00:00Facebook founder and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg will testify today in a landmark trial about
00:05social media addiction. This is going to be the first time that the tech executive will address
00:09youth safety claims in front of a jury. The Los Angeles trial was brought about by a now 20-year
00:15old identified in court papers as only Kaylee. Kaylee blames Instagram, YouTube, and other
00:21online platforms for fueling her mental health struggles. She says companies like Meta quote
00:26engineered addiction through deliberate design features on their platforms. And Zuckerberg's
00:31testimony comes as new polling found that a whopping 86 percent of Americans want Meta and
00:36Google held accountable for the social media addiction crisis. The survey, which comes from
00:41the Tech Oversight Project and YouGov, cited some evidence that surfaced in this current trial,
00:45specifically internal corporate documents, showing that the companies buried research that uncovered
00:50the damaging effects of their products. 67 percent of poll respondents said that they would be more
00:56likely to vote for U.S. lawmakers who supported legislation to crack down on this issue.
01:01The head of the Tech Oversight Project says, quote, this trial has already proven that there is a direct
01:06link between big tech's dangerous product designs and real world harms. And it should come as no surprise
01:12that voters are mad as hell and want Congress to do something about it. Now, Zuckerberg's testimony
01:17comes a few weeks into this landmark trial, and the whole thing is expected to stretch into March.
