00:00Do you feel like you really started to push the boundaries of technology earlier?
00:03And do you think that helped you kind of advance in this career faster?
00:08Yeah, no, for sure.
00:09I think one of the things you have to do is, as you're young,
00:13and traditionally golf instruction has definitely been,
00:15you had gurus, you had like Butch, you had David Ledbetter, Chuck Cook, Jim McLean, Mike Adams.
00:22You had all these like amazing teachers and coaches.
00:25And in order to fast track yourself, you basically had to use technology to learn to figure things out.
00:34And obviously, those guys are really, really successful
00:36and probably were not embracing of technology as much as say younger people were.
00:41So the best thing about data is it's very objective.
00:44So you start to learn and understand what's actually happening.
00:47Obviously, 3D motion capture was a massive, massive thing because you started to see,
00:52okay, well, video is telling me one thing, but here's actually what's happening
00:56and here's the movements that are creating that.
00:58And then we got into ground reaction forces and obviously we had radar technology,
01:02launch monitors.
01:03And now we've got a very different sort of mindset on the ball flight laws.
01:09We start to understand, you know, a lot more club geometry.
01:12And then you throw all these things together and all of a sudden it's like, wow.
01:15And then you put in the emotional motor learning to all of these other pieces
01:20and you start to actually validate why some of these coaches have been so successful
01:25with certain players.
01:26Why are they struggled with other players?
01:28What are the soft skills that they're so good at?
01:31Like the, you know, getting people to do things.
01:33Why do people play well when they're in Butch Harmon's presence?
01:37What is it he does?
01:38He's an incredible motivator, you know, slash psychologist.
01:42That's his superpower.
01:43But that's what coaching is, right?
01:45So again, you start to, there's a lot of what people are incredible at,
01:51technology validates.
01:52Now, whilst a lot of people might be reluctant and, you know, push it away,
01:56when you start to explore, being curious, I think is really important
02:00in the learning field.
02:02All of a sudden you get all these disciplines, you get access to it
02:05and all of a sudden you can fast track.
02:07And I always say technology is for the student to expedite the learning curve.
02:12It validates and shows us things as the coach.
02:15But at the end of the day, you still have to be someone who has human interaction,
02:19right?
02:20Like the soft skills are still massively important,
02:22but technology allowed me to have a bigger understanding
02:27and a better understanding a lot more quickly.
02:29However, there's still no substitute for teaching people.
02:32And we all learn more from our mistakes than our successes.
02:35And obviously the guys that have been coaching for 40, 50 years,
02:39they've made lots of errors, but that's where they get their wisdom from.
02:42And so that's where, for a young guy, you had to use technology
02:47to be able to bypass, you know, some of that experience.
02:50There's no substitute for it, but you're trying to fast track.
02:53There's no substitute for it, but you have to use technology to participate.
