30Google, Meta, TikTok, and Snap faces number of lawsuits in California.
13:39And now, let's see what other stories are also making headlines across the globe in World at a Glance.
13:58Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov held talks with his Cuban counterpart in Moscow amid what Russia call an illegitimate U
14:08.S. blockade against the island.
14:09Lavrov said, Moscow will continue to provide support to Cuba and the Cuban people in defending the country's sovereignty and
14:17security.
14:18Meanwhile, Cuba's fuel crisis has become a waste crisis as many garbage trucks don't have enough patrol to pick up
14:24rubbish which is piling up on most of Havana's street corners.
14:32Spokesperson of the Department of Homeland Security, Trisha McLaughlin, is stepping down.
14:37McLaughlin is expected to leave a position as Assistant Secretary next week.
14:42She has been vocal defender of President Trump's mass deportation agenda.
14:49United Arab Emirates President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahan met U.S. Senator Lince Graham in Abu Dhabi.
14:57The senator said in a post on Ex, where he also criticized what he called false narratives circulating about the
15:03UAE and its leader.
15:05Earlier in the week, social media speculation about Sheikh Mohammed's health had surged after Turkey's President Erdogan postponed a planned
15:12visit to Abu Dhabi and his office posted,
15:15then deleted a post on Ex, saying the Emirati leader had health problems.
15:23Peru's ousted President Jose Jairi bid farewell to his cabinet at the gates of the government palace after Congress voted
15:30to remove him from office over a scandal involving undisclosed meetings with a Chinese businessman.
15:37Jairi was filmed at the gates of the palace surrounded by his ministers and greeting supporters who turned out to
15:43express their support.
15:4475 lawmakers voted in favor of removing Jairi, while 24 voted against and 3 abstained.
15:54Rescue crews on skis and snowcats battled blizzard conditions in an effort to reach 6 backcountry skiers still alive but
16:03trapped.
16:04After an avalanche in the high rugged northern California mountains that left 10 other skiers missing as the danger of
16:11most lights remained high.
16:12The search and rescue crews were dispatched to Frog Lake in the Castle Peak area, northwest of Lake Tahoe,
16:20after someone reported an avalanche with people buried as a powerful winter storm moved through the state.
16:31As the world watches, India puts its maritime might on full display off the coast of Vishakhapatnam.
16:3770 countries, 71 warships.
16:39The largest ever international fleet review led by India.
16:43From dramatic steam pass and aerial combat drills to the towering presence of INS Vikrant, the message is clear.
16:49India's naval rise is not just regional, it's global.
16:53Shivani Sharma reports.
16:56says沒錯.
17:24Jeremiah...
17:24Future mec.
17:24oak freighter decidos.
17:24the state and the day of naprawdÄ™ perfect.
17:28India showcases maritime muscle like never before.
17:32As the world watches off the coast of Ishaka Pattinam,
17:36the International Fleet Review 2026 led by India took place.
17:41We are witnessing the might of India's navy in the complex operations at sea right now
17:46with the International Fleet Review in progress
17:49where the president is reviewing more than 70 ships across the world.
17:54And this is how India's navy is not only enhancing its combat capabilities
17:59but also taking the ties with the best navies of the world ahead.
18:05This is the lineup during the International Fleet Review of these ships.
18:08And when we talk about the capabilities, there are ships from the Indian navy,
18:13around 20 ships, 20 submarines, the fighters, the helicopters.
18:20And we also see the ships from the friendly foreign nations.
18:25This is the lineup.
18:27There are six columns where the International Fleet Review is being done by the Indian navy.
18:34This is happening after 10 years.
18:36So this is very important and prestigious.
18:38Navies of 70 countries, 71 warships, the largest ever naval gathering in these waters.
18:47Along with the sea operations, we also see the air operations by the Indian navy.
18:52The come-off helicopters, the sea kings, the different aerial assets of the Indian navy
18:58are also displaying their might out here.
19:01These are the helicopters that are being used by the Indian navy for different operations,
19:07the complex drills at sea, be it the humanitarian operations or the surveillance
19:14or any complex operation that takes place in the sea.
19:18So this is how we see during the International Fleet Review the skill in the air of the Indian navy.
19:23This is the Danya aircraft of the Indian navy that is being operated by Indian navies in several decades now.
19:30They have been operational at multiple locations.
19:33They have been operational at multiple operations and complex missions.
19:39So this is the Danya aircraft.
19:41So we've seen that apart from the ship, the warfare in the skies is also spectacular during the International Fleet
19:50Review.
19:52And towering over it all, India's pride.
19:56INS Vikrant, battle ready, on alert.
20:02The world's fleet's coverage and tomorrow the action deepens.
20:08I'm really impressed about the hospitality, the sharp look of the Indian navy
20:13and the opportunities that we have to interact with the Indian navy and one of the 73 delegates.
20:20So I see this as an opportunity, a day of joy and a day of coordination with the Indian navy.
20:30Milan 2026 begins.
20:33Harbour interactions.
20:34Strategic seminars.
20:36Join drills at sea.
20:38Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will be chief guest.
20:42The CDS and three service chiefs will attend.
20:46This could be considered as the biggest maritime gathering.
20:49The participation which is taking place as part of a larger scope of activities
20:55which start with this International Fleet Review today
20:58will have the opening Milan ceremony, opening ceremony on 19th
21:02and also the Indian Ocean Naval Symposium conclave of chiefs.
21:0872 delegations from 72 countries are participating.
21:12There are two international constructs which makes it 74.
21:14So in that form it is the largest so far.
21:19From anti-piracy missions to freedom of navigation.
21:23From diplomacy to deterrence.
21:26India's maritime rise is truly global.
21:30With Shivani Sharma in Vishakapatanam, Bureau Report, India Today.
