00:00:53Hello, welcome to the Champions League match of the day
00:00:56on a night of European football mayhem.
00:00:5918 games taking place simultaneously and every one of them has something riding on it.
00:01:06With us tonight in their flamboyant outfits, our Champions League analysts Stephen Warnock
00:01:11and Nader Manua alongside European football expert Julien Laurent.
00:01:16Right, before we get going, here's the table at the start of the night, so remember the
00:01:20top eight go through to the last 16 automatically, then the next 16 teams go into the playoffs,
00:01:26the bottom 12 are gone and eliminated altogether. So Arsenal and Bayern are the only teams already
00:01:32qualified for the last 16. For Real Madrid, Liverpool and Spurs, they know that a win tonight
00:01:38is enough to join them. And then there are eight teams on 13 points, so it's likely that
00:01:44they will fight it out for the remaining top eight spots. But not only will they want to
00:01:49win, they'll also want to make sure that their goal difference is good enough. And then at
00:01:52the other end of the table, only the bottom four are out. So it could get very interesting
00:01:57indeed, because three points separate Marseille in 19th, all the way down to Ajax in 32nd.
00:02:05Right, we're going to start with one of the teams on 13, and Chelsea, who went to Napoli
00:02:11with their goal difference of plus six, putting them in the final top eight spot at the start
00:02:16of play. The home side were in danger of going out completely. Steve Wilson is your commentator.
00:02:23Well, the margins tonight could hardly be tighter. Chelsea looking to avoid a play-off,
00:02:28Napoli hoping to secure one. So many Chelsea connections in Naples, not least Antonio Conte,
00:02:35but the only one of three former Chelsea players he can call on tonight is Romelu Lukaku. And that only
00:02:42is a substitute after seven months of injury. Liam Rossini's Chelsea side shows five changes to that
00:02:49which laboured past Paphos. Cole Palmer is on the bench. He hasn't played in this competition
00:02:54since match day one. Napoli haven't lost any of their last 25 home games. Going back to a defeat here
00:03:04against Lazio on the 8th of December of 2024. Is that a foul? It is.
00:03:15João Pedro was caught. And Alex Merritt is on his toes. It wasn't actually João Jesus who caught João Pedro,
00:03:22it was Antonio Begara. It's touched to Rhys James and hit the wall. Chelsea say it was handball.
00:03:31I think he's given it. Clearly, João Jesus has handled this and Chelsea have a penalty.
00:03:41Rhys James hits it.
00:03:43James James hits it. Tran Jesus clearly moves his arm towards the ball in mid-flight. They appeal for handball.
00:03:51Enzo Fernandes is going to take this. He's taken four and scored them all this season.
00:03:57This to strike first. And he does. That's a sensational penalty. It really is. Because Alex Merritt's guessed right.
00:04:08And anywhere but low and absolutely in the corner. I think the keeper would have saved that.
00:04:15Napoli 0, Chelsea 1.
00:04:19I hope you're really pleased. This is a tough assignment. Make no mistake. Napoli away.
00:04:26Rhys James and Pedro Neto has got it behind Olivera. And it needed Alex Merritt.
00:04:32And the overhead kick from João Pedro then evaded Pedro Neto, who got in behind Matthias Oliveira here.
00:04:40It's a great ball by Rhys James. Good pace by Pedro Neto. Matthias Oliveira, I think, was dawdling.
00:04:49Knocked into Rasmus Hoyland.
00:04:54A bit of Santos away.
00:04:58Matthias Oliveira winning that Vergara here. Vergara away from Caicedo.
00:05:03And what a great goal. Antonio Vergara somehow pirouetting, turning and finishing.
00:05:17It's his first ever goal for Napoli. And they desperately needed it.
00:05:24Well, there didn't seem to be any way through. But a bit of belief. A bit of persistence.
00:05:31And a bit of a pirouet. Suddenly got him through.
00:05:40McTominay. Vergara. Spinatola overlapping beautifully, actually.
00:05:46Wasn't the greatest ball in. Caicedo and Fofana had a moment when they definitely weren't on the same wavelength.
00:05:53Here's Labotka. Tranjesus. Elmas.
00:06:01Matthias Oliveira's run. Oh, brilliant.
00:06:06Rasmus Hoyland scores for Napoli.
00:06:10And Antonio Conte's side have picked this game up and turned it on its head.
00:06:17Two goals in ten minutes.
00:06:21Well, it's an outstanding goal.
00:06:24Great movement in the penalty area.
00:06:27Napoli two. Chelsea one.
00:06:37Esteval for Parma. Neatly into João Pedro. Bit of promise here.
00:06:42João Pedro! Great hit!
00:06:45And it's 2-2!
00:06:48It's an outstanding strike. We've seen some really good goals tonight.
00:06:54Esteval into Cole Parma. Onto João Pedro.
00:06:57Lovely little flick away from Di Lorenzo.
00:06:59And then hit it across João Jesus and beyond Alex Merritt.
00:07:07Be quite a feather in Liam Rossini's hat to beat Antonio Conte, to beat Napoli on home turf.
00:07:15Not many do that.
00:07:19Now, João Pedro. He's got Garnaccio to his left. He might not use him. He doesn't!
00:07:27He's got Garnaccio to his left. He's got Garnaccio to his left.
00:07:28Chelsea have the lead!
00:07:30João Pedro's double!
00:07:33Napoli two!
00:07:35Chelsea three!
00:07:37What a game of comebacks this is!
00:07:42Napoli turned it around from 1-0 down to lead 2-1.
00:07:46And Chelsea have turned it back and lead 3-2.
00:07:50He got himself away from Miguel GutiƩrrez and found the corner of the Napoli net.
00:08:03Miguel GutiƩrrez, decent ball that. Chaliba got something on it.
00:08:09Garnaccio has lost it to Vergara and here's an opportunity.
00:08:14Lukaku and Sanchez makes the save. What a story that nearly was.
00:08:24Big save that, but Chelsea would have to wait and see if their goal difference was good enough.
00:08:29So next we'll go to Paris. Paris Saint-Germain and Newcastle also both on 13 points.
00:08:35Victory would almost certainly seal a path straight through to the last 16.
00:08:39Defeat would almost certainly mean dropping into the playoffs.
00:08:42A draw and their fate would be out of their hands. Commentary on this one comes from Mark Scott.
00:08:49Eddie Howes called this the ultimate test in Europe.
00:08:53And while a trip to the Champions League holders would be tricky for anyone,
00:08:58Newcastle's ropey away form makes it even more of a challenge.
00:09:03Aside from a rare starting goal for Matt v Safonov, PSG are as expected.
00:09:09In contrast, the Newcastle line-up has caught many by surprise.
00:09:13Gordon and Barnes, who have 11 goals between them in the Champions League this season,
00:09:18both begin on the bench.
00:09:20Captain Bruno Guimaraes, meanwhile, isn't risked because of injury.
00:09:28Ludo Mendes, that's clever.
00:09:30They could be in trouble early on here, Newcastle.
00:09:33Dembele was waiting, Barkola interested.
00:09:35And now Slavko Vincic is being lobbied for an early penalty.
00:09:41Inside of a minute, the VAR does want to get involved here.
00:09:45Did it come off Barkola's arm first, though, before it went on to Miley's?
00:09:51Slavko Vincic hasn't needed long.
00:09:53One penalty.
00:09:55The worst possible start for Newcastle United.
00:10:02So Ousmane Dembele against Nick Pope to give Paris Saint-Germain an early lead.
00:10:10Dembele...
00:10:11Oh, wonderful from Pope!
00:10:15What a superb save from the Newcastle keeper to keep Dembele out.
00:10:22Don't think there's too much wrong with the penalty.
00:10:24It is just a top-draw save from Pope.
00:10:30Newcastle haven't had a kick as of yet.
00:10:34Kavarat-Skelia.
00:10:37Plenty of room to work with here.
00:10:40The Newcastle defence a bit unsure as to what to do.
00:10:43It opens up here and Pope isn't able to keep that one out.
00:10:48Paris in front.
00:10:51A superb strike yet again from Vitinha.
00:10:56It all started really with Newcastle being too passive here.
00:10:59Kavarat-Skelia able to advance.
00:11:01Look at the room for Vitinha.
00:11:03Such composure, such technique and such a swagger from the holders early on.
00:11:12It's been pretty relentless from Paris Saint-Germain.
00:11:17Dembele.
00:11:19And again, it's so easy.
00:11:22Pope with the save to prevent it getting embarrassing for Newcastle early on.
00:11:28And again, it's a good time.
00:11:29Lovely exchange there between Taya Emery and Dembele.
00:11:34Pope did well.
00:11:35How Newcastle could do with Bruno Kimarais in the middle tonight.
00:11:39Being overrun right now.
00:11:45Bruno Mendes looked like he was dragged back there.
00:11:47Play goes on.
00:11:50Oh, and over the top from Willian Tacho.
00:11:54It's a bit of a careless swipe over the top, really.
00:11:57And yet another Paris Saint-Germain chance comes and goes.
00:12:07Free kick for Newcastle and you would have thought they'd be happy to take as long as possible to
00:12:12ensure they go in just the one down.
00:12:20That's Marquinhos' header.
00:12:23Burn back in.
00:12:231-1!
00:12:25Wouldn't you just know it?
00:12:28Newcastle under the pump, but back on terms at PSG.
00:12:33Courtesy of Joe Willock.
00:12:36Paris Saint-Germain have had a sack full of chances,
00:12:39but right at the end of the half, a long ball in, nodded across by Byrne,
00:12:45and then headed home by Willock.
00:12:48PSG won, Newcastle won.
00:12:54Hope fans finding their voice again after being stunned into silence by that Willock goal.
00:13:04Walter Barter turning and laying off and Hall was nearly in.
00:13:08Now it's Tonali.
00:13:12Oh, Ramsey's delivery is spilled and from out of nothing,
00:13:17Newcastle nearly flashing a chance to incredibly take the lead.
00:13:23Had nowhere near the same kind of momentum that they built up in the first half, PSG.
00:13:30And credit to Newcastle for the half-time tweaks that they've made to change the flow of the game.
00:13:37It's a useful ball and Dembele has sent it wide, clearest chance that PSG have had since the break.
00:13:47They had to go through the knockout phase clubs last season, Luis Enrique's side.
00:13:52This might mean that they have to do so again.
00:13:56Newcastle have suffered from real travel sickness this season.
00:13:59It might not be a win, but if they hold on for a point here, it would be one of
00:14:04their best on the road this season.
00:14:05Gordon going for goal!
00:14:07Safonov behind it.
00:14:12Newcastle not just holding on for a point.
00:14:17The cross from Nuno Mendes is deflected and then cleared.
00:14:21Valtemada, Tonali looking to use the pace of Gordon here.
00:14:26Hakimi's also fast though.
00:14:29Gordon, Barnes is here.
00:14:32Valtemada's up there.
00:14:34Ramsey!
00:14:36PSG were really stretched there.
00:14:40Excellent Newcastle counter.
00:14:42Nearly finished off by Jacob Ramsey.
00:14:47It's going to be an in-stringer from Miley with 15 minutes to go.
00:14:53Safonov struggling!
00:14:55Tonali!
00:14:57A couple of bites of the cherry for Newcastle there.
00:15:02Tonali just couldn't get over the ball.
00:15:07Zaire Emery.
00:15:09Douai.
00:15:10He's had a go.
00:15:12Chao behind it.
00:15:17Dembele.
00:15:19Bettina!
00:15:21Patient stuff for PSG.
00:15:23And it finished with a first-time whip from Bettina.
00:15:28Both sides know that they need to push on to try and get a winner.
00:15:35Douai with the poor touch.
00:15:37And Newcastle now will look to break a pace.
00:15:42Gordon speeding away here.
00:15:44Whistler's in the middle.
00:15:45Big chances for Newcastle.
00:15:49Gordon Barnes!
00:15:51Safonov with a big save.
00:15:53Could have been a Newcastle winner.
00:15:56Which would have almost certainly taken them into the last 16.
00:16:02Gordon getting the wrong side of Marquinhos here.
00:16:06It's Anthony Gordon.
00:16:09Gordon deflected.
00:16:11Bounce!
00:16:28Good result for Newcastle, but still nothing confirmed for them or Paris Saint-Germain or remember Chelsea.
00:16:35However, Spurs knew that if they won at already eliminated Eidentracht Frankfurt, they would definitely finish in the top eight.
00:16:42Your commentator, Steve White.
00:16:46A night for Tottenham to disregard their scarcity of domestic wins and focus on a precious fifth in the Champions
00:16:53League.
00:16:54They'll hope Frankfurt's status as one of just four teams with nothing to play for makes them docile rather than
00:17:01dangerous.
00:17:02Frankfurt's six changes include a start for experienced Mario Goetze, but there's no Jan Uzan, a player linked with Premier
00:17:09League clubs, Spurs included.
00:17:12Five Tottenham changes including Randolf Kolomuani, who starts despite a minor car accident that delayed his journey.
00:17:19Dominic Solanke drops to an otherwise inexperienced bench.
00:17:25The 2-0 win over Borussia Dortmund last week.
00:17:28Extended Tottenham's unbeaten run against German sides to six games.
00:17:33Unbeaten isn't the objective though tonight.
00:17:37Udogi.
00:17:44Positive start this from Tottenham, who are in early and have scored early.
00:17:50How welcome is that?
00:17:53Or how welcome would it have been?
00:17:57Xavi Simons finally looks over to discover the bad news.
00:18:03The whistle blew immediately for an offside there, but should it have been the case?
00:18:13But Udogi may have been impeding Amenda from an offside position.
00:18:19The on-field decision stands.
00:18:23Well, that will be controversial if Tottenham don't find a way to score a legitimate goal tonight.
00:18:33It's Ropoulini.
00:18:35It's Ropoulini.
00:18:39Odeber.
00:18:40Oh, so close to an outstanding goal.
00:18:45Well, this would have been glorious.
00:18:48Worked to sight of the target quite splendidly.
00:18:51Did Tottenham for Wilson Odeber, who must have thought that was creeping inside the post.
00:18:58It's Ropoulini.
00:19:25It's Ropoulini.
00:19:27Brown.
00:19:27Larsson is in.
00:19:30And has clipped the top of the crossbar.
00:19:33Well, the Frankfurt goal would have been very unwelcome from a Tottenham point of view.
00:19:39Oh, the bear.
00:19:43Udogi.
00:19:46Simmons delivers.
00:19:47Romero.
00:19:48Yes, for Tottenham.
00:19:51Right at the start of the second half.
00:19:53The goal they have been striving for.
00:19:58Finally something to celebrate on a night when they had to have something to celebrate.
00:20:04And against his former club, Randol Kolomwani is taking the acclaim.
00:20:09Frankfurt 0, Tottenham 1.
00:20:13Tieta.
00:20:15Tottenham have organised themselves.
00:20:20Showing good results.
00:20:22Geary, what a ball that is.
00:20:25And Aurelia Buta has just fluffed.
00:20:28A glorious chance to make it 1-1.
00:20:33The Spurs play three of the Premier League's top four over the course of the next month.
00:20:39Avoiding the need to play two extra games in the Champions League in that period would be very welcome indeed.
00:20:47Reach Siemens, but it's been helped on towards Solanke, who's in to settle the matter.
00:20:53The player who won the Europa League quarter-final for Tottenham here in April of last year might just have
00:21:02struck the critical goal for them to secure a top eight finish in the Champions League a season on.
00:21:09Premier League woes can be cast aside for the evening because Tottenham are on their way to yet another win
00:21:16in the Champions League, their fourth in the last five games.
00:21:23You know, it's a massive relief and something that we're really proud of to finish top four in the, you
00:21:27know, in the Champions League with the best teams in the world.
00:21:29It's, you know, it's where we want to be and like I said, it's a massive relief because in football
00:21:33there's just so many games nowadays and, you know, to have two less games in a season can be massive.
00:21:37And especially with the tough fixtures that we've got coming up, it's nice to, you know, be able to prepare
00:21:41a little bit more for those games, so, yeah.
00:21:44So Spurs through. Now back to one of the other teams starting on 13 points, Manchester City, who are looking
00:21:51to win and win big against Galatasaray.
00:21:54The Turkish champions were playing to stay in the top 24. Guy Mowbrie was at the Etihad.
00:22:02Erling Haaland returns to Pep Guardiola's starting line-up and City really could do with him ending a run of
00:22:08five games without a goal.
00:22:10Rodri suspended whilst neither Mark Gehi or Antoine Semenyo are eligible to play.
00:22:16Ilkay Gundogan is the captain of Galatasaray. On his return to the club he served for eight seasons and led
00:22:22to the travel in 2023.
00:22:23The main danger, though, is surely Victor Ossiman, who reached 50 goals from just 59 Galatasaray games at the weekend.
00:22:31A new club record.
00:22:35All that matters first is that Manchester City take care of what happens here.
00:22:40And that might not be straightforward. Galatasaray have made a habit over the years of tripping up opponents from England
00:22:47who haven't taken care.
00:22:50Ait Noury down the left-hand side. Still finding his feet as a Manchester City player.
00:22:56Great ball for Haaland! And he's missed it!
00:23:00Ait Noury could not have put that in a better position for Manchester City's number nine.
00:23:07Just how he likes them usually.
00:23:11But that's the way he's been going for him lately.
00:23:18Docky.
00:23:20A little shimmy past Gundogan.
00:23:23And Haaland is in!
00:23:24Haaland's chip! City lead!
00:23:27He doesn't miss twice.
00:23:31Wonderfully timed.
00:23:33Brilliantly found.
00:23:35Superbly dispatched.
00:23:37And he keeps up his record
00:23:39of a goal a game average in the Champions League.
00:23:43What a good pass it is from Docky.
00:23:46Haaland is, as far as Abdul Karim,
00:23:48but actually is concerned on the wrong side.
00:23:51And once he was in front,
00:23:53well, we knew what was happening next.
00:23:56Manchester City won.
00:23:58Galatasaray nil.
00:24:02Here's Nico O'Reilly!
00:24:05Goodness, that had some force behind it.
00:24:08It's a good save by Urchand Shakir,
00:24:10because that was travelling.
00:24:19Docky.
00:24:21Faced by Sanchez.
00:24:23Plays it back,
00:24:24and it's finished by Scherke.
00:24:30City have a two-goal lead.
00:24:33Donnarumma has some instructions
00:24:34to take on from his boss.
00:24:36Galatasaray have problems to solve.
00:24:40Ryan Scherke's third Champions League goal.
00:24:43Docky played the pass
00:24:45at just the right time.
00:24:46Into just the right place
00:24:47to just the right person.
00:24:50Nicely curled into the corner.
00:24:53Haaland and Cherky.
00:24:55City 2, Galatasaray nil.
00:25:01Steps on the gas.
00:25:02And gets past Scherke.
00:25:05In towards Foden!
00:25:09Mamouf behind him.
00:25:11Haaland square of him.
00:25:13Foden's finish was found wanting.
00:25:18SanƩ.
00:25:20Runs into Bernardo Silva,
00:25:22but runs through him.
00:25:23Gundogan.
00:25:25Here's Jacobs.
00:25:27Plenty of red and amber shirts forward now.
00:25:31Gabriel Sara.
00:25:32Bounced back to him by Yilmaz.
00:25:34And then bounced behind
00:25:35by Kusanov for a corner.
00:25:42Gabriel Sara.
00:25:43Headed by Ossiman.
00:25:45It's on target.
00:25:46But it is straight at Donnarumma.
00:25:48Broke free of Bernardo Silva
00:25:50and Omar Mamouf.
00:25:51And he couldn't get the power.
00:25:53Take it!
00:25:54Take it!
00:25:57Harland gets it back from Sanchez.
00:26:01And storms down the middle.
00:26:03Now he finds Mamouf!
00:26:05Spilled by goalkeeper Shakir,
00:26:08but he recovers.
00:26:09And again, we point out to the fact that goal difference could be the deciding factor
00:26:14for a top-eight finish or not.
00:26:16He knows it.
00:26:17That's probably why he's even more animated than usual.
00:26:21Here's Schallai.
00:26:22Getting as far forward as he's been all night.
00:26:24Great save, Donnarumma.
00:26:26To keep out Ossiman.
00:26:31Donnarumma down really smartly.
00:26:35Foden.
00:26:38Cherky.
00:26:39Swept his way by Ryan Aitnuri.
00:26:44Aitnuri, Cherky.
00:26:45They combine again.
00:26:47Here's Aitnuri.
00:26:49Blocked by Chakir.
00:26:52Ryan Aitnuri.
00:26:54You can see his eyes light up,
00:26:56even staring through the back of his head as it comes off.
00:26:59Bardakshi had a really good, quick reaction from Urjan Chakir.
00:27:03Keeps it at two.
00:27:08And there's Aitnuri and now it's Foden and Haaland's free.
00:27:12Foden couldn't pick him out.
00:27:15So many chances.
00:27:17If it does come down to goal difference,
00:27:19then City will be left thinking about
00:27:21the number of opportunities they've passed up this evening.
00:27:26Right, so now we have City, Chelsea, Newcastle and PSG
00:27:31all waiting to find out their fate.
00:27:33Real Madrid, though,
00:27:35knew a win would guarantee their top eight place,
00:27:38but draw or lose and it will be out of their hands.
00:27:41Benfica had to win and improve their goal difference
00:27:44to sneak into the playoffs.
00:27:46Rob Palmer watched this one.
00:27:50Pavlidis.
00:27:52Prestiani is his wingman.
00:27:54Valverde only half stops him.
00:27:56Now it comes to Prestiani.
00:27:57Has lots of space!
00:27:59Oh!
00:27:59Fine fingertips from Thibaut Courtois.
00:28:06He's loving this, Mourinho.
00:28:12The ball in.
00:28:13Free header.
00:28:14And he doesn't miss from there.
00:28:16The deadly Kylian Mbappe.
00:28:20The first sighting of the great man tonight.
00:28:23And that was a routine header.
00:28:25His 12th Champions League goal of the season.
00:28:32Prestiani, who has been the crowd pleaser.
00:28:36Pavlidis.
00:28:37Defender has lost his footing.
00:28:38Can he make the correct timing?
00:28:39He can!
00:28:40They're back in it!
00:28:42Shelled it up.
00:28:44Punishes Real Madrid.
00:28:46Well, you know that no.
00:28:47Jose Mourinho team is going to give up the chase lightly.
00:28:53It's well away from Courtois.
00:28:55Penalty!
00:28:56The referee had an eagle eye on that situation.
00:29:01He knew that Onamendi and Chiwomeni were having a tussle.
00:29:07Ascensio loses his call.
00:29:12Short run up.
00:29:13Powerfully home.
00:29:15Benfica had the lead.
00:29:18Jose Mourinho maybe coming back to haunt Real Madrid.
00:29:25Pavlidis.
00:29:28Real Madrid rocking back.
00:29:31Oh, Courtois losing at his near post.
00:29:33And he's done it again.
00:29:35Sheldon up second.
00:29:37Oh, Benfica.
00:29:40Going to create one of the great upsets on the final night.
00:29:47Goulaire cuts it back.
00:29:48And Bappe!
00:29:50His second on this helter-skelter night.
00:30:00Prestiani.
00:30:02Right across the fence.
00:30:03They've got Courtois to the rescue yet again for Real Madrid.
00:30:07It doesn't matter how you keep them out, it doesn't matter how you keep them out, as long as you
00:30:09keep them out.
00:30:13Oh, and that was a late and crazy challenge from Ascensio.
00:30:18Please leave the field by the nearest available exit.
00:30:28And that's what we keep the goalkeeping.
00:30:39And that's what we keep them out.
00:30:42And that's what we keep them out.
00:30:50to words to crazy for Real Madrid Rodrigo is the second player dismissed
00:30:59where do you start with this game where will this game end Benfica have a a two
00:31:07man advantage now the onus is on them if they can get a goal they head into the
00:31:16top 24 and their season in Europe will be extended Jose Mourinho tells them to
00:31:22just go for it might as well send his goalkeeper up there they've got two
00:31:25extra players
00:31:30Ornus hangs it up there the goalkeeper's there oh my goodness gracious me this is
00:31:36unbelievable a diving header from Trubin
00:31:41Jose Mourinho is back to haunt his former club
00:31:45he's achieved some incredible things in his career but even he hasn't seen anything like this
00:31:58Wow Wow Benfica remarkably get into the playoffs Real Madrid left hanging on 15 points and there
00:32:06could be more Portuguese joy with Sporting they had an impressive win against defending champions PSG
00:32:12last week so had a chance to make the top eight if they won in Bilbao against Athletic Club
00:32:20Well it's come to the crunch the final day of the league phase a busy night permutations are plenty
00:32:26athletic with some typical intricate play and a wonderful start sunset
00:32:32just over two minutes gone and you could not wish for a more ideal start than that
00:32:42Oh what an answer that is a quite fabulous header from Usman Diamande absolutely brilliant from Diamande
00:32:55Tos Rice in trouble
00:32:56oh
00:32:59he'll have another chance which he takes
00:33:02the man with the Midas touch in the Champions League has got another crucial goal for Athletic Club
00:33:08it's just he's so unfortunate with that first one but that's classy isn't it
00:33:16Trincao beautiful work Trincao again that is a magnificent goal sporting show their quality
00:33:25oh this is such a good team goal he's onside it's a lovely little ball through had to be him
00:33:31that was involved
00:33:33the pressure taken right off by Rui Silva and maybe right on if they can get this right
00:33:39it's a real opportunity for Luis Suarez perhaps to win it
00:33:44there's touch let him down in there and Athletic Club escape thanks to their goalkeeper but not now
00:33:49Alisson Santos with a goal that means so much to sporting
00:33:55well it's just such a quick break isn't it you think Suarez is going to score he stumbles whether he
00:34:00slightly slips
00:34:01the balls just behind him but when it falls here what a lovely finish that is
00:34:07the final score Athletic Club 2 Sporting Club de Portugal 3
00:34:13great win for sporting and we're getting closer to clarifying the top eight with Chelsea Newcastle Paris Saint-Germain Manchester
00:34:21City and Real Madrid still all hanging but we aren't there
00:34:25yet so we can't risk any of these three speaking until we do you having fun
00:34:30just can't say anything right simple for Liverpool beat Carabag and they'd be in the top eight Steve Bauer was
00:34:37at Anfield
00:34:40with three centre-backs all unavailable to him on a slot opts for Ryan Gravenberg to fill in alongside Virgil
00:34:47van Dijk as Viet, Salah, Gakpo and Akatike all start for Liverpool who've won 17 of their last 20 champions
00:34:55league group stage matches Carabag who make only their second ever visit to England made 11 changes
00:35:01last weekend so all their first choice players return tonight including Colombian striker Camilo Duran who has four goals already
00:35:10in the competition
00:35:12the first ever meeting between these two teams
00:35:18along from the central defender Medina to the captain Subir the Frenchman
00:35:24Oh no

00:35:36and that is another one
00:35:38on the injury list for Arna Slott and Liverpool
00:35:50Brazilian Silva thought that was a goal kick it's a Liverpool corner
00:35:58signal from Savaslai who delivers Akatike applying the play
00:36:01Van Dijk
00:36:03did that cross the line
00:36:04it did
00:36:09Alexis McAllister
00:36:11to give Liverpool the lead after a quarter of an hour
00:36:20the knee
00:36:21he's getting kicked
00:36:21he's getting kicked

00:36:302-0 Liverpool
00:36:312 in less than 5 and a half minutes
00:36:35Florian Viet's fifth for the club
00:36:39after some very impressive work from Hugo Ecotique.
00:36:46Salah has it back.
00:36:49And the return pass from Vietz.
00:36:53Yes, Salah caught there. He was.
00:36:57Yes, the back-in referee took his time.
00:37:01Yeah, just clipped there with Baccarlo outside the penalty area.
00:37:05It's touched to Salah!
00:37:10And it is very much worth the wait.
00:37:14It's a 49th career Champions League goal for Mo Salah.
00:37:24That's for Ecotique to get on the end of.
00:37:28Is this his moment? Oh, it is!
00:37:32He's not razor-sharp all evening.
00:37:35He's not hungry to score all evening.
00:37:39And he has Liverpool's fourth.
00:37:43And the top scorer is up to 13 for the season.
00:37:49And this is turning into a confidence-boosting routine evening.
00:37:55This could be a long half an hour for Karabakh.
00:37:58Vietz.
00:38:03McAllister lets it go.
00:38:05He'll get a go for his second.
00:38:08And Liverpool's fifth.
00:38:11And they are flying their way to a top-four finish.
00:38:18Two for McAllister.
00:38:20Five for Liverpool.
00:38:22And we've only just played past the hour mark.
00:38:30The only in to Salah.
00:38:31Van Dijk's carried on his run here.
00:38:34And he's found Chiesa!
00:38:39Van Dijk with the assist.
00:38:41Chiesa with the goal.
00:38:446-0 Liverpool.
00:38:47Top-four finish secured.
00:38:50In comfortable clinical fashion from the six-time winners of this competition.
00:38:57To be honest, we know that maybe in Champions League we've been a little bit better than in the Premier
00:39:02League.
00:39:03It's always important to score early.
00:39:05Especially if you score.
00:39:06So that helps.
00:39:08But I think the team did a good job.
00:39:10So now it's time to recover and go for the next one.
00:39:14We're happy that we are going straight away to the last 16.
00:39:18Especially because it's only two years ago that we were playing Europa League.
00:39:23And we went out in the quarter-finals against Atalanta.
00:39:25So two seasons in a row now.
00:39:27Being at the last 16.
00:39:29And this season, as we were last season, we were very hungry for more.
00:39:33We will definitely be hungry for more this season as well.
00:39:37So Liverpool and Spurs definitely in the top eight alongside Arsenal and Bayern.
00:39:43And Barcelona face Copenhagen at Camp Nou.
00:39:46Knowing victory will give them a great chance of joining that group.
00:39:50This one watched by Simon Brotherton.
00:39:54It's a tight race for a top eight finish in the Champions League.
00:39:57And Barcelona are right in the thick of it.
00:40:01Ball gets away from Eric Garcia.
00:40:04Forward off Elianusi's boot.
00:40:06Here's an early chance.
00:40:07And it's a stunning start.
00:40:09Victor Dannesson, the 17-year-old,
00:40:12gives Copenhagen the lead in Barcelona inside four minutes.
00:40:18There was only ever one place that ball was going to end up.
00:40:22Wow. Early drama on this final day of the league phase of the Champions League.
00:40:32Inch perfect.
00:40:33What a pass that is.
00:40:35What an opportunity for 1-1.
00:40:37And it's been taken.
00:40:38It didn't take Barcelona long.
00:40:40The pass from Dani Olmo was inch perfect.
00:40:45Lamine Yamal into Robert Lewandowski.
00:40:48It's goal number 107 in the Champions League for him.
00:40:55Tidy interchange.
00:40:56Balde finds Lopez who picks out Yamal.
00:41:00KoundƩ on the overlap.
00:41:01Might not need him.
00:41:02Takes a deflection.
00:41:032-1 Barcelona.
00:41:05Lamine Yamal.
00:41:07The pass from Firmin Lopez.
00:41:10Lamine Yamal striking the shot.
00:41:12Took a little deflection which looped it up into the air.
00:41:17And into the far corner of the net.
00:41:20Here's Yamal.
00:41:22Into Lewandowski.
00:41:25Did he miss Q?
00:41:26Was he fouled?
00:41:28It's a penalty.
00:41:3113 goals in 14 matches in the Champions League.
00:41:34Last season there's his first of the current campaign.
00:41:39And Barcelona's captain slams it home for 3-1.
00:41:43And FC Copenhagen's European season is going to end right here.
00:41:49Marc Casado into Marcus Rashford.
00:41:53Who felt that challenge from Bergamele.
00:41:56Here's the challenge once more.
00:42:05Rashford's kick.
00:42:06Finds the back of the net.
00:42:08It's another Champions League goal for Marcus Rashford.
00:42:14Rashford finding that little gap at the near post.
00:42:17Getting it past the despairing dive of Dominic Kotarski.
00:42:22And Barcelona have run away with it in the second half.
00:42:29Well, we are there now.
00:42:31What an astonishing, astonishing evening.
00:42:34Chelsea definitely threw automatically in the top eight.
00:42:38And a blow for Napoli who are out of the competition completely.
00:42:43Antonio Conte's side not in the top 24.
00:42:48Manchester City's win at the Etihad.
00:42:51Just the two goals was enough for them to make the top eight as well.
00:42:56And joining them, Pep Guardiola's former side, Barcelona.
00:43:01That comeback winner over FC Copenhagen.
00:43:04Enough for them to be in the top eight.
00:43:06And completing the top eight with that dramatic last gas win are Sporting.
00:43:13They won't have to go through the playoffs.
00:43:16They're straight into the last 16.
00:43:18So that does mean that despite Newcastle getting that very creditable point away to the European champions,
00:43:26they will have to go into the playoffs, as will Paris Saint-Germain themselves.
00:43:32That was the route they did last year, of course, on the way to winning it.
00:43:37And Benfica, Benfica sneak into the playoffs.
00:43:40And by doing so, knock Real Madrid into the playoffs as well.
00:43:44Real Madrid drop out of the top eight and they will have to go into the playoffs.
00:43:50Let's just hear from some of the people involved tonight.
00:43:55We are top eight, we have, you know, have a long week, don't play, you know, competition.
00:44:00We were having the last 16 and we see which opponent, the second leg at home.
00:44:03So really pleased for that.
00:44:06I give the credit to the players.
00:44:08I said when I came in, they lost a manager that they really respected for reasons that are beyond my
00:44:15control or knowledge.
00:44:17So when you go through that as a young group, to come back and then to accept a new manager
00:44:21the way they have done,
00:44:22for them to work as hard as they have done for me is a credit to them.
00:44:26And hopefully we can have more and more really good nights like this.
00:44:28The first 15, 20 minutes, we struggled to handle them.
00:44:31But after that, I thought we grew into the game and I thought it was a very sort of mature
00:44:35performance from us.
00:44:36I think we've learnt a lot from the last Champions League campaign we had.
00:44:39And to be honest, I thought we had the better chances second half and probably could have won it.
00:44:42The first time that our club's been to the knockout stages of the Champions League and something we're very, very
00:44:47proud of.
00:44:48And yeah, sort of more games to add to the schedule, but we're sort of very up for the challenge.
00:44:53What can you do? What can we do from now? Moan and complain or we found ourselves in this position
00:44:58now outside the top eight
00:44:59and we have to approach it with the same mentality as if we were playing the quarter-final.
00:45:04It doesn't matter to us now, we have to carry on.
00:45:06I did it and I don't know what to say actually. I'm not Pavlidis used to score, so for me
00:45:14it was something completely new.
00:45:16I don't know, I'm 24 years old and for me it's the first time, so I don't know, unbelievable.
00:45:23So there you have it. We'll focus on things at the other end of the table later on, but we'll
00:45:27just show you how the top 12 looks there.
00:45:30Look, obviously there are some teams there we haven't shown you their goals yet for Arsenal, for example, who have
00:45:35won tonight.
00:45:36And we'll show you those goals very shortly.
00:45:37But we thought it was important to show you the top 12 so that you could see, clarify the top
00:45:43eight.
00:45:43But also, Real Madrid and Inter Milan and Paris Saint-Germain and Newcastle.
00:45:48How close they were to the top eight, but they go into the playoffs.
00:45:53And the draw for the two-legged playoffs is on Friday.
00:45:58Right then, I hope you three are ready to deliver now.
00:46:01I'll just have a sleep.
00:46:04There are lots of really good stories involving the English clubs, but we have to start with that.
00:46:10I mean, sometimes what you don't need when trying to get all 18 games into a show and work out
00:46:16a running order is a goalkeeper scoring an injury time,
00:46:20well, not a winner, but an injury time fourth goal that takes Benfica through to the playoffs.
00:46:24Yeah, it was absolutely brilliant.
00:46:26I mean, we were all up celebrating watching it.
00:46:28We were just really in shock, to be honest with you.
00:46:31But Real Madrid will feel a little bit aggrieved.
00:46:34It's Orens here who gets upended by Bellingham, or you think he does.
00:46:38But when you see the replay here, Bellingham actually pinches the ball and there's no foul.
00:46:43But Mourinho, he says to his goalkeeper, Trubin, you go.
00:46:46We'll let two players stay back.
00:46:49The ball in from Orens is absolutely unbelievable.
00:46:51But the header, my words, it's absolutely brilliant.
00:46:56I mean, this is phenomenal and you see the celebrations from everywhere.
00:47:01But that is, it's such a good header to get up beyond.
00:47:05He actually gets above his own man and says, like, I'm winning this header.
00:47:09I mean, that picture, that is incredible.
00:47:10I mean, it's not a flick, is it?
00:47:13No.
00:47:13It doesn't just hit him and bobble in.
00:47:15It is a proper, towering header.
00:47:18I wish I had that.
00:47:19I didn't have that.
00:47:20Considering the type of the ball that went into the box, it's an incredible header.
00:47:24And just the nature of that moment.
00:47:27I think basically every other game had been finished.
00:47:29And so you had to do something in this game.
00:47:31Trubin, of course it was Trubin.
00:47:33Mourinho thought it up, didn't he?
00:47:34No, but that actually is.
00:47:35I mean, that's a big moment for Mourinho.
00:47:37Massive.
00:47:38Since going back to Benfica.
00:47:39Yeah, because everything hasn't really worked out for him since he took over Bruno Large
00:47:43back in September.
00:47:44They didn't win any of his first two games in the Champions League.
00:47:47No wins in four.
00:47:48And then, to win it that way, against Real Madrid, the narrative was there.
00:47:52Against his former club, Arbeloa, who he's very much the mentor of.
00:47:56He considered him as his son on the other bench.
00:47:58And you see here the results pretty incredible.
00:48:02What a terrible start.
00:48:03Yeah, he lost against Chelsea.
00:48:04So, he took over after the Carabac defeat.
00:48:06Yeah.
00:48:06So, Chelsea, Newcastle, even the Bayer Leverkusen at home was a really bad one.
00:48:09And we thought that's it.
00:48:10They're done.
00:48:11Losing to Juventus was bad enough.
00:48:12But there still was a bit of life in them.
00:48:14And we saw that today in that miracle.
00:48:16And we will...
00:48:19Obviously, Nox Real Madrid into the playoffs, which we may have time to talk about a little
00:48:22bit later on.
00:48:24And the Portuguese joy continued because Sporting scored with virtually the last kick of their
00:48:30game.
00:48:30Yeah.
00:48:30These Portuguese sides have been getting ready for these late goals.
00:48:32Haven't they decided where they're going to finish?
00:48:34And it was an absolutely brilliant moment for them as well.
00:48:36To score so late.
00:48:38And think you're defending a corner.
00:48:39But the fact is they knew they needed to get a goal.
00:48:41So, here's the energy.
00:48:42Look at the sprinting from Suarez here.
00:48:43You know, this is the 94th minute of the game.
00:48:46And you're thinking, okay, can he finish?
00:48:47Can he finish?
00:48:48This is your big moment.
00:48:49That's what you've been waiting for.
00:48:50Well, you kind of stumbled.
00:48:51It wasn't necessarily the best thing you've ever seen.
00:48:53But you follow it up.
00:48:54You commit all those bodies forward and bang.
00:48:56There's your reward.
00:48:57Away from home scoring a goal like that.
00:48:59All the benches run out onto the field.
00:49:01And these things just remind you how exciting football can be.
00:49:04You want to give the sporting goalkeeper some credit there as well.
00:49:06Because it was a perfectly thrown ball, wasn't it?
00:49:08No, you don't have to give goalkeepers credit.
00:49:09Well, a number of times you see throw outs and it bobbles out or it does it.
00:49:14But that was perfect.
00:49:15Oh, it's brilliant.
00:49:15I mean, to have that vision and to have the execution and to pull it off.
00:49:19But then it's about the bodies going forward as well.
00:49:21And making sure, like Nerem says there at the end, that you finish it.
00:49:24It's a great finish as well.
00:49:25Because he actually stumbles himself there, Santos, as he goes to control the ball.
00:49:30Sort of sets himself and brilliant.
00:49:33It's quite good.
00:49:34I don't want to go down the route at the moment of how many English teams are in the top
00:49:37eight.
00:49:38But it's quite good for the competition that a team like Sporting are in the top eight, isn't it?
00:49:42Yeah, we were always looking at the start of the season.
00:49:44Who could be the support package?
00:49:45Who could be the underdogs doing well?
00:49:47And I don't think any of us had them.
00:49:50But they've done really well since Ruben Amorim left the club last year,
00:49:52especially under this manager.
00:49:54They've signed good players.
00:49:55They beat PSG last week, plus this win there.
00:49:57Those six points make the difference.
00:49:59Let's get on to the English teams then.
00:50:01You were paying particular attention to Napoli against Chelsea.
00:50:05They rode their luck a little bit at times.
00:50:08Yes.
00:50:09But João Pedro had not carried them through, but was instrumental.
00:50:12Yeah, he had two very, very big moments.
00:50:13And I think it's no surprise that those moments came alongside Cole Palmer there as well.
00:50:17And I think the way that Cole Palmer himself linked up in the second half was very good.
00:50:20Palmer coming on at half-time did make a difference.
00:50:22Like, let's be honest, the pass from Palmer isn't the best in the world there.
00:50:25But for João Pedro himself, his sort of unpredictability, but then the quality in the finish,
00:50:30that's on his weaker foot.
00:50:31That's as good a strike as you'll see anywhere.
00:50:33But he always fancies his chances with that.
00:50:35And with this here, it's a nice set and goal.
00:50:37It's a great way to pass for João Pedro.
00:50:55But to go to Napoli and get a result, needing a result, is huge for him and his confidence.
00:51:01And probably the subs that he made as well were vitally important throughout the game.
00:51:05And he's had this sort of strange start to his Chelsea career in the sense of what he's achieved,
00:51:11but just how varied his start has been in all the different competitions.
00:51:16But he would have probably taken that at the start.
00:51:18Yeah, I agree.
00:51:19The only game, really, where they struggled against Arsenal at home,
00:51:22where they could have considered five against Brentford.
00:51:24But they're not out of it.
00:51:25No, not out of it.
00:51:26Before the second leg at the Emirates, Brentford, they were probably not the better team,
00:51:30but they rode their luck and they won.
00:51:32But he's rotating a lot, he's building something.
00:51:35I think he needs a bit more time.
00:51:36But to start with four games in four different competitions like he did,
00:51:40I don't think it's easy as well.
00:51:41But he has to rotate, doesn't he, at the moment?
00:51:44Partly because of the number of different competitions they're in,
00:51:46and partly as he tries to get an understanding of some of the players that he's got.
00:51:50Well, what I would say is he doesn't necessarily have to.
00:51:52I think we've seen some managers who come in and decide,
00:51:54these are a bunch of players that I trust.
00:51:56But it is good that he is doing that.
00:51:58I think for some of those players now, they'll probably think every time they play,
00:52:00it's almost an audition.
00:52:01And with those results in mind, you know, it seems like it's a strong start as well.
00:52:05Speaking of strong performances, Spurs, a way to...
00:52:10Never in doubt.
00:52:11Never in doubt.
00:52:12Trust in Spurs.
00:52:14They have done very well in this competition.
00:52:16They've done brilliant.
00:52:17I think there'll have been a little bit of a feeling of,
00:52:19we've been here before in terms of going to Frankfurt and getting a result.
00:52:23So there'd have been a lot of confidence within that.
00:52:25But we spoke about it on the show last week when Rory Smith was on and we were saying that
00:52:29it suits the English teams
00:52:31because all the teams want to have a go in the Champions League competition.
00:52:34So in the Premier League, Spurs struggle to beat teams that sit back.
00:52:38Frankfurt, as bad as they are, they still have a go and they want to commit players forward.
00:52:43So the way that Tottenham have been playing primarily of sitting, defending and waiting to hit on the counterattack...
00:52:50Yeah, but also teams within the Premier League as well are sitting back and they find it difficult to break
00:52:55them down.
00:52:56So they actually struggle in both sides of the game.
00:52:59But when it opens up, that actually suits them.
00:53:02So what did you see today then in how they played and what they did?
00:53:05Well, the clinical.
00:53:06And that was the most important thing.
00:53:08When you're looking to score goals away from home, you've got to be clinical.
00:53:11And Colin Mawani here does extremely well because what you do need is you need your striker in the middle
00:53:17of the penalty area to get you goals.
00:53:19And credit to Romero, he is a threat from set pieces.
00:53:23That back post header, it's such a sensible header, smart header.
00:53:26Not trying to score the goal himself, but he's just trying to put it back in and hoping that's where
00:53:31his striker is.
00:53:32It's a scruffy finish, but it doesn't matter.
00:53:34That's the type of finish that you want.
00:53:35And then they get Dominic Solanke on.
00:53:37This is a really poor header.
00:53:39But Solanke shows that turn of pace against Robin Cock.
00:53:42Gets him behind.
00:53:43It's a brilliant finish.
00:53:45No thought process.
00:53:46Just wants to put his laces through it.
00:53:48Wants to go across the goalkeeper.
00:53:50And I think he's the type of player that Thomas Frank needs in his team.
00:53:54Needs him fit on a more consistent basis.
00:53:57And I think the results will pick up with Dominic Solanke in the team.
00:54:00Do you think, I mean, their performances in the Champions League and the teams that they have played and Paris
00:54:08Saint-Germain and Borussia Dortmund may be the two hardest.
00:54:11They were brilliant in that Paris Saint-Germain game.
00:54:13They were.
00:54:13They were absolutely superb in that game as well.
00:54:16Which is odd to highlight because they've only conceded in two games.
00:54:20And they've conceded five of them in that.
00:54:22But it is odd because they gave as good as they got in that game.
00:54:25Yeah, absolutely.
00:54:26And, I mean, we knew at the start after the draw that they had a good schedule and good fixtures
00:54:30to be fair.
00:54:31But still, to beat Dortmund like they did, OK, 11 against 10 men last week was a big win for
00:54:36him, especially under the pressure that he was.
00:54:38Let's not forget, they went through this fixture list under massive pressure for Thomas Frank that was, at times, very
00:54:44uncertain about his own future.
00:54:45So, to have managed that really well and finished top eight is a great achievement.
00:54:49So, they're through.
00:54:50Newcastle drop into the players.
00:54:52They fall out to the top eight, as do Paris Saint-Germain.
00:54:55And he changed things up a bit, didn't he, Eddie Howe?
00:54:57He changed his formation.
00:54:59And yet, after a sticky first half, they had chances to win it.
00:55:03Yeah, they really did.
00:55:04He went to a 3-4-3.
00:55:06And they struggled, I'd say, for the first 15-20 minutes to adapt to the system.
00:55:10But leaving Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes on the bench, it almost felt like he was going to contain for
00:55:16as long as he could.
00:55:17And then he was going to get these two guys on.
00:55:19And when they came on, that pacing behind, he stretched the game.
00:55:23This was an absolutely brilliant run from Anthony Gordon.
00:55:25But watch this from Harvey Barnes.
00:55:27The overlapping run just catches Paris Saint-Germain out.
00:55:30Lovely flick.
00:55:31It's a really clever strike from Harvey Barnes.
00:55:33He's just unfortunate that he can't cut across it quite enough to get it in that far corner.
00:55:39But then, this is the moment that he'll be thinking about all night, Harvey Barnes.
00:55:43He'll probably be thinking about it for weeks.
00:55:45As it comes to him here, Julian's saying that there's a lot of spin on the ball.
00:55:51There is! Look at the ball!
00:55:52Yeah, and listen, there's spin on the ball.
00:55:54But Harvey Barnes is a quality player.
00:55:55He's good enough.
00:55:56And he just loses his balance.
00:55:58He doesn't read it quick enough.
00:56:00That's a brilliant opportunity.
00:56:01And Newcastle could have pinched it.
00:56:03I say pinched it.
00:56:04Second half performance.
00:56:05Absolutely superb.
00:56:07But they were grateful for a penalty save in the first half from this.
00:56:11Yeah, they were.
00:56:12I mean, this was like, what, first couple of minutes, first minute of the game.
00:56:17Miley gets caught out here with Barcola in behind.
00:56:21And then it just ricochets.
00:56:22I think this is very, very unfortunate.
00:56:24The fact that it hits Barcola, then Miley hits it.
00:56:27I think it's just a natural, he's out of control the way he's running.
00:56:31And that's so unlucky.
00:56:33But sometimes you need your goalkeeper to help you out, get you out of jail a little bit.
00:56:37This is a brilliant save from Nick Pope.
00:56:39Full stretch.
00:56:41Superb.
00:56:41But then it gives a little bit of belief into the Newcastle team.
00:56:44Do you think because he sort of swiped it,
00:56:47that makes it look as though it didn't just hit him?
00:56:50Mmm.
00:56:52Honestly, I don't think he's intended to do it.
00:56:54But the fact is, from when it hits him literally in the palm of his hand,
00:56:57you're going to think to yourself it's a penalty.
00:56:59Yeah, that look that you gave me then was very much different.
00:57:01No, I don't think that, Mark.
00:57:03I completely and utterly disagree with you.
00:57:05Paris Saint-Germain have found themselves in this same position
00:57:08that they did last year.
00:57:09He worked last year, so...
00:57:11LAUGHTER
00:57:12Right, I got it.
00:57:14Incredible.
00:57:15They'll be kicking themselves there.
00:57:17Two points in the last three games.
00:57:18This is it.
00:57:19A draw at Bilbao, 0-0.
00:57:20The defeat against Sporting last weekend.
00:57:23Last week, sorry.
00:57:23And then this draw again.
00:57:24It's just not good enough.
00:57:26They had chances, they didn't take them.
00:57:27And after that it was very stale, very sideways.
00:57:29Yeah.
00:57:30No perforation.
00:57:31Nothing to go into.
00:57:32The very well organised defence from Newcastle.
00:57:34And they didn't deserve to win tonight.
00:57:36Very comfortable for Liverpool tonight.
00:57:38Yeah.
00:57:38I think there was still a little bit of pressure on Arna Slott
00:57:41to get a good result and a convincing result tonight.
00:57:44I think there was a feeling that it would be comfortable
00:57:46and it turned out that way.
00:57:48And I think when you look at Eketike
00:57:49and what he's doing at Liverpool,
00:57:52I mean, he's the star sign in this year, isn't he?
00:57:54I mean, it's been incredible, his start to life at Anfield
00:57:56and the way he's scoring goals at will.
00:58:01He's not only scoring, but he's also assisting as well.
00:58:04I mean, he's so direct.
00:58:06But then it's the presence of mind to pick the right pass.
00:58:08Florian Wirtz is obviously starting to show up now
00:58:11and starting to show his quality.
00:58:13But this was the goal of the night for Eketike.
00:58:15Lovely touch around the defender, then a little prod through
00:58:18and then the composure.
00:58:20I don't think we saw this when Liverpool signed him.
00:58:23I think when he was at Stuttgart, it was a little bit raw from him.
00:58:27But he suddenly found the composure,
00:58:29a massive confidence within himself as well.
00:58:32Top performance.
00:58:33Jules?
00:58:34Yeah, outstanding the way he's adapted.
00:58:36I know sometimes he's a little bit chaotic
00:58:38because he wants to go forward straight away
00:58:40and that will improve.
00:58:41But he's been outstanding and should make the World Cup.
00:58:44Do you think it helps that he knows in the main
00:58:46he's the man at the moment?
00:58:48I think there's a bit of that.
00:58:49And also his relationship with Wirtz.
00:58:51I think he is very important.
00:58:52I know Salah scored tonight, but this is becoming very much
00:58:55the Eketike Wirtz team.
00:58:57And finally, Manchester City, who sort of did enough?
00:59:01Yeah, I think that's fair to say.
00:59:03I want to say more.
00:59:05But what they did, I think a game against Galatasaray,
00:59:07which could have been quite tricky if they offered lots of errors.
00:59:10Instead, it was the opposite because they managed to get that two-goal lead
00:59:12into that first half.
00:59:13And I think Doku today was like a big part of that.
00:59:15And I think it's disappointing in some ways that he had to come off injured.
00:59:18What I liked in the game was the fact that sometimes he was narrow,
00:59:21but what a great pass this is for Erling Haaland.
00:59:23Instead of him thinking, I'm just going to need to take somebody on,
00:59:26he plays that through ball in Haaland there.
00:59:28It looks like a guy that's scoring every single week
00:59:30instead of one that's not scored in turn.
00:59:32So this was a big moment for the game, a big moment for City.
00:59:35And I think it kind of forced Galatasaray back.
00:59:36But again, with Doku, in this particular game,
00:59:39he's finding different types of space, but he's looking for the end product.
00:59:42It's a great stop by Chirky to find the space.
00:59:44Such.
00:59:44And did you ever doubt him in that position?
00:59:46Absolutely not.
00:59:47So Doku was really clever in the day.
00:59:49Somebody's dribbling, he's hard work and so on.
00:59:51But best of all, we always want to talk about our wingers with end product.
00:59:55And in those two moments there, they were massive for this game.
00:59:58But unfortunately, as I say, he had to come off in the game.
01:00:01And this was midway through the first half.
01:00:03And when he starts to find his form after having been out not too long ago,
01:00:06I think it's going to be disappointing because I think at times
01:00:08he can be the ex-factor for City.
01:00:09His decision-making has got so much better, hasn't it?
01:00:12Absolutely, yeah.
01:00:12And that's the big thing is, he's always had that ability
01:00:15and that ability to beat players.
01:00:16And sometimes, as a full-back, you'd actually think,
01:00:19sometimes I can let him get to the line because I know the quality
01:00:21is not going to quite be there.
01:00:23But now that quality and that decision-making has improved tenfold.
01:00:26I know they have an awful lot of options, don't they,
01:00:29in those players who could be behind Haaland,
01:00:32whether it's Foden or Cherky or Semenyo or Marmouche.
01:00:38But it still feels like if Doku is out for a bit, that's a big blow.
01:00:41Because ideally, what would you want?
01:00:42Doku one side and Semenyo the other?
01:00:44Yeah, I think so.
01:00:45But, you know, as we've seen from today's game,
01:00:47like, Semenyo and Gehi couldn't play, you know,
01:00:49so they couldn't necessarily continue to hit the ground running
01:00:51like they say Semenyo had done in recent weeks.
01:00:54But going into the knockouts,
01:00:55that does give them a different type of option.
01:00:57But I think the dynamism that the manager might want
01:00:59if you can have Doku and Semenyo,
01:01:02it does become a little bit lopsided,
01:01:03but ultimately injuries happen.
01:01:05You've got to find a way.
01:01:06Okay.
01:01:07Take a rest now.
01:01:08That was a long chat.
01:01:09All the drama lower down the table on the way.
01:01:12First, let's show you the goals from top of the table,
01:01:14Arsenal against bottom of the table, Cairo.
01:01:22And Havoc threads that one through beautifully.
01:01:25And Jokeres takes it and he's striding,
01:01:26gets the shot away!
01:01:27And Arsenal in front inside two minutes.
01:01:30Jokeres starts tonight as he finished in Italy a week ago
01:01:35with a slumptuous finish.
01:01:40Calafiore got himself in a bit of a tangle momentarily.
01:01:44Well, Schneider has been encouraged to go and have a look for himself.
01:01:49It does look pretty conclusive that Calafiore grabs hold of the back of Jorginho's jersey.
01:01:56Cairo have the perfect opportunity to draw level at the Emirates.
01:02:01Jorginho, and it's 1-1.
01:02:03Delight for these Cairo players!
01:02:05Who could not really have imagined themselves scoring here against the mighty Arsenal.
01:02:14He looks on the chase.
01:02:16Havoc is with him, Havoc takes over.
01:02:18Will he go for goal here?
01:02:19He will!
01:02:20And he'll find the back of the net!
01:02:22On his return to the starting line-up for the first time in nearly a year,
01:02:29Cai Havoc, who set up the first, scores the second.
01:02:34White, Norgaard, Havoc is in.
01:02:36Puts it on a plate for Jokeres, but the flag is up.
01:02:40Jokeres and Martinelli had a stab at that.
01:02:46It stands.
01:02:47It's 3-1 Arsenal.
01:02:49Martinelli got the final touch.
01:02:51Havoc certainly onside, and then as he knocks this across,
01:02:54Jokeres was level with him.
01:02:56Martinelli has his sixth goal of the campaign.
01:03:03Here's Kurgan.
01:03:06The cross is deep, and it's headed home at the back post by Ricardinho.
01:03:11Well, the final word tonight is for the champions of Kazakhstan.
01:03:19So, Jules, as far as Arsenal are concerned, played eight, won eight, finished top,
01:03:24and the most important thing now is that this year, that means you are guaranteed
01:03:28your home leg, second, the second leg at home, all the way through to the semifinals.
01:03:33All the way from the last 16, and if they qualify, quarter-final, semifinal,
01:03:38potentially, which is massive, which was not the case last season, for example.
01:03:42But I think it makes a massive difference.
01:03:44It was another incentive for you to try to finish in the top two.
01:03:47And off the back of what happened to them at the weekend, and all the talk of nerves,
01:03:50I know it was the side who were bottom of the Champions League,
01:03:52but they finished their Champions League with a 100% record.
01:03:57Don't be nervous.
01:03:58No.
01:04:00It's a great achievement, isn't it?
01:04:03I mean, they should have completed that tonight and got the job done, and they did it.
01:04:07But the way they've gone about the business in the first half of the Champions League stages,
01:04:12it was almost like, let's get the job done quickly.
01:04:14And the confidence from that has just built and built and built.
01:04:18We saw it last year, though.
01:04:19Liverpool topped the group comfortably and then got a very difficult draw against Paris Saint-Germain.
01:04:25There's going to be some tough games in this later stages.
01:04:27And another positive for them tonight, they have Kai Havertz.
01:04:30They're starting to introduce Kai Havertz back.
01:04:32So they've got all three of their number nines available for them.
01:04:36Yeah, absolutely.
01:04:37It's a big boost, you know.
01:04:38Him being out for so long, same for Gabriel Jesus.
01:04:40And now for Artetti, he has real significant options.
01:04:42And I personally thought Havertz, when he was fit previously,
01:04:45he was a big part of why Arsenal were successful.
01:04:47Would he be your first of the three?
01:04:49Or does it depend on the opposition?
01:04:50I think it must depend on the opposition, to be honest.
01:04:52Sometimes if you want someone like Jokeres to throw someone to the ground like that,
01:04:55then yeah, that works.
01:04:55But, you know, I think they've all got a sense of physicality about them.
01:04:59I think Havertz leads the line in a sort of different sort of way.
01:05:01Yeah.
01:05:02So if it ends up being that he does it for Artetti in any particular game, great.
01:05:05If it doesn't work, someone else can come on off the bench.
01:05:07Now, one of the stories of this Champions League season could be Bodo Glimt.
01:05:12Their heroics last week gave them an outside chance of the playoffs,
01:05:16if they could win away to Atletico Madrid.
01:05:22Everybody required back there for Bodo Glimt.
01:05:24Here is Julian Alvarez.
01:05:26Scored in all three of their home games in the league face so far.
01:05:30Hansko's ball in towards Serla, rising!
01:05:32And this time scoring!
01:05:35And it's the Norwegian against Bodo Glimt.
01:05:41Making in goal, flung himself to his right.
01:05:43Got a hand on it, but could only help it in.
01:05:47Mente's there to try and prevent that final pass reaching its intended destination.
01:05:52There's still work to do.
01:05:55Punched at Fett again, not giving this one up.
01:05:58Well, he's done really well.
01:05:59Bjorkan in support, provides the cross, and the finish is there!
01:06:03And Chauvald, Bodo Glimt to level!
01:06:06Well, even after going behind in a must-win match,
01:06:11they never let their heads drop.
01:06:14Atleti had plenty back and just didn't track the run of Frederic Chauvald.
01:06:21Bjorkan.
01:06:25Oh, he's still going.
01:06:26And he tried to pick the pass for Hu at the end of it.
01:06:28Evian's in there instead.
01:06:30Evian's in there instead.
01:06:31Evian with the save.
01:06:32And he couldn't quite get the shot away.
01:06:34He does though!
01:06:36Oh, incredible!
01:06:38Kasper Hu!
01:06:39The Bodo Glimt!
01:06:41What a scramble, but what a moment.
01:06:44And they're daring to dream that this adventure might yet continue.
01:06:49Atletico had chances to get that away.
01:06:51And they've paid a heavy price here.
01:06:55Might be one of the worst winning goals you've ever seen.
01:06:58Take it all day.
01:07:00They will take it.
01:07:02And what a story that is.
01:07:04Incredible.
01:07:04I mean, we talked about sporting.
01:07:06The other great story.
01:07:06But this is even probably more of a fairy tale of football.
01:07:10They played in the Europa League last year and did well.
01:07:12And Spurs knocked them out.
01:07:13They beat Roma 6-1 when Jose Mourinho.
01:07:15But to beat City last week at home on the plastic pitch right by the very north of Norway.
01:07:21And then to follow that up by going to Madrid at the Metropolitano and beat Atletico like they did.
01:07:27Being 1-0 down.
01:07:28And okay, getting a bit lucky through it.
01:07:30But still, they're incredible.
01:07:32They drew against Spurs.
01:07:33They should have won.
01:07:34They lost to Monaco.
01:07:34They should have won.
01:07:35So, they were unlucky.
01:07:36But no wins in their first six games in the Champions League.
01:07:39And then two wins in two.
01:07:40And that's it.
01:07:40Incredible.
01:07:41And so, they are in the playoffs.
01:07:43Couple of other games to clear up before we focus more on the bottom end of the table.
01:07:47And Atalanta were another side on 13 points.
01:07:50They needed a big win and event elsewhere to go their way when they faced Union Saint-Gilles Wells.
01:07:56The hosts coming into this match winless in their last seven against Italian sides.
01:08:02Things were different this time round.
01:08:04And that was Anand Kaleili scoring the winner midway through the second half.
01:08:10They go out though, De'Uni and Saint-Gilles was Atalanta into the playoffs despite that defeat.
01:08:18Now, Borussia Dortmund face Inter with both sides knowing they needed to win.
01:08:22And hope lots of other things went their way above them to make the top eight.
01:08:25The game was goalless at half-time.
01:08:28And in fact, it stayed goalless until the 80th minute.
01:08:31And then Federico Di Marco broke the deadlock for Inter with that free kick.
01:08:36At one point, they were in the top eight.
01:08:38But Chelsea and Sporting Lisbon changed that.
01:08:43Andy Duf getting the second for Inter deep into injury time.
01:08:46But those three defeats in a row prior to tonight proved costly for the Italians.
01:08:53They are in the playoffs.
01:08:56We've still got seven games to show you on the other side of this.
01:09:10So, you want me to tell you how to become a champion in Milan.
01:09:25Watch, and you will see.
01:09:32Brilliant. Let's focus on matters at the other end of the table then.
01:09:35And Patrick Geary can take us through three games starting with a pivotal meeting between
01:09:40Club Bruges and Marseille.
01:09:46Hundreds of years ago, visitors came to Bruges to trade.
01:09:49Marseille came intending to conquer.
01:09:52A win against Club Bruges would take them into the playoffs.
01:09:55For Bruges, hopes were more remote.
01:09:57But the Belgians very clearly still believe.
01:10:03There's Stankovic.
01:10:05Very much key, little lay-off there.
01:10:07It's a good early chance, blocked by Rooney and it's in.
01:10:10And Bruges are ahead.
01:10:13Club Bruges one, Marseille nil.
01:10:16The goalkeeper has not covered himself in glory there at all.
01:10:24Doing really well here at Club Bruges from the start.
01:10:27It's a dangerous block.
01:10:28And it's two.
01:10:28Oh, my God.
01:10:29Slept in brilliantly by Romeo Vermont.
01:10:32Brigger two, Marseille nil.
01:10:35That's a brilliant goal.
01:10:37That really is a wonderful strike.
01:10:43That's a good ball played out for Carlos Forbes.
01:10:46He's all alone.
01:10:47Can he seal it here?
01:10:48Good goalkeeping by Rooney, who had to stretch.
01:10:51Carlos Forbes first to the loose ball.
01:10:53Vermont is on the edge of the penalty area.
01:10:55Ball back here for Stankovic.
01:10:57Bruges.
01:10:58Brugger three.
01:10:59Marseille nil.
01:11:00Surely no doubt now that Brugger goes through to the playoffs.
01:11:03What a night for them.
01:11:06Good stop from Rooney initially.
01:11:08Then he has to backpedal.
01:11:09Who's getting out to the ball now?
01:11:11Quick.
01:11:11It's too slow.
01:11:12And that's, thank you very much, 3-0.
01:11:15So Club Bruges through remarkably comfortably.
01:11:17The stadium graphic congratulated Marseille on going through as well.
01:11:22Prematurely.
01:11:23Benfica weren't done when their goalkeeper scored their fourth goal.
01:11:27Marseille dropped out on goal difference.
01:11:30With the playoffs not yet guaranteed, PSV Eindhoven probably wouldn't have picked Bayern Munich to be their final league stage
01:11:37opponent.
01:11:38Bayern were already through, but not ready to go easy on them.
01:11:48And again here by Musiala.
01:11:50It's Musiala!
01:11:53Oh he's back.
01:11:55Back, back with the beauty.
01:11:58It's a special goal by a special player.
01:12:06Saibari.
01:12:08The give and go here.
01:12:10Saibari!
01:12:12Oh there's hope now for PSV with 13 to play.
01:12:19Do not write them off just yet.
01:12:26Oh, big long here now.
01:12:27Luis Diaz in behind for Bayern.
01:12:30Luis Diaz.
01:12:32Harry Kane!
01:12:34Emphatic.
01:12:36That finish was never in doubt was it from Kane.
01:12:40And Bayern back in front.
01:12:43Sickening for PSV, but just one more goal would have saved them.
01:12:46Instead, Mauro Jr. was booked for this challenge on Harry Kane,
01:12:50then got a second yellow just eight minutes later.
01:12:53He was off and PSV were out.
01:12:57These two sides began the night peering in different directions.
01:13:01Monaco looked nervously down beneath the playoff place's waterline.
01:13:05While Juventus knew a win and a fair wind could take them into the top eight.
01:13:10But when looking up, you can't forget to look back.
01:13:15They're going to look centrally here for Balogun.
01:13:18Kalulu is slipped. Balogun might be in here!
01:13:24But behind him, they're checking.
01:13:29Let's see what they're looking at.
01:13:31Push there on Kalulu.
01:13:35And that was pretty much that.
01:13:38Juve's chase of the top eight never got out the blocks.
01:13:41Both these sides are in the playoffs.
01:13:43Juventus will be seeded.
01:13:46Yeah, Monaco are through and they could play Paris Saint-Germain, actually.
01:13:50But we'll show you how the playoffs could pan out in just a second.
01:13:54That's a devastating blow for Marseille, isn't it?
01:13:56It is. Not just the fact that it happens very late for the Benfica-Trubin goal,
01:14:01but it's a massive failure for Roberto de Zerbi to start with
01:14:03because he's had money, he's had investment.
01:14:05This is a good team.
01:14:06A team that certainly is good enough to finish top 24.
01:14:08It's a massive disappointment for the football club
01:14:10that needed that qualification as well.
01:14:12Alright, just three more games to show you.
01:14:15To complete the picture, Sarah Mulkerins can talk you through.
01:14:18Starting with Ajax against Olympiacos.
01:14:24Both sides still had hopes of progression.
01:14:26A stronger chance for Olympiacos, who were just inside the playoff spots,
01:14:30while for Ajax it was slim.
01:14:32They were the lowest ranked side who could still make it through.
01:14:36Kasper Dahlberg thought he had put the hosts ahead,
01:14:38only for his effort to be ruled out for offside.
01:14:45Ajax then thought they should have had a penalty,
01:14:47but this potential handball from Julian Biancon
01:14:50was checked and cleared by VAR.
01:14:55It's Jason Martins!
01:14:57Olympiacos lead!
01:14:59The Greek champions rewarded for a very positive start to the second half.
01:15:06Ajax then had a chance to draw level.
01:15:09A second shout for handball.
01:15:11This one awarded after the referee went to the monitor.
01:15:16Here comes Dahlberg.
01:15:19And he finds the net!
01:15:23He shares his header!
01:15:25It's there!
01:15:25Knowing a draw wouldn't be enough,
01:15:27the Greek side held firm for the win
01:15:29to ensure their Champions League journey continues.
01:15:33For Bayer Leverkusen, the equation was simple.
01:15:37Victory against Villarreal would secure their spot in the playoff round.
01:15:41With the Spanish side already eliminated and a host of changes,
01:15:44they looked disjointed from the off.
01:15:49And there's a goal!
01:15:51It's exactly what Bayer Leverkusen were looking for,
01:15:54the early breakthrough.
01:15:56They know if they win, they can't be caught for a place in the top 24.
01:16:02Second goal, looks like it's on its way.
01:16:05And there it is.
01:16:08What a great finish from Malik Tillman!
01:16:14Lots of time on the ball here to pick their passes.
01:16:19Grimaldo! 3-0!
01:16:21Alejandro Grimaldo racked things up,
01:16:24his volley ensuring Leverkusen are still alive in the competition.
01:16:28In Limassol there was a first,
01:16:30as never before in European Cup and Champions League history
01:16:33have teams from Cyprus and Czechia faced off.
01:16:36With Slavia Prague already out,
01:16:39Pafos started the night needing a win,
01:16:41plenty of goals and results elsewhere to go their way.
01:16:44And they started with something special.
01:16:46Opens up for the strike if he wants to take it on!
01:16:48Oh, and he does!
01:16:49That is glorious!
01:16:54Dodera delivering early,
01:16:56another dangerous one and that is the leveler!
01:16:59Kalupek!
01:17:03Domingos Kina.
01:17:06Plenty of elevation on that,
01:17:07Lukassen.
01:17:09Drops to Bruno!
01:17:14Jan Barl was sent off for the visitors,
01:17:17so with Pafos a man up they pushed for goals and Anderson obliged.
01:17:22Orsic!
01:17:23Orsic!
01:17:30Orsic!
01:17:33And Pafos extend their lead to 4-1!
01:17:36Goal difference proved too much in the end for Pafos and so their fairytale first season in the Champions League
01:17:42draws to a close.
01:17:46I'll show you the teams that have been eliminated.
01:17:49There are some big European names there.
01:17:51Marseille have gone thanks to that late Benfica winner.
01:17:55PSV Athletic Club as well.
01:17:58They started tonight in the playoff places but they have gone after defeats to Bayern and Sporting.
01:18:03And Napoli have also bowed out.
01:18:06Antonio Conte side eventually finishing 30th.
01:18:11So let's show you the potential games in the knockout stages.
01:18:15And the draw is Friday morning, 11am, which you'll be able to watch it on the iPlayer.
01:18:22So what stands out for the English clubs here really and that's Newcastle in the playoffs.
01:18:29They're paired with PSG which means those two will get either Monaco or Carabag, Stephen, in the playoff part.
01:18:37Yeah, I think they'll both be happy with that.
01:18:39I think it's kind to, certainly Newcastle, we're looking at it from an English point of view.
01:18:44We're not going to jump on Jules' bandwagon of the French and what they're doing.
01:18:47We're looking at it from a Newcastle point of view.
01:18:49But I think Newcastle will be happy with either of those teams.
01:18:53And if they get through that then, Naidam, and you told me off earlier for looking too far ahead,
01:18:58Barcelona and Chelsea would be waiting for the winners.
01:19:02And if it follows the seedings, you would get Paris Saint-Germain, Newcastle, Barcelona and Chelsea in the same bracket.
01:19:08Yeah, absolutely.
01:19:09And I think the Chelsea, Barcelona are part of that.
01:19:11On paper, like historically, we say, oh, that's a really, really tough tie.
01:19:15But I think PSG, Newcastle on that side of the bracket, hopefully trying to fight their way into that.
01:19:19I think they'll find set of chances 100% to get a result against the other side.
01:19:22What stands out for you, Jules, when you look at it all?
01:19:25I think there's big ties coming up potentially as we see the Juventus, Atletico Madrid side of that draw.
01:19:32The big club, Brugio Galatasaray, is Tottenham and Liverpool.
01:19:34So two English clubs, again, I could face one Spanish and one Italian clubs.
01:19:39English teams would be favourite.
01:19:41But if you look past the playoffs and where the biggest team should win, really,
01:19:45you've got some incredible last 16 ties coming up.
01:19:48You really have. And then Real Madrid...
01:19:50For Manchester City, again, Real Madrid are in their same bracket and possibly Inter as well.
01:19:57You call it a conspiracy?
01:19:58No, I'm joking.
01:20:00Relax, relax, relax.
01:20:02Relaxed and clearly rattled.
01:20:04Mbappe again.
01:20:05It's not been the easiest show to get through to go and throw that in right at the very end.
01:20:10Look, how do you think the rest of...
01:20:12I know you can't speak for a whole continent.
01:20:14But how do you think the rest of Europe will be looking at the Premier League dominance as far as
01:20:18the top eight is concerned?
01:20:20All the time. I think it was expected from the beginning.
01:20:22This is the best league in the world. It's the most powerful clubs in the world, financially especially.
01:20:26And even if, as you know, I'm not sure the Premier League season is that great so far, they're still
01:20:33far too good for the rest.
01:20:34And when you see some Spanish clubs like Napoli, the Italian champions, struggling, Spanish clubs like Villarreal, third in the
01:20:40league, out of the Champions League, it shows you that it's too easy for English clubs.
01:20:43I mean, Guillaume Balogu actually sat there midway through this sort of league stage and went, it's surprising that it
01:20:49hasn't happened before, really.
01:20:51Yeah, I find that interesting.
01:20:52But I just think the league's so competitive in the Premier League and you take that quality in.
01:20:57I think the big thing is that because the Premier League is so competitive is that it actually hinders us
01:21:04at the back end of the Champions League because we're not as fresh.
01:21:07Right, that's it. Thank you to all three of you, Stephen, Nadam and Julian.
01:21:1118 games and 61 goals later, we are done.
01:21:16We're off for a lie down. See you for the playoffs next month. Good night.
01:21:19Good night.
01:21:30Good night.
01:21:33Good night.
01:21:45Good night.
