00:01Plans for a new elective care hub at Chapel Allerton Hospital in Leeds have been approved, with NHS England backing
00:08a £32 million investment aimed at increasing capacity for planned spinal and orthopaedic surgery.
00:15The scheme, led by Leeds Teaching Hospital's NHS Trust, will see a new 23-bed ward, two operating theatres and
00:23a dedicated admissions area built as an extension to the existing theatres suite.
00:28The Trust says separating scheduled operations from busier emergency sites, including Leeds General Infirmary and St James' Hospital, will help
00:37ensure procedures can continue throughout the year.
00:40When fully operational, the hub is expected to deliver more than 1,600 additional elective cases annually.
00:48Funding from NHS England and the West Yorkshire Integrated Care System will also support the recruitment of 142 additional staff.
00:57Construction is anticipated to begin in the first half of this year, with the facility planned to open in November
01:032027.
01:05It's thought that dedicated elective hubs like this are crucial to cutting waiting times, by allowing surgery to go ahead
01:12all year round.
01:13The Trust says some trees will be removed during building works, with around 20 new trees planted on site and
01:20more than 200 planted elsewhere to meet biodiversity requirements.
01:24The Clinical Genetics Service will temporarily relocate while construction is underway.
