00:00:15welcome back everybody to another edition of new york got game your boy dexter henry is here
00:00:19joined by my guy brian fonseca sir all-star break is pretty much over i would get into what you
00:00:27guys think about the all-star break but i don't care about the all-star game as much as some
00:00:30other
00:00:30people do but it was more interesting this year is what i'll say but we're going to get back to
00:00:36actual nba basketball that is competitive not exhibition games that people have to talk about
00:00:41all the time we're going to get back to that and the knicks right out of the break have a
00:00:46big game
00:00:47love it and i like it they got two big games actually right out the break but i love it
00:00:51big
00:00:51game at home first time at home this season they will play the detroit pistons we know how
00:00:57the first two times went and they were not good uh got blown out beat downs in both of them
00:01:03now
00:01:04how much you can take from those games particularly the second one i'm not sure but here's what we're
00:01:10going to do today this is what we're going to tell you i know everybody's been wondering it we're going
00:01:13to look at why have the knicks struggled against the detroit pistons this season why they done so
00:01:20this is going to be a film breakdown where we look at exactly what the struggles are with the knicks
00:01:25this
00:01:25season against the pistons and look like we said it hasn't looked good in either games in fact in
00:01:29the last game whoo it didn't look good for jalen brunson and that's actually where we're going to
00:01:35start today because brian talked about this when we were doing the watch party and we will have
00:01:40another watch party with a special guest for the pistons game on thursday so tap him with us on that
00:01:46and it's going to be a fun one yes all i'm going to say is the ops are going to
00:01:49be in the building
00:01:50that's what i will say on that it's going to be interesting however jalen brunson did not have a
00:01:57good game the last time against the pistons 4 of 20 shooting one of the things you mentioned b
00:02:02was the pistons they can and they will throw a lot of length at jalen brunson and that frustrated him
00:02:12now we've seen this movie before we've seen teams try to try to throw length at jalen brunson
00:02:19and jalen brunson is usually pretty good at figuring it out what i will say though is for
00:02:26pistons defense that is second in the nba in terms of defensive rating they have a lot a lot of
00:02:34length and a lot of different body types with the length they can throw at you right so it's not
00:02:39just they got a lot of guys with crazy wingspan absolutely they also have mass and physicality
00:02:45they can kind of throw at you do you before we get into this and show people the film do
00:02:49you see
00:02:49this as a major problem that concerns you or do you believe that is something jalen brunson can
00:02:55absolutely figure out you want him to be able to figure it out by not taking 30 shots every game
00:03:02uh that's kind of the thing or 25 even you have a lot of size you have a lot of
00:03:07length you
00:03:07mentioned different body types it's also just a switchability like how many people are competent
00:03:11and better than competent but really good defenders on this pistons team and that's why we have to be
00:03:18careful about calling them fraudulent ahead of time because i tend to think that the fraudulent teams
00:03:23who are great in the regular season are more so the offensive teams and the pistons are not great
00:03:28pistons are not a team that's blowing everybody out of the water as a matter of fact the offensive
00:03:33ceiling is where i would have some questions about hey do they have enough offense to sort of get by
00:03:39like the knicks in a series the celtics in a series and even cleveland if cleveland's actually going to
00:03:44be better with james harden now in the regular season i think that's true but in the playoffs we'll
00:03:47see um you have a lot of like isaiah stewart you could throw on jalen brunson for a stretch you
00:03:52know
00:03:52what i mean you don't he's not going to guard him the entire game but if he gets him on
00:03:56a switch and
00:03:56he will like that's not one of the bigs you want you know in that sort of space you'd rather
00:04:02somebody like nikola vucevic who just got recently traded to the celtics regarding jalen brunson as
00:04:06opposed to isaiah stewart you also have obviously a sarah thompson who we're going to talk about
00:04:09kind of extensively in this video uh from a defensive standpoint ron holland as well um
00:04:14karis lavert even at times because they'll go offense defense and they'll use karis lavert as
00:04:19opposed to maybe duncan robinson for defense down the stretch um like they just have so many
00:04:24different guys and there's even others that i'm not naming and by the way kate cunningham
00:04:27is a solid defensive guard like a lot of people probably think and i've made this point already
00:04:33before on new york our game but people tend to not give him his respect defensively i don't know if
00:04:38they think that he's one of these heliocentric offensive players who puts up big numbers and is
00:04:43not a plus defender but he is a plus defender he's a good solid defender and he can hold his
00:04:47ground
00:04:47against jalen brunson so having to make jalen brunson work and take a lot of tough shots is what
00:04:52they're going to try to do and we've seen this with brunson year in and year out in the playoffs
00:04:55even going back to like the heat series a few years ago where you would see jimmy butler where
00:05:01you would see obviously bam out of bio and some of the other guys that they have there detroit can
00:05:04do a lot of that and that's where they're going to try to hurt the knicks offensively is making
00:05:08jalen brunson work very hard yeah you're going to see that and it was we've seen it already through
00:05:13two games we've absolutely seen that and so we're going to look at four things in terms of why the
00:05:18knicks have struggled against the pistons this season as you said the first one is going to be
00:05:23how the pistons guard jalen brunson and we just talked about them doing what length so let's look
00:05:29at the film when it comes to looking at this and when you look at the film and you look
00:05:33at this with
00:05:34jalen brunson this is a team that they're going to throw length at them at him a couple of times
00:05:39they're going to use the short thompson they're going to use different guys um so let's bring up
00:05:44the plays i want to show everybody the first thing that we can look at with with him here and
00:05:49the
00:05:49first play that we have here this is from the peacock games this is the first time the two
00:05:54teams met uh this season we saw them play um in january january 5th i believe it was and we're
00:06:01going
00:06:01to take a look at what happens here so let's let this action play you see jalen brunson with the
00:06:05ball here at the top uh right by the half court mark so we're going to let it play here
00:06:11uh with jalen
00:06:12brunson bringing the ball into this action now you see the length there beef stew showing a sir
00:06:18thompson is on him right and that's ron holland ron holland excuse me um ron holland's there and
00:06:25ron holland does a fantastic job there of hands up right didn't keep his hands to the side jalen
00:06:33brunson had nowhere to go and the shot he takes look jalen brunson's got to fade away on this one
00:06:38and ron holland look at the run on gets his hands today his hands are up to show
00:06:41right and ron holland's able to get his hands down there very quickly so he doesn't fail look shows
00:06:47look at that he's there before the shot is going up right so that that he knows it's going up
00:06:52which
00:06:53is great because that blocks the shooter's vision jalen brunson has to fade away on that one off of
00:06:57one foot now i know somebody's gonna say hey dex we've seen jalen brunson make that shot a million
00:07:02times before sure we have but the more and more you have to see it against length is the harder
00:07:07that it
00:07:07becomes and this is in the first quarter this is nine minutes about into this game and you're seeing
00:07:14this and that is a tough shot for jalen brunson now jalen brunson played better in this game than he
00:07:18did in the february game but immediately look at the length you're seeing because you're ron holland's
00:07:23there isaiah stewart shows right so you gotta wonder and isaiah stewart length and also got some size yes
00:07:31that you have to deal with so that's even a problem for jalen brunson and by the way more quickness
00:07:35than you
00:07:35think also like isaiah stewart he he doesn't he doesn't play huge minutes every game but he is an
00:07:41all defense caliber type of dude oh yeah no we only have two all defensive teams so he probably won't
00:07:46make it but i think the pistons should get somebody and he's gonna be one of the leading candidates for
00:07:51that yeah he should be and he does a great job here of what you would want also when you
00:07:56think about
00:07:56this when you are forcing defenses if you're forcing offenses you want them to go towards the baseline
00:08:02and use that as an extra man so stewart does his job then he's able to come back right into
00:08:07the in
00:08:07away from the action he's tagging he's tagging mitchell robinson cutting and so now i think that's
00:08:13javante green who's rotating over to the shooter which is kevin mcculler and now ron holland this is
00:08:18the thing like you can switch and throw like we just talked about it throw all these different guys on
00:08:23to jalen brunson but then also so i think if you're watching this and you're like okay they're gonna need
00:08:29to get other guys involved so jalen brunson has to pass here well kate cunningham is over here
00:08:35on jordan clarkson you see jaden ivy no longer with the team uh on deuce mcbride and by the way
00:08:40in this
00:08:41game like there were some injury stuff uh deuce mcbride this was his first game first game back
00:08:46from injury josh hart did not play landry shammott did not play but for the pistons no jalen duran who
00:08:50the knicks have not seen yet this season will not see this season yeah unless they play each other in
00:08:55the playoffs right uh no tobias harrison no karis lavert so fairly significant injuries on the
00:09:01piston side also josh hart being out and landry shammott is pretty big for the knicks so you had
00:09:05injuries on both sides and then look at this i mean the physicality there beating him to the spot
00:09:10and the thing is like you made a good point dex where i think if you're a knicks fan watching
00:09:15this
00:09:15you're like oh jalen brunson just missed a shot like he could make this shot but if you're detroit if
00:09:19you're forcing this every single time that's what you want that's what you want because also like
00:09:24nobody else is getting open nobody else is getting involved nobody else is really cutting
00:09:28they're just kind of staring and ball watching here and this is not even a late in the shot clock
00:09:33shot you're looking down here there's 11 seconds left yeah yeah you got you that's what this is a
00:09:39win for detroit right this is an absolute win for him it's a tough shot can brunson hit that sure
00:09:44now i'm gonna go here and this is what we're gonna look at in his next couple of clips
00:09:48just to keep this thing moving this you're gonna see this this is the uh what we i would say
00:09:54for
00:09:54detroit the assort thompson special here they are gonna do a lot of assort thompson now look man
00:09:59assort thompson is absolutely motivated we all know how he got crossed and cooked at the end of
00:10:05game six and then jade so he's gonna try to bring a little extra something and he's been really good
00:10:10defensively great this and he's great speaking of all defense he's another one that will be in
00:10:14those conversations he's one of the best on-ball defenders in basketball period he's as good as his
00:10:19brother honestly defensively defensively and he's he's not as good as his brother offensively
00:10:23yeah but he is motivated his brother's got some things to work out offensively as well i agree and
00:10:28i really like his brother but he was motivated here and you know that and listen the young man
00:10:32here is going to be motivated so i want you to watch with these next two plays
00:10:37how assort thompson makes life very difficult for jalen brunson and is able to get physical and i
00:10:45wonder when i notice use the word physical i want to say jalen brunson's the kind of player that
00:10:47can get physical too for his size yeah he will take and absorb contact and finish through it
00:10:52we've seen this so jalen brunson can welcome the physicality not worried about that with him it's
00:10:57the quality of shots he's getting against length and physicality that i worry about and i think
00:11:01as sir thompson you'll see here how he made life difficult for the next star so let's let this let
00:11:05this one rock and i just want to add it's also taxing if you have to work that hard as
00:11:09a smaller guard
00:11:10against all the length and things like that taxing is the perfect word yeah like you don't want him to
00:11:15potentially get injured or just get worn down by the time the fourth quarter comes around which
00:11:19detroit is going to try to do and frankly anybody is going to try to do boston will try to
00:11:22do something
00:11:22similar especially after the last season by the way game two uh no jalen duran for the pistons again
00:11:27as we mentioned the knicks had no cat no og no deuce no jose alvarado because jose alvarado had just
00:11:33been traded for so the knicks were more shorthanded in this game but again we talked about they should
00:11:39have put up a better effort and part of this was also detroit just played really really well to your
00:11:43point
00:11:43so let's let this run assar thompson i mean just i know people are going to want the foul there
00:11:51but i'm going to tell you why that wasn't called briefly first of all beats him to the spot
00:11:59he's there he's right there it's a great shut off and he's in there now you can say he's reaching
00:12:03across the other arm and that's a foul but he does get some of the ball there and a lot
00:12:07of
00:12:07it gets a lot of ball there i don't have a problem with it i think it's a pretty decent
00:12:12strip jalen
00:12:13brunson goes up now jalen brunson on the shot through you can say there's contact there but
00:12:18the ball's already dislodged and he doesn't have control of it and i think that's the reason he
00:12:22mostly doesn't get the call here brian and in the playoffs i mean look if you're if you're a new
00:12:27york sports fan if you're a nick fan if you're an nba fan in general if you're a pistons fan
00:12:31like we ain't trying to see this called in the playoffs we're trying to see well like you also come
00:12:38on
00:12:38you want like physical basketball and people like it you just hope that it gets called both ways yes
00:12:42yeah yeah if you're gonna call this on one end but i i don't think this is like this is
00:12:47not something
00:12:47where i'm like oh he definitely got fouled whatever like come on the reason i the reason we chose this
00:12:53play i want to be very clear because it also shows the tone of how detroit wants to play with
00:12:59jalen
00:13:00brunson the physicality and again this is also you're gonna have to adjust to that you know when you
00:13:05try this is a move jalen brunson will try to get to he will try to get to that spot
00:13:08just inside the
00:13:09elbow of the free throw line pull up and he'll try to pull up so he's now going to be
00:13:13either thinking
00:13:14about expecting that physicality of a player like a sir thompson trying to get the strip how does he do
00:13:19that is it an extra dribble is it a fake back to maybe try to make a sir thompson to
00:13:24commit to get a
00:13:25reach and foul these are the games within the game that you're going to see going forward but jalen
00:13:31brunson there he was acting for the call you can see josh hands with his hands up there too he's
00:13:35like yo where's the call man but that's the kind of physicality does that now this is this is a
00:13:41good
00:13:41point now watch this again this is another one with jalen brunson you're going to see him get the ball
00:13:44here right here a jalen brunson's right here you're going to see him get the ball and sir thompson's
00:13:49going to be involved in this one too uh as sir thompson in this game oh man he gave him
00:13:54hell he he had a
00:13:55great yeah he gave him hell um so you're gonna see jalen brunson so jalen actually can you beat
00:14:02him to the spot here asar thompson like you want this is actually pretty good positioning for jalen
00:14:06brunson uh off the catch he's got the angle and it's to his left his strong hand right do you
00:14:11want
00:14:12him to pull up here you have i don't love seconds left i don't love that shot you're down 22
00:14:17because
00:14:18look at where sir thompson is that's still even a great place for him to close out properly now yeah
00:14:23he can because he's closing out from the opposite side of your shooting hand you are thinking if he
00:14:28closes too hard maybe he goes into you maybe he fouls you that's a possibility i think i don't love
00:14:33the shot there yeah i think the right thing to do is get sorry to cut you off b the
00:14:37right thing to do
00:14:37is to get what mike brown talks about can we get a spray can we get a spray for people
00:14:42haven't heard
00:14:43all season long but i know you have been listening to mike brown can you get into the paint and
00:14:46kick it
00:14:46out to a shooter only thing about a spray here is i know where you're going ain't much going on
00:14:51here
00:14:51spacing the spacing is not great michael bridges and muhammadio are right here tobias harris and
00:14:57kate cunningham just could kind of hang out and josh hart is over here with duncan robinson what
00:15:01you're hoping for is that one of the cunningham or harris commits and gives you a pass there that's
00:15:09what you're hoping for so let's see if they do there's a drive still got a decent angle here i'm
00:15:13actually fine with jaylen taking this drive if i'm mike brown it's like okay see see if you can make
00:15:18something happen can you draw some contact can you get a bomb can you get to the free throw line
00:15:22could you get a good shot off can you beat him all the way to the basket right great use
00:15:27of just
00:15:27the body here from assar thompson not being overly committing with the hands not reaching not reaching
00:15:34at all he gets bumped there and then back to the help back to the physicality and switchability
00:15:39it's like mitchell robinson's here isaiah stewart's like okay the lava isn't coming so i can just leave
00:15:45and i can help and here we go there's a block or contest i think i think can i just
00:15:52say as you
00:15:52run that back i think you also have to credit kate cunningham and tobias harris for not over helping
00:15:57great point and staying with their man and isaiah stewart saying like hey well if you do lob it here
00:16:02right here if you lob it you beat me and there's nothing i could do right but if you shoot
00:16:06it with
00:16:07jaylen brunson did i'm gonna make this a tough shot because you have lengths to your right and length
00:16:12right in front of your face to your left and you're going up to with your left hand this is
00:16:16going to
00:16:16be tough you have two guys with length on you inside so you see how beef stew is able to
00:16:21be a
00:16:21helper even if brunson was able to lob it right here that's a very difficult pass it's hard because
00:16:26look at where mitchell robinson he's behind the backboard practically like it's it's you got to get
00:16:31that over the rim almost yeah cade cade by the way you see here he's just like i'm just gonna
00:16:37be long
00:16:37here like i'm just gonna extend it's the right use my wingspan yeah trusting is trusting your
00:16:42defense who was supposed to help and he's not fouling he's not fouling either by the way so
00:16:47duncan robinson's here he's like oh i know josh hart's not getting this pass right it's a difficult
00:16:51pass to make because again assar thompson's right here this is probably going to be cookies and now
00:16:56duncan robinson is like okay in the event that mitchell robinson like he's frantically like okay we
00:17:01cannot let not let mitchell robinson get this rebound and you have multiple knicks like mikhail bridges
00:17:06is basically out of the play at this point and muhammadior is in the corner and now you get the
00:17:11stop and you get the rebound from there yeah so another good example of how length not just from
00:17:16assur thompson but also to help defense from isaiah stewart helped in now let's look at this other play
00:17:21this going back to the first meeting between the two teams who's on him isaiah stewart your boy beef stew
00:17:26yep is on him right and you see look how good he's moving his feet now he gets crossed over
00:17:30here there
00:17:30jalen brunson creates the space right he did this is a shot we see jb hit you've seen the captain
00:17:38hit
00:17:38this one it's actually a good offensive move he's able to create the space he got isaiah stewart leaning
00:17:42a little bit but that little bit of length and the effort on the closeout by isaiah stewart is what
00:17:47you're going to see happen here now i'm going to give you a little bit of a spoiler alert here
00:17:50this possession ends in the knicks bucket however that's not the point the point is this is not an easy
00:17:57shot all shots are not going to be easy in the playoffs you need your stars to make some difficult
00:18:01shots right you need them to make some tough shots they're going to see different coverages but this
00:18:06is the confidence this is the reason we're showing this the confidence that detroit has in using one
00:18:12of their bigs to put on jalen brunson in space now here's the thing if you're coach brown and he
00:18:19get
00:18:19you got beef stew on jail brunson you gotta cook the beef stew okay you want him to cook the
00:18:24beef stew
00:18:25easier said than it is easier said than done but you look seven out of ten times eight out of
00:18:30ten
00:18:31times you like the matchup because you're like i think jalen brunson can create the space eight
00:18:35seconds left on the shot clock i actually and you know what's the thing too i think i think i
00:18:42like
00:18:43why can't mikhail bridges take duncan robinson off the dribble here instead mikhail bridges is in
00:18:49the corner has duncan duncan robinson brian fonseca are you asking the question that everybody's been
00:18:54asking since the beginning of time with his tenure why can't that happen like we've been waiting to
00:18:59see that you're talking about why can't he punish a player that you think you should cook you're you're
00:19:04not wrong like so you're saying that you think he should give the ball from that spot to mikhail
00:19:09bridges and mikhail bridge should go cook i don't disagree with you duncan robinson is not as bad of
00:19:14a defender as he's profiled to be he makes a lot he's made a lot of sitting mistakes in miami
00:19:18in terms
00:19:18of fouling but like he can move his feet and on the team with good defenders but you like that
00:19:22you
00:19:23saying there should be an advantage here but for mikhail bridges yes like i i think mikhail bridges
00:19:28against duncan robinson is more of an advantage than jalen brunson against isaiah stewart i don't
00:19:32disagree with you what i don't disagree but i agree with your point i'm saying body of work what have
00:19:37you seen to make you believe that that would happen and i think that's i tried mikhail i think it's
00:19:45a fair
00:19:45question i'm not saying mikhail shouldn't do it i'm just saying what have you seen to make you
00:19:50believe so let's see that would happen we're gonna go back to that let's go back to the play so
00:19:54here
00:19:54we have by the way this is a shot clock this is a shot clock thing there's seven seconds left
00:19:59eight
00:19:59before he's even making the initial move so that's another reason for hey can mikhail go baseline here
00:20:05can you but jalen brunson's like all right i trust myself here the crossover as you mentioned
00:20:10honestly like good move we have five seconds left on the shot clock at this point here's a step back
00:20:15you have space this is a look closing out without fouling but he has enough space here to make the
00:20:21shot and has to fade back just a little bit not a lot not a lot he goes pretty much
00:20:25straight up but
00:20:26just a tad bit because of the length of isaiah stewart and then you'll see what happens cat should
00:20:31have given him more space here um that's a small detail but still good look it just like when you
00:20:40have
00:20:40mitchell robinson you can like this is why he's there to bail you out of things yeah and he he
00:20:45has
00:20:45a good man again no no jalen duran paul reed is in the game with isaiah stewart but with isaiah
00:20:51stewart
00:20:51on the switch that takes away some size from the glass so mitchell robinson has to have the awareness
00:20:55to take advantage of that and he does here as as high as the star thompson could jump and as
00:21:00physical
00:21:01as kate cunningham could also be on both ends of the floor like this is just a great putback but
00:21:05still
00:21:05making jalen brunson work like that that's something you like if you're the pistons that
00:21:09the knicks have to try to navigate through if they play each other in the conference finals or even
00:21:13before that yeah but again to me those are you listen you don't want mitchell robinson hurting you
00:21:19also if you're the pistons but these are huge wins to me for the pistons if you have oh boy
00:21:25jalen
00:21:25brunson let's play taking tough shots now the last play that we have this is at the end of the
00:21:31second
00:21:31quarters you can see in the second match between the two teams this is when it was starting to get
00:21:35bad next fans so sorry for the ptsd but jalen brunson this is what you need to to know going
00:21:41into not just this game but again this is a potential conference finals match both of these
00:21:47teams are good enough to get to the conference finals we know this what you got to know here
00:21:50is 4.5 seconds left the pistons down 21 by the way are up 21 they are well aware of
00:21:57who the knicks
00:21:58are trying to get the ball to here this is this to me and what you'll see here is as
00:22:02much about
00:22:02great defensive awareness for a team that is ranked second in the league in defense this is awareness
00:22:07right now maybe you want to say give it up here but we'll see what happens let's let this play
00:22:12here's the czar here's ron holland here's jalen brunson here's mitchell robinson who you want to set
00:22:18a screen here you do he doesn't jalen gets the ball we have two seconds
00:22:27i mean there's a behind the back now paul reed is on him like you saw how many defenders on
00:22:35this
00:22:35one sequence it's the end of the it's the end of the game uh end of the half excuse me
00:22:40but i mean
00:22:42this is as well as you can defend except there was a pass to be made now i don't know
00:22:45how good
00:22:45of a shot that would have been but once you get boom right here yep who's wide open mikhail bridges
00:22:52there you go because you're not giving mitchell robinson if you want some of y'all because it's
00:22:57the end of the quarter but yeah you're not you're not giving this to mitchell robinson he's cutting
00:23:01he's mitchell robinson is doing what he's supposed to do he's filling the gaps mikhail is here and he's
00:23:05in position like to his credit open to his credit he is he is right here one second left that's
00:23:10enough
00:23:10that's enough time jaylen doesn't even have his head right here 1.3 he can get it to him and
00:23:15he can get
00:23:15a shot off yeah so jalen brunson here i think this is a bit of him forcing the action against
00:23:21the length
00:23:21that he'd be seeing you also wonder how much it was in his head that he'd been frustrated by the
00:23:25length throughout at this point in the game where he was having an off night and yeah when you have
00:23:30to worry about a sir thompson he running right into paul reed and he says get that out of here
00:23:35that was a very fitting end to what was a terrible offensive first half for the knicks in that game
00:23:43uh against against the pistons so a really good a really good job there um by the pistons they're able
00:23:51to to shut down jaylen brunson it just shows you with the length what can happen when you see that
00:23:56time and time again like it's gonna make you adjust to it now the last thing the last play that
00:24:01we have
00:24:02in terms of the length that i'm gonna have you have you look at we'll bring it up again this
00:24:05is
00:24:05gonna be one where you're gonna see jaylen brunson get a bucket but man did he work for this bucket
00:24:11here we go he worked for this bucket we have we have other we have other stuff we're gonna get
00:24:15to as
00:24:16well this was right before this was at the end of the second quarter this is one of the four
00:24:19buckets
00:24:20he hit but but this is again this is something that's gonna be targeted so we'll start a slow
00:24:26motion here landry shamit sets the screen assar thompson is still here right on his hip right right
00:24:32right with him the entire time doesn't reach that that is fantastic like i just that's ridiculous
00:24:39fantastic defense to move your feet like that it is great defensive footwork against a player
00:24:43who is great offensive footwork this is this is fantastic for people watching just look at the
00:24:49body control by sword thompson and how his hand he's never reaching look not reaching not at all
00:24:54i'm right with you that's into it and then he contests the shot and look how tough that shot is
00:25:00hard he's turned he just turned 23 also like to have those instincts to all right i'm just not going
00:25:05to be handsy and like last year he had a couple of silly fouls in that playoff series which he's
00:25:11trying
00:25:11to avoid now but this is just this is a great shot but man to your point with seven seconds
00:25:16left
00:25:18i mean you tip your hat that's what you say yeah like josh hart's here but this is an easy
00:25:23close out
00:25:24for tobias harris landry shamit doesn't have a look here mitchell robinson i mean he's trying to
00:25:29be a lob threat here mikhail bridges is just chilling with dennis jenkins on the corner
00:25:35and see here's the thing we've seen brunson make this move off of this and hit these kind of shots
00:25:41it's just different when you have physicality and length coming at you in waves time and time again
00:25:48every play again this is why i would say to nicks fans for this first part that we talked about
00:25:52with
00:25:53how the pistons defend jalen brunson sometimes you don't have to trip over all of it because what you
00:25:58want to see is what are the adjustments and we'll see some of that on thursday night we'll probably see
00:26:02some of that again if these two teams meet in the playoffs what are then the adjustments that are
00:26:06going to come for jalen brunson and also the pistons they're going to expect adjustments from
00:26:11jalen brunson too so when i look at this brian you know what do i think jalen brunson could do
00:26:17some of it is you know trust the teammates a little bit more in open situations like mikhail bridges but
00:26:23we got to see that happen too because if i'm saying it you don't think he's thinking it i think
00:26:26guys
00:26:27got to get open too like part of part of the issue here is like we're who's cutting like who's
00:26:33moving
00:26:33without the ball you're not seeing a lot of standing and watching yeah who's trying to be
00:26:37a target look it's a it's a two-pronged thing because i do think jalen brunson especially against
00:26:41the pistons like you need to make a more concerted effort to play make for others but at the same
00:26:47time guys have to be able to be play make for you know like moving without the ball and trying
00:26:53to get
00:26:54open and you know maybe the team needs to draw more sets that have more off-ball screening action
00:26:58so that you can create that movement that motion against the pistons the pistons are still going to
00:27:03defend well but you have to like not make it easy for them because if you're just standing around
00:27:08that just plays right into their hands in terms of the physicality and you're not providing those
00:27:12opportunities and those windows for maybe a miscommunication a broken play where you get a
00:27:16backdoor layup or just a wide open three-point shot like you're not you're not creating enough of those
00:27:21opportunities regardless of what personnel is actually on the floor like it i don't care who's
00:27:25out like you have to be able to generate just good offensive looks regardless because if you're the
00:27:31deepest team and everyone's saying like oh this is the deepest team in eastern conference and you
00:27:34and i are on record saying hey this this is a team that should win the eastern conference but
00:27:39i think you're like i think the knicks are going to win the east and i'm like i think the
00:27:44knicks are
00:27:44going to win the east you know like it's a little bit more like i need i need to see
00:27:49i need to see
00:27:49it consistently and if they're not moving without the ball how are you going to generate consistently
00:27:56great offense with all the offensive talent you have yeah yeah and i think that's got to be the
00:28:00adjustment that's the biggest thing i think you have to see against the pistons when you know they're
00:28:03going to guard jalen brunson like this they're daring you to be more dynamic with your offense in
00:28:07terms of moving out the ball so now you have to go make that adjustment so if guys move we've
00:28:12seen
00:28:12jalen brunson find them we saw that just now against philly in the last game before the break
00:28:16where the knicks were cutting now some of that was also a lot of aggressive trapping by nick nurse
00:28:21but the knicks made the right read so again it's the same thing i'm talking about what do i always
00:28:24say players got to have agency agency yep so now you have to you see this trust me if we're
00:28:30doing
00:28:30this film study mike brown and company they're doing the same thing they've probably done it they've been
00:28:35looking at this they're looking at what happened in the last game they're talking about how do we
00:28:38adjust to this and i think the biggest adjustment is going to be guys moving with it now speaking of
00:28:43moving we're going to move along yeah to the next thing that we're going to talk about jalen brunson
00:28:46if you can't see him we're covering him but he's about to take this shot he's about to jalen brunson
00:28:50taking a shot here in the corner um now you're able to see it and the next thing we're going
00:28:55to talk
00:28:55about that the knicks absolutely have stunk at against the pistons this season in two games
00:29:01transition defense people man now we know a lot of long threes you sometimes get a lot of long rebounds
00:29:07it's very great opportunities for teams to leak out but for those who've played hoops and know
00:29:13what's the number one thing when someone gets the ball and is looking to go out what does your coach
00:29:17say to you stop ball yep you're going to see a couple of plays where that did not happen there
00:29:23are a lot of culprits on this they got to stop the ball watch this play unfold jalen brunson misses
00:29:28one of his 16 shots that he missed on the night uh here in this in this game and this
00:29:34did not go
00:29:35well so brian let this let this play here uh brunson is going to miss the shot first of all
00:29:41look at look at the bodies in the paint like
00:29:46like bridges under the basket yeah bridges under the basket he's getting in position duncan
00:29:50robinson's crashing lander shavitz over here uh because somebody has to be back because he knows
00:29:55what's coming there's a tip there's duncan robinson there's a recognition that should never happen i mean
00:30:03that should never happen that passion never ever happen at all whatsoever right when you're looking
00:30:12at that and listen you're gonna see now look brunson gets beat right there i swear we're not
00:30:18picking up a kill brunson gets beat but but bridges has to look at that and understand to pick up
00:30:24his
00:30:24man he's jogging there bridges is jogging right he's jogging look look here he's not even looking at
00:30:29assar thompson nope and brunson notices this and tries to sprint to catch up to him but assar thompson
00:30:35is just too fast there you go he gone not even running full speed so where's mikhail here mikhail
00:30:43we're back up here he's he's seeing the ball not seeing his man well he's not seeing the man that's
00:30:48the other thing that the coaches will tell you at any level see ball and then the other part of
00:30:53that
00:30:53see the man not seeing his man and and i mean this is also one it's a dangerous pass but
00:30:59it's a pass
00:30:59that should never be made right stroking perfectly into the middle it's a good pass it's not a pass
00:31:05you want but against what the defense was giving you right you gotta you gotta make it was the right
00:31:10play duncan robinson made the right play for if you have the right teammate you can throw this pass if
00:31:14you have assar thompson you can throw this pass duncan robinson decent playmaker actually for his
00:31:18position don't look at the assist numbers just like watch basketball um good pass here and
00:31:24mikhail just gets sort of burned here landry shammon sort of burned completely yes this is this
00:31:31is i don't know randy moss versus quentin jammer or something um i could have thought of a more
00:31:39less dated reference um and then landry shammon here on tobias harris i mean look he has to account
00:31:45for the corner shooter so pick your poison right yeah that's it that that's all mikhail bridges and
00:31:51there was no resistance on the ball to stop the ball so now here's another one we're gonna look at
00:31:55uh here with this play and you'll see uh more of the same lack of stopping the ball and
00:32:01miscommunication here so that's just a turnover right here right i mean just poke this loose
00:32:07brunson was trying to create the space with the off arm here and certain times just reached around
00:32:12yeah knocked it away and so here we go now we're off to the races no resistance i mean
00:32:19mikhail bridges didn't stop the ball because this is what you don't want this was a one
00:32:23a two-on-one fast break for detroit right yeah and mikhail bridges didn't even force
00:32:29his man to give up the ball i mean there's javante green could just hit duncan robinson here
00:32:34theoretically but but that's what makes it worse that's what makes it worse you want to make
00:32:39give up the ball there that's what and i'm telling you any coach would be mad at this like at
00:32:43least
00:32:43because you never know what could happen could it be a turnover it could be a you know errant any
00:32:48kind of errant pass you get a deflection anything could happen when you stop ball and force an extra
00:32:52pass this wasn't even forced this is way too comfortable for javante green i mean duncan robinson's
00:32:59even more open here as both got both him both mikhail and douche and javante was like nah we're good
00:33:05nah we're good we're good i mean he's he's stronger than both them dudes but he's like
00:33:09we're fine i'm taking this but there's no resistance and there's not at the point of attack that's that's
00:33:13that's the thing i'm saying like you didn't even force a pass and then i guess you could say it's
00:33:19somewhat of a difficult shot but not really once he got past you by the way if he misses who's
00:33:23right
00:33:23there a star thompson and kate cutting like you know because mitchell robinson couldn't get back in
00:33:30time but that mikhail i mean i swear we're not picking on him but but but those are two now
00:33:36he
00:33:36will not be involved in this play that you'll see this is not on him this is not on him
00:33:40but we will
00:33:40we will take a look at this one as you can see all these gonna be off turnovers or missed
00:33:44shots
00:33:44and so josh hart with the ball right here uh about it to free throw line top of the key
00:33:49let's let this rock uh here for josh hart tries to make a tough pass to mikhail we'll look at
00:33:54that in a
00:33:54sec and here comes no resistance at all now you might say you know mikhail tried to get back into
00:34:01that play not to blame him but josh hart no here's the problem nobody picks up cunningham nobody picks
00:34:08up cunningham here first of all i don't i don't know what this is uh what's your man's name from
00:34:14pit
00:34:14who threw them five intercept the peter man oh is it him he threw all the interceptions we ain't got
00:34:20it
00:34:20we ain't got to do that do that oh my god this is just not a great look duncan robinson
00:34:26just
00:34:26seemingly finding all the loose balls in this in these clips cade i mean he does beat mikhail bridges
00:34:33here but we're this is not this is fear was coming out of the play yeah josh hart's got to
00:34:37pick him
00:34:38got to get better angle here and and step up pick it up that's on josh hart here brunson yeah
00:34:43yeah 100%
00:34:44brunson's with a star here and then you have guys trying to get back
00:34:48and diowara and mitch robinson cade he could pass this off to a star maybe for a lot but this
00:34:56is
00:34:56probably the better play he gets to the strong hand here he gets this right hand away from mikhail
00:35:01away from josh hart not the easiest look no but he's not comfortable not too comfortable not not much
00:35:08resistance here that's a lay that's a practice shot for him yeah best practice shot all right moving on
00:35:13to this next one here danish jenkins yeah right here out hustling mitch robinson robinson for the
00:35:19ball now jordan clarkson stop jordan clarkson jordan clarkson jordan clarkson here he gotta stop the
00:35:27ball now he's got a poor angle here he doesn't move his feet he's not squared up with him at
00:35:32all
00:35:33whatsoever this is just a poor angle and from this point right here folks it was a wrap this is
00:35:39where
00:35:39you should have known it was a wrap on this play like any chance you thought look at that he's
00:35:43too
00:35:43comfortable he got he got he got him he got the step got the step he's way too comfortable and
00:35:48look
00:35:48the physicality too and this is where you know it's even bad even worse so i'll say batter which is
00:35:53not
00:35:53a word even worse jordan clarkson's completely turned around now his hips have turned completely
00:35:59turned around jalen brunson's like oh man i gotta get into this and i gotta see if i can try
00:36:03to get a
00:36:04steal or charge or charge but he doesn't have time to move over tobias is also wide open here
00:36:09don't want to leave him open from three nope which is why jalen brunson's now caught in no man's land
00:36:13mikhail's here i mean paul reed he's not dirk novisky but but you got to respect it he can shoot
00:36:19he can shoot and danish jenkins is like oh yeah cool you know what and i'm gonna go to my
00:36:25right hand
00:36:25which you're not supposed to do on that side of the basket but nobody's there for any resistance
00:36:29and that is just way too easy and he gets the foul and he gets the foul let's just like
00:36:35this is all
00:36:36on jordan clarkson there's no resistance here and i get right there when he's about 30 feet out
00:36:42jordan clarkson's turned to the side and then he got completely turned on his hip once he got into
00:36:48the paint and that's again in all this stuff with transition nobody stopped the ball we just watched
00:36:54three plays and nobody has stopped the ball at all whatsoever let's look let's look at another play
00:37:01uh that leads to a transition from the first game from the first game i'm sorry this is not for
00:37:07a
00:37:07transition disaster that was the end of our transition disaster so let's just move right
00:37:10on to the next thing back cuts which is cutting the pistons have killed the knicks with cutting
00:37:18and in the first watch party we did brian caught on this early in the first quarter and was on
00:37:24it
00:37:24and last year in the playoffs oh that's true it was it was during the playoffs jalen duran top of
00:37:31the
00:37:31key again we haven't seen jalen duran against the knicks this season jalen duran top of the key
00:37:35who's averaging more assists last year um per 36 minutes top of the key and then assar thompson cut
00:37:41ron holland cut tobias harris cut it was mostly assar thompson and ron holland um and they even did a
00:37:47little bit of this with like isaiah stewart yep back cut because they're like it's it's towns you know
00:37:53it might be bridges who doesn't want to like defend in the paint you know you want him on the
00:37:57perimeter
00:37:58back cutting into these layups and then but here's why i try not to pick up we're trying
00:38:03not to pick up quarantine but here's why here's why this works for this detroit team they're not a
00:38:07great shooting shooting team yeah so they have to generate their offense in easy ways and this is
00:38:12how they're going to get they attack the basket it gets they're going to attack the basket and
00:38:15they're going to see constant cutting from their wings and their bigs and you see this right here on
00:38:19this play right here and listen it starts also with being able to get into the paint this is their
00:38:24version of sprays they're spraying it i won't call it a spray they're looking for quick zip passes
00:38:29they can hit you darts around the basket darts around the basket yeah go with that and this is
00:38:34what they're going to do and kate cunningham is the engine of that so kate cunningham is here look at
00:38:38how he gets deep into the paint he draws two defenders yep og he has beat and mikhail comes with
00:38:44the help there's a sar open just just rolling like easily rolling with him so mr robinson's like well
00:38:52i got a guard isaiah stewart so kat are you gonna get him okay and paul reed's like cool i
00:38:57can i can
00:38:59cut now he's out of bounds yeah and they missed that yeah totally missed because if you look it
00:39:07doesn't appear that he has his full foot like i don't know i can't i can't see if the back
00:39:11of his
00:39:11foot is off because you have to have one foot in in order to to get back into the play
00:39:16so yeah he's
00:39:18that that that was a missed call there's undoubtedly a missed call there yeah like the quality is not
00:39:22amazing but it looks as if he got away with one here still the principal stands and he is way
00:39:29too
00:39:29open for this play not because he's out of bounds he's barely out of bounds uh with one foot at
00:39:35least
00:39:35and then once he gets there i mean it's too easy of a finish for him for somebody who can
00:39:40finish and
00:39:41paul reed by the way he he puts up some big numbers when they're shorthanded like he he's a he's
00:39:46their
00:39:46third big but he can be highly highly productive uh in limited time if he needs to be so these
00:39:54back
00:39:54cuts are a theme that we have to continue to watch we have another one here yeah another one here
00:39:58and
00:39:58you're gonna see yeah this is gonna be very interesting to see too because watch you've got
00:40:03isaiah stewart at the top of the viewpoint now it's him because not jaylen duran not jaylen is not playing
00:40:07it's not playing right but like you're also gonna be worried about kate getting the ball and you're
00:40:11seeing that here landry sham it's on him don't love that the screen right so here we go let's let
00:40:17let's let this let this rock here area hook 40 you're in for an adventure okay the not really a
00:40:24dribble handoff to duncan robinson but the same function wide open here by the way because josh
00:40:30hart has to collapse in why why are three people on duncan robinson that's how you know not at the
00:40:35three-point line not at three by the way three you had duncan robinson 15 feet from the basket
00:40:39that's like i'm telling you i'm telling you this is happening in the next film session why is this
00:40:44happening why are you guys worried about duncan robinson not at the three-point line and you
00:40:49turn him into brian said the underrated playmaker well look at this aria hukporti over commits
00:40:53mohammedia war over commits i mean that that's a pretty sick pass that's a pretty sick pass he does
00:40:58this like he he really does this sometimes off the dribble you just don't want him doing it a lot
00:41:02isaiah stewart just roll the entire time and you got four guys in the paint but
00:41:06the shot's already up and the shot's already up nobody can help um because you had three guys on
00:41:13duncan robinson right at the free throw line just just and it's awareness and listen i also we talk
00:41:19about this all season too it's like they over help and then other guys are just like yo it's a
00:41:23three on
00:41:24one against me now some of this i would like to keep of note brian said at the top he
00:41:28did not like
00:41:29that landry shamit was playing on cade and then you have mohammedia war and ari a rookie
00:41:33and ariel hukporti a second year player on the floor so i'm just saying the defensive awareness
00:41:39not at the highest on the floor for the knicks but it's right it's it's like you guys have to
00:41:44kyp you got to know your personnel duncan robinson is not the guy you want to send three guys at
00:41:48at the fitola you almost get away with the two because diowara if you just deflect this out of
00:41:53bounds you're good but you're good you get a stop and then you get too much to recover from
00:41:58yeah and he was late and brunson can't i mean there's nothing brunson could have done all you
00:42:02could do is strip the ball foul the hell out of him or the best thing you'd hope is that
00:42:06somehow
00:42:06beef stew kicked it out to a sore thompson but he knows that's not a good idea he knows that
00:42:12we know
00:42:12that he knows that we got a few more a couple more here um in terms of cutting and man
00:42:18you're gonna
00:42:19look we saw this in the playoffs and they do it again here again cade cunningham with the ball we
00:42:24know how dangerous he can be you want og on him that's fine mitch is here he's meeting he's meeting
00:42:29kate at the level isaiah stewart okay you're kind of mitch's responsibility mikhail bridges is helping
00:42:37jalen brunson's here with a start thompson and here's javante green down here in the corner and
00:42:44javante green's like i know what i have to do get to the basket and that's a great pass i
00:42:51mean a little
00:42:51bit off to the right well yeah a little bit off because actually cunningham should probably put it
00:42:56more towards the baseline yeah easier for him to go right to the basket but it was the right
00:43:00person to get it to the brunson's almost able to get back into that play but he's not javante green
00:43:06just beats him to the ball yep i mean it's asking jalen brunson to do a lot too uh because
00:43:11mikhail
00:43:13overplays this a little bit but mitchell robinson at this point he was fine here but now
00:43:21he's not he's not looking at isaiah stewart at all he needed to drop back and look at where
00:43:25isaiah stewart was and that would have made bridges not have to overhelp but he did they almost get
00:43:29away with it too because the pass is not the cleanest but i mean at this point because now look
00:43:34at isaiah stewart he's like he does his job boxing out i didn't get the ball cool here's your screen
00:43:40or your box out assists if you want to call it that call it that yeah and there you go
00:43:45that's an easy
00:43:47dunk easy two points and this is how the pistons have to generate their offense because as again
00:43:52we said they're not a good three-point shooting team so they have to generate their offense in
00:43:56this fashion a lot of your best personnel on the floor too like deuce is there jalen brunson's there
00:44:00mikhail og uh mitchell robinson you can't blame cat for that one yeah it's just it's just it's just
00:44:06simple over helping now we got one more uh to to look at this is the last one last one
00:44:11this is yeah
00:44:11this is one more to look at in terms of them cutting okay um so and then we'll we'll go
00:44:15to
00:44:16uh how the pistons are attacking jalen brunson so when we when we look at this one here again
00:44:26you're gonna get you keep getting guys to either over help on the ball and then the pistons are doing
00:44:32a great job of reading and reacting which is what you're supposed to do so let's let this one play
00:44:36here too we got jan danish jenkins on the ball here he gets into the paint see the
00:44:41pistons version we call what do we call them darts not sprays yeah get two feet into the paint
00:44:45and look for who's cutting right and this this is where speed works here danish jenkins should not
00:44:51be able to split between fast he should not too fast for tyler kolek yeah too fast for kolek but
00:44:56kolek kolek's fine here kolek's fine close fine and listen danish jenkins cardinal sin you do not want
00:45:01to jump in the air and pass but he does this anyway it's a sweet pass but it is a
00:45:05good pass but it's a
00:45:08mcculler jr yeah ivy no longer with the team but the principle remains because we know about their
00:45:15back cutting and this isn't even a back cut he's just cutting he's cut to the spot come come right
00:45:21in there mcculler colors so late he did why because mcculler no mcculler is doing what you talked about
00:45:26it's what we talked about in transition he saw the ball his eye look at where his eyes are yeah
00:45:30his eyes
00:45:31are on the ball not on his man and ivy reads that it's like oh your head turned yep gotcha
00:45:36look at look at where
00:45:36he's at now one oh shit that's the moment that's the moment when he knew he messed up and ivy
00:45:42has
00:45:42that and it's like oh this is free lunch we're gonna get two points right here and that's all she
00:45:46wrote right that that that is that is just a lack of awareness there mcculler i don't want to kill
00:45:52the
00:45:52kid yeah he is playing his first full season of basketball yeah so that's that's where you have it
00:45:57here now the last thing before we get out of here that you gotta look at we talked about how
00:46:01the
00:46:01pistons use length on jalen brunson to make things tough for them but then also about how do they
00:46:06attack to jalen brunson and i want people to keep something in mind here attacking isn't just
00:46:11one-on-one and going at somebody it's how you bring people into action and you're going to see
00:46:16different plays that we chose here where some of it's going to be the ball handler going right at
00:46:20jalen brunson and we know jalen brunson's an undersized point guard we understand all the
00:46:24limitations there but then the other times where the pistons smartly got him into actions yes and it
00:46:30actually helped them generate really good shots particularly good three-point shots and you're going to see
00:46:36that because it forces guys to over help yep and this is the thing about jalen brunson carl anthony
00:46:42towns uh and we'll see how they attack some of the other guys on this team but they're going to
00:46:48try to
00:46:49make the knicks over help because they know they've been prone to do that at times less so lately because
00:46:53the defense has been better lately but still over the course of the season their body of work suggests
00:46:57that this is something that they need to work on okay so we have a sar thompson here we have
00:47:01jalen
00:47:01brunson here and we're inside three-point line this this is 2005 basketball right here start
00:47:09like starting the offensive play from here with 13 on the shot the placing also looks like 2005
00:47:14like this this takes me back to my childhood baby right here like this is great oh okay so we
00:47:19have
00:47:20k cutting have coming off the screen from isaiah stewart og good ball now great yes great ball
00:47:26denial here um duncan robinson who is going to be moving without the ball ton when if they play each
00:47:32other in the playoffs and probably we'll see it again especially on a young guy kevin mcculler jr
00:47:37he's running around here but watch jalen brunson in the defense i mean all that to just okay we have
00:47:48more look at how they create more space on this drive here right because now mitchell robinson has to
00:47:54account for isaiah stewart so he's worried over here so now isaiah stewart i think so we're such
00:47:58a high q basketball player he's going to pull him away here it doesn't put up gaudy numbers but he
00:48:02does a lot of little things that lead to winning which is part of why the defense and offense has
00:48:06been so good and then duncan robinson's here is like okay i'm going to bring kevin mcculler from one
00:48:11side of the court all the way to the other side of the court deuce mcbride's here with jaden ivy
00:48:15has to
00:48:16account for that and now i saw i was like cool i have a one-on-one opportunity against jalen
00:48:21brunson
00:48:22and he just bumps him there's a spin goes up top the floater i mean this is just this is
00:48:31just
00:48:31really good offense just really physical good drive the other thing too and we talk about length on the
00:48:37other side of the ball brian but we know a sir thompson who's not a great offensive player but
00:48:42this is a kind of quality shot for him where he's able to use his athleticism and length and get
00:48:46right
00:48:46over jalen brunson no there was no wasted motion there but the spacing around is what matters to
00:48:51what you said and so even getting kevin mcculler to go through the back screen that isaiah stewart
00:48:57is setting and now you just have a sir thompson rising up with jalen brunson and deuce mcbride
00:49:03two smaller guards there mitch can't come over and do anything and help it's too late the little thing
00:49:08isaiah stewart pulled him away just enough to take him out of this play yep just enough and now that
00:49:13that was huge there so that's jalen brunson being attacked if you want to say but i think the bigger
00:49:18thing to point out is what you mentioned what was happening away from jalen brunson that made that
00:49:22a quality shot for a you know below average offensive player in the nba but he got himself a
00:49:28quality shot there who could finish who you want who that's where he wants to shoot from basically
00:49:32absolutely and so he got a quality shot for what he wants now this is an example of what i'm
00:49:36talking
00:49:36about before this is where jalen brunson coming into the action and the knicks having to over help
00:49:42and it resulting in a quality shot from downtown actually for the pistons so watch this here because
00:49:50you're going to see mikhail bridges on kate cunningham but what do you see here who's popping
00:49:56out to the top and robinson to to show you got stewart and you got robinson here again so now
00:50:02here's jalen brunson but look look at what duncan robinson is doing he's like i give a little bit of
00:50:08a
00:50:08clip to mikhail bridges shooter flare out to the line brunson here watching right does not have his
00:50:15eye on duncan robinson left his man and this is a very well this is a very simple design play
00:50:20just
00:50:21gave a little bit of that slipped right out now brunson it's too late too late if you're watching
00:50:25this it's too late yeah and he wasn't watching this man and there you go and now duncan robinson is
00:50:32wide open for the three i mean that's as open as you're going to get in nba it's a tough
00:50:36recovery
00:50:37for jalen brunson he's already in shooting motion by the time jalen brunson's trying to close out
00:50:42and you give a shooter like that time that's what's going to happen so duncan robinson in first person
00:50:47shooter mode and here you go this is somebody who has a seven inch height advantage here and also
00:50:5540 percent from three again this year for his career also 40 percent yeah that's just too easy
00:51:03way that's it's a very simple there's nothing there's nothing extreme about that play but it's
00:51:07when you're looking at this defensively if you're jalen brunson it's like you didn't need to over help
00:51:11you just fought but the key thing is there is you're now coming around beef stew who mitcher robinson's on
00:51:19and you're a little bit worried about that there right but had jalen brunson not stopped here see
00:51:25that's where he rested jalen brunson just followed him through he's worried that mikhail bridges is
00:51:30then going to come through and get clipped off by isaiah stewart and that would free up cunningham
00:51:34so i get the deception here but you got to stay with your man you got to read that and
00:51:38stay with
00:51:38your man you got to see that and realize look that's going to have to be communication between mitch
00:51:43and mikhail bridges what they're going to have to do i cannot let the shooter get that wide open
00:51:47yeah he is literally the most dangerous person in the situation yeah and by the way i and this is
00:51:52where the the other thing about a potential playoff series that could be concerning is how do you hide
00:51:57jalen brunson in this series even cat to an extent but how do you hide jalen brunson in this series
00:52:01because i don't really want him on duncan robinson because of what we're looking at here and i don't
00:52:06want jalen brunson to have to work that hard because if you're on duncan robinson you're going to be
00:52:10running off screens the entire game because jb bickerson is going to be like oh wait what okay this he's
00:52:16going to be drawing plays up like this the entire time also the height advantage like you can only
00:52:21contest with so much there right so then on top of that it's like okay do you put him on
00:52:25assar
00:52:25thompson well assar thompson is not going to shoot but he's going to drive like he did before or you're
00:52:29going to have him in those actions where you get him enough space where you can have those quality
00:52:32drives you don't want him on kade you like ron holland like it's just it's going to be difficult
00:52:36and that's one of the pressure points that they're going to be able to or try to at least exploit
00:52:41uh as we
00:52:42have another play here but that's that's something that i'm really really going to be watching for
00:52:45yeah now this is the last thing we're going to look at but i would say very much guys keep
00:52:49in
00:52:50mind the same thing that we saw in the last play okay keep that in mind here and again you're
00:52:55going
00:52:55to watch this is where brian brian makes a great point do you want jalen brunson on duncan robinson
00:53:00that seems like it will be favorable but bigger staff and the coaching staff of detroit they're going to
00:53:08look to see how they can exploit that and they're going to make brunson work now you think about this
00:53:12too
00:53:13in what we talked about the top of the show with brunson seeing all the length but if you're also
00:53:17making him work harder on defense and he's being worn down for length that all kind of combines
00:53:22together so the knicks have to find better ways to either hide him help quicker communicate better
00:53:27on defense so jalen brunson's not as worn down offensively that is going to be the key the other
00:53:33thing you want to do is be more aggressive offensively so maybe you can get some of their
00:53:37key defenders with length like in a sir thompson which worked for the knicks in the playoffs
00:53:40yeah get him into foul trouble yeah that can happen too but let's look at this last play before
00:53:44we get out of here keep your eye on jalen brunson and duncan robinson okay kate cunningham has the
00:53:49ball but look right there past cat here at the top left of your screen down here they're right there
00:53:53okay now keep your eye on that jalen brunson doing pretty good here some ball denial duncan robinson never
00:54:00stops moving there's a screen isaiah stewart again y'all gonna be tired of this man there is again
00:54:06it's a little play brian talked about this but this it's a great screen mitch knows okay i don't
00:54:13have to worry about that i'm keep my eye on the ball i see my man is there but now
00:54:16it's a little
00:54:17thing brunson did a great job of dying the ball and look duncan robinson never stopped moving yeah
00:54:23he could have stopped right there and stayed comfortable at that spot nope brunson gonna try
00:54:27to get a screen now i'm gonna go to my right move right there they're not calling that a moving
00:54:32screen
00:54:32by the way no like that that that's not that's not gonna be called a moving screen like i know
00:54:38people are gonna say oh he moved or whatever but like if this is a moving screen then a lot
00:54:42of
00:54:42screens in the end you'll be called moving screens every position yeah like the nba is so fast that
00:54:47the screens almost have to be moving now in a lot of different instances but this is what you call
00:54:51a
00:54:52little chip right the chip works brunson's fighting to get over it he's isaiah stewart's really strong
00:54:57and then he's trying to recover the other way wide but this is duncan robinson knowing if i keep
00:55:03moving i'm gonna make jalen brunson work either he or mitchell robinson have to come out here now
00:55:07jalen brunson gives maximum effort to close out the effort's great here the effort is fantastic here
00:55:12but if you see in that space it was already too late and it was too late and brunson comes
00:55:17here and
00:55:17then fouls him and and and that that that was it yeah because it was too that it's little things
00:55:23it's
00:55:23a screen by isaiah stewart it's the constant movement by duncan robinson here and the quick rise
00:55:28and fire but duncan robinson made that play work this is not about lack of effort for jalen brunson
00:55:33we're not gonna kill him on that it's that you gotta find ways to help him a little bit now
00:55:38could
00:55:38mitch step up right there possibly but then but then you're forced to what's what's your problem
00:55:43right here isaiah stewart uh-huh back cutting by the way we already rolling to the basket we already
00:55:48gave duncan robinson props that he can do a little bit of playmaking and he could have hit him
00:55:52right there but because he had so much space and it's this much smaller guy because i think if
00:55:58jalen brunson was a taller guy he probably makes that pass yeah and then what probably happens is
00:56:03because you you could have a breakdown there just totally because kade here has og great duncan
00:56:09robinson here okay let's say he just makes his pass let's say mitchell robinson goes to contest like
00:56:13takes one more foot up to the level and then you have isaiah stewart here he gets the pass
00:56:19mikhail has to over help and then asar thompson's right there at the basket so it's mikhail having
00:56:23to guard both of them and if towns comes in and helps i mean yeah maybe you want to take
00:56:29your
00:56:29chances with paul reed having a corner shot here but you could take a chance with that but i think
00:56:35the lesson to be learned about this and how they're attacking jalen brunson is jalen brunson if he's going
00:56:39to be on duncan robinson is now going to know this man is never going to stop moving because yeah
00:56:45he could
00:56:45have stopped he could have he could have literally caught the ball behind isaiah stewart and rose from
00:56:49there but that extra bit of movement had to have the decision be made between brunson and mitchell
00:56:56robinson and you're right the way you look at that play it was going to be bad some way it
00:57:00was just
00:57:01about how it was whether it was going to be a three or two yeah that's what it came down
00:57:04to and the
00:57:04thing is it ended up being four because it was a three nfl and i know people are not scared
00:57:08of the
00:57:08pistons i understand there's there's people that's got yo i don't care it's a regular season you know
00:57:13beat them last year all this stuff and i'm not saying you should be like terrified of them or
00:57:18whatever but i do i do think it's way way way more compelling than some of the biggest nicks optimists
00:57:26think ultimately i i would say that the nicks can win that series like they could win a road game
00:57:32seven
00:57:32in detroit but i'm a little less confident that than say you are for example because i think detroit's
00:57:40defense is legitimately playoff good i and in this eastern conference like you may have somebody
00:57:49like that that can break through and win it all i don't know if they have enough offensive talent
00:57:52though to to keep up with the nicks offense that's that's where i have some concerns but do the nicks
00:57:56have enough defense to sort of stop that's the point you're getting to and i think i think it's a
00:58:00much much more compelling i think it's a six seven gamer if if we do get it and i think
00:58:05these are the
00:58:05two best teams in the east i think the nicks have the most talent in the east they have the
00:58:08deepest team
00:58:09now uh but that doesn't always mean you're going to go to the championship look it doesn't and what
00:58:14i'll say that we'll wrap on this you know and i think we'll see this thursday night and this is
00:58:19why we're glad we looked at this it shows you some of the problems there are problems for now you
00:58:23can
00:58:23make adjustments to problems things can change it does not have to be what you saw in the first two
00:58:27games um mike brown has shown a good job of being malleable this season but this is what he gets
00:58:33paid
00:58:33for the big bucks for and he'll be really judged about this in the playoffs but what i will say
00:58:36is
00:58:37if the nicks defense continues to trend in the way it has been over the last couple of weeks they
00:58:43are now 11th in defensive rating i've talked all season long can they get to that top eight to ten
00:58:47when they had that two and nine stretch it didn't look so good i wasn't feeling that great about it
00:58:52i feel a little bit better about where they are now we'll see how jose alvarado continues to fit in
00:58:57we'll see how jeremy sohan continues to fit in he's another guy i think you can use and throw
00:59:02at a cate cunningham that i think matters in a way so we will see how that all gets as
00:59:06the
00:59:06nicks try to get healthier with og ananobi uh hopefully with his toe avulsion and induce
00:59:10mcgride as well with the sports hernia so those are things you have to see but i think for the
00:59:14nicks to sort of close the gap and ease maybe some of the concerns you have i think it's fair
00:59:19to say
00:59:20their defense has to be better and you can't have the transition defense look like what we just saw
00:59:24there and the overall defensive resistance has to be better they have to pick up from taking care
00:59:29of jalen brunson who we know the pistons are still going to try to hunt even though offensively
00:59:35they are not great you can see what their offensive principles are and what they really
00:59:38want to do in this matchup so it's a fantastic one we'll see on thursday night what happens
00:59:44nicks pistons first game out of the break should be a fun one there'll be a live nicks watch party
00:59:48with myself and brian special guests as i said the ops are going to be in the building but we're
00:59:54going to
00:59:54be ready it's going to be a fun one that's going to do it hope you enjoyed this film breakdown
00:59:57let us know what you think are the biggest reason the knicks have struggled against the pistons
01:00:02is it some of the things we mentioned we didn't fully get into physicality but that is kind of
01:00:06involved in everything else yeah with that there we could have put that there but that is kind of
01:00:09a mix of some of the things that we saw here but those are these were the four things we
01:00:13thought
01:00:13that we could break down via the film that would be good for the people that's going to do it
01:00:17he's
