00:30Hello, everybody. It is Tuesday, June the 24th.
00:34Countdown is sound-checked.
00:36The stage is set, and we're ready for a quarterfinal
00:39that really does deserve top billing.
00:43And front of the house for us, of course,
00:45is our guardian of the dictionary, Susie Dent,
00:47alongside the festival stalwart that is whispering Bob Harris,
00:51and not a welly in sight for Rachel Riley.
00:56Although always good to pack him when you're heading to Glastonbury,
00:59gates open tomorrow, thousands of people right now
01:02heading down to Worthy Farm.
01:05I took wellies to a festival only once,
01:09and I didn't realise it was on artificial grass.
01:11LAUGHTER
01:12Right, so to warm us up, I'm going to give you band names.
01:17You've just got to tell me, do these bands exist?
01:19Or have I made it up? Just a little bit of fun.
01:21I would be looking in this direction quite a lot, I think.
01:24Horse, the band.
01:26Yes.
01:27Yeah, you're going to go for Horse, the band?
01:28I think so.
01:29I'm going yes.
01:29It is indeed.
01:30They're a metalcore band from California.
01:32They've actually done quite well, been on and off for ages.
01:35They exist, but you can start this one off for us, Bob.
01:38What about Afraid of Figs?
01:40I wouldn't say no.
01:41No. Susie?
01:42Definitely.
01:43They're definitely a tribute band to Afraid of Prunes,
01:46so I'm going yes.
01:47From Seattle, they exist, yes.
01:50Oh, goodness me.
01:52Right, let's get the top of the bill straight away.
01:55We really, from a long way out,
01:56I think Ami had only won four games,
01:58and we were talking and said,
02:00imagine if Ami played Christine in a quarterfinal or semifinal.
02:03It is the quarterfinal.
02:04We're so excited about this.
02:06Ami, it's like you never left.
02:08Welcome back.
02:10It's good to be back.
02:11Still as terrified as ever.
02:13Well, I don't know why you are,
02:14because, you know, an octo-champ was 750 points,
02:17and it was this month you became octo-champ.
02:20I feel like, you know,
02:21like if a footballer has the summer off,
02:23it takes a while to get back up to speed.
02:26I feel like that's your advantage.
02:27You're still in match mode, aren't you?
02:29I would much rather be in that chair,
02:30but, yeah, I never expected to get this far,
02:34so every win after the first was a plus.
02:37Yeah.
02:38Well, the final straw, which is your nickname,
02:40you nearly were in that chair
02:42because there's only 11 points between you as fourth seed
02:45and Christine Smith as fifth seed.
02:48This is our only all-octo-champ quarterfinal.
02:51And, Christine, something that we had to work out
02:53after you left last time,
02:55you're Countdown's oldest ever octo-champ.
02:59At 79, but you've had your 80th birthday,
03:02and we're counting that.
03:03So we're going to say our first-ever octogenarian octo-champ.
03:07By six years as well, you know that?
03:09Oh, you're a legend of Countdown.
03:11Oh, wow.
03:13Do you believe now that you could be the series champion?
03:17Well, I'm still reeling, you know.
03:19I'm really, you know, I'm amazed that I've got this far.
03:23What did all the family think when they were watching them back?
03:26Well, they're really pleased, so, you know,
03:29I think they're a bit staggered, yeah, but, yeah.
03:32We adore you, and Rachel missed your 8th win, of course,
03:36when you were off, but you did leave the Big Apple behind
03:39as her nickname, Granny Smith Big Apple, and look at this.
03:42Christine is embracing the nickname.
03:44She brought an apple for the teacher.
03:46How good is that?
03:47Only one question.
03:48Ami, where's my punnet of strawberries?
03:51I did give you something before.
03:53You did?
03:53You brought me a Kokoro sheet, which, let me tell you,
03:56this is a lot more enjoyable, but I appreciate both.
03:59I'll take it.
04:01Nerd!
04:02You can have it.
04:04Well, it's already a joy.
04:06Every round is going to be sensational with Ami and Christine,
04:09two huge personalities.
04:11Can't wait to do this.
04:12Let's get on with it.
04:1315 rounds of quarterfinal count time.
04:18Round one, Ami.
04:20Good afternoon, Rachel.
04:21Afternoon, Ami.

05:23Time's up, Ami.
05:29Just a seven.
05:30Christine.
05:31Six.
05:32It's interesting use of the word just from Ami.
05:35You're going to have to get used to that.
05:37Christine, the six.
05:39Shrimp.
05:40Shrimp.
05:41And for you, Ami?

05:47Goodness me, great spot.
05:49Armpits it is.
05:50How did you get on, Mr Harris?
05:51We've got a seven and an eight, actually.
05:54Our seven is in parts.
05:56Yes.
05:56And the eight is pastrami.
05:59Yes.
05:59Nice stuff.
06:01Pastrami.

07:25the whole way through that round. Ami?
07:28I'm not sure how to say finagles.
07:31Yeah, one of my favourite words. Very good indeed.
07:34APPLAUSE
07:37Yeah, really good start by Ami.
07:3915-0 as it stands at the moment, early days.
07:41What can we add, Dexamere Corner?
07:43Well, just finagle... To finagle something is to pulloin it,
07:46it's to take it by devious means. It's such a brilliant word.
07:50Yes. And we walk like an Egyptian.
07:53Right.
07:55Right, numbers for the first time today.
07:58Ami, what a great start. Let's see if you can keep it up.
08:00No surprises. One large.
08:03Well, you never know. It's the final snail.
08:05You might have to change your tune later.
08:06But for now, one large, five little.

09:18Your first tea-time teaser today is live a lot.
09:21Live a lot.
09:22You might live a lot longer without this kind of temperament.
09:25You might live a lot longer without this kind of temperament.
09:28APPLAUSE
09:43Welcome back.
09:44Volatile was the tea-time teaser answer.
09:46Not a bit of volatility in the studio today, but great competition.
09:49Ami and Christine.
09:51Let's start it up again, Christine, your letters.

11:11Wonderful. How did you get on there, Bob?
11:12Well, we've got poached for seven as well.
11:15And asphodel for eight. Asphodel.
11:20Yeah, plant of the lily family.
11:23The chapel's all got Ami and Christine.
11:25Seven point seats. Let's go again.
11:27May start with a consonant again, please.
11:29Thank you, Ami. W. And another.
11:33T. And another.

12:03Here we go.
12:04In the alphabet.
12:13In the alphabet.
12:15There is a vowel, please.
12:19In the alphabet.
12:20In the alphabet.
12:21Cleric.
12:21In the natural.
12:22In the alphabet.
12:23Are there?
12:23In the alphabet, please.
12:25There is a vowel or letter.
12:27In the alphabet.
12:28On the alphabet.
12:29In the alphabet.
12:30There is a vowel.
12:31Try again.
12:31Put round those.
12:32As.
12:32You think?
12:33Ami, how many?
12:36Six.
12:37And for you, Christine?
12:38Six.
12:39Ami?
12:39Tokens.
12:40And for you, Christine?
12:42Atones.
12:42Atones, there you go.
12:44Very nice.
12:45Sixes all round.
12:46What about dictionary corner?
12:47Same.
12:48Tokens.
12:48Tokens.
12:49I quite like snook, as in to cock a snook at someone when you do that.
12:53That's just a five.
12:54It was a tricky one.
12:54Yeah, and I like wonkas, but it's not in the dictionary.
12:58Let's just get more numbers, see if it's a golden ticket for Christine
13:02as she tries to get back into this.
13:03Your choice.
13:05One large and five small, please.
13:07You're not gambling just yet, either.
13:09Trying to play it safe.
13:10Let's see if those tactics pay off.
13:12Five little ones.
13:13Two.
13:14Seven.
13:15One.
13:17Six.
13:18And nine.
13:18And the large one, 25 this time.
13:21And your target.
13:22750.
13:24750.
13:24Numbers up.
13:327-5-0.
13:58Christine?
13:58750.
13:59And for you, Ami?
14:00750.
14:01Yeah.
14:02Off you go, Christine.
14:037-2 is 5.
14:055.
14:05Times a 6.
14:06Is 30.
14:07Times 25.
14:08If you know your 25 times table, that takes about one second.
14:11Yeah, loads of ways in.
14:12Same way?
14:13Yeah.
14:14Hee-hee-hee.
14:15Yeah.
14:15Well done.
14:16Well done.
14:16APPLAUSE
14:16I still think very easy sitting at home.
14:20So many ways into that.
14:22Sitting there in a quarterfinity, you still got to make sure you've got it.
14:24So let's head to Dictionary Corner for a second chat of the week with Bob Harris.
14:29You know, it's nowadays even more, Colin, that I look back and think how blessed I was to do the Old Grey Whistle Test in the 70s, you know.
14:38And it's a programme that did take me all over the world.
14:41And one of our trips in 78 was to the island of Nassau where Chris Blackwell, who was the head of Island Records at the time, had his studios.
14:53And another person on the island that time, who I've become really close friends with through the years, Peter Framson.
15:01Wow.
15:02And Peter decided that we were going to go out deep sea fishing one day.
15:07And we got onto this wonderful, I mean, it was so glamorous and so incredible, out into the sea.
15:16And the lads decided that they wanted to go for a swim.
15:20So there was one of these little inflatable boats that you had an outboard motor on.
15:27So we jumped into this boat and sort of went away from the main yacht that we'd gone out there on.
15:35And I was sitting back thinking how idyllic and beautiful this moment was.
15:40And then, this sounds very unlikely, but this is absolutely true.
15:43I saw a fin arriving through the water, coming straight at them.
15:48So I started shouting, guys, guys, you know, there's this shark coming at them.
15:55And, of course, they're swinging for their lives.
15:57And this shark came underneath us and tried, bumping the boat, trying to turn it over.
16:04Wow.
16:04And, of course, at moments like that, can you get the outboard motor going?
16:08No, of course you can't.
16:09You know, it was, why isn't this, and this thing was, it was, it was dramatic.
16:13It was, it was amazing and dramatic.
16:16But the lovely thing in this sort of full circle moment is that Peter and I are still very much in touch.
16:21We still see each other whenever we can.
16:24He was over in London doing some filming recently.
16:26He reminded me of it the other day, which is why I thought to tell the story today.
16:30Sharks for me, keep them in the sea.
16:32I think you have to be mad to go anywhere near them, Rachel.
16:35I really do.
16:36Thank you very much, Bob.
16:39Right, let's get back to the game.
16:40It's been 15 points in it for quite some time.
16:43Now, Ami, our fourth seed, out to a really early lead.
16:46And since then, it's been neck and neck.
16:49So let's get back to it.
16:50And, Ami, you're picking these letters.
16:53May I have a consonant, please?
16:54Thank you, Ami.
16:55P.
16:56And another.
16:57And a consonant, please.
17:14And a consonant, please.
17:18And a consonant, please.
17:22And start the clock.
17:27And a consonant, please.
17:56Ami.
17:57I'm not sure if it's with a capital letter, but seven.
18:00And for you, Christine?
18:02I'll try seven.
18:03Ami.
18:04Puritan.
18:05Puritan.
18:06And for you, Christine?
18:07Uptrail.
18:08Puritan, as in somebody with sort of quite strict moral beliefs, etc., is in, in the generic
18:14sense.
18:14I'm not sure, though, Christine, about uptrail.
18:18It's not there, I'm afraid.
18:20I'm sorry.
18:20Well, you need to uptrail your score, Christine.
18:23I'm doing my best to get it in a future dictionary.
18:24You need to uptrail your score.
18:2622 points in it.
18:27But, of course, 10 points for the final round.
18:29So not that much to make up.
18:31How did you get on there, Bob?
18:32Much the same.
18:33Unitary was the other one.
18:34Yes.
18:35Yeah.
18:35And that's a seven, too.
18:36Excellent.
18:38Wonderful stuff.
18:38Christine, let's get straight back on the horse.
18:40A consonant, please.
18:42Thank you, Christine.
18:43C.
18:44And another.
18:46R.
18:47And a vowel.
18:49O.
18:50And a consonant.
18:53Q.
18:54And another consonant.
18:56D.
18:58And a vowel.
18:59A.
19:00And a consonant.
19:03T.
19:04And a vowel.
19:05A.
19:08And another vowel.
19:10And lastly, U.
19:13Hide down.
19:13MUSIC PLAYS
19:35Christine.
19:45Five.
19:46And for Ami?
19:48Probably made up four.
19:49A six, sorry.
19:50Probably made up six.
19:53Christine hopes so.
19:54What's the five?
19:56Quart.
19:56Quart.
19:57You were very happy with that U.
19:59And for you, Ami?
20:00I added the O at the end.
20:02Quarto.
20:02Quarto is absolutely in the dictionary, yes.
20:05It's a book page size.
20:07I'm sorry, Christine.
20:09Key moment there.
20:10Christine spotted putting the O1 just a little too late.
20:13A great effort to get a six.
20:14Can we even match it?
20:16We can up it to a seven with autocar.
20:22An autocar.
20:23Bit dated now.
20:23Autocar.
20:24Yeah.
20:25But that's what they were once called back in the early 1900s.
20:29Simply a motor vehicle.
20:31OK, here we go then.
20:32Let's get us our numbers game, Ami.
20:34State of course.
20:35One large.
20:36One large.
20:37You're not deviating.
20:38You know what you want.
20:39And it's one big and five little.
20:42Fingers crossed.
20:43Coming up for you, Ami.
20:44Six, five, ten, five, six, and 100.
20:50And the target to make with them, 266.
20:53Two, six, six.
20:54Numbers up.
21:25Two, six, six is the target, Ami.
21:28Two, six, six, I think.
21:29For you, Christine?
21:30I think I've got two, six, six.
21:32It's not properly written down.
21:33That means, Christine, you go first.
21:35Ten divided by five times 100.
21:38200.
21:38200.
21:39Six plus five is 11.
21:42Yep.
21:43Times six is 66.
21:46Don't sound so doubtful.
21:47That's perfect.
21:47Two, six, six.
21:48Same way, Ami?
21:50Not at all.
21:51Brilliant.
21:52Five plus five plus six.
21:54Five plus five plus six, 16.
21:56Still 16 times 10.
21:58Times 10, 160.
22:00And then I add the 100 and the remaining six.
22:03Lovely.
22:04That'll do as well.
22:04Well done.
22:05APPLAUSE
22:06I love that.
22:08Yep.
22:08Still 16.

22:11Sober Ted is your second Tea Time teaser.
22:14Sober Ted.
22:15Straddled the small French restaurant, perhaps.
22:18Straddled the small French restaurant, perhaps.
22:21Yeah, hello again.
22:37Straddled the small French restaurant, perhaps.
22:39You've seen the answer.
22:41Bistrode.
22:42That's the straddled bit.
22:43You're going to have to explain the connection to a French restaurant.
22:46So, yes, to bestride is to straddle, but bistrode, bistro, bistro.
22:49Oh, yes, then B-I rather than B-E.
22:52Tenuous.
22:53Tenuous.
22:53Oh, I like that one.

24:23Oh, that's fantastic, Bob, isn't it?
24:24Yeah, it is. It's really, really good.
24:26What can you do about it, Christine, other than just enjoy it as we go?

25:39Seven. Christine?
25:41Six. The six is the big apple.
25:43Bigots. And the final straw.
25:47Well, we'll go for a condom favourite, agoutis.
25:49Agoutis. Yes, the giant guinea pigs. Well done.
25:52Oh, the giant guinea pig is back.
25:54You couldn't see beyond the goat. That's the problem, Christine.
26:00And I couldn't see beyond goat bums, which is definitely not there.
26:03How did you get on there, Bob?
26:05We have got an eight.
26:07Wow, you do. Is it goat bums? Am I wrong?
26:10No, we're not. Happily not.
26:12Bigamous. Bigamous? Bigamous.
26:14Are you married to that? Are you sure?
26:17I'm wedded to this idea.
26:19Well spotted. Well spotted. Right.
26:21Well, listen, I'm definitely staying hitched to Dictionary Corner
26:24because it's Origins of Words, Susie.
26:25Yes, I had an email from Michelle James who contacted me on social media.
26:29Why do we use so many French terms in cookery?
26:32And it's true. Most of our gastronomic vocabulary is indeed French.
26:36A lot of that goes back to the Norman Conquest.
26:39But it was particularly during the Victorian era that it became de rigueur,
26:43which means in strictness.
26:45So, strictly speaking, this is what you should use.
26:47And restaurant is a restorative place.
26:50That's from French.
26:51We might go à la carte, meaning from the menu, card.
26:55And for dessert, which comes from the French for clear the table in readiness for the pudding.
27:00You might have a profita roll, which is a profitable pudding.
27:04I like that. It does you good.
27:06Or an eclair, which famously is a cream cake that goes down so quickly
27:10that it comes from the French for a flash of lightning, which is great.
27:14We have haute cuisine.
27:16We have a cordon bleu course, of course, which looks back to the blue ribbon
27:20that, before the French Revolution, indicated the highest order of chivalry
27:24that you could get under the Bourbon kings.
27:27And that began to spread its wings a little bit.
27:31And in 1827, a cookbook called Le Cordon Bleu, une nouvelle cuisinière bourgeoise,
27:36meaning the blue ribbon or the new bourgeois cooking, style of cooking,
27:43was published in Paris.
27:45And cordon bleu cookery classes actually began as early as 1896 at the Palais Royale.
27:50So, French and food definitely go together.
27:54I don't think any of us could argue with that,
27:55but it turns out the language is pretty much exclusively theirs as well.
27:58Thank you so much.
28:01Hey, not to put too fine a point on it, but Ami is in the box seat right now.
28:06What a performance.
28:0785, our brilliant Christine Smith on 43.
28:10Almost just can sit back and admire how good she's been.
28:14But, Christine, four rounds to go.
28:16You probably need a maximum here.
28:17Let's get your letters.

28:21Thank you, Christine.

28:24And another.

28:51And a vowel.
28:51And aせong.
28:52And a vowel.
28:52Here.
28:54I think it's about a vowel.

29:31Renowned. Renowned is there. Well done, Ami.
29:33Brilliant.
29:35Brilliant. Anything we added to you?
29:38No, we had endower, somebody who endows, otherwise the seven.

31:0320 points still left, Christine.
31:05You just have to hold your hands up,
31:07but are you going to make it easier for her
31:09to add to that score, or are you going to be
31:11a bit difficult? I'm going to go out with a bang.
31:13We'll have four large, please.
31:15Four large. You've got to work for these points
31:17and two little ones. Let's have some fun.

32:2841 points. No, it's not.
32:31Could you imagine if we could do that?
32:34Right, 101 plays 61.
32:36Oh, you know, it's Ami's through to the semi-final.
32:39For Christine to go 20 points to end her reign would be something else.
32:43But let's find out. Fingers on the buzzers, please.
32:46It's our quarterfinal Countdown Conundrum.
32:58Christine.
33:18I know it's not, but abortiver.
33:21Abortiver.
33:22Have a look.
33:23Rest of time, to Ami.
33:29I just wonder, is it musical, like a vibretto or something like that in that world of music?
33:35But we don't know, so let's find out.
33:37River boat.
33:38No doubt Bob's been in the Mississippi on a river boat with a megastar.
33:42We don't have time, Bob.
33:43But we do have time to just pay tribute to Christine Smith, our oldest ever OctoChamp,
33:48and a great story.
33:49You were on all those years ago and got beaten on a crucial Countdown Conundrum,
33:53won her first game in a crucial, and went on to become our oldest ever OctoChamp.
33:57I hope you know how much we love you, and I hope you know that you're a Countdown immortal.
34:01I was just pleased to come back.
34:03It's lovely.
34:03Thank you very much.

34:11Well done to you.
34:12Excellent stuff.

34:18It is indeed, and no time for Ami to catch her breath.
34:22She's back tomorrow.
34:24She's taking on her number one seed, Rhys Jones.
34:27She could be the final straw for the word.
34:29We shall see.
34:30We cannot wait.
34:31Tomorrow it is.
