00:00Where I come from, books don't put food on the table.
00:02But books don't put food on the table here either.
00:05I do.
00:06Welcome to WatchMojo, and today, we're counting down art picks for our spooky favorites that may have slipped under the
00:13radar,
00:13but totally deserve a spot on your Netflix watch list.
00:17Number 10, Night Books.
00:19Seeing his old friend again makes Todd's heart hurt.
00:22I miss you.
00:23I don't want to let you go.
00:25But in death, Jenny discovered something that Todd is about to learn.
00:29Friends never let go, Todd.
00:31Imagine Goosebumps crossed over with scary stories to tell in the dark,
00:35and you could watch it from the comfort of your home with a Netflix subscription.
00:38How, then, are people still sleeping on Night Books?
00:40While it's definitely made with a slightly younger audience in mind,
00:43it's got plenty of genuine creepy moments up its sleeve.
00:46The apartment lured them in.
00:50That's what the apartment does.
00:54Those children, they were not useful to me.
00:58Especially if you go in expecting some softball horror flick.
01:01Like the franchises it lovely emulates, Night Books is spooky, whimsical, and all kinds of fun.
01:07If you haven't cracked open this story, here's your wake-up call.
01:10Huntsling Gretel was real.
01:15Yes.
01:17We're in Huntsville.
01:19It smells so delicious.
01:21Number 9, Cargo.
01:22Martin Freeman.
01:24In a horror movie.
01:25And he's giving off total disgruntled dad energy.
01:27Need we say more?
01:28You have to take her.
01:29What do you mean?
01:30You have to take her.
01:30What are you talking about?
01:31You have to take her.
01:32Blue, blue, stop.
01:34We will anyway.
01:35Cargo is a refreshingly character-driven slice of apocalyptic horror.
01:38Yes, there's the obligatory zombie outbreak and a whole lot of grisly special effects.
01:43But at its core, it's a story of a dad trying to keep his infant daughter safe in a world
01:47of peril.
01:47There'll be more.
01:49They would have heard that shot for miles.
01:52Better keep that baby quiet too.
01:54And you know zombies.
01:55Many wrote it off as yet another undead cash grab.
01:58But the family-focused narrative elevates Cargo into something special.
02:01If anything, it's worth checking out just to see Martin Freeman in one of his most criminally underrated performances.
02:07We can't go any further if you don't walk, okay?
02:09Do you understand me?
02:11Timmy, wake up.
02:12Wake up, darling.
02:14Are you gonna help me?
02:16Let's help each other, yeah?
02:18Number 8.
02:19Before I Wake
02:20Can I just stay here?
02:25I have to step out.
02:27Just for a minute.
02:28Why don't you put your head down and rest?
02:29You may not recognize this movie, and that's okay.
02:32If you like horror, you almost certainly know its writer-director Mike Flanagan.
02:36The visionary has become a fan-favorite on Netflix, delivering hit after spine-tingling hit
02:41like the fall of the House of Usher, Midnight Mass, and the Haunting of Hill House.
02:46We're all safe now.
02:48This is our forever house.
02:51It always was.
02:53Nothing bad will ever touch them ever again.
02:57Nothing good will either.
02:58If Before I Wake came out today, there's no doubt in our mind Flanagan's name will propel
03:03it to the top of the charts.
03:04It's got everything he's known for.
03:06Crazy twists, eerie set pieces, and an immaculate cast.
03:09For Flanagan fans, it's basically a central viewing.
03:12Thanks for bringing me home.
03:17Home.
03:18Number 7.
03:19Vampires vs. the Bronx
03:27This film doesn't leave much to the imagination, does it?
03:30As you probably surmised, the film features a bunch of ragtag teens defending their turf
03:34from a gang of lethal bloodsuckers.
03:36What sets Vampires vs. the Bronx apart is a razor-sharp comedic wit along with its, dare
03:41we say, biting critique on social issues in New York.
03:45You see, I'm just like you, Miguel.
03:47I don't want the Bronx to change.
03:50It's easier to live somewhere where no one cares when people disappear.
03:54I'm nothing like you.
03:55Considering this movie hit Netflix in the middle of a certain worldwide pandemic, there's
04:00a good chance you missed its release in all the noise.
04:03But trust us, whether you're itching for a laugh, a scare, or something in between,
04:07Vampires vs. the Bronx isn't one to miss.
04:09Let's make sure our people are having a good time, but we've got to stay on the lookout.
04:12Number 6.
04:13Don't Move
04:14Ticking clocks are one of the greatest ways to build tension.
04:17And Don't Move crafted its entire story around that idea.
04:20Shall we?
04:28Running is only going to make it work faster.
04:31Poor Iris is just minding her own business trying to process her grief when she meets
04:35a serial killer.
04:36Even worse, she's been injected with a slow-acting paralyzer, meaning her life's effectively on
04:41a timer.
04:41Can't move, can't talk, am I right?
04:48Are you hurt?
04:54Don't Move plays up the innate fear of not just being targeted by a killer, but being
04:59completely powerless to stop them.
05:00Combined with tight plotting and great performance, the movie is a total winner.
05:04So, despite the title, you're going to want to move fast on this one.
05:08If you didn't have this on today's bingo card, that's for sure.
05:11Number 5.
05:12Incantation
05:13Whatever you do, don't watch this alone with the lights off.
05:29We're serious.
05:30A Taiwanese horror thrill ride, Incantation is the kind of movie that's so unsettling,
05:34it makes you wonder whether it's even safe to watch it all the way through.
05:44By tying together folklore with grass-worth twists and a clever use of the found footage
05:49formula, it stays fresh and terrifying until the very end.
05:53We get it.
05:53There's no shortage of shaky cam horror movies to choose from these days, but Incantation
05:58is one of the few that really makes its format work.
06:01Plus, you'll probably be watching most of it through your fingers anyways.
06:13Number 4.
06:15Hellhole
06:24As a Polish-language film with little to no marketing in the US, it's not too surprising
06:29that this one didn't break any viewership records.
06:31It's a damn shame though, considering Hellhole is scary as all hell, pun partially intended.
06:36The setup seems familiar, with a cop following a missing person's case all the way to a sketchy
06:47Monastery.
06:48What you won't expect is its impressa VFX, edge-of-your-seat mystery, and compelling
06:53take on religious zealotry.
06:55If you give Hellhole a chance, it's guaranteed to leave you with something to think about.
06:59You'll also be scared out of your mind, but that should be a given.
07:12Number 3.
07:13Cam
07:13The worst thing we can say about this brilliant thriller is that it was a few years ahead of
07:18its time.
07:18What are you even saying?
07:20That she stole the password from my computer, found somebody who looks exactly like you,
07:26convinced them to buy your account all in one night?
07:28In 2018, a Cam girl facing untold horrors online may not have seemed very engaging.
07:34But now that AI deepfakes are a very real threat, seeing a lady of the night grapple with an evil
07:39doppelganger is chillingly relevant.
07:41You knew this was going to happen to me.
07:43Brought to life with a revelatory performance from Madeline Brewer, and Cam is a propulsive
07:48fright fest from start to end.
07:50A heads up though, after this, you'll want to tape over every camera lens in your house.
07:54I'm just going to have to go off Cam, and I'm going to do it without you.
07:58So, nobody wants that, right?
08:01Number 2.
08:02Tao
08:02Tao's a level 2 fully sentient AI console with natural language processing and transitory
08:07deterministic and probabilistic decision making.
08:10So, complicated cleaning system.
08:12Much like Cam, we can't help but feel this movie was just a bit too early to the AI craze
08:18of the 2020s.
08:19But even so, it's disappointing to learn how much people initially wrote it off.
08:23For one, it's star Micah Monroe, who is practically horror movie royalty at this point, in a refreshing
08:28change of pace.
08:29Her main obstacle isn't a ghost or demon or zombie.
08:32It's the artificial intelligence keeping her locked up at its owner behest.
08:35But you still obey them, because they created you?
08:40No.
08:42They gave me life.
08:45But I did the rest.
08:47However, her warden may also be her only hope to escape.
08:51Altogether, Tao's a fraught, eerie examination of our relationship to technology that's only
08:55growing better with age.
08:57I choose to be this.
09:00It is all that I am.
09:04It is for you.

09:22Number 1.
09:23The Call
09:31One of the best horror movies of the 2020s is Calling and You'd Better Answer.
09:36While the film's theatrical release was canceled due to the pandemic, there's no denying that
09:40Call is a theater caliber experience.
09:42The atmosphere, the performances, the bloody kills, it's all top tier.
09:56We don't want to give too much away, but its time-bending story manages to surprise you
10:01at every single turn.
10:02Maybe it would have made more waves if it'd actually come to theaters.
10:05But luckily, there's still a chance to check it out on Netflix.
10:08And suffice it to say, you won't be disappointed with the results.
10:24What's the best horror movie you've stumbled upon while watching Netflix?
