00:00A Sydney man attempting to export native reptiles overseas has been given the longest sentence
00:06ever given to an Australian wildlife smuggler. 61-year-old Neil Simpson has been sentenced
00:11to eight years in jail for attempting to export native reptiles to Hong Kong, Romania, South
00:18Korea and Sri Lanka between 2018 and 2023. It is an offence under federal environmental
00:25law to export regulated native species without a permit. Authorities initially
00:32seized 101 live lizards, skinks and dragons stuffed into calico bags and
00:39concealed in popcorn packets, biscuit tins and a handbag. But hundreds more were
00:45seized in subsequent searches. Three other people have been convicted for their roles in the operation.
