03:31I thought, my gosh, it was almost like he was too good to be true.

04:02And when I brought him to meet my family, I was so proud.
04:07I knew they were going to be impressed.
04:09I knew they would see what I saw, and I was showing him off to my family and gaining their
04:18acceptance and approval.
04:20When we were there, Philip seemed to be blending in fine with them.
04:25I saw him visiting with everybody.
04:28It seemed to be a good mood.
04:31I was thrilled.
04:32I thought he was getting along with everyone, but I was mistaken.
04:41After the family get-together, my brother said, hey, I wanted to let you know something.
04:47He said, you know, we really weren't impressed by Philip.
04:52He said, mom really wasn't.
04:56And I was confused.
04:58It did not portray that way to me.
05:02And I specifically asked him, what did Philip do or say that made you not like him or offended
05:11by him?
05:12He said, sis, I just felt he was a bad person.
05:20Very shocking.
05:21Very shocking.
05:22That's complete opposite of what I thought.
05:25And he said, mom thought exactly the same.
05:29And I said, did he say something?
05:31And he said, no.
05:33We just got that vibe from him.
05:35There was something wrong.
05:38I stayed with Philip because I didn't see what everybody else saw.
05:44I thought, maybe this one time, my family's wrong.
06:00I've been diabetic since I was 19, requiring insulin and frequent blood glucose checks.
06:08I believe with his nursing background, Philip wanted to care for me.
06:13He wanted to be checking to see if my blood sugar was good or if I needed to eat.
06:19He was very on top of that.
06:21It made me feel loved.
06:24It made me feel that he was very concerned and worried about me.
06:31One day, it was very odd.
06:37I became so sick, so sick, and I know my blood sugars were running high, and all I wanted to
06:49do was sleep.
06:51He appears to be taking care of me, he's checking my blood sugar, and oddly enough, he's giving me insulin.
07:01All I remember is him saying, I'm giving you some insulin.
07:06I remember nothing after that, nothing.
07:12I was in a haze the whole time I was there.
07:17I couldn't tell you remembering eating or anything.
07:24It's almost like he kept me there on purpose.
07:30In this state that I was in, it was almost as if I had been drugged.
07:39I was there, I'd say, at least three days.
07:47Looking back at that event, after everything I found out later, it's frightening to say,
07:56but I've thought about that, if he could have been taking advantage of me while I was there, unconscious for
08:04those three days.
08:08That does, that does cross my mind, and to this day, I still don't want to know.
08:15Do you think he's capable of that?
08:19I honestly think he's capable of that, yes.
08:25But again, I saw him as this great nurse, and he was taking care of me.
08:34So, I tried to overlook the bad.
08:43Phillip and I, we were together five months before I found out I was pregnant with the twins.
08:52I was excited, but I could tell he wasn't excited.
08:58I thought he was acting differently towards me because he really didn't want the babies, and it was kind of
09:04sad.
09:07And throughout the pregnancy, I didn't have anything for a child, a baby.
09:13And it was at that time when I told him I was going to go get some furniture and some
09:19clothes and diapers, he told me absolutely not.
09:24And I specifically asked him then why I couldn't go buy anything, and he told me the twins may not
09:34make it.
09:39I was shocked.
09:41I've never heard of anyone, a spouse or partner, saying that to any female that was pregnant, that they may
09:51not make it.
09:53When there was no reason to say that, he said it was because of my health.
10:01Just a generic response that he knew that they probably wouldn't make it.
10:09For me, seeing this side of him, it breaks my heart.
10:16It breaks my heart for my children that he could actually feel that way and not love them.
10:28But this goes deeper.
10:31A person that can say that to me is a monster, monster.
10:36I don't know that he was planning on doing something to me to lose the babies, but it made me
10:42even more protective over him.
10:45It did.
10:46I knew something wasn't right.
10:59My ex-husband was a police officer at the time in Carl Junction and came up to me one day
11:10and he said,
11:12I think there's some issues you need to look into because he's not who he seems.
11:19That Phillip had a past and I needed to do my research.
11:29No, this is not my Phillip.
11:31This is not Phillip that I know.
11:34Be careful.
11:36I assumed that he was just being jealous that I was having a good life and moving on without him.
11:45Even though I didn't fully believe my ex-husband, it was still in the back of my brain.
12:00That evening, I went to ask and I said to Phillip.
12:04Okay.
12:06My ex-husband said, I need to look at you.
12:10You know, and I just kind of laughed it off, but I was still looking.
12:14And I said, why would there be someone saying that you're a person of interest?
12:20He tensed up a little bit.
12:23He goes, I didn't do anything.
12:26He goes, the reason I am a person of interest is because when I lived in Branson West,
12:33there was a girl in Hollister I was hanging around with that he just went over to party and have
12:42sexual encounters with her
12:45and that she didn't really want to do anything with him.
12:49So he left and doesn't know what happened after.
12:52But the next morning, she ended up deceased.
13:08It was shocking when he told me that it was actually regarding someone that had died.
13:16The thought of him doing something so horrible with as kind as he is.
13:21No, it didn't.
13:22It didn't end up.
13:23And I still believe to this day, I didn't want to believe that.
13:30I continued to deny the signs and say, that's not Phillip.
13:51As I'm pulling up to my house, there are patrol cars outside, state patrol cars.
13:59And I can see they've already gone in.
14:03I walk in the door.
14:07It was like a punch in the stomach for me.
14:11Officers are in there just going through my stuff.
14:15Personal things of mine, even.
14:17I can't explain that feeling when someone is going through your life, your house, your things.
14:27If they're going to find something, what are they looking for exactly?
14:31I don't know.
14:34I realized the search had to do with Rebecca's murder and realizing, yes, they're looking for clues regarding Phillip and
14:44this murder.
14:48The officers had the things and left, and then it was just Phillip and I in the room.
14:56I was a nervous wreck.
14:59I was very unhinged at the time.
15:02And he is just appearing very confident to me.
15:08Like, they're not going to find anything.
15:12I did ask him, why are they still after you?
15:17What, what could be with this case that they're not finding or ruling you out?
15:25Why do they continue?
15:30And he responds like they've just got him singled out.
15:35Did you believe him?
15:40I partially believed him.
15:42It could happen to anyone.
15:43They could be singling him out, the wrong person.
15:47But I'm realizing at this point, something's not adding up.

17:54I was scared.
17:58Not knowing what the future held with me and them, but I was going to make it work.

18:14Looking back, it's hard to believe they could be so tiny and helpless.
18:20And I knew I wanted to protect them with all my might.
18:25Nothing else mattered in my life right then.
18:39I had no one else to turn to but Phillip Dodd.
18:43I hadn't seen anything violent from him.
18:47I didn't believe he could do something violent.
18:50And again, I got scared and thought I had to have him.
18:56And I'm sure that happens to a lot of people.
18:59Getting scared of their future without, you know, someone that's capable of working and
19:07help bringing in income.
19:09It would have been two or three weeks after the babies were born that Phillip and I got back together.
19:15I just wanted to fix it.
19:18He definitely knew I was vulnerable.
19:21He definitely knew that.
19:23And I do think he took advantage of the situation.
19:26But I was hoping that he would go back to the Phillip I knew and loved when I first met
19:33him.
19:34So caring and confident.
19:48We were over by this wedding place where you can walk in and walk out and get married.
19:54He's like, hey, you want to get married?
19:58It came up off the cuff.
20:01I had shorts on and tennis shoes.
20:04And I'll have to admit that did seem romantic and being spontaneous like that.
20:11Yes, that got my attention.
20:12That would be the man that I fell in love with.

20:18Okay, let's do it.
20:21And we walked in there and got married.
20:24I was full of hope.
20:35This was the wedding ring Phillip gave me.
20:42It meant so much to me.
20:46I've kept it all these years.
20:50I don't know why I lived a nightmare with him, but this represents my dreams I had with him.

21:20So one day, I was in the passenger seat.

21:25The twins were in the middle seat and his kids were in the seat back behind there, both of his
21:31boys.
21:32I found out Phillip had some severe money problems.
21:36It appeared it was all related to his gambling addiction.
21:41I make a comment offhand.
21:44He angers like that.
21:49I had never seen him that angry.
21:52I had seen him angry, but I'd never seen him like this.
21:56And I looked into his eyes.
21:59I didn't know who he was.
22:03The next thing I know, he's reached over from the driver's seat.
22:09He's got his hands around me choking me.
22:14I thought, what do I do?
22:18I've never had anyone choke me, so I didn't know what to do.
22:21You just automatically grab and try to get their hands off of you.
22:27I'm crying out, please.
22:29Please don't do this in front of these kids.
22:32I was screaming, get off of me.
22:35Please leave me alone.
22:38I was crying.
22:40And finally, he came too.
22:45And he took his hands off me.
22:54Very traumatic.
22:56I know it had to have been traumatic for his kids, seeing that.
23:00And to him, it was nothing.
23:03It's like, you deserved it.
23:06You got me mad, you deserved it.
23:09I'm still crying and screaming.
23:13I was saying, you son of a bitch, get out of my damn vehicle.
23:18I said, don't come around me or these twins again.
23:23Don't ever come around us.
23:24You will never see me or the twin.
23:25And I got the heck out of there.
23:33Knowing that he would attack me physically, then it was becoming real.
23:45It was becoming real.
23:49If the kids hadn't been in the car, I believe he would have taken it another step.
23:55I truly believe that.
23:58I don't, I, I don't think he would have held back.

24:05I think he would have came close.
24:13After that, I didn't feel safe.
24:16I was honestly scared for myself.
24:19Seeing him in such a rage, like I'd never seen before.
24:23He was getting worse.
24:27And I didn't want to fear what would, what would come next.
24:44I didn't think anything of the robbery.
24:47I heard about it, but I only listened because that was the bank Philip and I used.
24:53You know, I, I just kind of wonder why they picked that bank, but no, nothing really seemed abnormal.
25:02It was approximately a week later, Philip called me at work.
25:10Hello.
25:11And he said, I need to talk to you about something.
25:15He said, did you know anything about that, uh, bank robbery over there in Joblin?
25:24I said, I've, I've seen it.
25:27You know, I've seen it on the news.
25:29I, I don't know anything about it.
25:32He goes, um, that was me that did it.
25:40I was like, what?
25:44That was when he said, I need you to meet me tomorrow.
25:51At the park in Carl Junction.
25:54I will be there.
25:55I need to talk to you about something.
26:00Oh, I'm, I'm, I'm bewildered.
26:03I'm shocked.
26:05I didn't know what to say.
26:22I didn't want to call the cops just yet.
26:26But yes, I was planning on something.
26:30To be honest, I was scared to call the police.
26:35I cannot explain how scared I was because I knew if I called the police, I knew I would have
26:46hell to pay if he got out and came to my house.
26:55I wasn't, I wasn't willing to risk that.
27:00And he goes, uh, they're after me.
27:08He said, uh, someone from the FBI has been following me.
27:15And I said, really?
27:17He goes, yeah, they're, I, I can't get away from them.
27:21Everywhere I go, I, they're there.
27:27And I knew at that point, I knew I got him.
27:31I got him.
27:32He, he lost touch with reality.
27:37It was really bad, his paranoia at that time.
27:41And he goes, what do you think I should do?
27:46I said, Philip, you've got the FBI on you.
27:51We need to go turn you in to the police department.
27:55He sat there for a minute.
27:57I, I was shocked.
27:59He goes, you're right.
28:00I need to go ahead and turn myself in.
28:16And when I walked through the front door of the police station, and I say, I've got the, the person
28:24that you all are looking for that robbed the Joplin Metro Credit Union.
28:30She was like, she didn't, she thought it was a joke.
28:35I said, he's right here.
28:40You know, I don't think people routinely turn themselves in at the front desk.
28:46And she goes, I'll call a police officer right now.
28:50The police officer came up, verified who he was.
28:55He confirmed that he had robbed the bank, and they took him away in cuffs.
29:07I did speak to the patrolman for a moment, and he did tell me, he said,
29:13Sherry, we didn't have any prospects.
29:16We had no idea who had robbed that bank.
29:20And he probably would have gotten away with it.
29:24So he would have gotten away with it if you didn't convince him to turn himself in.
29:30Does that make this moment a little sweeter for you?

29:37It was the best day of my life.
29:55I went over there to get messed up and have sex with her, and, you know, but I didn't go
30:00over there with the intentions of forcing her to have sex or anything else.
30:05I just remember, I was trying to get her to stop fighting or whatever.
30:12I know I did it.
30:14I told you to tell her mother that I'd done it.
30:16I mean, I don't know why I'd done it.
30:18Maybe it was because she started to reject me.
30:22When he confessed to killing Rebecca Sutton, it was real then that he was a murderer, and I had been
30:32living with him.

30:57And again, I did it.

31:25I didn't realize seeing him in a picture like this would bother me so much.

31:51The thing that he had adamantly denied all those years, he did it.
32:00And then I really wanted to know how he did it.

32:13I felt the life drain out of me.
32:15You know, my stomach, I got sick because it made me mad.
32:18But I re-plifted my mind and I can't figure it out.
32:21I can't tell you why.
32:24Immediately, immediately went back to him choking me.
32:32And I thought to myself,
32:36I can't imagine this poor girl going through this and dying.
32:42Dying by his hands.
32:44And I had his hands around my throat.
32:48That just sent chills up and down my spine.

33:18This is Rebecca Sutton, this innocent-looking girl.
33:25This is who he murdered.
33:31Look at that. She doesn't, she didn't deserve that.
33:38Beautiful-looking girl.
33:40This young girl did not deserve to die by the hands of Philip.
