00:00NATO has announced the launch of a new military effort dubbed Arctic Century, aimed at improving
00:06security in the high north.
00:08It comes just weeks after U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to forcefully take Greenland,
00:13the semi-autonomous territory of the Danish Kingdom, prompting a crisis for the alliance.
00:19Most of us in Europe and in the U.S. agree in Canada that there is a lot of value
00:23in
00:23sticking together.
00:25Because NATO is there not only to protect Europe and Canada, but also the United States.
00:30I mean, for the U.S. to stay safe going forward, they need a secure Arctic, a secure Europe
00:35and a secure Atlantic.
00:36And for Europe to stay safe, of course, we need, of course, this close cooperation, transatlantic.
00:43A senior NATO military officer pushed back on suggestions that the Arctic Century is merely
00:48a rebranding exercise to appease Trump.
00:52Initially, Arctic Century will be the NATO label for national military exercises in the
00:57region and does not involve the permanent or even long-term deployment of troops to the
01:01region under a NATO banner.
01:05European allies hope that the initiative, as well as ongoing talks between the Trump administration,
01:09Denmark and Greenland, will allow NATO to move on from the disputes surrounding Greenland.
