Building Outside The Lines - Season 3 Episode 2 - Historic Granary Becomes A Goat Milk Goods Haven
Transcript
00:00Hey, guys.
00:01Well, hey, guys.
00:02I need their help to expand.
00:04So this is just like a one-stop shop for everything goat.
00:07Yes.
00:10There's a building on the outside of town.
00:12It was a granary.
00:13Dude, yeah, that's perfect.
00:15This is big.
00:17In order to make it movable,
00:19we had to take the lid off of the building.
00:23Hold up!
00:24We're stuck on something.
00:25Good Lord, this thing is wide.
00:27My rear wheels are barely touching the ground.
00:30I don't like this.
00:35That is bananas.
00:37In three, two, one.
00:40Oh, my God.
00:43My given name is Jared Cappy.
00:46But everyone calls me Cappy.
00:48This is probably one of the coolest things I've ever done.
00:50Everyone clear?
00:51I've been a professional builder for over 15 years.
00:55Woo-hoo!
00:56But a few years ago, I teamed up with my daughter, Alex.
00:59Whoa.
01:00It looks so good in here.
01:02We specialize in transforming unconventional objects.
01:05Whoa!
01:06I'm awake now.
01:08What if we did use a plane?
01:09Wait, really?
01:10All right, Alex.
01:11She's all yours.
01:13Into one-of-a-kind creations.
01:15Oh, my God.
01:16It's so amazing.
01:18And we get to do it for our favorite people.
01:20Love you, man.
01:21I love you.
01:22Oh, my God.
01:23I love you.
01:24But the best part...
01:25Is we get to do it together.
01:28Hey, kid.
01:29Where are we off to today?
01:30Okay.
01:31So I found this really awesome lady.
01:32She's so cool.
01:33She has a stand at the farmer's market.
01:35But her main thing is goats.
01:36She makes, like, goats.
01:37So, goat.
01:38Candles.
01:39Goat everything.
01:40What's her name?
01:41Her name is Shelby Lunn.
01:42And she's like...
01:43We went to high school together.
01:44Really?
01:45True story.
01:46Yeah, she's so cool.
01:47And she seems so nice.
01:48Yeah, Shelby's great.
01:49And she mentioned how she needs some sort of expansion on the farm.
01:52Like, she has a workshop.
01:53And she has a workshop.
01:54And she's like...
01:55And she's like...
01:56And she's like...
01:57And she's like...
01:58And she's like...
01:59And she's like...
02:00True story.
02:01Yeah, she's so cool.
02:02And she seems so nice.
02:03Yeah, Shelby's great.
02:04And she mentioned how she needs some sort of expansion on the farm.
02:09Like, she has a workshop.
02:10And it's in her garage.
02:11Okay.
02:12And it's just as the business is growing, the space isn't growing with her.
02:16She needs a designated space that's separate from her home.
02:20Yeah, I hear that.
02:27Oh, my gosh.
02:28This is awesome.
02:29Oh, hey, guys.
02:30Hi.
02:31How's it going?
02:32Hi.
02:33Hi, darling.
02:34Oh, my goodness.
02:35This is awesome.
02:36It's so pretty.
02:37Do you just like wake up one morning with your coffee and be like, oh.
02:38We are living the dream.
02:39Yes.
02:40We have two boys.
02:41Odin is 13.
02:42Ulrich is 11.
02:43And this is our farm.
02:44And this is my La Mancha Norma.
02:46I can get about a gallon of milk.
02:47And this is our farm.
02:48And this is my La Mancha Norma.
02:50I can get about a gallon of milk.
02:51And this is our farm.
02:52And this is my La Mancha Norma.
02:55And this is my La Mancha Norma.
02:57I can get about a gallon of milk from her a day.
03:00What?
03:01Holy comeole.
03:02Yeah.
03:03She's a good milker.
03:04Your goat products sound amazing.
03:05Just from the sustainability piece of it is like as farm to table as you can get, right?
03:09Yeah.
03:10It's all natural.
03:11It's all made by my hand.
03:12Yeah.
03:13So how long have you actually had the farm?
03:15We bought the property in 2016.
03:17Okay.
03:18And it wasn't a farm.
03:19It was just the house.
03:20Once we got out here and saw it, it was too good not to take.
03:24Yeah.
03:25Packed up the family and moved them out here.
03:28Moved out here.
03:29I was doing real estate then.
03:32And 2019, my dad was diagnosed with stage four cancer.
03:36Oh, wow.
03:37So, yeah.
03:39Going through that really made me want to change my life.
03:44Something that just always resonated with me is my dad always lived in the moment.
03:52So, I knew I wanted to do what I wanted.
03:58So then we started getting goats and started building the farm.
04:01Okay.
04:02And so that's where I started to make the goat products.
04:05Alex said you guys talked about you wanting to expand.
04:08I'm really needing to expand my workshop.
04:11We're here to have Cappy and Alex help us with a new building.
04:18Where I make all my skin products is just too small.
04:23And I need their help to expand.
04:26So, this is a big place.
04:27What are you thinking?
04:28Well, we're kind of thinking over in that area.
04:31Like the way you come in?
04:32Yeah.
04:33Okay.
04:34So, if we want to walk over there, I can show that to you guys.
04:36Yeah.
04:37I also need somewhere to showcase all my products.
04:42You know, I get calls all the time of people wanting to come pick it up here.
04:45They come to my shop and it's kind of embarrassing because it's just a mess in there.
04:50So, how many kinds of animals do you have?
04:52Well, we have around seven to eight different animals.
04:56Ducks.
04:57Chickens.
04:58Horses.
04:59Goats.
05:00A donkey named Gus.
05:01There's a donkey?
05:02There's a miniature donkey.
05:03Oh, yeah.
05:04A donkey named Gus.
05:05No way.
05:06He is so fun.
05:07Awesome.
05:08And then here's kind of where I guess we're thinking of having the building put.
05:14So, this is just like a one-stop shop for everything goats, right?
05:18Yes.
05:19And also storage.
05:20Okay.
05:21Like my soaps are quite the process.
05:23It takes about eight weeks to make just one bar.
05:25Oh, wow.
05:26Because the way I do it is hundreds of years old.
05:28Wow.
05:29And so, I need a lot of space for them to sit and cure.
05:32Do they need to be in a cold space, in a warm space?
05:36Room temperature to a little bit cooler would be perfect.
05:39Now, in terms of like style, what do you like?
05:42Definitely, I love the French country look.
05:45Okay.
05:46Like a lot of exposed wood.
05:47Yeah.
05:48And I love antiques anyway.
05:49I love the history.
05:50Gosh, you got all the questions, kid.
05:51Yeah.
05:52I don't know if I have any.
05:53I mean, I think I'm good because I have all sorts of ideas.
05:55Awesome.
05:56We'll go back and talk about the plan.
05:58Love it.
05:59Okay.
06:00Love it.
06:02So excited to have you go.
06:03Thanks, Cap.
06:04You bet.
06:05Well, that was super fun.
06:11Oh, my gosh.
06:12So much fun.
06:13When we were hearing about all the things that she works with, it really sounds like we're
06:17almost making like an apothecary, like somewhere that sells natural products.
06:22Right?
06:23I like that.
06:24The goat apothecary.
06:25In terms of structure, obviously, we love to repurpose things.
06:29Well, I thought of it while she was talking.
06:32There was a farm on the outside of town.
06:34There's a building that still sits there.
06:36It's got like a rusty silver tin roof.
06:38Dude, yeah, that's perfect.
06:40Yeah.
06:41What I like about it is let's start the project with something that's antique.
06:44Yeah.
06:45So I know the guy who owns it.
06:47I can give him a call.
06:48Yeah, 100%.
06:53Hey there.
06:54How's it going, boss?
06:55Good.
06:56Sprout and I, we just left a client's house.
06:58And we're trying to figure out some sort of workshop slash retail space.
07:04Awesome.
07:05You guys have that little white building.
07:07That was from the old Meyers property.
07:11Old, old settlers in the area.
07:14And when we bought that property, everything got torn down.
07:18Except that little greenery building.
07:21Gosh, if you have somebody that would love it and use it, we'd sure be open to that.
07:26Rick, would you be open to Sprout and I popping in and taking a look at it?
07:30That would be great.
07:31Thanks, partner.
07:32Appreciate it.
07:33Have an awesome day.
07:34Bye-bye.
07:35You want to pop by and check it out on the way home?
07:36Heck yeah.
07:37Cool.
07:38There she is.
07:39There she is.
07:40This is big.
07:41I like the size of it.
07:42This siding has seen much better days.
07:55Yeah, this wood definitely needs to go.
07:57What do you think?
07:59It's about to be turn of the century.
08:00I bet it's early 1900s.
08:02Yeah.
08:03So Rick said it was a granary.
08:05Can you imagine you grew grain and then had a dedicated building to store it to feed your
08:10animals for the rest of the year?
08:11Crazy.
08:12We just go to the mill and buy big sacks of it and they give it to us.
08:16Ooh.
08:18Looks pretty solid.
08:20Oh, I think all the walls got to go on the inside.
08:23Mm-hmm.
08:24I would like to salvage the wood though.
08:25It's good.
08:26Like...
08:27Mm-hmm.
08:28I'd keep the walls in place while it's moved so the structure holds together.
08:33Well, what do you think?
08:36I really like it.
08:37I definitely want to redo the doors and windows just because a French cottage is very light,
08:42it's very airy.
08:43Awesome.
08:44Our plan for Shelby's dream workspace is to transform this antique granary into a unique
08:51one-stop shop for all things goat.
08:54First, we'll move the structure to Shelby's farm, then swap out the old exterior siding
08:59and remove the interior walls to make the building feel bright and welcoming.
09:03We'll give Shelby space to both craft her handmade products and showcase them in style.
09:08A boiler will keep the temperature consistent over long South Dakota winters and will create
09:13an eye-catching sign to draw folks in.
09:16The challenge is going to be moving the old granary all the way to Shelby's farm without
09:20damaging it, and then making sure the final space checks all the boxes on Shelby's wishlist.
09:26And then I think the next question is, how do we move it?
09:31It's really tall.
09:32Let me think about that.
09:34I don't know the legal height limit on the freeway, but I'm pretty sure this exceeds it.
09:38It's under this height.
09:41Before we can give the granary a new home, we've got to make sure there's a rock-solid
09:46place to plant it.
09:47And that starts with a new foundation.
09:50First step, Tanner's digging out the footprint.
09:53Next, some of Shelby's friends help lay out the concrete forms.
09:56We're including a crawl space for pipes and wiring and a bonus area out back.
10:01It'll be perfect for an outdoor deck, but even better if Shelby decides to expand her growing
10:06business down the line.
10:08We're pouring our concrete into insulated concrete forms that'll provide a proper frost-protected
10:15foundation.
10:17Finally, the site is ready for the granary.
10:20But now comes the tricky part, actually getting the granary to the site.
10:24The challenge is, the building itself is 18 feet tall.
10:28By the time I put it on my three-foot-tall trailer, I can't drive down the road with that.
10:33It'll put me about seven feet over the legal height limit of 14 feet.
10:38So, in order to make it moveable, we're cutting off every nail that holds the roof down.
10:47And today, we're gonna pick the roof off of the building and transport each section on two different
10:54trailers.
10:55Good as new.
10:56The next step is its journey west.
10:58We're hauling this wide load 11 miles.
11:01First down a section of interstate, and then down a bumpy country road.
11:06So, we made these custom plates that bolt to the building.
11:13And this hole, or this picking eye on this custom bracket, is gonna allow the chain to
11:18come up past this.
11:20We don't wanna damage the roof or any of the roof structure.
11:23So, we have to pick this outboard of the roof.
11:27I also fabricated a beam that extends over the length of the roof, and welded mounts to
11:34it for chains that attach to the roof brackets.
11:41Cappy, I reckon this roof weighs about 6,000 pounds.
11:48Last time we picked something that was heavy, your welds didn't pull.
11:54Well, that's not ideal.
11:56It's gonna be fine.
11:59I bet you a super burrito manadero that my welds hold.
12:04Yeah, with everything.
12:06Yeah, yeah, but that means when they hold, you have to buy me the same thing.
12:09Uh-huh.
12:10All right.
12:12Get one weld.
12:14Drop a big tank.
12:15Man.
12:16You're on that corner, I'm on this corner.
12:19Okay.
12:20Going up.
12:22All jokes aside.
12:23Watch those plates.
12:25If we drop this old granary, it won't bounce.
12:28It'll bust open like a sad pile of rustic firewood.
12:31It's gonna go out a little bit.
12:34And now that the pressure's really on, it's time to raise the roof.
12:41Oh.
12:42Oh.
12:43Oh.
12:44Oh.
12:45Oh.
12:46Oh.
12:47Hold up.
12:48We're stuck on something.
12:49Hold up.
12:50We're stuck on something.
12:51Hold up.
12:52Hold up.
12:53We're stuck on something.
13:02Hold up.
13:06Looks like we're hung up on the front.
13:07And I got a board on the inside connected to the rafters.
13:17That much tension could break my weld, but at this point, I gotta go for it.
13:22I think if you keep pulling straight up, it'll come loose.
13:33I'm clear.
13:34I'm up.
13:35I'm clear.
13:36Nice job, boys.
13:40Go ahead and start backing up nice and easy.
13:43Good lord, this thing is wide.
13:58Oh, let's go down real easy.
13:59Down?
14:00Down.
14:07Okay.
14:10That went awesome.
14:11What do you know?
14:12Looks like my weld's held up.
14:14And Dustin owes me a burrito.
14:18Okay.
14:22The next step for us is to pick the actual building up.
14:27So in order to do that, it's so wide and heavy, I bet it's close to 10,000 pounds.
14:34We're using two telehandlers to pick it up.
14:37And the margin for error here is razor thin.
14:41Whoa!
14:43You're gonna roll that way, you're gonna roll that way.
14:46If the machines aren't synced perfectly, if the weight shifts unevenly, that means splintering timbers, warped walls, or a building that'll never sit square again.
14:55How does it look?
14:57I look pretty good.
14:58Okay.
15:03Now we'll back in my trailer and turn this building into a temporary mobile home.
15:09Am I close?
15:10You're close.
15:14Touchdown!
15:16All right.
15:18So we should be just under our legal height.
15:21We're allowed 14.
15:24We're 12'8".
15:25We're gonna be real careful, go nice and slow.
15:27But she's stable, and we'll get her strapped down, and we're gonna head up the road.
15:30Eleven miles doesn't seem far, but when you're hauling a historic, century-old structure that you've just sliced in half to the edge of the Wyoming border, you have to take things slow.
15:49How you feeling, Dustin?
15:52Really wide.
15:54Copy that.
15:55Yeah, we'll just ride the right lane the best we can, and just take her easy.
16:03Thank goodness I'm not on granary moving day.
16:06That sounds really stressful.
16:08Instead, I'm focusing on the design features that'll help make Shelby's business stand out.
16:13I'm meeting with Tim, a local sign maker.
16:15I drive by a lot of Tim's signs every day.
16:20He would be the perfect person to make it for her, because he makes everything in-house, and is local, and loves to do stuff around town, and that's exactly what she does.
16:36Hi.
16:37Hello.
16:38We spoke a little bit on the phone in regards to my client, Shelby Lund.
16:41We're making her a workshop and a storefront on her farm in order for her to sell soaps and candles and all sorts of things out of the milk from her goats.
16:53So, what name will appear on the sign?
16:56Lund Valley Farm.
16:58So, this is her current standing logo.
17:00Okay.
17:02Would you be interested in partaking in the production process?
17:04Absolutely, yes.
17:05I do paint, but I've never done something on this scale, so I'd love to learn something.
17:09That's good.
17:10Excellent.
17:11Lovely.
17:12All right.
17:13I think that's all I need to know.
17:14Okay.
17:15So, you'll hear from me soon.
17:17Bye.
17:18His shop is so cool.
17:19So, we made it off the interstate.
17:20I'm glad that portion is done, but now we're on the dirt road on the way to Shelby's house.
17:38Try not to take out any mailboxes either.
17:40Come right a little bit with the wheels.
17:51Slow is smooth.
17:52Smooth is fast.
17:54We're approaching Shelby's farm.
17:58Stop it right here, fellas.
18:02The next challenge is threading this wide load through Shelby's gate without damaging the gate or the granaries.
18:08So, we're right at 19 wide.
18:13I'm 18 wide.
18:15Okay, so I'm 16, but we need to get the angle of our turn just right.
18:20If we come in too steep or too shallow, we're going to do some damage.
18:24The two things we're going to want to watch is this communications box right on the corner and the birdhouses.
18:29Those are her father made those birdhouses.
18:31Let's do it.
18:34Here I go.
18:36How's my front tire?
18:37I can go more.
18:40Okay, now.
18:41Now turn it.
18:44It's tight.
18:48All right, buddy.
18:49You made it to the gate.
18:51That was the easy part.
18:53Now comes the nail binder.
18:55I'm a little tighter than that.
18:57I think you are going to be tighter than that.
18:59The roof is two feet wider, so if Dustin drifts even a little bit, we might be in for some unplanned renovations.
19:08Hard left.
19:09Oh, you got to go that way a bunch.
19:15Yeah, I'm going to hit.
19:17Yeah, you're going to hit me.
19:18You can come this way a little bit.
19:19Go real slow.
19:20Real, real slow.
19:21Just look at this.
19:22This is how much space he's got.
19:24I'm good.
19:25I'm clear on my side.
19:27Well done, boys.
19:29Dude, six.
19:30Oh, I had six on my side.
19:33That's amazing.
19:34We made it through.
19:35Nothing touched.
19:36No bird houses, no gates, anything.
19:38Let's get it on the foundation.
19:42We have to pick up the building.
19:44All right.
19:45How much space he's got.
19:47This is how much space he's got.
19:49I'm good.
19:50I'm clear on my side.
19:52Well done, boys.
19:54I had six on my side.
19:55That's amazing.
19:56We made it through.
19:57Nothing touched.
19:58No bird houses.
19:59No gates.
20:00We have to pick up the building.
20:02I have to pull the trailer out from underneath it.
20:05And Ruby has to extend while Dustin retracts
20:10and moves the building over and sets it down.
20:21Why don't you put a little pressure on it?
20:27So it's right at your tipping weight.
20:30I was watching your tires.
20:32I thought so.
20:33So we'll be real careful with that.
20:35This makes me nervous.
20:38My rear wheels are barely touching the ground right now.
20:41Because when you're boomed out this far with 10,000 pounds,
20:45you can teeter easy.
20:48If the telehandler tips, not only will the granary get smashed,
20:53we'll also crack the foundation it's sitting on
20:56and put the telehandler boom out of commission.
20:58Tipping is not encouraged.
21:00I don't like this.
21:05OK, Ruby, you drive forward, and Dustin, start retracting.
21:14OK, let's lower it.
21:16OK, both at the same time.
21:19I wish I can tell you that she drops right into place.
21:22But the reality is it goes something like this.
21:24So I got to go this way eight inches.
21:26OK, why don't you back out.
21:28Go ahead and go up.
21:29So you're going to retract, and you're going to extend.
21:31We're really close.
21:32So that way.
21:32And then you flop to that corner.
21:33OK, you go down.
21:34That's a lot of mental gymnastics today.
21:35I'm going to have you come to this corner.
21:37So close.
21:38You're going to bump to that corner.
21:40Stand by.
21:41Brain hurts.
21:41Right?
21:42No problem.
21:43OK, retract.
21:44It's beautiful, boy.
21:45It's beautiful.
21:46And just like that, 100-year-old building, brand new home.
21:52So the last piece of this puzzle is putting the lid back on our pot.
21:59But this is definitely a heavy, heavy lid.
22:03Daddy, this is really hard to line up, because it has to be square to the building and front
22:11and back, left and right.
22:13It's hard when everyone's tired.
22:14We've been up since 4 this morning.
22:15Just watch your fingers and your head.
22:17It's a big day.
22:19All right, we're down.
22:23Yosifo, nice driving, amigo.
22:26So big day yesterday.
22:40We got the apothecary all the way down to Shelby's farm.
22:43Today, we're kicking off the renovation, starting with stripping off the old exterior siding.
22:48100-plus years of South Dakota weather have really taken its toll.
22:52We're also removing the inside walls, but luckily, that wood's in good shape.
22:55And Sprout wants to save it for Shelby.
22:58I'm just excited that we can take this piece of history that has been around Spearfish
23:02for so long and repurpose it into this thing for Shelby and Derek.
23:06Turns out, I'm not the only one who had an eye for this old granary.
23:09Some neighbors are just as fired up about saving the slice of history than showed up
23:14to lend a hand.
23:15Morning, fellas.
23:17Clark and Jackson, thanks for coming.
23:18So we're going to go ahead and strip all the exterior siding off.
23:21Alex did want us to save two good boards from the outside for a project
23:25she's working on for Shelby.
23:26The inside, however, we want to repurpose all that big, fat one-by into some shelves
23:32for Shelby's stuff.
23:33I'm going to go get some tools.
23:34All right.
23:41It's easy.
23:46Oh, this is going to be easier.
23:49We're going to be done by noon.
23:51You know, we grew up across the creek in Spearfish from this building, so it's really nice to
23:58be able to help Cappy Sprout give this another life.
24:02Very cool.
24:04While Dustin and David tackle the inside walls, Sprout checks on the condition of the boards
24:11and finds a surprise.
24:13Oh, my gosh.
24:14There's writing on here.
24:151906.
24:16So this board is over, like, 120 years old.
24:20Wow.
24:21It doesn't look like much now, but I can see the goat apothecary is shaping up to be something
24:33really special.
24:35Just give me a few more days.
24:42I've got an idea to make this build extra special for Shelby, but I need Derek's help.
24:54Hello.
24:55Hey, Alex.
24:56How are you?
24:57Doing good.
24:58How are you?
24:59Good.
25:00I was just wondering if I could get some pictures from you of Shelby and her dad.
25:03I'm hoping that I can sneak them in the project somewhere.
25:06Absolutely.
25:07Yeah.
25:08We have a ton of them I could round up.
25:10She'd love that.
25:11That'd be great.
25:12Awesome.
25:13Well, I don't want her to see me, so I should jet.
25:15All right.
25:16Cool.
25:17Thanks, Alex.
25:18I'm at the sign shop with Tim, and he has one more step that he wants some help with,
25:31so I'm excited to learn something new.
25:34Hello.
25:35Hi, Alex.
25:38Oh.
25:39Is this our sign?
25:40Here it is.
25:41Oh.
25:42It looks so good.
25:44So I enhanced some of it, made the letters a little bit bolder.
25:46Mm-hmm.
25:47I added full color on it.
25:49The edges of the letters are gilded in 23-carat gold leaf.
25:52Oh, wow.
25:53Which is what you're going to be doing on the ribbon.
25:55Oh, cool.
25:56You made a ribbon sign, too.
25:58Oh, I'm excited.
25:59Let's go over here, and I'll explain a little bit about gold leaf to you.
26:02Okay.
26:03I want you to hold this and rub it between your fingers.
26:06Oh, wow.
26:07It's so fragile.
26:08Just get a handful.
26:09Yeah.
26:10It's three millionths of an inch thick.
26:12It just disappears.
26:13Yeah, and then it's gone.
26:14All right.
26:15Now we're ready to start gilding, so why don't you bring your stool over?
26:19All right.
26:20All right.
26:21While Sprout's working on the artistic touches, I'm delivering a load of lumber so we can build
26:26the deck behind Shelby's new workshop.
26:28Hey, Gus.
26:29What's up, boys?
26:30I brought you some lumber.
26:32Hey, good morning.
26:33Sweet.
26:34That's perfect timing.
26:35It's going to be the cutest little deck ever.
26:38First step to making a cute little deck, hauling some seriously heavy beams.
26:42Good thing my crew's got clever ideas and a big piece of machinery that makes us look
26:49strong.
26:50Why don't you go get the tally, and we'll just slide it onto the tally.
26:52We can slide it onto the tally, too.
26:53I like that.
26:54This is a technique that's been used.
26:56The Egyptians used it.
26:57When you see all the artifacts, they're gilded in gold leaf.
27:00Oh, wow.
27:01This is the very same thing that we're doing right now.
27:05We're off and running, building the deck.
27:08When I pull this up, the gold will only stick to where I've got glue paint.
27:11So go ahead and pull a sheet off of there, and do just what I did.
27:21And lift your sheet up.
27:22Terrific.
27:24Very good.
27:25That's fabulous.
27:26Okay.
27:27Here's where Sprouts got me beat.
27:30She can handle both power tools and fine design detail.
27:35So I stick to what I know.
27:37Making the pieces fit together.
27:39Because when it comes to the sparkle, that's all her.
27:43Terrific.
27:44I'm gonna grab you another book, and we'll keep going.
27:46Only 11 more letters to go.
27:48Right there.
27:49So we just picked up our custom door that we had made for Shelby and Derek's project.
28:09Spray foam insulation's done.
28:11Electricians are done.
28:12Siding gets delivered today.
28:13Yeah, here in the next day or so, we'll be ready for paint.
28:17But I don't want Shelby and Derek seeing our progress and spoiling the surprise.
28:22So I managed to convince them to spend a few days kicking back at our property at Shortgrass for a well-deserved getaway.
28:29Hey, chickens.
28:30Here.
28:31I have food.
28:32But Shelby would only leave her animals if Alex stepped in to take care of them.
28:45Building all sheeted up.
28:46Looking good.
28:47Oh, yeah.
28:48First item on the to-do list, install the door.
28:53This beauty comes with side lights.
28:55These skinny little windows on each side of the door, which will add a little extra light into the space.
29:03Oh, nice.
29:05So I like how it looks.
29:06I like it's a little wider.
29:07And then these aren't too overbearing.
29:09Like, they're a nice clean glass.
29:10We didn't want to do any pattern glass.
29:12That is a sharp-looking door.
29:13I can see that sign now.
29:15Lund Valley Farm.
29:16Cool.
29:21Next step is siding.
29:22So we went with a traditional look.
29:25This stuff is tough as nails and should have no problem standing up to our crazy South Dakota weather.
29:31This is actually 70% fly ash.
29:34It's basically a byproduct from the mining industry.
29:37So they take that, they mix it with a polymer glue, press it together, and this woodgrain texture is actually embossed in the wood.
29:44Now it has a different finish on each side, but I don't know which side Sprout wants out.
29:54Hello?
29:55Quick question for you.
29:56The siding came this morning.
29:57Do you want a smooth side or do you want a wood textured side?
30:01I want wood textured side out just because of like the overall aesthetic of the build.
30:07Cool.
30:08Let's do that.
30:09Bye.
30:10Love you.
30:11Love you.
30:13Hello.
30:14Hey, how are you, Sprout?
30:15Good.
30:16Nice to see you again.
30:17Nice to see you again.
30:18I hear you got some boards for us.
30:20Yes.
30:21So I was hoping that we could turn them into some pieces I could use for some shelving.
30:25Oh, cool.
30:26Yeah, they're in good shape.
30:27There are a few with some nails in them.
30:29We'll get those pulled out, no problem.
30:30Okay.
30:31So are you wanting any of them cut or just surfaced?
30:33Just surfaced.
30:34Okay.
30:37Thank you so much.
30:38So Ruby and I were working on siding the front of the apothecary building.
30:59When you install a siding, if you're going to do it yourself, every three or four courses,
31:06throw a level on it and make sure you're not doing this.
31:10Because over the course of a 16-foot-tall building, if you're off a sixteenth of an inch over that far,
31:17literally it starts to do this.
31:19And you get up to the top and your pieces are visibly slanted.
31:22It's not good.
31:24Well, we're looking good on that.
31:27Oh, there's Dustin.
31:28Yeah, I think let's back him right up to the deck.
31:31Dustin's worked his fair share of old floors, and today he brought all his tools to give Shelby's boards a proper facelift.
31:42I'm a one-man job, and I love it.
31:45We're sanding off a century's worth of grain and grime so this building can start a fresh chapter in its old story.
31:52I'm going to leave a little character in it.
32:00I'm not going to sand all the way, but it'll look really nice.
32:04It'll look fairly new.
32:06Oh, bro.
32:07Hey.
32:08Holy crap.
32:09That's just two cuts.
32:10That is bananas.
32:11That is bananas that that is what was underneath it.
32:24Oh, yeah.
32:26That's not even the same room.
32:28This is so cool.
32:30holy crap that's just two cuts that is bananas that that was what was underneath it oh yeah
32:38it's not even the same room this is so cool dude you've been working hard brother take
32:43a break before you finish up yep amazing
32:46oh you got a chip
32:57is that good you like chips huh
33:16i'm getting to the build site a little bit early to take care of shelby's farm animals
33:20they're crazy while shelby and derek have a little bit of relaxation time at short grass
33:25i have a long list of things i have to make sure are done i need to feed the goats hello
33:34oh my no that's not happening right now
33:40oh that got on everyone's head
33:42make sure that they have enough water
33:49make sure the horses are brushed oh hi
33:53it sure is beautiful out here but it smells a bit stronger than i thought it would
34:02i need to feed the chickens
34:06hi oh hi ducks and i need to let the puppies out
34:10feed gus there you go such a diva but that's okay cappy is too
34:26y'all poop a lot i promise it's not food wow i really have a new appreciation for what shelby does
34:33every day it's a lot of hard work what time to finish transforming this granary into a one-of-a-kind
34:42workshop and bring shelby back home where she belongs the inside walls are getting a coat of
34:48whitewash which will give them a classic french sort of farmhouse charm who smells like progress
34:54yeah oh dude that looks so good yeah it brightens it up quite a bit which is great i think she's
35:00gonna love it awesome sweet thanks dude appreciate it the whitewash dries in no time and david jumps
35:07right into the install of the custom shelves sprout designed
35:18so alex wanted to put shelves in here from the salvaged wall we took out she took them cleaned them
35:25up finished them brought them back and she wants me to install them in here
35:28she has great vision shelby said that the temperature is extra important for making her products
35:40so we're also installing a wood burning boiler that'll pump warm water through the radiators in
35:45the apothecary during the snowy winter months real slow okay perfect they already burn wood on the
35:53property they have wood stoves this is just an easy transition to have a high-tech unit that they can
35:59feed once a day that'll keep consistent heat and shelby's workspace and her shop this is going to be a
36:05game changer for them now for the last piece of the puzzle shelby told us that her dad was the
36:16inspiration behind starting this farm and her business so we need to cut here chop this guy off i know how
36:26strong that bond can be since her dad is no longer here i wanted to turn this old exterior siding into
36:35a special surprise for shelby to honor him and to keep his spirit close okay let's go puppy
36:46it's a gorgeous day in our little corner of south dakota and after getting all the final bits and pieces
37:01into place it's time to bring shelby and derek back to the space that we've poured all our love into
37:08i'm so excited it looks so good in here i think you knocked it out of the park on this one
37:12this is very cool thanks awesome i think i hear their truck all right well i'm ready if you're good
37:19to go and get miss shelby and derek i know thanks girl
37:25all right no peeking just keep your eyes down perfect so excited can't hardly take it
37:34okay how are we feeling anxious nervous yeah excited kind of like i'm gonna throw up i'm so excited
37:50well don't do that there's no throwing up all right should we put them out of their misery and
37:54let them turn around and see yes okay in three two one oh my god wow wow that is so beautiful
38:08that is awesome that looks so good guys oh yeah so the building itself had a former life we found
38:16writing inside the building from 1906 on some of the boards inside so it's 120 years old it was a granary
38:23and it was part of a farm on the west side of spearfish so we ended up moving it down the road
38:28and then we set her down on its new home awesome it's so heartwarming that the history of spearfish
38:34is still going to continue on on our property where did you get the sign i worked with a sign maker in
38:42town and we worked with the original design on the soaps and all of your products so it still has that same
38:49look yeah it's perfect this sign that's on the building is bigger and so eye-catching compared to
38:58the sign that i have it's definitely a scale up yeah pops a little more yeah all right would you
39:05you like to head inside yes we would go for it after you it's all you oh my gosh here we go
39:13oh my god oh my god it's beautiful wow
39:22oh my god everything looks so perfect
39:26chills oh my goodness it just it all looks so good wow
39:35it's so perfect guys i mean
39:42oh go ahead awesome
39:46glad you like it yeah oh this is so pretty
39:52when i walked in one of the first things i noticed was a picture of my dad and i
39:56i don't want to cry i don't want to cry but yeah it was beautiful
40:03that's a great picture i actually made that frame from the original siding on the building
40:09it's just a little surprise for you both i really wanted the inside to feel like an elegant antique and
40:15so in order to do that we left most of the original walls so these are the real like interior
40:21walls that we just whitewashed and then in terms of separation it's not like a rope that says don't
40:30come past you this is for employees only but it's a visual separation from the storefront to the
40:37workshop yeah it's just so perfect we had the floors refinished we put in an air conditioner and
40:44we also installed an exterior wood boiler so you have hydronic heat in here to keep everything nice
40:50and warm in the winter time that's amazing yeah there's a lot of steps involved to take it from the
40:55the original granary and turn it into this goat apothecary the goat the goat apothecary perfect yeah it is
41:04amazing well to say thank you and for something special uh sprout i made you your own goat soap so
41:13yes sprouts goat soap and that's going to be your original one for lumb valley farm oh i love it
41:19thank you so much that's so cool thank you and then for you cappy
41:24yeah isn't that beautiful it has it has your face on it so oh my gosh
41:33cappy's noggin nectar that's going to do wonders and you can also use your beard oil it's a win-win
41:41all around i love it yeah we'll let you guys get back to it thank you for this very much thank you guys
41:46appreciate it thank you so much thank you sprout you guys are so amazing thanks guys when people come
41:56onto the property and come to the shop i just want them to have the whole experience of the farm and the
42:03fact alex and cappy did capture that they stepped up and it's amazing in this building every board every
42:12shelf it all has a story and it's part of our history here and so we just get to add on to that
42:20chapter and continue and make new memories and it's going to be wonderful
42:31i'll hand over a soap and you have to figure out what the scent is
42:34cinnamon oatmeal it's just vanilla but okay this is like a favorite one of mine slushies no after
42:46the rain good lord all right man musk that's it don't call it tobacco and bay leaf that's pretty close
