Avant même le coup d’envoi de la demi-finale aller de Copa del Rey entre l’Atlético de Madrid et le FC Barcelone, l’état de la pelouse du Riyadh Air Metropolitano suscitait des inquiétudes. Plusieurs médias évoquaient une surface fragilisée par les conditions météo récentes à Madrid, entre pluie, froid et neige, rendant le terrain plus lourd et instable.  La pelouse avait été remplacée fin novembre 2025 après le passage des Miami Dolphins pour un match de NFL dans la capitale espagnole. Le club madrilène avait fait appel à la société néerlandaise GrassMaster Solutions, spécialisée dans le gazon hybride. Malgré cela, certaines zones se seraient dégradées, affectant les appuis et la qualité des rebonds.  Dès la 6e minute, le terrain s’invite dans le scénario du match. Sur une passe en retrait d’Eric Garcia, Joan Garcia manque son contrôle et le ballon termine au fond des filets. Plusieurs récits du match soulignent un rebond irrégulier. Durant la rencontre, des glissades sont également relevées, notamment celle de Nahuel Molina dans le camp adverse.  Après la rencontre, Joan Laporta évoque publiquement un “mauvais état du terrain” parmi les éléments ayant pesé sur la soirée du Barça.
