00:00Are you the new Daryl Brown? We'll see the season hopefully. I'm hoping to break his records.
00:06So is Giovanni Bob Semple on track to break Daryl Brown's junior record in the 100 meters?
00:12Brown's record is currently 10.01 seconds, a blistering time he achieved at the World
00:18Championships in Paris in 2003. He was 18 at the time. Before that, Brown had been progressing to
00:25the mark with a previous personal best of 10.24 seconds. It's a crucial start to look at
00:30considering Bob Semple is also 18 now and he set his personal best of 10.36 seconds only last year.
00:39The Abilene Wildcats sprinter believes he can go faster and he's targeting Krifter trials at the
00:44end of February to attempt to reach the mark or get closer to it. There's the Krifter trials coming up
00:50and also the Krifter game so I'm aiming to be able to compete by then.
00:54Did you compete at the last Krifter? No, I didn't. I didn't qualify for the Krifter team.
01:01That was early in the season. I wasn't as developed. So I'm aiming to make the team this year and
01:08do my
01:08best. He's coached by Charlie Joseph and believes the Krifter qualification may be in the bag with
01:14the standards set at 10.50 seconds in the 100 meters. He has spent 12 years at Abilene Wildcats and
01:21says
01:21he's always been at the top of the pack growing up. Now it's about knocking off seconds to hopefully
01:27break the sub 10 barrier. That's a very challenging thing to do. It takes a lot of dedication because
01:36when you're already 10.36 at considered, that's considered pretty fast already. So in order
01:42to get even faster, you have to be very disciplined. You have to basically take control of everything in
01:50your life. You have to dedicate your life to the training because it's a lot of small things that
01:55you have to work on in order to get those improvements. He has had his challenges balancing
01:59school and training. He travels from Port of Spain to Arima often to train.
02:04Right now, I'm currently a student at Fatima College. So balancing the school life and track
02:09and field, it's very challenging at times in terms of time management for me specifically.
02:15But I try my best in terms of planning out my day and what I'm supposed to do at what
02:22time.
02:22Bob Semple prays and meditates to get himself in the right mind for competition. He believes
02:28the being champion boosts his confidence and it helps to have a strong mind.
02:33Well, I do a lot of prayer, a lot of scripture reading. I also do a lot of meditation because
02:39track and field is a very mental sport. You don't really have a team to say. You have your
02:46training members, but on competition day, it's usually yourself. So you're in your own mind a lot.
02:52So I would say you have to take control of your own mind because you could either be
02:56your own enemy or it could be your best trait. The name Jareem Richards carries weight in Abilene.
03:03I look up to Jareem Richards. He is the current world silver medalist in the 400 meters. I think
03:10he's a very good role model for young athletes. Training Rad is currently in a developing state
03:18in terms of our senior track and field. So I would say he's the pioneer for the young athletes coming
03:24up.
03:24A new athlete capable of breaking Darrell Brown's junior record sounds promising.
03:28Now the world watches as he trains to turn his dream into reality. Sergio Dufour, TV6 Sport.
