Godolphin's pre-training and rehabilitation trainer Johnny Burke takes the TDN down the shedrow at his barn at Keeneland. He introduces us to stakes winners like First Resort, Think Big and Nash, as well as a few unraced 3-year-olds who he believes possess the raw talent for a bright future.

00:04I'm going to start up here with a horse that just came in off a layoff. He'd been out for
00:08some time, had a little bit of an issue, but he's back training. He's a horse called First Resort
00:14that won the Jockey Club last year and was on the Derby Trail for a brief period. And he's coming
00:22back as a four-year-old. It's an Uncle Mo out of Fair Maiden. Owen Harty trains. Fourth in the
00:28stake at Woodbine. I think it was a grade one. And a nice colt. Was very authoritative in his win
00:35of the Jockey Club, so we thought we were in a good spot. That's racing. It'll give you a curveball
00:42every now and again when you don't expect it. But Grand Horse, straightforward. He'll train here
00:48until probably March or April and then go back to Owen. More likely he'll stay at Torfway for the
00:54summer. This is an intermischief out of Amircall Lake Avenue. She was a decent filly. Intermischief,
01:01you can see the old man in him. Had some same thing again. Had some condo bruising, got some time
01:07off. This one is Billy Motts. This, you can see a bit of the Stormcat and the old man in
01:12him. He's
01:14just back on the tack here for the last two weeks. We have gloves off, placed twice. Ran in a
01:22stake
01:22here in the fall. In over his head a little bit. Went to Florida with Owen and had a bit
01:29of bad luck.
01:29And Tampa, I think he fractured there and they did the surgery in Florida. He's here for the last three
01:35weeks. And this is the filly you just saw leave. Her name is Syncopate. She's a gun runner and she's
01:43just still immature. So she's heading out to the farm for a while. Okay. Nothing, you know, it's just a
01:49matter of
01:49giving her more time to mature. This is a nice filly here. This is a half sister to Knightsbridge.
01:57This is a street sense. She was supposed to go to Florida to build on that van that left on
02:03the
02:03first. But she had a bit of a setback here and lost a month of training. And this is a
02:08nice filly. And
02:09it was probably a month that she benefited from because she was very immatureish. But she's a nice
02:15filly. She breezed yesterday. She's a typical Corlin. She needs a bit more time to come to herself.
02:22But she's doing very well. I expect her to go back to Brad here during the meet. I'll get her
02:28up to a
02:29half mile before she leaves. That's about as far as I'd breeze them per se, you know. I mean to
02:35stay
02:35longer they breeze more. But I don't usually work them five-eighths anymore, you know. I like to let
02:40them have the transition when they leave here to keep forward. So she'd probably go over to him
02:44during the meet. And she's a nice filly. And we gave her plenty of time because she's a typical of
02:50a Corlin physically and mentally. But she's coming together really well. This is Rose Room. This is
02:59Mike Stidham's. This filly was fourth in a stake at Kentucky Downs. She's a winner. That's a massage
03:06machine. It's called a Niagara. It's a great machine. This filly got turned out. She just needed
03:12time. She's a ghost sapper. She'll get better with age. She'll go back to Mike here in the spring
03:17meet. And she's probably a stakes caliber at Colonial. And she likes the turf. Okay. This is
03:24Infinite Sky. This filly ran in the Breeders' Cup card out there. This is a filly. I think she was
03:29second with Brad Cox. And she went out to the Breeders' Cup turf. And we end up taking a chip
03:35out of her
03:35knee. So she got some time off. So she's just come back in under tack. And she'll go back to
03:41Brad Cox
03:42here during the meet. Okay. This filly is Mike Stidham's here. This filly is stakes placed in the
03:49sorority stakes at Monmouth. And a winner at Colonial, I believe. Needed time off. She'll go back to Mike.
03:56She'll end up going up to Colonial again. This is Connor. This is the most, that's Mike. This is the
04:04most noble of professions right here. The farrier. Thanks for fixing that shoe on your
04:11buddy there buddy. All right. This is, this is a colt to have a lot of, a lot of time
04:20for
04:20this horse. This is one of owns. Ran twice. Hit the board twice. He's an Uncle Mo. He's out of
04:27a
04:27mare called Mowity. She was stakes placed, greatest stakes placed and a stakes winner. And she's
04:35a Bernie mare. And she was a filly that we broke at the farm in James Lane quite a number
04:44of years back. And this is an Uncle Mo out of her. This is a horse by Nyquist out of
04:52a good
04:52mare called Octave. That's going back a ways now. Has limited talent. He's had a few issues.
05:00He ran once in Delaware last year. Didn't quite live up to par. Live up to the pedigree. There's
05:06nothing wrong with him. But this is a situation where this horse could end up in the rehoming
05:11program. Which is great because, you know, you got to look after him a little bit. And if
05:16he's not quite up to par, I mean there's nothing wrong with claiming races at the higher level.
05:21So, so we're still evaluating this guy. And we do the rehoming out of this barn as well.
05:27Okay. This is Jefferson Street. Didn't quite live up to his form. He came back here. Had a
05:37little setback. I've gelded him since. We don't keep a lot of five-year-olds in the program.
05:42But there's this guy here in Nash. Nash's stakes placed. They'll, this is Brad Cox's. And Nash,
05:49no, this is Bill Mott's and Nash's Brad's. They'll end up going back there probably after
05:55the meet. And they've got conditions if they can win a stake, right? Just think big. You
06:03probably know this guy. He's a stakes winner here. He's a sprinter on the turf. And he'll
06:08go back to Mike Stidham during the meet here. I think this horse was placed in a stake at Saratoga.
06:16This guy can run a little bit. Now, I had him here as a two-year-old into his three
06:20-year-old
06:21year. And at the time, he'd had a stress fracture in front. He was healed up good. And I was
06:27just
06:27looking, I said, Michael, we might be better just cutting this horse, you know, making a
06:31gelding out of him. And it turned out all right, you know. Like I said, he's a lot of fun
06:35to have
06:35in the barn. And he's a five-year-old, but these old sprinters get better with age, you know.
06:40And this is the other gelding I talked about, Nash. He'll go back to Brad Cox. Stakes placed.
06:47I think he's won three. So there's still a few miles on this guy. Most of the time,
06:51these families that come through here, it's just a matter of horses needing a bit more time.
06:57This barn's opened 20 years in October. So I've seen a lot of the dams popping up. And now the
07:02dams are
07:03the daughters of dams and stuff. Along the way, these mares will end up with a nice horse that
07:10will just have a little bit of a bump in the road, needs a bit of time to get caught
07:14up. And this is
07:15an ideal place to do it without losing much time, you know. And it helps them develop a little bit
07:20as well. So they're never really off the track unless they're in a paddock for a month. But it all
07:26benefits the horse in the end. We've had some good ones in here over the years. With Mystic Guide,
07:31winning the Dubai Cup was a big, big plus. And Highland Falls was a horse that I always had a
07:37lot of time for him, you know. I had the fortune to name him. Soventry was in the league of
07:44his own.
07:44He was a ton of class. He was here for a couple of months. And immersive I'd had a couple
07:51of times.
07:51She's doing very well. And good cheer. She was another filly that I saw her in Payson last month.
07:57She looks great. She looks great. She should come back a little stronger this year.
08:02In the first group that came in here, as I call it, the charter group, there was two fillies that
08:08I was quite fond of. One was Music Note and one was Cocoa Beach. And they were good fillies. But
08:15they
08:16just had Zenyatta was the only problem there. I think Cocoa Beach was second to her. And I think
08:26Music Note might have been second and third to her. And Music Note ended up, of course,
08:32being the dam of Mystic Guide. So they were two special fillies. And they were in my first group here
08:39that 2006, October. I trained publicly in Paris Pike for about 15 years. And then Jimmy Bell called me
08:49up and asked me if I would be interested in doing this. And I said, yeah.
