00:00Liver disease does not mean alcohol. Yes, alcohol can cause liver disease, but there's 18 different causes of liver disease
00:07and more.
00:08Meeting patients when it's too late and I felt like up to now within my career I seem to always
00:13be trying to close the door when the horse has already bolted
00:16and I want to get ahead of the horse and ahead of the door so that we can start changing
00:21things for people.
00:22Prevalence of liver disease is growing year on year on year and we've certainly found that it's now the third
00:28biggest killer
00:29and year on year what is scary is that liver disease is the fastest cause of cancer related deaths.
00:36I won the Chief Nursing Officer for Wales Award and that was based on the work that I'm doing around
00:42increasing the awareness and early identification of liver disease.
00:47Within our acute outreach clinics and our health promotion events that we do when we're testing members of the public
00:53we're picking up 10 to 13% of the population have got a level of liver disease.
00:57But additional to that there's a good 1 or 2% have got very advanced disease so being able to
01:03identify them early does completely change their health trajectory.
01:07It's important for the general public to understand what's going on with their liver because there's so much that we
01:13can do to correct it.
01:1590% of liver disease can be reversible. The liver is an amazingly robust organ.
01:20What I would love the general public to start doing is having a look and thinking about their liver.
01:25The liver and liver disease doesn't necessarily have symptoms until it's too late and that horse is bolted.
01:32So if you're at risk with regards to metabolic conditions like, as I've mentioned before, thyroid disease or diabetes, cholesterol
01:42problems, blood pressure problems,
01:44get curious as to how your liver health could be.
01:47If you're feeling tired, if you're feeling sluggish, could it be that we need to look at lifestyle changes to
01:52make sure that your liver is doing okay?
01:54Our next health event was a chronic conditions health event and that will be on the 13th of May in
02:00the Rugby Club in Aberystwyth.
02:02And it will be opening from 10 in the morning until 7 at night.
