The Creator of the Winter Olympics

The Winter Olympics were created by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) under the leadership of Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern Olympic Games.

Pierre de Coubertin supported the idea that winter sports deserved their own Olympic competition, just like summer sports.

🏔️ How the Idea Became Reality

In the early 1920s:

Many countries had strong traditions in skiing, skating, and ice hockey

Athletes wanted a global winter sports event

The IOC approved a special winter sports festival

This led to the first Winter Games in 1924 in Chamonix, France.

At first, it was called:

“International Winter Sports Week”

Later, the IOC officially renamed it the first Winter Olympic Games.
🏔️ How the Winter Olympics Began

The Winter Olympics were created to celebrate sports played on snow and ice. Before 1924, winter sports were sometimes included in the Summer Olympics, but athletes and countries wanted a separate international event just for winter sports.
That idea became real in 1924 in Chamonix, France, when a winter sports festival was held. It was so successful that it was later officially named the first Winter Olympic Games.
❄️ The First Winter Olympics (1924)
Location: Chamonix, France
Countries: 16
Athletes: 258
Sports included: skiing, ice hockey, figure skating, bobsleigh, and more
These Games showed the world that winter sports deserved their own Olympic spotlight.
🌍 Growing Into a Global Event
Over time, the Winter Olympics became much bigger and more international:
1936 – First held outside Europe (in Germany)
1960 – First televised worldwide
1994 – Began being held separately from the Summer Olympics
Today, athletes from over 90 countries compete.
🧊 New Sports Over Time
The Winter Olympics didn’t stay the same — new sports were added as winter sports evolved:
Year Added Sport
1924 Ice hockey, figure skating
1964 Luge
1998 Snowboarding
2014 Ski halfpipe
2022 Big air (snowboarding & skiing)
🏆 Famous Winter Olympians
Some athletes became world-famous because of the Winter Olympics:
Sonja Henie – figure skating legend
Bjorn Daehlie – most medals for many years
Mikaela Shiffrin – modern skiing star
🕊️ The Winter Olympics Today
The Winter Olympics are now run by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and take place every four years, featuring:
Over 3,000 athletes
More than 15 winter sports
Billions of viewers worldwide
The Games promote peace, friendship, and fair competition, bringing together people from snowy mountains to icy cities all over the world.
Why There Were No Winter Olympics at First
When the modern Olympics began in 1896, the Games were created by Pierre de Coubertin to celebrate mainly summer sports like running, swimming, and gymnastics.
