01:10i love having scotland it is genuinely one of my favorite places oh good oh yes jj's giving
01:17izzy the grand tour of his native soil today getting fully stuck into the local culture
01:23well we've already started the day right jj are you rocking up with a haggis roll for each of us
01:29you're very welcome well when in rome
01:34or motherwell in this instance this town came into its own during the industrial revolution thanks to
01:40his iron and steel works getting it the nickname steelopolis that's one of my favorites actually
01:47gordon i'd be even to be able to sing that i might try it tonight it's also the home of gordon who's
01:54getting moral support today from his karaoke pal sharon is that two the same well you must really like
02:01somebody but two the same this house was previously home to gordon's parents james and eliza i was close
02:11to both of them i always said my dad was my pal and my mum was basically if i could tell her anything
02:18it was a happy happy childhood my dad passed in 2009 and my mum didn't feel quite secure in the house
02:28herself so gordon moved in to look after her and keep her company just having somebody here i think
02:37made her more secure but five years later eliza's own health failed after my mum died
02:45i found it hard it was bad enough when my my dad passed when my mum went i basically lost my friend
02:54as well eliza sadly passed away in 2014 leaving gordon the house and a vast array of ornaments that
03:02she collected and cherished during her lifetime it's taken gordon this long to contemplate parting with them
03:08i felt as if i needed help just trying to sort everything out it's emotional to see it gone
03:16at the same time you say if it's stuck in the loft what's the point
03:24it feels very meaningful that we're going to help gordon because he went and cared for his mom and
03:30just want to help him sort of like now have the next chapter of his life do something for him yeah it
03:35feels like it's a fresh start in a new chapter and that's why our traveling team are stepping in to help
03:41jj do you reckon you can never get out the van without the old man i mean i'd love to say i'm
03:49putting on it's his age you know hello nice to meet you coming in please out of the heat
04:00this is my friend sharon hiya oh hiya hello nice to meet you so you're here to help yeah just
04:06give gordon some moral support we're keen to get stuck in feel free to go through the house especially
04:12up the attic because i've not been up there for a couple of years we'll go for it see you later
04:16enjoy the sunshine thank you chop chop you two there's no time to lose you've got three rooms
04:23downstairs and two bedrooms upstairs to get to grips with you look like my cup of tea not to mention that
04:30loft maybe i'll leave this one desi and while gordon's house isn't the biggest it is
04:36absolutely jam-packed with things to uncover there are boxes galore wow the video stuff
04:43whoa everywhere and they only have one day to get through it all
04:51oh that is a very sparkly cabinet and i like sparkles yes that's an awful lot of crystal ornaments
05:00oh yeah they are i was looking for the swan on the base that tells me they're swarovski
05:05and they're faceted in such a way and it's a lead crystal that it really sort of reflects the
05:10light refracts the light and you get this sort of dispersion of color and see the colors of the
05:15rainbow the company began in austria way back in 1895 when daniel swarovski invented the world's
05:23first electric crystal glass cutting machine this allowed the glass to be faceted with high precision
05:29for maximum sparkle i can see that gordon's mom was a huge collector and she'll have spent good
05:36money on these now unfortunately today's fashion isn't so much for ornaments people don't really
05:42collect them so these smaller pieces they're a pound a piece they're larger pieces three to five pounds
05:48a piece it's really the bigger pieces that have the big value that being said we have got here i
05:56mean there's so many probably two to three hundred pounds here in the cabinet but i would want to
06:02split them down into two or three lots and it would just be lovely to know that these are going to a
06:06home where they're going to be cherished and just enjoyment taken from them that's certainly a
06:12sizable haul to get the ball rolling this is a nice find but i'm going to keep looking and you're
06:19not alone oh that's nice our man jj is in full-on rummage mode too i like this under here euro
06:31oh that's nice i love this action on here these little struts pop out it's in good condition
06:40they have a dirty mark down the front which i suspect comes from this air freshener it's been
06:46leaking what is this it's made of the same material so i think it comes off of a foot or something
06:55it's basically just not ready for auction i think it's worth taking a proper look at hello mister oh
07:00hello you're doing some writing about to get started on my memoirs bureaus are not my favorite thing to sell
07:06okay because they're very out of fashion so they're a hard sell at the best of times
07:10this one looks to be i would have thought early 20th century i think i will struggle to get 20 to 30
07:19pounds but you're getting zero without it being exactly exactly you're saying give it every fighting
07:26chance it's got in that case it's time to get our mobile workshop up and running let's see what our
07:32man can do to save this from the scrap heap do you know i make a fortune selling ice creams today
07:39shame you've only got wood glue and varnish in there isn't it now what's the scoop with that bureau
07:45first things first this little fix this is missing off this leg around here that's a simple fix bit of
07:51glue and a clamp see this has had glue on it once upon a time and the glue's just kind of giving up the
07:57ghost so a rub down with sandpaper should get it ready to be glued again straight on just a bit of wood
08:04glue i'm trying to clamp this on a round surface i'm not gonna lie i might be testing
08:13every chance is going to want to slip around
08:18as i suspected the round orb nature of this is going to try my patience
08:24sounds like one of your little hacks might be needed jj take it off and try again a little bit
08:30of table salt believe it or not just put a little pinch of that on there by adding that bit of
08:38grittiness to the glue it stops the surfaces from slipping around while he clamps it fine table salt is
08:45what you want it can be himalayan it can be sea salt a bit fancy for furniture fixing jj
08:52that is drying it very quickly going to the heat today but while you wait for that what about the
08:59bureau's other issues this whole thing needs a cleanup especially this patch here where the air
09:05fresheners leak down over it so just a a non-corrosive cleaner back of a sponge should shift it without
09:12damaging the finish any just want to make sure i'm using plenty of this cleaner and it's not actually
09:20because it's cleaning it what it's doing is essentially lubricating it oh he's a stubborn
09:26one oh he's got his work cut out there we best leave him to it with boxes full of mum eliza's items
09:34all through the house gordon really needs our help to sort through everything
09:42especially as after holding on to them for so long he's finally ready to let them go
09:48it's got to be a bit lifted off my shoulders just to have it cleared out they were hers
09:54if you know what i mean at the same time they were only ornaments you know i'd rather have her
10:00and my dad back than the ornaments but life goes on you've just got to own that
10:09and after caring for his mum for many years that's just what gordon hopes to do
10:13any money i make at auction i'm hoping to put towards a special holiday for my 60th birthday
10:22which was earlier in the year i could basically say it's from my mum and my dad
10:27it's just like getting a present from them even though they're not here
10:30well to make that dream holiday a reality power is he needs to keep digging crisps
10:38crisps somebody likes crisps don't we all records yes two boxes full of vinyl lps
10:47now there's one thing to know about records those that have the potential to command good money are
10:541960s rock and pop onwards so led zeppelin the who the rolling stones and particularly if you've got
11:01the early albums now these are actually gordon's and he and sharon met over a shared love of karaoke
11:08so i've got whitney houston in here and wham madonna now unfortunately these aren't the sorts of records
11:14that are very collectible at auction but they make up for that with quantity so that 80s collection
11:21is going to get an estimate of 75 to 130 pounds and there are some bangers in there
11:28no boogieing for jj though he's still struggling with the stubborn stain on that bureau
11:34not quite shifting as well as i want i'm going to give it
11:37a light sanding and then i'm going to have to reapply finish it's going to look worse before it looks
11:46better but i have ultimate faith in you jj it's improved i might have to accept it's not going to be
11:53perfect hopefully spot a lacquer we'll just add that shine back onto it it should also add a layer of
12:00protection against future wear and tear right i reckon this can come off it's not been that long but
12:07going to the heat of today pretty solid pretty yeah he's happy a final buff up with shoe polish on
12:16the interior leather and this heirloom is good to go it's got a fighting chance at auction now
12:22and thanks to jj's hard work the estimate of 20 to 30 pounds is a little more achievable
12:31oh we got here this is an alabaster table and lamp now it's imitating marble alabaster is a softer
12:39material cheaper and more affordable this isn't an antique piece there's no great age to it you know
12:46within the last 50 years but it should be quite a bit whiter than it is it's very yellowed if i move
12:54the lamp you can see here where the lamp's been sat and there's the whiter mark underneath this could
13:00really do with some love and i can see as well that it's it's crumbling like it's got a very rougher
13:06texture than it should have and you can see it sort of like flaking on my fingers here a flaky find
13:11won't cut it at the auction but luckily we know just the man to fix it and jj's ready for his next
13:17project anyway oh that's a horrible sound jj it's going right through me what have we got here a
13:24little project this is part one of two what is this is this well alabaster alabaster very yellow but
13:33it's all flaking off i don't know if it's had a varnish or something on it does sort of feel as if
13:38there's been a finish on that as it is we can't send it to auction i mean it'll be in working order
13:43but it's just a bit ancient oh we rewire wouldn't hurt leave it with me okay first things first taking
13:49a brush to that flaky surface all right we'll give it a go
13:56yeah that's sort of shifting it that might look like i'm damaging the stone i'm not i'm just taking
14:03the finish off of it this is all probably hand carved and it's not like the most over elaborate
14:08design which is nice right that is the worst of it off off the top of the lamp anyway still got a
14:16table to do i think you're gonna need a bigger brush oh gordon's got this ladder down for me right here he goes
14:26oh i did not know what to expect up here looks like more boxes a lot more boxes oh it is hot up
14:35here though this is going to take some rummaging through now this looks like a camera bag
14:43oh okay zenith camera ah these look like binoculars so for the two cameras the binoculars
14:5120 pounds on a good day well better that than stuck in a loft any more oh shoes lovely these are
15:00probably all going to be shoes then aren't they you are not you are a games console do you know what
15:10there is a real resurgence in retro gaming in part driven by people of my generation a little bit older
15:19a little bit younger sort of harking back to that nostalgia of when they were children but also
15:25they're just great fun aren't they let's have a look nintendo 64. the must-have tech toy of the late
15:311990s although this japanese company started all the way back in 1889 manufacturing playing cards
15:41do you know what i don't know that this has actually been out of the box
15:43i mean that's all in there isn't it neat and tidy for this i would suggest at auction without any
15:52games that you would be looking at 30 to 50 pounds but if we get a couple of retro fans bidding it could
15:58be game on back out at the fan at the alabaster table is next to get the brush off right let me get rid
16:09of the all that dust next sorting out all that ancient wiring i'm going to get the innards out
16:15of this ready to replace them because if this lamp is going to sell at auction it needs to work and be
16:23safe hiya how you going on how are you sir yeah no bad trying to fix this lamp i can sell it's got a
16:29wee bit of age on it do you remember where you got it my mum brought that and the table from port of
16:36plenza really used to go every year yeah how did she get it back in her suitcase in her suit sorry on
16:43the plane yeah the table the base was in one suitcase and the top was in another talk about
16:50excess baggage what was your mum like small feisty and she was from this part of the world was she yeah
16:56yeah and obviously you know you really cared for her through the last years of her life how did you
17:00find that i always said when i was born she cared for me so in her latter years i cared for her full
17:09circle ah nice nice well listen i'm going to get this looking at its very best again i'll leave you
17:15to it just to go on mate indeed indeed you can sit and swelter with her i was going to say you go get
17:20yourself into the shade you should yeah thanks very much time to rewire this i'm going to snip this off
17:30that's it we're in no going back now jj treat myself some new cable
17:38new plug new switch new fitting let's get it all together it's not a novice job to work safely with
17:46electrics you need to know what you're doing but luckily jj's got the credentials used to literally
17:52teach kids how to do this at school when i was a design and technology teacher auction houses will
17:58only sell an electrical item if it's been properly tested so a potentially dangerous item can't be
18:04bought but jj knows what he's doing bulb back in see if it works and that lamp will be electrically
18:12tested before it goes under the hammer another bright idea for me eh don't congratulate yourself
18:22too soon there's still work to be done on those alabaster items and places still to search inside
18:29oh wow there really is stuff everywhere yes it's a bit of a challenge isn't it three lamps who needs
18:36one bedside lamp and you can have three now these look like ladro a spanish porcelain company renowned
18:42for their very recognizable pastel colored figurines and there seems to be a sizable amount of them it's
18:49a good collection and actually the fact it's all wrapped up here in boxes tells me that this isn't a
18:55love of gordon's this is a love of his mums and they're not being cherished and they're actually just
19:00taking up space in the bedroom now in terms of selling them on there are collectors out there for
19:06them and actually it's a really good collection here izzy's going to combine some of the most
19:11saleable pieces into one lot with an auction estimate of 80 to 100 pounds and she's not finished
19:18with this room yet got a pendant necklace here with sapphires and it's stamped 375 so nine carat gold
19:25and then let's have a look at these earrings also stamped 375 with deeny tiny diamonds i would
19:33suggest a guide of 80 to 120 pounds on these two another good find for the auction list right i need
19:41to keep looking hello oh how are you well i'm having a good search through all of gordon's items
19:49he's got a lot hasn't he oh loads is this quite a big deal for him to do this i think now it's not
19:57i think before it was it's got a lot of memories and things but i think now he's getting older
20:02and he just feels that he wants to move on rather than anything happens to him and somebody else is
20:07moving on yeah how long have you two been friends for 13 14 years as i love the person
20:12it'll do anything for you anytime i've got a problem i phone him everyone needs a friend like that
20:17uh-huh well i'm going to keep going then there's a lot to do here okay now we'll see what gordon's
20:22up to keep him out of trouble yep as always thank you see you later yes there are a lot more boxes to
20:30battle through but we do have quite a haul so far there's the myriad of crystal ornaments belonging to
20:37gordon's mum a games console rescued from the loft boxes full of vinyl records and more discoveries
20:46like a signed motherwell fc football just sitting in the shed i would hope that we can get at least
20:5220 to 30 pounds for this and jj's worked his magic on an edwardian bureau but to get gordon off on his
21:0060th birthday holiday courtesy of mum and dad we're gonna need more like that alabaster table and lamp
21:08brushed down rewired and ready for the next step i am delighted with how they are looking most of that
21:14yellowing actually came from the finish itself and now that's off it's exposing the original color
21:20of it quite nicely having said that there's still a marked difference in some of the spots here
21:26so i'm going to try and apply something to take some of the staining out of it alabaster is water
21:33soluble so if you try and clean it with water it'll actually erode it so you need to use something
21:39that is water free and that's exactly what petroleum jelly is
21:46i'm going to work it in leave it on for a while and then buff it off and see what happens
21:53and this is exactly why you should never throw your old toothbrushes away
21:57very handy for working that goo into all the nooks and crannies
22:01right they're coated up nicely but i'll just put this stuff over to one side for about an hour i reckon
22:07let it work it's magic and then i'll get it cleaned up and while jj waits for that he's off to find
22:13something else to fix i love these tables looks like those might be another potential project
22:22my mum and dad had a set of these when i was growing up well look how cool this is
22:28it's a nest of tables but these come out this is so fun there you go it's a cool little design
22:36really practical and it's an all right condition as ever there's a bit of damage on the top of the main
22:43one the tables a bit of a chip on the veneer but i think with its age it's actually kind of come around
22:52again and it's just a nice compact little number right look at this i'm gonna wheel it away
22:57like an air steward you'd better fly these past the captain before you get fixing i think i can
23:06hear a jj on his way hello tea coffee oh coffee please tables is what i've got for you a nest of
23:14look at this my mum and dad had a set of these when i was a kid and i always oh it's so wee
23:19don't need to do the honors a wee twist there there we go now nostalgia alert here we used to
23:26have our like dinner on a saturday night in front of the telly picky bits dinner do you know what i
23:31like about this jj is it's still really usable and you get four well you get five tables don't you
23:36really because you've got this one but it's so compact they are still going to be quite a tricky
23:40sell even in pristine condition which they will be which they will be but there's not an obscene
23:46amount of work in it so it's worth the effort yeah i i think so right pack it up with the green light
23:51given happy days i'll leave you to it let's get those out to the van for a spruce up while izzy heads
23:59back up to the bedrooms okay boxes on the bed by the bed oh yes so many boxes oh that's beautiful
24:08isn't it these fish are part of the wonders of the sea collection looks like you found those higher
24:14value crystal ornaments that you were after izzy now second hand the pieces in the uk don't sell
24:21as well just because it's not fashionable anymore to have ornaments however america are a big fan and
24:28they buy many of these types of ornaments so it wouldn't surprise me if we get some american buyers
24:33interested in this collection and there's no small amount of it
24:37oh he's nice isn't he a tiger part of an endangered wildlife set a stripy tiger gordon's mum was
24:48definitely bitten by the bug wasn't she okay wow even the boxes are getting more extravagant this is the peacock
24:56oh wow look at that i mean even if you're not a fan you can appreciate the beauty of that peacock
25:09showing off his tail feathers there is a lot here isn't there hey gordon yeah well i found your mum's
25:16crystal collection yeah she loved it i think it was the sparkle and stuff like that because when the sun
25:22shines on it it basically gives like a kind of rainbow effect and was she part of a collector's
25:27club yeah you used to put your name forward to see if you'd be selected and if you were selected
25:34you'd opportunity to buy them right are you happy for jj and i to sell your collection yeah yeah it was
25:40just so much it you couldn't display it all yeah that's nice stuff that needs to be displayed your mum
25:48would want it displayed wouldn't she yeah definitely izzy's looking at an estimate of 70 to 100 pounds
25:53for the fish the tiger gets bundled in with the rest of the range at 80 to 130 pounds and then two to
26:01300 for the peacock but there's so much more of mum's collection to sell as well for the entire collection
26:09everything here everything downstairs i really do reckon you could be into four figures and looking at
26:14another thousand pounds that would certainly help towards gordon's 60th celebration well i promised
26:20you my help today so i'm going to keep looking i'll let you go on met thanks very much okay
26:28i love this set of tables but if they're going to make money we need to make sure they're looking their
26:33very best so i reckon the top of this one is going to need stripped fully and we'll start again with its
26:38finish but the other ones i should be able to just do little spot repairs on the little bits of damage
26:45to the veneer but first let's get sanding jj's using an extractor for the dust so no need for a mask
26:52i'm going to go with a really fine grade of sandpaper yes careful you don't go through the veneer jj
26:58that is looking really nice obviously all the marks are gone i think a few coats of oil will give it
27:08the correct color yeah at the end of the day it might just be a veneer but it is a hardwood veneer
27:16you really want that wood to speak for itself i think and as well as bringing out the grain the
27:24wood oil also gives some protection happy with that and with a large table out in the sun to dry
27:30time to tackle the small ones okay let's start taking a look at these this is a perfect example
27:37of that really thin veneer why you've got to be cautious with it looks like it's had the odd knock
27:43over the years luckily our van holds a few spare bits for just this sort of thing you can see just
27:50how thin it is a fraction of a millimeter is all you've got hence why you don't want to sand through
27:57it i'll be able to pop that on there a bit of glue finish up and you'll never see it cutting it to the
28:06rough shape and size but i'm just going to make it a wee bit bigger that's pretty good let's just take a
28:12bit of super glue and then i'll do my best to not stick my fingers to it hmm that would be a problem
28:20oh panic over i'm just going to remove some of the excess with a knife
28:27so just taking that tiny last bit off then just a touch of furniture oil to blend it into the existing
28:33veneer that's pretty good that will lighten as well once the oil penetrates down into it
28:39and you'll never know that was there satisfying we fix and it also means izzy can give it an estimate
28:46of 20 to 30 pounds look at that ready for another tv dinner and ready for the auction
28:54but with the day drawing to an end more clothes towel everyone needs a towel cupboard we could
29:07still do with finding a high value item or two time to dig deep izzy loads oh oh this goes oh this is
29:17like narnia this goes all the way back you're only meant to search the bedroom hello hello hello did you
29:25hear the echo hmm silly billy back to reality eh however it has drawn my eye down to this this has izzy
29:35barma written all over it a jewelry box but does it contain izzy barma's favorite things i can see
29:43we've got some gold so we've got a nice nine carat gold bracelet here all these nine carat gold earrings
29:51that says 375 so 375 tells me it's nine carat because that's 375 parts out of a thousand of gold
30:03this one says 375 it also says gran on it hmm they're either going to be diamonds white sapphires
30:12i don't think they're cubic zirconius just because they're not quite sparkly enough there is a lot
30:18of jewelry here all these lactuses these lactuses are gold as well gold rings this is good i was not
30:26expecting to find this here in the bottom of the cupboard all of this belonged to gordon's auntie
30:31whose house he cleared after she died for the gold i would spit it down into various lots but collectively
30:38for all of it it's easily 1200 to 1800 pounds that's more like the figures we were hoping for
30:46izzy will give a value of 120 to 160 pounds on the bracelet a group of three coin rings will be
30:53valued at 130 to 170 pounds plus that blingy bangle which could make 170 to 220 pounds and a lot more
31:04besides that's going to really help gordon get his special trip and that's time up on a very productive
31:10day from a box full of bling to a cracking crystal collection izzy has come up with the goods and jj's
31:18handiwork will add value too once he's got the petroleum jelly off the alabaster cleaning up
31:24nicely those nice white shades are returning oh that lovely that it's ready for auction
31:32izzy's given the lamp and table an estimate of 40 to 60 pounds and relax i've had a wonderful day
31:40gordon you're still smiling yeah as always always smiling well we're still smiling as well but

32:03it's been six weeks since our grand clear out at gordon's house and our intrepid twosome are in
32:09scotland again on their way to the town of peoples this historic royal borough was birthplace to william
32:16and robert chambers publishers of amongst other things the chambers english dictionary and the
32:22very definition of charm and sophistication izzy and jj have arrived you've got a busy day today i do
32:31all the jewelry can be here a while aren't we i'll bring you cups of tea the kindly folk at the people's
32:37auction house have given us the run of the place today in this former old school building now what i
32:43want to be really careful of jj is that this glass cabinet well yes and all the crystal oh yes don't
32:49want to barge into that with this oh that gonna work for you i reckon so and that looks pretty decent
32:56jj yeah russian's all right too and here bright and early to bag the best spot gordon and his pal sharon
33:06there are 48 items in the auction today many the prized collections of gordon's late mum eliza
33:13there's one particular piece that jj is keen to show off all right how you doing very well you
33:19looking forward to this aye lightened out experience okay i've got your alabaster under here do you want
33:25to see it i have any mind god that's amazing job isn't it so it's all had a good cleanup and then the
33:31lamps have been rewired as well yeah how do you think he's been getting on i've been going fine just
33:36a bit sad well the thing's going to wear it enough haven't you definitely well listen i'm going to get this
33:41stuff through and into pride of place uh if you guys just go and make yourself comfy for a minute
33:45okay no problem thanks let's hope that all of gordon's items come up trumps with our bidders
33:51to fund that special trip for his 60th but which of mum eliza's items does izzy think will sparkle in
33:58the sale doesn't that peacock look fantastic with all the tail feathers splayed out i think today might be
34:05quite hard for gordon selling his mum's items and particularly when we get to her passion to a
34:10collector this is the pièce de résistance it's a piece that they're really going to want to have in
34:15their collection so i just hope that they're out there today bidding against each other i'm going to
34:19be crossing my fingers that we can fly the flag for gordon's mum and really do well with this peacock
34:25some of those collectors may well be browsing the wares already as our sale room starts to fill up
34:31and for online bids from around the world we have christopher on hand to help come make yourselves
34:36comfy oh easy i'll be here in a second tonight with the best seats in the house for our guests of honor
34:45let's hope gordon's mum's treasures go to new homes to be cherished once again and i think we're just

35:00and sharon so we are selling gordon's mum's items who sadly passed away he is hoping to go on a belated
35:09trip for a big birthday that he celebrated recently so that's why we're here today to get this party
35:15started let's go back to the 80s with gordon's lp collection 30 is bid 32 35 in the room 38 40 bid
35:26at 40 and 2 45 thank you sir we've got a battle between the room and the internet for the number
